Happy wife, happy hens, happy life
◆ HAPPY FAMILY: Cassie, Ryan (holding newborn Hugh) and Elly Sutcliffe have embraced farm life in Jindera.
By BELINDA HARRISON FARMING often gets a negative reputation and many teenagers leave their family’s farm to pursue other work having seen the stress their parents and/or grandparents have endured year after year. From droughts to bushfires to seasons that were too hot or too cold, failed crops, animals being mistreated or falling ill,
there are so many reasons for people to leave the land. But for Cassie and Ryan Sutcliffe of The Happy Hens Eggs at Jindera, they couldn’t be happier with their choice of life on the land. “I wanted to show people the good side to agriculture and spread a bit of positivity, which is why our business is called The Happy Hens Eggs,” Cassie explained. She grew up in Howlong, her family having a beef and
dairy farming background and for as long as she can remember, was always following her Dad around on his cattle work jobs locally and when visiting family in the Laceby, Moyhu, Docker and Wangaratta areas where they had property. “I’ve always been an animal lover and after I finished school, I started a vet nursing traineeship before completing a Diploma in Vet Nursing,” Cassie said. “I also worked at the

Corowa Piggery just for something completely different, and as an embryo technician for a cattle vet.” Similarly, Ryan grew up around the Corowa district where his grandparents had a sheep and cropping property and had connections in the grain storage industry. “My uncle gave me my first job on a grain storage site and now I manage a grain storage company and employ him,” Ryan said.
Ryan and Cassie moved to Manangatang in the Mallee district when Ryan landed a traineeship with Graincorp but they always knew they wanted to run their own farm and raise their children in a rural surrounding. “I really wanted to run beef cattle so in 2015, we returned to the North East and bought our 20 acre farm,” Cassie explained. “Ryan took on a management role in grain storage
operations at Rand and I settled into teaching veterinary nursing and animal studies at GOTAFE. “We bought and sold some cattle and ran a small group of cows and calves but it wasn’t until our daughter Eloise (Elly) was born in 2017 and I was on maternity leave that I felt like I was ‘living the dream’ - pottering around outside on the farm and feeding cattle and I was starting to dread returning to my office job.”

It’s Magpie season AUSTRALIAN Magpies, Cracticus tibicen, are widespread and live in areas where there are trees and adjacent open areas. For most of the year, Magpies are friendly and sociable, and may even venture into your house to beg for food. But for four to six weeks a year during August to September, the male Magpie will defend his home vigorously. Male Magpies swoop people because they’re protecting their chicks, and also because the person walking or riding by reminds the bird of someone who disturbed them in the past. Magpies build their nests in the outer branches of a tree, up to 15 metres above the ground, and construct them from sticks and twigs (occasionally wire), with a small interior bowl lined with grass and hair. There are a lot of simple things you can do to avoid being swooped by a protective Magpie defending his chicks, such as: t 8BML RVJDLMZ BOE DBSFGVMMZ BXBZ from the area and avoid walking there when Magpies are nesting or make a temporary sign to warn other people. t 5SZ UP LFFQ BO FZF PO UIF .BHpie, at the same time walking carefully

Commercial poppy crops in Victoria THE Victorian Government has a strict regulatory framework for the commercial alkaloid poppy industry in Victoria. Alkaloid poppies are grown to extract the valuable opiates they contain (such as morphine, codeine and thebaine) for use in producing painrelieving (therapeutic) medicines. Following trials in 2013, a number of commercial crops for therapeutic purposes were planted at locations around Victoria since mid-2014. The development of a poppy industry in Victoria provides economic beneďŹ ts to the state and helps meet a growing world demand for pain-relieving medicines. It is illegal to take, use, sell or grow poppies without a licence from the Victorian Government. Illegal possession of poppy plant parts or substances derived from poppies is a criminal offence and attracts heavy penalties. Poppies cannot be grown in Victoria without a cultivation licence (issued by Agriculture Victoria) and
a valid contract with a licensed processing company. Producers interested in growing poppies in Victoria should ďŹ rst contact a licenced processor such as Sun Pharmaceuticals or TPI Enterprises to express their interest. Poppy crops are planted between autumn and spring and harvested between December and February. After owering, the poppy capsules develop and dry out. The dry capsules and a small amount of stem are harvested for processing. The leftover straw will be ploughed in within seven days of harvest. A person cannot enter a poppy crop unless they are accompanied at all times by the licence holder, an employee of the licence holder, or an authorised Agriculture Victoria inspector. Signs will be placed at gates and around the boundaries of a crop, with the warning that entry is prohibited and illegal use of the crop may cause death.
The opiates found in alkaloid poppies are potentially dangerous if misused and can be extremely toxic EVF UP UIF RVBOUJUJFT PG UIFCBJOF that they may contain. Alkaloid poppies might look identical to other poppy varieties and cultivars but they are chemically very different and can be highly toxic to humans. Thebaine in its raw form is a toxic opiate alkaloid and only laboratory UFTUJOH DBO DPOmSN UIF RVBOUJUJFT present. Any ingestion of poppy plants should be treated as an emergency - call 000 immediately for an ambulance.

