◆ PAPER TRAIL INSPIRED: Kirrily Anderson (pictured) said she has lived a creative life, drawing inspiration for her artwork from new outdoor environments.

By MITCHELL GASTIN

KIRRILY Anderson’s creative passion grew from the moment she began drawing in primary school and from there, she followed her artistic path. The 39-year-old moved to Chiltern just two years ago after a creative tenure in Melbourne where she splashed her art across the heart of the city before taking it to the North East. “When I left high school I moved to Melbourne and studied graphic arts, where after that I worked as a freelance graphic designer,” Kirrily said. “I was always drawing in school; I was really passionate and was right into it so I was encouraged to take the graphic design path as it was a more stable job… I enjoyed doing that, but I needed more creativity. “I think with the internet, social media and networking

around the mid-2000s, it became easier to branch out into artwork, so from there I was able to get my artwork up online and was doing music posters for bands.” Once Kirrily branched off from her freelance graphic design work and took on artwork, she found a passion for working alongside young people in a creative environment. “Working with schools and younger people has been a large part of my work in recent years,” she said. “I like working with younger people who are interested in art but don’t necessarily have access to the education on how to become an artist… because I missed out on that when I was in school, I like to pass that on to other people in a similar situation.

Consumers confusing different types of financial advice ASIC has released new research revealing many consumers confuse ‘general’ and ‘personal’ advice exposing them to greater risk of poor ďŹ nancial decisions. The ASIC report, Financial advice: Mind the gap (REP 614), presents new independent research on consumer awareness and understanding of general and personal ďŹ nancial advice, identifying substantial gaps in consumer comprehension. “This disturbing gap in understanding whether the advice they are getting is personal or not means many consumers are under the false premise their interests are being prioritised, when no such protection exists,â€? said ASIC Deputy Chair, Karen Chester. Millions of Australians will likely seek ďŹ nancial advice at some stage in their lives. When they do, it is critical they understand whether that advice is personal, whether it is tailored to their circumstances and does the adviser have a legal obligation to act in their interest. “The survey not only revealed consumers are not familiar with the concepts of general and personal advice, but only 53 per cent of those surveyed correctly identiďŹ ed ‘general’ advice. "And even when provided the general advice warning, nearly 40 per cent of those surveyed wrongly believed the adviser had an obligation to take their personal circumstances into account,â€? Ms Chester said. The report highlights the im-

portance of consumer awareness and understanding of the distinction between personal and general advice with the Future of Financial Advice (FOFA) protections only applying when personal advice is provided. These include obligations for advisers to act in their client’s best interests, to provide advice that is appropriate to their client’s personal circumstances and to prioritise their client’s interests. These obligations do not apply when general advice is provided. “The survey also revealed that the responsibilities of ďŹ nancial advisers, when providing general advice, is not well understood. "Nearly 40 per cent of those surveyed were unaware that advisers were not required by law to act in their clients’ best interests,â€? Ms Chester said. ASIC anticipates the need for ďŹ nancial advice to grow, reecting an ageing population and many ďŹ nancial products, especially retirement products, becoming more complex. ASIC reports that much of the advice is likely to be general advice, and while appropriate in some circumstances, it is inevitably of limited use. Ms Chester said, “This consumer research is timely. "It comes as the Government is considering policy recommendations on ďŹ nancial advice from the Productivity Commission’s twin reports on Australia’s ďŹ nancial and superannuation systems." The report can be found at asic.gov.au.

with Mandi McDonald GARDENING SPECIALIST ◆ DRINK IT IN: By choosing the right plants and owers, you can make your garden into a stimulating sensory experience.

