HE has lived all over the world, but Stanley resident Ed Tyrie is never more at home than when deep in meditation. “Meditation is deeply relaxing, a way of achieving calmness that nourishes the body and mind,” he said, soaking up the sun at his rural home. “It is a very good way of dealing with the stress that is part of modern life.” Born in Wales and raised in Scotland, Ed joined the Scottish police as a cadet at age 16. His parents emigrated to Australia when he was 18, but he stayed behind and continued his career with the police until one night, standing knee deep in snow in freezing Scottish weather while on patrol, he decided he would head for Australia’s warmer climate. The 21 year old arrived in 1964, met and married Margaret and landed a job with the Australian Federal Police (AFP), where he spent several decades rising through the ranks. In 2000 he was appointed executive director of the protective security coordination centre, a demanding role which became even more complicated following the terror attacks of September 11, 2001. Ed eventually retired from government service in 2007. He and Margaret moved from Canberra to pursue their treechange at Stanley after having fallen in love with the place, and the rural setting has become the perfect location for him to continue to share his passion for meditation with others. continued page |

Part time vegetarian
Transplanting trees and shrubs
DO you eat meat every day? Have you ever thought about reducing the amount of meat you eat? You don’t have to call yourself a vegetarian to discover the wonderful flavors and health benefits of reducing your meat intake and trying dishes created from pulses, legumes, vegetables and tofu. Being vegetarian part time and taking up the challenge of meat free Mondays can be a lot of fun and beneficial to your health. The key to a healthy vegetarian diet is variety – and lots of it. There is no point becoming a vegetarian if you are fussy with lots of foods as well, such as lentils, pulses, whole grains, tofu, nuts, seeds and green leafy vegetables. Hard core meat eaters often crave salt, fat and flavor, so as long as your vegetarian dish contains healthy oils, a combo of plant proteins and is not bland you should be able to reduce your meat intake with no cost to flavor or health. Use healthy oils to make up the fat content of the

meal (fills you up), and add sea salt, fresh stocks, seaweeds and lots of herbs and spices. These promote the salty flavor that meat eaters are often craving, as well as adding essential minerals and digestive properties into the meal. Being a part time vegetarian allows you to explore a wider variety of foods, as well as having huge economic,
environmental, and health benefits. If you do decide to become a vegetarian it is vital to supplement - you can’t remove the meat from a plate without replacing it with some other iron rich and protein dense foods. When you eat meat as a condiment or replace it with well chosen vegetarian protein, food can be delicious, filling and extremely healthy.
A GORGEOUS Fuchsia has been happily growing along the side of the house for many years. Unfortunately due to building renovations, it has to be moved. It is quite large reaching a height and width of around 2 metres. The best time to transplant most shrubs and trees is from late autumn through to early spring, depending on weather conditions. As the Fuchsia needs to be removed, I am taking advantage of the recent rain and moist soil conditions, which makes digging easier. Firstly, choose the new site taking into consideration the plant’s likes and needs. Fuchsias prefer shade or dappled light and this was planted on the eastern side of the house, which offered protection from the summer heat and strong winds. The planned relocation site has similar conditions. It is always better to prepare the new planting hole before digging up the plant. But to get an idea of the size and shape of the root system do a bit of exploratory digging first. The new hole should be about twice as wide and deep as the root system with plenty of organic matter added. Before digging up the plant, prune it back by one third. This makes the plant more manageable
WITH DEBBI GIBSON, HORTICULTURALIST
and enables the transplanted plant to focus on regrowing the root system and not foliage. After pruning, give the roots a deep water, then dig deep and wide around the drip line of the plant. When enough soil has been removed from the sides, slip the shovel under the root ball and sever the deeper roots. To help relocate the plant to the new planting hole slide it onto a tarp or shade cloth. This also helps to keep soil around the roots. Place the plant into the new hole, making sure it is at the same soil level as the original planting and water in well to push out any air pockets. Then water with Seasol to reduce transplant shock and to stimulate new root growth. Top with manure and mulch and keep well watered until established. Happy gardening.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma in cats HIGH PRESSURE CAREER: Ed Tyrie is pictured in 1992 while coordinator of Operation Lilac - about the disappearance of yacht Patenala and its crew – during his long career with the Australian Federal Police. PHOTO: Courtesy of Australian Federal Police Museum Collection