Dal Zotto Wines 2019 Sangiovese
IT has been such a relief to finally see the first signs of spring. Spending more time at home is something we’ve all had to get used to this year, but having to spend it indoors all the time can make it feel even more confining. It’s encouraging to see dormant trees in the garden begin to come to life, to see the buds burst open and to hear the sound of bees buzzing and birds singing. But it’s strange that a 20 degree day at the end of winter and makes you want to get out and about in short sleeves, while the same temperature in summer would make you put a jumper on. Longer days and more time outside means barbecues; and a wine which spans the seasons is a locally produced Sangiovese. Dal Zotto Sangiovese is an ideal wine for just about anything you want to grill. It has a good balance between the fruity and the savoury; the light, purple red wine quite vibrant and fresh with red cherry and perhaps even strawberry aromas. The flavour is quite earthy and it has an interesting feel bringing dried herbs like oregano or thyme into the dry and

savoury red fruit mix. While lighter in colour it’s certainly not light on in flavour, giving you plenty to think about. It goes so well with snags, steak, roo or kebabs, especially those spiked with beef, mushrooms, capsicum and onion. Time to get out the barbecue tongs and spring into action again.
Available from local outlets or visit www.dalzotto.com.au. About $23.
This Day in History, 1860 IT was on this day, a Saturday, that the Rutherglen gold rush is thought to have begun. Originally it was known as the Wahgunyah Rush, as Wahgunyah was the closest settlement to the discovery, and the prospecting party which found the gold was being provisioned from Wahgunyah. The jubilant miners allowed the Wahgunyah butcher who had been providing them with meat on account, the honour of washing the first prospect, and there was no doubt about the richness of the strike.

Keeping healthy in a mask MANY people have been talking to us about how they feel when wearing masks. Symptoms such as feeling dizzy, tired, dry in the mouth and hot are common. Interestingly these symptoms can be synonymous with anxiety, dehydration and mouth breathing - all which can be amplified wearing a mask if we don’t look after ourselves. Mask wearing is really important right now and hopefully, with a few weeks of practise, you are now finding them easier to wear. We thought we would share some tips about three common health com-
plaints that seem to get worse when wearing a mask. Headaches: Daily headaches can occur from mask elastic being too tight and causing a compression ache. Dehydration can also amplify headaches. If you are susceptible to headaches, try to limit consecutive hours. If you typically drink coffee, tea or coke throughout your day, you might inadvertently be drinking less because you have a mask on, which can lead to painful withdrawal headaches. Read our hydration article next week. Skin breakouts: Wearing a mask daily can lead to an increase in oil,
bacteria and sebum build up in your pores, or the mask itself may rub against very sensitive skin types. Cloth masks need to be washed daily and you may need to change your cloth mask every four hours if you are very sensitive. Use a barrier cream under the mask if you are prone to rubbing or irritation from the cloth. Fatigue/dizzy: poor breathing - through the mouth - can lead to dizzy spells and anxiety. Headaches, tiredness and shortness of breath are common if you wear a mask for long periods and continue to mouth breath. See our article on breathing coming up.

Happy wife, happy hens, happy life Ŷ
From page 1
Cassie knew she couldn’t make a living trading cattle off 20 acres but when she was introduced to a woman who was running free range hens, things fell into place. “I was hooked immediately and started madly researching because I didn’t really know much about chooks, eggs or anything,” she said. “I finally convinced Ryan that we should order a small chicken caravan and 30 hens and just see how we go.” Starting their new venture with Plymouth Rock and Aracuana breeds, Cassie and Ryan sold directly to friends and family but, right away, they didn’t have enough eggs to meet the demand. “We chose Plymouth Rocks because I thought they looked
nice and the Aracuanas laid blue eggs, which made for pretty photos and looked great against our pink egg cartons, branding and logo,” Cassie said. “Unfortunately they just didn’t lay enough eggs and they constantly went broody. “We now run between 600 and 800 Isa Brown hens and they can lay around 300 eggs per year. “They rarely go broody and they’re also very friendly and easy to handle. “I was sad to see the Aracuanas and Plymouth Rocks go - the Aracuanas were quite flighty and full of attitude while the calmer Plymouths were my favourite and pretty to look at.” The cattle have also gone, replaced with three purpose-built caravans (roosts) which can hold between
250 and 300 birds each. The caravans are essentially closed in trailers with two large doors on either side where the hens can jump in and out of when they’re open and there are roosting bars on the inside of the doors where they can roost at night. In addition to the hens, two Border Collies and a sheep who share the farm with Cassie, Ryan and Elly, the family welcomed a second child recently - a son named Hugh. Big sister Elly (now three and a half) is affectionately known as the ‘CEO’ of Happy Hens) was desperate to get Hugh out to the paddocks and show him around. “She’s a typical three year old - bossy and determined to keep everyone in line and on task,” Cassie laughed.
“She’s a handy egg collector and from a young age learnt that broken eggs are a bad thing. “She’ll dob her dad in if he breaks any eggs when they’re collecting them together. “Having been around the hens since she was born she’s confident handling them and has no fear - she’ll often pick them up and cart them around the paddock.” It really is a family affair at the farm and Cassie loves to give an insight into the goings-on via their social media pages. “I try and give people a bit of a laugh, often at my own expense,” she said. “Last year I put up a photo of myself face down in the paddock in my Collingwood jumper after Collingwood lost the preliminary final. “That generated a lot of talk