Gardening for the senses

I BELIEVE gardening is very therapeutic for the person undertaking it. There are many ways to enjoy a garden and each of us will have a different sensory experience. Gardening and plants allow us to use one or more of our ďŹ ve senses: sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch. Sight: Although this seems obvious, the way a garden is seen will be different for everybody. Some people enjoy lots of colour, others like white owers only, others just enjoy the look of foliage plants. My garden contains owers all year round. I have planted to achieve this so every time I walk around the garden there is something in ower to put a smile on my face. Hearing: Life can get hectic, and sometimes we may not stop long enough to enjoy the sounds in our

WANGARATTA REGIONAL STUDY CENTRE

garden. Hearing wind in the trees, birds singing, bees buzzing or even water owing really gives your heart a lift. Taste: Growing and picking your own fruit, vegetables and herbs not only gives you a sense of achievement but they taste amazing too! What else can I say? Try it, you won’t be disappointed. You don’t have to undertake it on a big scale. A few pots of herbs on a deck may be all you can ďŹ t, but will still provide you with the same results. Smell: Scents can evoke many emotions in us. Perfume from a certain ower can take you on a trip down memory lane. The smell of freshly picked sun ripened tomatoes on a warm day there is nothing like it. The aroma of crushed mint leaves is so refreshing. Lavender can give you a sense of calm

when you brush the plant. Touch: Plants can have soft, smooth, leathery, rough, spongy, furry and even prickly foliage. All of these can give us a different feeling. I’m sure many of us have likened the aptly named plant, lambs ears (Stachys byzantina) to rubbing the ears of an actual baby animal. Even the bark of trees can produce a tactile response. The beautiful smooth trunk of a crepe myrtle or the rough bark of a tree can be appealing for different reasons. Take the time to wander around your garden and appreciate how much it offers. Allow it to give your mental health a boost. It’s right in your own backyard and it’s free. Happy gardening.

Diabetes in dogs

VET CORNER THIS week’s pet of the week at Wangaratta RSPCA is Squeak, a three year old, male domestic shorthair cat who is champagne and white in colour. To see more animals up for adoption at the Wangaratta RSPCA, visit the shelter in Connell Street or phone (03) 5722 2874.

with Freya Williams VETERINARIAN dedication, as it requires twice daily injections of insulin for life, as well as regular visits to the vet for monitoring. The main goal of treatment is to maintain blood glucose within normal levels and to prevent too much fluctuation in their daily levels. To do this, regular monitoring of blood glucose levels is required. This is done by performing a blood glucose curve where their blood glucose levels are monitored over the day at your vet clinic. This allows your veterinarian to make decisions about whether to alter their dose of insulin. Diabetic patients are unfortunately predisposed to other conditions such as cataracts, urinary tract infections, gastrointestinal upset and kidney disease. That is why it is important they are well controlled with insulin therapy and have regular health checks with their veterinarian.

Paint the streets: Kirrily Anderson

“It was just ever since I was really small, in primary school my teachers and family always encouraged me in doing something creative. “I started creating art when I wasn’t really well, I liked to create a lot of repetitive patterns in my artwork and it was a meditation for me, almost like art therapy.” “I started creating artwork that I could put out on the street, so I started with a lot of small artworks… it was more about the process of it for me at this stage. “I really enjoyed going out at night when the city was dead and quiet to just create street art around my neighbourhood near the warehouse studio I had in Collingwood at the time.” As her experience grew, Kirrily stretched her creative boundaries, collaborating with fellow artists based next to her Collingwood warehouse studio to create an immersive, postapocalyptic house. “The largest paste-up I did was 27 metres long and about 2.5 metres tall across a sports pavilion at Reservoir in Melbourne,” she said.

Studio in Chiltern was a stroke of luck, giving her the ability to showcase her paste-up murals, original and print artworks. “It happened pretty organically actually, we wanted to buy a house and happened to find a property with a shopfront and thought it’d be great to have a studio open to the public and showcase my work,” she said. “Every school holidays I run drawing based workshops for young people and am now looking to do things for adults as well. “I like to spend time with each participant and get them to think outside the box, whether that’s drawing with different colours or making them do a different exercise to get them uncomfortable… doing things differently and in a way they don’t expect always creates a bit of fun. “There’s so much more opportunity these days with online resources, I’m so fortunate to have had a creative career as a graphic designer, which eventually overlapped and influenced my style of artwork and catapulted me on to this path.”