Ed said he first realised the role meditation could play in safeguarding his health and wellbeing back in the 1970s, and had many benefits, including extending his working life and giving him the energy to continue to live a full, vital life even as he heads into his 70s. As well as setting up his own meditation business, Ed has spent recent years as a crisis supporter for Lifeline, as well as being heavily involved in the Stanley community with the Stanley Rural Community Incorporated (SRCI). He said his involvement with Lifeline in particular gave him a window into the severity of stress and mental health issues among the population, particularly in men. “It’s probably highly underestimated, the reliance on crisis call centres including Lifeline,” he said. “They provide an incredible service to those in need. “The stress in people’s lives has increased markedly in the past 20-30 years. “You’ve got to find a way of balancing, energising, withdrawing from it and rebalancing.” Ed said his life experience has helped give him insight into stress management and general wellbeing, particularly
when it comes to men’s health. He said men going through a personal crisis should learn to reach out to their support networks to get through difficult times. “Courage, strength and toughness are all masculine attributes that can help get you out of trouble when there is a need,” Ed said. “Use them wisely and get help for yourself. “A friend reminded me the other day that we (men) sometimes spend more energy on working out reasons for not getting help, and that if we put the same energy into accepting we can overcome problems with some help and support, that life would be much more easy.” His time with the SRCI has seen him involved with tackling a number of community issues, including re-establishing the local post office and a range of other infrastructure related issues. He said he has always felt a desire to use his skills to help others. “My whole career, even now, is about serving the community,” Ed said. “It’s nice to feel a part of the community.” More information about meditation is available at calmingthechaos.com.au.
SQUAMOUS Cell Carcinoma (SCC) is a common skin cancer that we see in cats. It predominantly affects the nose and tips of the ears and is particularly a problem for white cats and cats with pink noses. SCC tends to arise in animals that spend time outdoors as sun exposure is part of the process of this cancer starting. Lesions can, however, develop on any part of the body. The good news about SCC is that if detected early treatment can be very effective and relatively simple. On the converse, if left too long the cancer can spread to other areas of the body or invade locally and end up being fatal to the cat. SCC lesions begin as scabby irregular black looking areas on the skin often only a few millimetres wide. The surrounding skin may be a little pinker than usual and there may be hair loss. Untreated the lesion will become ulcerated and may ooze and bleed. Diagnosis is often based on their characteristic appearance and location, but skin biopsies may also be used to gain a definitive diagnosis.
Early intervention is crucial to successful treatment. In many cases cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen freezing can effectively remove the cancerous tissue. In other cases, especially on the tips of the ears, surgical removal may be necessary. As time progresses and the lesion gets larger and deeper, it may be very difficult or impossible to cure the animal and treatment will be aimed at slowing the tumor’s growth and improving the cat’s quality of life. If your cat has developed any small scabby black or brown lesions, especially around their face it is a good idea to have them checked out by your veterinarian sooner rather than later. One foot in the grave NOW don’t get too excited everyone, but today we are going to be discussing feet. Yes, feet. I know. You can hardly bear the excitement. All those fabulous plantar fascias, cuboid and metatarsil bones. Those lovely navicular bones and phalanges (or ‘toes’ to most of us). But please contain yourself. This is a very serious discussion. You see, I wish I could have a chat with my former self. The 30 year old jamming her wide feet into narrow shoes. The 20-something year old wearing the ridiculous high heels and squishy pointy toes. That 13 year old wearing the Dunlop Volleys on the tennis court. The 10 year old running around all summer long in rubber thongs. Oh yes, I would give every incarnation of that girl a good old talking to. She’s committed every podiatric sin known to humankind and in doing so has shown complete disregard for her 50 something year old self. But now she’s paying the price. She’s hobbling around with a plantar fascia that’s tighter than a showgirl’s bustier, a heel spur that would do Buffalo Bill proud and toenails that no self respecting emu would want to be associated with. And it’s all due to a lack of concern and regard for her poor little footsies. Yes, it hasn’t helped that she was dealt a nasty blow in the first place, when fate handed her a rather oversized pair of feet in proportion to the rest of her rather small frame. Clearly there were a few spare size 9s kicking around at the time – or maybe she was just standing in the wrong line when they were handing out the feet (this is probably the more likely scenario as she’s never been known for paying attention). Thus, by the time she noticed there was a problem, it was way too late. So she did what any other self respecting (or should that be, self conscious?) girl would do: she tried to disguise them by shoving them into shoes that were often too small for her. For a long time she got away with this.
