Relay full of rewards By BELINDA HARRISON
FOR Wangaratta’s Lauren Kneebone, the annual Relay For Life event is more than remembering friends and family who have been lost to cancer or celebrating with those who have fought off the cruel disease. It’s a chance to make a real difference to those who are living with cancer, and those whom it will touch in years to come, by raising much-needed funds for research. Lauren’s team - The Merry Marchers - started nine years ago after Lauren’s mother said she’d like to participate. “Our group is made up of members from a number of different backgrounds, so I wanted to choose a fun, friendly name that everyone could feel comfortable with,” she said. Enjoying the stories, sadness, laughter and friendship that the Relay For Life event provides is not the only reason Lauren works so hard each year to raise as much money as she can for cancer research. When Lauren was pregnant, her husband Richard was diagnosed with a rosette forming glioneuronal brain tumour - a rare, invasive tumour which at the time had only been discovered in 31 other patients worldwide.

King parrot disease DURING the winter months many of you may have noticed some king parrots not doing too well. At the vet clinic we often get brought in these beautiful birds by the well-meaning public who find them weak and unable to fly. These birds are infected by a spironucleas protozoa. This disease most commonly causes disease in wild Australian king parrots (Alisterus scapularis), in NSW, ACT and Victoria. The disease causes emaciation, diarrhoea, weakness and depression. Often birds present in a very poor state with fluid filled loops of bowel and diarrhoea matting around their vent. Death usually occurs within four days of presentation. The prevalence of this disease in the wild population is currently unknown. Mortality rates of this disease are very high, with a report of 85 per cent of the birds succumbing to the disease who were presented to the Healesville Sanctuary. Survival is poor despite intensive treatment, and often the best option for these birds is humane euthanasia. The transmission of the protozoa is via the faecal-oral route. The incubation period is approximately seven days.
with Ovens and Kiewa Veterinary Hospital Affected birds are usually young, as the adults act as subclinical carries, meaning they have the protozoa in their gut, but this does not cause disease. The disease usually occurs during winter, possibly because of the decreased availability of food. This generally means these birds are not as well equipped to fight off the protozoa. It can also be because they will often feed closer together and in larger groups, thus allowing the disease to spread. This is one of the many reasons bird feeders are strongly discouraged, as they act as the perfect site for transmission of disease. If you feel you must have a bird feeder, the food needs to be changed daily and cleaned with a 10 per cent bleach solution. If you see a sick king parrot and you can catch it, it usually means it is very unwell and during the winter months will likely have this spironucleas disease. These birds need to be taken to your local vet for euthanasia. If they are kept with other birds, they can pass on this terrible disease.

◆ INDIGENOUS AUSTRALIAN: Indigofera australis - Warby Range Form.
PHOTO: Helen Van Riet
Indigofera australis flowering now INDIGOFERA australis is a delightful medium garden shrub. Plants bear masses of purple pea-flowers on slender arching stems. It has a long-flowering period from winter through to late spring, has attractive grey-green foliage and responds well to regular pruning. Austral Indigo is Indigenous to all Australian states. This no-fuss, hardy shrub has been under-rated and is a most desirable garden specimen. In the bush, often growing on rocky slopes and in harsh conditions, Austral Indigo is often scraggly. Kangaroos enjoy the foliage and tend to smash it down to reach the tastiest new shoots. Grazing stock also enjoy tucking into the foliage, stems and flowers.

Indigenous people used to crush the foliage and stems in salt or fresh water to stun fish. Because it occurs naturally over such a wide area, forms in their natural habitat vary widely in shape, foliage and flower colour, ranging from pink to purple. In our garden we grow two forms, both bearing purple flowers. The Beechworth form is dense and has tangly, bright green foliage. It is a useful screening and habitat shrub. The other form is Indigenous to the Warby Range [pictured above] and is more upright and has greyish/green leaves. All forms of I. australis are frost and drought hardy and they thrive in part-shade or full sun. As with many Australian plants,
pruning regularly may increase longevity. After flowering, the arching stems can be pruned back to about 80cm from ground level (prunings can be utilised for a yellow/fawn natural fabric dye). Old plants can be rejuvenated by hard pruning - they will also regenerate from the roots. Plants grow well in sand, loam or clay acidic soils. I. australis improves soil fertility by fixing nitrogen through specialised root nodules. The flowers are followed by plentiful, glossy, bright green peashaped seed pods. New plants are easily propagated from seed. Pre-treat by scarifying or soaking mature seeds in very hot water before sowing. Plants can also be propagated from cuttings.

This Day In History, 1896 NEVER had Albury’s old timers seen a hailstorm like it. It swept along the Murray River at daybreak on this day in 1896 with a tremendous roar, sending down hail stones bigger than anyone had seen in the colony before. As the sun rose, the landscape presented an amazing spectacle. Orchards, vineyards and gardens stripped bare of vegetation. Every roof groaned under tons of hail. Outside the town, the hills were white.