“It was an artwork that represented the community, we photographed members of the sports club that use the area and I illustrated a young girl reaching out her hand to the other depicted members”. Since moving to Chiltern, Kirrily said the community engagement has been far greater than anywhere else she has lived before. “I feel I can connect with the community a lot more here, I feel I’m making artwork that is connected to a certain place much more than I ever did in Melbourne, whether it be relating to the natural environment of the area or the people and that has influenced my artwork a lot,” she said. “I’ve learnt a lot about flora and fauna of the area and it is popping up in my artwork more and more. “For inspiration, I usually like to get out somewhere, it usually involves nature, whenever I hit a block I know it’s time to get out and find a new place and experience new things for a little bit.” Kirrily said opening her Paper Trail

DIABETES is a chronic disease that occurs in dogs, cats and people characterised by high blood sugar (hyperglycemia). It is a result of the inability of the pancreas to produce enough insulin for the body’s requirements. Insulin is a hormone which is needed to transport glucose (blood sugar) through the blood to energy producing cells. When a lack of insulin occurs, glucose cannot move into the cells and the glucose level in the blood rises to abnormally high levels. Clinical signs assosciated with diabetes include; increase in frequency of drinking and urination, rapid weight loss, lethargy, weakness, abdominal pain and cataract formation. Predisposing factors of diabetes include; obesity, genetic predisposition, poor diet, hormonal abnormalities, stress and certain medications. Unfortunately, there is no cure for diabetes, however the disease can be well managed with regular insulin therapy. It is important to understand that treatment involves time and

LAST WEEK’S SOLUTION

THERE is still some good fishing around North East Victoria if you’re willing to try different techniques and different places. I fished Broken Creek at Katamatite on Sunday afternoon where I caught two carp and lost another fish, presumably another carp. There are also yellowbelly and Murray cod in the Broken Creek, however carp make up the bulk of the fish caught. The Ovens River has slowed down a lot in recent weeks. Bait fishermen seem to be getting the best results. Mick Cooksey of Mansfield caught a few Murray cod in the Ovens River at Wangaratta last week on bait, the biggest being a whopping 100cm. My friend Tim Galley has been catching a few Murray cod on cheese in the Ovens at Wangaratta as well as a few carp. Tim also picked up a nice redfin at Lake Moodemere last week, using live shrimp as bait with a bit of Strike Tiger “yabby oil” lure scent on it. I myself have fished the Eldorado Dredge hole a few times recently, but it has been very slow. I have only managed a few small redfin using worms for bait, but did lose one nice fish early one morning. The Eldorado Dredge at sunrise is a simply beautiful place to be regardless of the fishing.

with Naturopaths Belinda McPherson and Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) â—† HEALTH AND HAIR: Hair loss can be a symptom of any number of issues.

Having a bad hair day

TO most people, their hair’s appearance can deďŹ ne their mood and conďŹ dence, and throughout history, there are reports of the health of your hair being directly linked to your social status, fertility and wealth. Hair loss often can exacerbate or cause feelings of anxiety and emotional distress and cause self-esteem issues. When a client presents with hair loss it is important to discover if this is normal hair loss or something else. A simple at home test: collect roughly 50 strands of hair and gently pull downwards between your thumb and pointer from your scalp to the ends. Losing 2-5 strands of hair with this test is considered normal. If you lose six or more, you should seek help from

a naturopath who has an interest in hair loss. Signs that you may need to seek help include: hair falling out in handfuls/ clumps, bald patches, sudden onset of loss, redness or inammation of the scalp, hair breaking on the shaft. Hair loss can be caused by any disruption to the hair growth cycle, from below the scalp all the way down the hair shaft. Things that can exacerbate loss may include: nutritional deďŹ ciencies (especially iron and zinc), thyroid dysfunction, hormone imbalance (PCOS, irregular periods etc), stress, bleaching, overuse of heat (straighteners/ hot dryers etc), medications, trauma or shock, and periods of time where you draw on

your nutritional stores eg crash diets, pregnancy, rapid growth, chronic illness, breastfeeding (especially after six months) and menopause. '00% TALK