BY CATHERINE WARNOCK Her poor feet would just squish up until eventually they burst the sides of the shoes. Not surprisingly she was considered to be ‘quite hard on shoes’ as she went through them like a dose of salts. As she grew older she began to wear high heels, because when you are an executive assistant you are expected to look the part. One time she bought a rather expensive pair of high heeled, patent leather, square toed pumps. She thought, because of the square toe, that these shoes might accommodate her broad foot. She thought wrong. A bunion started forming on the side of her foot and every step was excruciating. After two wears (yes, she went back for seconds because the Scrooge in her couldn’t bear to think she’d wasted all that money) she was forced to abandon the lovely patent shoes and actually gave them away for fear of being tempted to try again. Later still, after a lovely trip to the UK in which she had footed her way around the streets of London (calculating some 30 kilometres in just one day) she, not surprisingly, returned home with a rather sore heel. Thinking it was just a bruise, she tried every heel pad in the known universe but all to no avail. When it got so serious that she was reluctant to walk across the road to the café for lunch, she knew it was time to do something about it (I’m sure you noted that it took the threat of interfering with her food intake that spurred her into action). Well anyway, after eventually seeing a podiatrist and discovering she needed orthotics, the problem soon disappeared. But she got cocky, didn’t she, Little Missy? She gradually stopped wearing her orthotics and guess what? The size 9s have mutinied with a vengeance. And so, here she is once again hobbling around like a lame chook and wishing her younger self had given a toss about the future. Although, knowing her, I’ll bet she would’ve said “too bad” and bought the patent pumps anyway. Lil’ rebel!

Wood Park Wines
Homemade sausage rolls
2012 Wild’s Gully Tempranillo Around $16.00
WITH ANITA McPHERSON dark color and purple tinged hue, and the exotic perfume of ripe and almost smoky wild blackberries. The flavor was as rich and pleasing as first impressions promised, with lots of dark, ripe black berry and cherry fruit, a light sweetness, touch of spice and toasty dry finish. With a medium body, it pairs well with all kinds of savory dishes, but especially those involving salami or salty cheeses. It’s also a great value wine you’d be happy to add to your collection of food friendly drops, and if your friends have any say in it, it just might be a contender for people’s choice. THIS DAY IN HISTORY
A Ghost From the Past, 1894 A leading player from the Kelly drama of a decade earlier appeared in a Melbourne court. Alexander Fitzpatrick, the former police constable who had set off the Kelly outbreak in 1878, appeared to face a charge of obtaining money by false pretences, by presenting a dud cheque to the licensee of the Scaracen’s Head Hotel in Bourke Street, Melbourne. He was committed for trial and subsequently sentenced to 12 months’ gaol.
THERE is nothing like homemade sausage rolls, once you have made them you won’t want to go back to buying them. My grandson the other day at the supermarket asked me what the frozen ones were, when I said they were sausage rolls he said, “No they’re not.” He is so used to my ones, the frozen ones are completely foreign to him. Thank goodness… I don’t mind the children eating these for dinner as they have meat from the local butcher, fresh grated carrot with a small amount of tomato sauce in them. When I make them I make enough to freeze for later when I’m time poor. Method Fry your diced onion in some butter and oil until it is soft and translucent, put aside to cool. In a big bowl combine mincemeat, bread crumbs, grated carrot, tomato sauce and cooled onions, add pepper to taste, do not add salt as the tomato sauce is salty enough. Mix all together. Place your thawed pastry on a flat bench in-front of you, place mince mixture along the pastry leaving a small edge of exposed pastry, roll over until the edge of the pastry is completely under the sausage roll, cut the pastry with an overhang then roll over until the edge is covered. Continue until all the mix is used. You can freeze at this stage. Place the sausage rolls on a

THE Benalla Nude Art Prize wraps up this month, and what a welcome addition it has been to the regional event calendar. It is always great to see an imaginative and thought provoking collection of artworks, and it never ceases to amaze me how differently artists can approach the same subject matter. It’s also interesting to hear the feedback from the public who visit the gallery, whose own gut responses to the exhibits can be as diverse as the exhibits themselves. These shows are great for encouraging us to think, respond and challenge each other in a way that can really get the conversational ball rolling. Food and wine can do the same thing sometimes and Wood Park’s Wild’s Gully Tempranillo was the topic of conversation when attention turned to red wines to enjoy with food. New changes to be aware of this tax time THERE are a few changes this tax time that you need to be aware of. Private Health Insurance rebates will be adjusted and applied to premiums paid on or after April 1, 2014. This means the rebate before and after this date will be different, and you will now have two lines of information you will need to include in your tax return. So make sure you wait for your statement before doing your tax return. Pre-filling of private health insurance policy details is expected to be available in myTax and e-tax from early August 2014. The net medical expenses tax offset is being phased out. To be eligible to claim the tax offset this year you must have either received the offset in your 2012-13 income tax assessment, or paid for medical expenses relating to disability aids, attendant care or aged care.