Winter is over and spring has definitely sprung IDEALLY our food should now transition from warm (temperature and spices) slow cooked meats and pulses to soft green salads mixed through proteins with bright coloured fruits and vegetables. Why do we do this? This is a natural and simple way to begin a cleanse or detox, to shed some of those extra kgs we “foundâ€? during winter and prepare our body for a new year. Why should I detox? It will give you clear, ďŹ rm healthy skin, balance hormones, provide a happy digestive tract, give more energy, aid preparation for conception of your next child, kick start a weight loss program, and help limit headaches, aches and pains.

It’s based on whole-foods that supply all of the essential nutrients for wellbeing. 2. Any supplements are prescribed by a qualiďŹ ed health practitioner who knows your current state of health. 3. The focus is on supporting the processes that already take place. 4. It works on all detoxiďŹ cation organs - including the gut, the lymph and obviously the liver. Do you want to support your natural detoxiďŹ cation pathways? Then let a university-trained naturopath help you today.
And when done correctly, a detox program can help you to achieve these goals. What many people don’t realise is that our modern, convenient world is toxic. From plastic eating/drinking containers, pesticide laden foods, increased indoors/screen time, stress and pharmaceuticals (including those prescribed incorrectly or over the counter). Then there are the naturally occurring toxins that accumulate in our body when all systems aren’t working well (constipation, poor gut function, skin issues etc). When you add all these up there is a huge pressure on our body to be con-

WITH the ground ďŹ nally beginning to warm up after a couple of false starts, the garden has ďŹ nally started to not only recover, but to take off. What’s great about this time of year is the chance to replace, redesign and replant - to pull out what’s on its last legs and plant something fresh and new - and there is nothing like attending an open garden to get some inspiration. With two very different gardens open in Wangaratta on Sunday, October 13 as a fundraiser for Friends of Lacluta, I plan to ďŹ nd out what works and steal great ideas from people in the know. I’m all about attracting birds, so it’s ďŹ tting to enjoy a glass of Flying Duck Pinot Grigio outside. It has bright, fruity and oral aroma which is perfectly suited to spring drinking - with hints of pear and apple fruit. There is more pear in the avour, balanced with the zing of citrus on the way to a crisp, dry ďŹ nish. The wine is an ideal choice to enjoy with chicken skewers which have been brushed with

Relay for Life full of rewards From page 1
Although the tumour was benign, Richard had to undergo lifesaving surgery, followed by a long period of recovery. Without the research, trials and medical breakthroughs which had gone before, Lauren knows that Richard may not have ever met their son, Paxton, now 13. “Even though the tumour was non-cancerous, we know how lucky we are that Richard was able to get the treatment and surgery that he did and if it wasn’t for people raising funds and awareness in years gone by, then we may not have been so fortunate,â€? she said. “It’s wonderful to think that what we’ve contributed over our time with Relay For Life, could make that same difference to other families in the future.â€? In August this year, that contribution reached $100,000, which Lauren and her team are very proud of. “When we started this journey, we never imagined that we could achieve something so great,â€? she said. “We didn’t even have a goal for that ďŹ rst
year, but at the closing ceremony of the event, we were informed that teams who managed to raise $5000 would have the honour of a research award being named for their team or loved one. “We were sitting at $4600 so we got busy and managed to raise the extra funds in time for the banking cut-off date. “Since then we have named a total of 16 research awards for research into breast cancer and low survival rate cancers. The Merry Marchers have come up with a number of innovative ways to fundraise and draw attention to the Relay For Life event. People may remember ‘The Great Toilet Dump’ theme from 2015 in particular. The concept was simple - they dumped a toilet on your lawn and you would pay to have it removed. For $10 a team member would take it away, for $20 you could have it taken to a friend’s house or you could pay $30 for ‘toilet insurance’ which ensured it was never returned to you. The fundraiser ran for 171 days, travelled

1337.8km, made 152 dumps and raised a total of $4300, contributing to one of the three research awards the Merry Marchers funded that year. It also attracted national media attention and raised awareness for both Relay For Life and bowel and prostate cancer. Asked why Lauren continues to be involved with Relay For Life, she said, “Relay can provide a sense of purpose for friends and family members who often feel quite helpless watching their loved one suffer. “It’s important to support everyone involved and if we can have some fun doing it, then all the better. “Teams are encouraged to dress up and decorate their tents for the Relay event, and even though some teams choose to have a different theme every year, our theme is always pirates. It’s not too late to say ‘ahoy matey’ and get involved with The Merry Marchers in this year’s Relay For Life event, which takes place at Wangaratta’s Merriwa Park on Saturday, October 19, from 12pm to 10pm.