WINE TALK Michelini Wines 2018 Sauvignon Blanc DURING a recent visit to a maker’s market in the city, it was fascinating to watch artists at work and to see the wide variety of styles and mediums they were passionate about. There was one making spectacular, large waterscapes of crashing waves which were heavily laden with oils, another who was making stunning silver asymmetric earrings by hand, and another meticulously drawing original works in ink which were being carefully coloured. Each artist looked as different as their work, yet here they were in one space, united by a passion for creating unique originals which reflected their own interests and styles. It made me think how important it is to support local business operators who are doing things their own way, which means we get a wonderful range to choose from. A recent bottle of Michelini

with Anita McPherson Wines Sauvignon Blanc illustrated that this is a version which reflects the fruit harvested and the influence of the winemaker. The green-tinged white wine is clean, crisp and fresh, with the aroma of fig, melon and a little spice. The flavour has some melon but also leans toward gooseberry and lime; young and zesty with a crisply, dry finish. It’s a wine which couples well with anything rich or creamy, its crunchy acidity leaving the palate clean after indulging in soft cheeses, creamy pasta or buttery potato. And that combination certainly gets my support. Taste the range at the cellar door in Myrtleford or go to www. micheliniwines.com.au

This Day in History, 1894 AN accident in Wangaratta brought to an end one young man’s dreams of making his fortune in the golden west. It was the time of gold discoveries at Coolgardie, and a young man named William Handley had boarded the train at Wodonga to join a partner already in Melbourne, before taking a boat to Western Australia. At Wangaratta Railway Station, the young man got down from the train and fell into an ash pit, but as he climbed out of the pit, he was hit and killed by the Beechworth train.

TECH & SCIENCE

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ HOME, SWEET HOME: A concept image of a 3D-printed, air-tight biodome used for crop production, and cylinder housing for intrepid pioneers.

Mars: fast facts about our interplanetary prospect THIS week, I thought we’d take a look at a planet that has captured my imagination since I was a child - Mars. The concept that we might one day develop a colony of people on the planet’s surface and become a truly interplanetary species always fills me with excitement, and I love reading literature, and watching films about the subject. There’s so many interesting things about the ‘Red Planet’, but here’s a selection I’ve gathered - I trust some of them might be unknown to a few readers out there. Mars and Earth have approximately the same landmass. Even though Mars has only 15% per cent of the Earth’s volume and just over 10% per cent of the Earth’s mass, around two thirds of the Earth’s surface is

covered in water. Martian surface gravity is only 37% per cent of the Earth’s (meaning you could leap nearly three times higher on Mars). Mars is home to the tallest mountain in the solar system. Olympus Mons, a shield volcano, is 21km high and 600km in diameter. Despite having formed over billions of years, evidence from volcanic lava flows is so recent many scientists believe it could still be active. Only 26 missions to Mars have been successful. As of this year there have been 56 missions to Mars, including orbiters, landers and rovers but not counting flybys. The most recent mission the Schiaparelli EDM lander - was launched in March of this year and although the craft crashed on the surface,

recording of the first five minutes of engineering data was retrieved. Mars has the largest dust storms in the solar system. They can last for months and cover the entire planet. The seasons are extreme because its elliptical (ovalshaped) orbital path around the Sun is more elongated than most other planets in the solar system. On Mars the Sun appears about half the size as it does on Earth. At the closest point to the Sun, the Martian southern hemisphere leans towards the Sun, causing a short, intensely hot summer, while the northern hemisphere endures a brief, cold winter. At its farthest point from the Sun, the Martian northern hemisphere leans towards the Sun,

