By KYLIE WILSON WITH a steadily ageing population, fostering conversations on what that means for society, the planet, and our communities has become more essential than ever. Discussing and putting the many issues relating to ageing front and centre is the aim of an upcoming community event centred on Yackandandah, which has been instigated and organised by the CEO of Yackandandah Health, Annette Nuck. The weekend event, being held in November, will feature a presentation on Ageing Well: Innovations From Around The World by international Federation on Ageing in Canada secretary general Dr Jane Barratt (followed by a panel discussion); a Community Celebration featuring Australian identities Jackie French and Costa Georgiadis; and a Yackandandah Theatre Company performance based on the stories of Yackandandah Health aged care residents, Living Memory.

Senior momentum ◆ PROMOTING DISCUSSION: Yackandandah Health CEO Annette Nuck (second from right), pictured with residents of Yackandandah Health (from left) Judith Brindley, Phyllis Heiner, Pepita Hodgetts, Julie Scott and Hazel Fox, is looking forward to fostering community discussion on ageing at an upcoming event she has organised.

Do your homework when working from home T E C H N O L O G Y- d r i v e n changes to the employment market are seeing record numbers of Australians claiming deductions for expenses incurred while working from home. But a high level of mistakes, errors and questionable claims have prompted the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) to increase attention, scrutiny and education for home office expenses this tax time. Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said that last year, 6.7 million taxpayers claimed a record $7.9 billion in deductions for ‘other work-related expenses’ which includes expenses related to working from home. “There is a rising trend of employees working from home, and while extra costs related to working from home are usually deductible, we are seeing some taxpayers either over-claiming or claiming private costs, she said. “There is mounting evidence that many taxpayers don’t know what they can and cannot claim. “In particular, we are seeing some taxpayers claiming expenses they never paid for, expenses their employer reimbursed, private expenses and expenses with no supporting records, Ms Anderson said. Taxpayers can legitimately claim additional costs incurred as a direct result of working from home, but need to be careful not to claim private expenses as well. “Claims for the work-related

portion of expenses like phone, internet, depreciation of your computer, printing and stationary are all allowed,â€? she said. “But one of the biggest issues we are seeing is people claiming the entire amount of expenses like their internet or mobile phone, not just the extra bit related to work. “In reality, the rest of us are subsidising their private phone calls and internet usage, which is not okay.â€? According to Ms Anderson, the additional costs of running expenses like electricity for heating, cooling and lighting are deductible, but you need to be able to demonstrate that there were additional costs. While employees can claim additional running costs associated with working from home, occupancy costs are limited. “Employees cannot generally claim occupancy-related expenses like rent, mortgage repayments, property insurance, land taxes and rates,â€? Ms Anderson said. She warned that employers are sometimes contacted to verify expenses. According to Ms Anderson, record-keeping is a key focus area for the ATO this year. Spring garden chores

WELL, spring has well and truly arrived with warm days and plenty of owers. The cool nights are keeping us on our toes with a few frosts still occurring, so keep an eye out and protect your vegetable seedlings. Unfortunately, we are not getting much rain, so it is very important to water your plants now. It is surprisingly dry when you start digging around in the garden. Deep watering now will better prepare your plants for summer. Check watering systems and make sure they are all in working order.

Encourage bees into the garden by planting lots of owers. One of the plants that bees absolutely love is lavender. I have also noticed in my garden if I let some of my herbs go to ower the bees like these as well. Bees do an amazing job in our gardens so the least we can do is plant some owers for them. Also as the weather gets hot don’t forget bees need water. Bees don’t swim very well so make sure they can access the water easily. Day light saving means more time to spend outside in the garden - enjoy!

I think they will be needed quite a bit this season. Mulch well to help keep the ground moist and help suppress weeds. Fruit y will start to become active as the days and nights warm up. Make sure you have your lures and traps up early and as soon as you have fruit set on your trees cover them with fruit y netting. There is a lot of information available and advice to help you manage fruit y in your garden so come and have a chat. Don’t give up on growing your own produce.