GONE FISHING
TECH & SCIENCE
with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au â—† NICE NATIVE: Terry Alexander with a nice Lake Nillahcootie yellowbelly caught on a live yabby last Thursday.
Fishing is slowly starting to warm up JUST like that we have our air conditioners running and our sprinklers on. It was a very short transition from winter to spring. The sudden warm weather has really started to ďŹ re the ďŹ sh up around the region this week. The stream trout ďŹ shing seems to be ticking over nice and steady. This week I have no outstanding reports, but I have a report of a few trout caught in the Howqua River and a couple in the Mitta Mitta River. On the weekend I ďŹ shed at Stanley Dam in the Stanley township with my family where we found heaps of hungry trout rising and jumping. I suspect the warm weather may have seen an increase in insect activity which has stirred the trout up. We were only at Stanley Dam for a little while as we were passing through but managed to catch four nice little rainbow trout. The yellowbelly ďŹ shing continues to improve. Cliff Karnatz caught his personal best yellowbelly at Lake Hume during the week, landing a magniďŹ cent 65cm model on a
with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA McGrath wide body diving lure. Cliff has caught a couple of others this week as well. My father and I ďŹ shed Lake Nillahcootie last Thursday and we managed to catch two yellowbelly (both legal size), one Murray cod (unhooked and released at the boat) and three carp. We caught ďŹ ve of those six ďŹ sh in the ďŹ rst half an hour of ďŹ shing and the last ďŹ sh just as we were leaving four hours later. So the ďŹ shing wasn’t red hot, but we caught a few and had some great fun. One yellowbelly was caught on a live yabby, the cod was caught on a small lipless crankbait lure and everything else was caught using worms for bait. As the weather continues to warm and stabilise, the yellowbelly ďŹ shing should continue to improve.
IT’S been said that artists are among the least likely to lose their jobs to machine learning and artiďŹ cial intelligence. Having worked in the creative ďŹ eld for about 10 years now, with the last couple of years focused speciďŹ cally on the intersection between technological advancements, digital platform offerings, and creative roles here at North East Media, I’d estimate that such an assertion will remain true for a long time yet. It’s no simple feat to teach a computer how to contextually create even the simplest of graphical objects, as in a real world setting there are often many variables to consider and account for - variables that a human being is able to take in their stride. When we’re talking about an actual work of art - a drawing, a painting, or a sculpture - the sheer volume of complexities inherent to such an undertaking becomes a dizzying array of variables. Firstly, there’s the ‘how’ of it. I know just enough about javascript that I might be able to, at least theoretically, instruct a program like Adobe Indesign to recreate, pixel by pixel, an approximation of the famous painting ‘The Starry Night’ by Vincent Van Gogh (assuming I was using a reference image). The script would be miles long, I would quite literally go as mad as Van Gogh in the process, and the ludicrously time consuming process would only, at best, create a carbon copy of the painting (to an untrained, half-blind eye). All that to say that creating a program that is merely capable of creating artwork is something that few people are capable of (without going insane, that is). Then there is the question of ‘what’ to paint.
◆ A(I)RT: Google Deepmind’s rendition of ‘The Starry Night’ by Vincent Van Gogh.
In October last year, the ďŹ rst painting created by an artiďŹ cial intelligence - “A Portrait of Edmond Belamyâ€? - was sold in New York for U.S. $432,500. The sale price was astronomically higher than anticipated (it was predicted that painting would sell for between $7000 - $10,000). Creators from the group ‘Obvious Art’ cooperated on the process to make the print by putting a collection of 15,000 portraits into a machine learning program. The portraits were painted by artists between the 14th and 20th centuries. Then a tool called the ‘Generator’ made a new image based on the information entered into the system. After that, another tool, called a ‘Discriminator,’ attempted to ďŹ nd differences between the human-made images and one created by the Generator. “The aim is to fool the Discriminator into thinking that the new images are real-life portraits,â€? ‘Obvious Art’ member Hugo Caselles-Dupre said in a statement. When the Discriminator had been fooled, the generated image was considered to be a result. And while those results are impres-
sive, and should give abstract impressionist painters some pause, the images produced are, at the heart of it, just a coalesced facsimile of the 15,000 portraits fed into the machine. In other words, the machine learning program needed a lot of help to create its works of art. And lastly, there’s the big question why? If we have made some strides toward teaching computers what to paint and how to paint it competently, we haven’t even begun the work of teaching them ‘why’ they should paint something in particular. And realistically, when it comes to art, that is the most important question of all. In order to achieve such a thing, we’d need to extend beyond the realm of artiďŹ cial intelligence, and into the realm of artiďŹ cial general intelligence (AGI). AGI is the concept of a machine that has the capacity to learn, and more importantly, truly understand, any intellectual task that a human being is capable of. It’s safe to say we’re a long way away from that reality, and artists can sleep easy - so long as they aren’t abstract artists, that is.