Tax receipt This tax time people who have lodged their tax return and paid $100 or more in income tax will now receive a tax receipt with their Notice of Assessment. The tax receipt provides a breakdown of how your tax has contributed to government services such as welfare, health and education. Information on the level of Australian government debt will also be included. For more information visit www.ato.gov.au/taxreceipt. Paper tax returns Like last year, if a taxpayer needs to lodge on paper they can order a paper tax return and instructions online at www.ato.gov.au/ onlineorderingExternal Link, calling 1300 720 092 (quote NAT 71050), or by picking up a copy from ATO shopfronts as they will no longer be available at newsagents.
IN my reading over the past week I was most interested in an article in which talked about whether you were leadership material or not. So the question I ask you is, what is leadership anyway? In my opinion it doesn’t have anything to do with seniority or one’s position in the hierarchy of the company or organisation, because leadership doesn’t automatically happen when you reach a certain pay grade. Hopefully you find it there but there are no guarantees. Also, leadership has nothing to do with titles. Leadership isn’t management - good management is needed to plan, measure, monitor, solve, hire and fire and so many other things - but leaders lead people. The sixth President of the United States, John Quincy Adams, once famously said “if your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader”. So what has this to do with the business world? Good leadership is essential to business success as good leaders will inspire others and facilitate the fusion of the various skills, personalities, and core strengths to achieve the goals and long-term vision of the business. So what are good leadership practices? A recent study by the University of New South Wales Australian School of Business on “Leadership, Culture and Management practices of High Performing Workplaces in Australia” has identified several leadership practices that result in increased business performance. These included: ensuring employee alignment with organisational goals and values; higher levels of employee participation in decision making processes and teamwork; investment in higher levels of behavioral and skills flexibility in employees; and, excellence in attracting and retaining high level people. Interesting that the Australian Business School study found those high performing workplaces which adopted some fundamental leadership practices had profit margins three times higher than those that didn’t.
By KEN CLARKE, WANGARATTA CERTIFIED PRACTICING ACCOUNTANT
kclarke@alphalink.com.au Furthermore, those high performing workplaces were also better at achieving their stated financial targets by 34 per cent while productivity was up by 12 per cent. As it can be seen, people management and leadership skills are a vital part of any business leader’s role if it is to be successful. So don’t be afraid to bite the bullet and seek help if you need it. A study by the Chartered Institute of Accountants found that up to 85 per cent of employees surveyed would stay longer with their current employer if they were able to access flexible working arrangements. KEY COMPONENTS OF BUSINESS LEADERSHIP: Employee Alignment with Organisational Goals and Values: A good leader will ensure their employees understand and embrace the business values, as this will yield many benefits to the business. Values help employees remain engaged with the businesses core purposes as well as setting a common standard in the workplace. Higher levels of behavioral and skills flexibility: Leaders should invest in their employees’ skills and career development through practices such as on the job learning, mentoring and coaching programs, workplace induction and investment in continuous training and education. An employee’s productivity will improve with additional training where they acquire new skills and efficiencies. Attracting and retaining high-quality people: Good leaders will no doubt be aware of the benefit of attracting and retaining good employees as it logically sees reduced training costs and increased productivity due to the higher level skills and adaptability. When considering content of work, it is important to ensure your employees are challenged in the workplace and that they are rotated through roles or provided a reasonable diversity of roles to reduce the risk of stagnation.