FEATURE STORY

Septic shock SEPTIC shock is a disease syndrome that occurs in animals with severe infections. It is a body wide inflammatory cascade that is triggered by the release of bacterial toxins from a site of infection or by spreading of bacteria themselves into the blood stream (septicaemia). This disease state is very serious and can develop from multiple types of infection in the body. Examples of this include pyometra (pus infection of the uterus), severe dental disease and infections post dog bites. The syndrome is characterised initially by fever, rapid heart rate, lethargy and brisk red gums. As time progresses the heart rate can slow and blood pressure drops. The gums become pale and the animal’s ability to get up and move around diminishes. The further the syndrome progresses the harder it is to correct and the poorer the prog-

with Tim Craig VETERINARIAN nosis for recovery becomes. Treatment of septic shock is aimed at first rapidly identifying that the syndrome is developing. Then efforts to remove or kill off the bacterial must be made. This may be with aggressive antibiotic therapy or surgical drainage or excision. Concurrently shock (the state of lowering blood pressure) should be attended to with IV fluid therapy and other medications as required. Early identification and treatment is best in this disease syndrome. Any dog or cat that appears to have an infection and is getting worse in their appetite or energy levels should be assessed to see if the infection’s effects are starting to spread to other parts of the body.

Annette said she is passionate about the event and said has been following the work of Dr Barratt for some time. She was inspired to get in touch with Dr Barratt when she recently visited Australia and made an appearance on panel discussion show The Drum. “She has such an overview on how the global community is tackling the ageing population,” Annette said. “It’s really great to learn about things on a world stage. “We want to open the conversation we hope will continue. “You can’t look at one issue without looking at the big issues.” Annette said that in the wake of the announcement of a Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, she believed aged care models need to be examined and revised by their communities. She said the key to improving quality in aged care is funding, as well as

finding the appropriate balance with staffing levels and proper staff income, but said that it was a complicated issue, with no one-size-fits-all approach. “I think the Royal Commission will be a good thing,” Annette said. She added that the industry needs to shift away from a purely healthbased approach, as there are many facets to providing aged care. “For too long, the aged care focus has been on illness,” she said. “Older people are older than the rest of us, not necessarily sick. “Being old is a stage of life. “Dr Barratt’s work is heavily focused on a wellness model, where we support older people to enjoy their life and do the things they want to do. “The older people have contributed to this country, and need the absolute best care that we can give them.” Annette said she was also looking forward to hearing from author Jackie French during the event.

“She shares so many of the values that we talk about in Yack, especially sustainability,” she said. Just as it takes the proverbial village to raise a child, Annette said that rural towns like Yackandandah can play an integral role in ensuring elderly people remain a vital part of the community. “Our focus is on continuing to connect to the community and valuing these wonderful people,” she said. “Ageing has to be individual.” The events are supported by sponsorship from WAW Credit Union, YCD Co, Joss Group and Indigo Shire Council. Trout still slow, yellowbelly picking up WHILE the poor trout ďŹ shing reports continue to roll in from so many anglers across the region, one man, Anthony Cox, continues to enjoy one of the best seasons he can remember. Fishing mostly in the Ovens River only a stones throw from Bright, Anthony has been catching plenty of trout. Attached to this report is a photo of two nice rainbows he caught last week. I also had a report in from two ďŹ shermen who ďŹ shed the Ovens River at Bright and Harrietville on Saturday. One was ďŹ shing scrub worms weighted with splitshot and the other y ďŹ shing with a dry y with a bead headed nymph two feet below and each caught one trout – both only around 20cms – which were released. I ďŹ shed several tributaries of the

Ovens and King rivers last week for trout and found very few ďŹ sh. Thankfully I have found a couple of streams with half reasonable populations of ďŹ sh, but they are few and far between. I remember this happening in 2012 - when the season closed in June the trout ďŹ shing was great as it had been throughout the 2011-2012 season but then when the season reopened it was terrible ďŹ shing and stayed that way all season. Slowly the trout ďŹ shing built back up. Terry Alexander went to Lake Nillahcootie last Wednesday with his neighbour and managed to catch a few yellowbelly. The ďŹ shing was not red hot and they only managed four ďŹ sh, but this

There has been a few redďŹ n starting to pop up around the area over the last week too. I caught my ďŹ rst redďŹ n yesterday since autumn - it was only small, around 15-20cm. I caught it in the Broken Creek at a roadside rest area on a Strike Tiger nymph soft plastic. The ďŹ sh was caught just upstream of Katamatite where the water is clearer before it runs into Boosey Creek and becomes dirty. I was only there for 10 minutes so I think that area may warrant further exploring.