causing a long, mild summer, while the southern hemisphere endures a lengthy, cold winter. Pieces of Mars have fallen to Earth. Scientists have found tiny traces of Martian atmosphere within meteorites violently ejected from Mars, then orbiting the solar system amongst galactic debris for millions of years, before crash landing on Earth. This allowed scientists to begin studying Mars prior to launching space missions. Mars takes its name from the Roman god of war. The ancient Greeks called the planet Ares, after their god of war; the Romans then did likewise, associating the planet’s blood-red colour with Mars, their own god of war. Interestingly, other ancient cultures also focused on col-

our – to China’s astronomers it was ‘the fire star’, whilst Egyptian priests called on ‘Her Desher’, or ‘the red one’. The red colour Mars is known for is due to the rock and dust covering its surface being rich in iron. There are signs of liquid water on Mars. For years Mars has been known to have water in the form of ice. The first signs of trickling water are dark stripes or stains on crater wall and cliffs seen in satellite images. Due to Mars’ atmosphere this water would have to be salty to prevent it from freezing or vaporising. One day Mars will have a ring. In the next 20-40 million years Mars’ largest moon Phobos will be torn apart by gravi-

tational forces leading to the creation of a ring that could last up to 100 million years. NASA wants to send humans to Mars in the 2030’s. NASA is developing the capabilities needed to send humans to an asteroid by 2025, and Mars in the 2030’s. The first potential colonists on Mars might 3D print their tools and homes from Martian dust. A new technique could allow the first humans on Mars to 3D print everything from tools to temporary housing out of a tough rubber-like material — using only Martian dust. The method could enable the first humans who set foot on the Red Planet to print the tools and housing they need to survive without having to lug all the supplies aboard their spaceship.

Up the Creek with the Rose family CHANNEL CHAT

THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS:

Show: Schitt’s Creek Channel: ABC Comedy Timeslot: Monday, 9.17pm

Santa Clarita Diet (Netflix, streaming) This dark comedy, starring Drew Barrymore as an undead suburban woman with a taste for human flesh, continues to tickle the funnybone in its third season. Miracle Workers (Stan, streaming) Set in a version of heaven called Heaven Inc, whose various departments oversee and control what happens on Earth, this is a quirky comedy starring Steve Buscemi as an unkempt, unhinged and unpredictable God.

with Kylie Wilson FISH out of water scenarios have always been ripe fodder for television comedy, from Mork and Mindy to The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and even Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, just to name a few. And Schitt’s Creek is a prime example of this genre. The show centres around the formerly filthy rich Rose family, who lose everything after being swindled by their busi-

ness manager, and are forced to rebuild their lives in a small town named Schitt’s Creek, which family patriarch Johnny (Eugene Levy) once bought as a joke. Their new reality sees them living in two adjoining rooms in the town’s run-down hotel while they figure out their next move. From dealing with the wellmeaning but often manipulative mayor (Chris Elliott), to figuring

out their next career moves, and pursuing relationships with the local residents, the eccentric Rose family make a splash in their new hometown. The cast is full of accomplished comedic names, including Eugene’s son Dan

(the pair also created the show together) as the cynical and finicky David Rose, the incomparable Catherine O’Hara stealing scenes as Eugene’s pretentious yet loving wife Moira, Annie Murphy as spoiled daughter Alexis, and

Emily Hampshire as the hotel’s prickly owner, Stevie. While the family resist their new home at first, the comedy comes in seeing them slowly warm to the country lifestyle, becoming closer with those around them, and using unusual methods to help address their problems. Now in season four, the

comedy remains, but the relationships and attachments they have formed make for compelling, and sometimes even emotional, television, making this one of the most satisfying and well rounded television comedies of recent years. Past seasons of the show are also available on Netflix.