ISO RECIPE
TECH & SCIENCE
with Alison Keenan
Lemon yoghurt cake with strawberry icing THIS is part of a regular series featuring recipes that have become popular during the COVID-19 lockdown. This recipe comes from Alison Keenan. Alison shares her recipe for lemon yoghurt cake with strawberry icing that she enjoys making with her son. DURING isolation we have been doing a lot of baking especially on rainy days. My four year old son Thomas and I love making this cake together as it is so easy and delicious. The strawberries in the icing can also easily be switched for raspberries or blueberries. Lemon yoghurt cake with strawberry icing Serves 8 Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups plain flour 2 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp salt 1 cup plain or Greek yoghurt 1 cup caster sugar 3 eggs
Finely grated zest of 3 lemons 1/2 cup vegetable oil Icing: 1 1/2 cups icing mixture 5 pureed fresh strawberries (or mashed with a fork) Method: Pre heat the oven to 170C and grease and line a rectangle loaf tin with baking paper. Sift the flour and baking powder into a bowl, stir in the salt and sugar. Make a well in the centre and add the yoghurt, eggs, lemon zest and oil. Whisk the mixture until smooth and pour it into the loaf tin. Bake for 45-50 minutes until a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. Cool the cake in the tin for 15 minutes before turning it on to a wire rack to cool completely. Icing: Puree or mash the strawberries until smooth, add the icing mixture to the strawberries and begin to whisk adding 1 tsp of water at a time until a thick icing is achieved. Spread on the cake and allow to set for an hour before slicing.

World’s fastest supercomputers THE race to possess the most powerful supercomputer never really ends. This friendly competition between countries has propelled a boom in processing power, and it doesn’t look like it’ll be slowing down anytime soon. With scientists using supercomputers for important projects such as curing debilitating diseases, we can only hope it will continue for years to come. To celebrate this amazing technology, this week I thought we’d take a look at the fastest computers as defined by computer ranking project TOP500 - and at what these machines are used for. 4. Sunway TaihuLight - China Also a former number one, Sunway TaihuLight dominated the list for two years after its debut in June 2016. At that time, its 93.01 petaFLOPS and 10,649,000 cores made it the world’s most powerful supercomputer by a wide margin, boasting more than five times the processing power of its nearest competitor (ORNL’s Titan) and nearly 19 times more cores. But given the non-stop pace of technological advancement, no position is ever secure for long. TaihuLight ceded the top spot to competitors in June 2018.
3. Sierra - US Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s (LLNL) Sierra initially debuted at #3 on the June 2018 list with 71.6 petaFLOPS. Optimisation later pushed the processing speed on its 1,572,480 cores to 94.6 petaFLOPS, earning it the #2 spot in November 2018. However, the ascension of a new number one in June 2020 pushes Sierra back to third position. 2. Summit - US As part of the US Department of Energy’s renewed commitment to supercomputing power, Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s (ORNL) Summit first claimed the #1 spot in June 2018, taking the top rank from China for the first time in six years. Since its debut on the June 2018 list, Summit improved its initial High Performance Linpack (HPL) performance from 122.3 to the current 148.6 petaFLOPS. Unusually for such a high-performing machine, Summit also initially ranked third on the GreenTop500, which measures energy efficiency in supercomputers, though it has since dropped to ninth place. Summit is now playing a critical role in the global race to discover treatments and vaccines against COVID-19.

1. Fugaku - Japan Jointly developed by RIKEN and Fujitsu, Japan’s Fugaku is the new number one fastest supercomputer in the world. Japan has not had a system take the top spot since June 2011 when Fugaku’s predecessor, the K computer, debuted in first place. Boasting nearly 7.3 million cores and a speed of 415.5 petaFLOPS, Fugaku far outperforms previous #1 Summit’s 148.6 PetaFLOPS, bringing HPC technology one step closer to the promised exascale era. Installed at RIKEN Center for Computational Science (R-CCS) in Kobe, Japan, Fugaku is intended for applications that will address highpriority social and scientific issues. These include drug discovery, personalized medicine, weather and climate forecasting, clean energy development, and exploring the fundamental laws of the universe. (Although, I’m not sure why - we all know the answer is 42 anyway). It is already being used in an experimental basis for COVID-19 research. Fugaku will begin full operation in April 2021.