WINE TALK Warrabilla Wines 2015 Parola’s Limited Release Shiraz EVERY amateur gardener has found out the hard way that buying a plant you admired at the nursery, bringing it home and sticking it the ground is not enough to make it grow. It’s necessary to curb your enthusiasm, be realistic about the site and the climate and choose wisely to ensure the specimen is going to thrive once its roots hit the ground. It’s why demanding vignerons take their site selection so seriously in the ďŹ rst place, knowing that soil will go a long way to producing the ďŹ nest fruit for winemaking. I don’t know much about pedology, or biology, or any other science for that matter, but I like to think thriving vines go a long way to making tasty wines. So I’m guessing the grapes used to make Warrabilla Wines Parola’s Limited Release Shiraz are deďŹ nitely happy campers.

Warrabilla only produces the Parola label in exceptional vintages and they say it’s the epitome of their style, with extraordinary depth of fruit avours. The wine is handcrafted and aged in new American oak barrels and certainly has an impenetrable colour; all deep and inky russet. And it packs a punch when it comes to fruitiness, heady with aromas of plum, blackberry, earthy spice and oak, following through with generous and luscious, dark berry avour. What’s also special is the texture; silky, soft and viscous as it rolls slowly around the mouth. This is for lovers of big, rich Shiraz and it’s at 17 percent alcohol - (who needs to eat when have this kind of eshy goodness to enjoy?) Visit the cellar door in Rutherglen

TECH & SCIENCE

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ FLAP AWAY: A hummingbird can beat its wings up to 200 times per second. It’s no wonder that it must consume half it’s body weight in sugar to expel that kind of energy.

The hummingbird - nature’s most hyperactive animal

OF all the species of bird, the hummingbird (family of Trochilidae), have to take the cake as my favourite, simply for the bevy of amazing facts concernign their biology and behavioural habits. This week, I thought we’d take a look at a few of these facts, and I strongly recommend checking out some video clips of these amazing birds. 1. There are more than 325 unique hummingbird species in the world the majority of which reside in Central and South America as well as throughout the Caribbean. 2. Hummingbirds cannot walk or hop, though their feet can be used to scoot sideways while they are perched. These birds have evolved smaller feet to be lighter for more efficient flying. They will use their feet for itching and preening, however! 3. The bee hummingbird is the smallest hummingbird spe-

cies in the world and measures 2.25 inches long. It is only found in Cuba. 4. Hummingbirds have 1000-1500 feathers, the fewest number of feathers of any bird species in the world. Not only do they not need as many feathers because of their tiny size, but fewer feathers also keeps them more lightweight for easier flight. 5. The average ruby-throated hummingbird weighs three grams. In comparison, a 10 cent coin weighs 5.6 grams. It would take more than 150 ruby-throated hummingbirds to weigh one pound. Roughly 25-30 percent of a hummingbird’s weight is in its pectoral muscles. These are the broad chest muscles principally responsible for flight. 6. A hummingbird’s maximum forward flight speed is 30 miles per hour. These birds can reach up

to 60 miles per hour in a dive, and hummingbirds have many adaptations for unique flight. 7. Hummingbirds lay the smallest eggs of all birds. Their eggs measure less than 1/2 inch long but may represent as much as 10 percent of the mother’s weight at the time the eggs are laid. A hummingbird egg is smaller than a jelly bean. 8. A hummingbird must consume approximately 1/2 of its weight in sugar daily, and the average hummingbird feeds five to eight times per hour. In addition to nectar, these birds also eat many small insects and spiders, and may also sip tree sap or juice from broken fruits. 9. A hummingbird’s wings beat between 50 and 200 flaps per second depending on the direction of flight, the purpose of their flight and the surrounding air conditions. 10. An average hummingbird’s heart rate is more than

1200 beats per minute. In comparison, a human’s average heart rate is only 60-100 beats per minute at rest. At rest, a hummingbird takes an average of 250 breaths per minute. Their breathing pace will increase when they are in flight. 11. The rufous hummingbird has the longest migration of any hummingbird species. These hummers fly more than 3000 miles from their nesting grounds in Alaska and Canada to their winter habitat in Mexico. The ruby-throated hummingbird flies 500 miles nonstop across the Gulf of Mexico during both its spring and fall migrations. The peak fall migration period for hummingbirds is from mid-July through August or early September, depending on the route and the exact species. Species that nest further north generally begin

migration earlier. It is a myth, however, that these tiny birds “ride” on the back of other birds during migration - they fly this distance completely on their own. 12. Depending on the species, habitat conditions, predators and other factors, including threats to hummingbirds, the average lifespan of a wild hummingbird is three to 12 years. 13. Hummingbirds have no sense of smell but have very keen eyesight. 14. Hummingbirds do not suck nectar through their long bills, they lick it with fringed, forked tongues. Capillary action along the fringe of their tongue helps draw nectar up into their throats so they can swallow. A hummingbird can lick 10-15 times per second while feeding. Hummingbirds digest natural sucrose - the sugar found in floral nectar - in 20 minutes with 97 percent efficiency for

converting the sugar into energy. 15. Many hummingbird species, including Anna’s, Blackchinned, Allen’s, Costa’s, rufous, calliope and broad-tailed hummingbirds, can breed together to create hybrid species. This is one factor that makes identifying hummingbirds very challenging. 16. Despite their small size, hummingbirds are one of the most aggressive bird species. They will regularly attack jays, crows and hawks that infringe on their territory. Backyard birders often have one dominant hummingbird that guards all the feeders, chasing intruders away. 17. Hummingbirds are native species of the Americas and are not found outside of the Western Hemisphere except in a few zoos or aviaries. There are no hummingbirds found in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia or Antarctica.

Shenanigans in space with Seth and crew CHANNEL CHAT

THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS:

SHOW: The Orville CHANNEL: SBS Viceland TIME: Monday, 9pm

Doctor Who (ABC, Monday, 6pm) I am excited to see the new direction this show will take with the newest actor playing The Doctor, Jodie Whittaker – and also looking forward to once again catching the hijinks on fan show Whovians, which airs at 7.30pm on ABC Comedy. The Good Place (Netflix, streaming) THIS smart, irreverent and surreal comedy, which follows the adventures of four very different people as they search for their place in the afterlife, continues to go from strength to strength in its third season.

with Kylie Wilson THE voice of Seth MacFarlane will be familiar to many from his years of work on his animated sitcom Family Guy – which, while its boundarypushing, adult humour might not be to everyone’s taste, still ranks among my favourite animated shows. In recent years, he has branched out into movies – becoming the voice of the title character in the crude but

hilarious Ted, and starring as a hapless sheep farmer dealing with the harsh realities of prairie life in A Million Ways to Die in the West. His latest show, The Orville, is his foray into live action sitcoms and along with creating the show, Seth stars as the cynical Ed Mercer, who gets the chance to captain his own spaceship. The wrinkle in his plan

comes when the first officer assigned to his ship is his exwife, Kelly Grayson, whom he divorced when he discovered her cheating on him. Modelled most closely on the likes of Star Trek, while also being similar in tone to the un-

derrated movie satire, Galaxy Quest, this show – while not always laugh a minute – is a slick, well cast comedy and is plenty of fun to watch. In the vein of how Star Trek has used its plotlines over the years to explore the issues of

Tick F***ing Tock (ABC iView, streaming) Catch both parts of this illuminating documentary on comedy icons the Doug Anthony Allstars, which also explores member Tim Ferguson’s experiences living with multiple sclerosis. the day, The Orville also infuses its comedy with plenty of social commentary. There are also several engaging celebrity cameos along the way, featuring the likes of

Charlize Theron, Rob Lowe and Liam Neeson. If you want to catch up or binge on this show, it is also available to stream at SBS OnDemand.
