Hearten Up, man By BELINDA HARRISON

JOEL Clapham grew up with two younger brothers in a family home where fun, laughter and occasional fights between siblings coexisted for many years alongside the unpredictable moods of a father who suffered with mental ill-health. Joel’s father - Adrian - moved the family from Warrnambool to Thoona when Joel was 10 in the hope that the move north would present a fresh start for him. Adrian was struggling with his mental health but it was the early 1990s and people didn’t talk about mental health or admit they might be struggling, especially not if they were a ‘ man’ like Adrian. “My Dad fitted the mould for a ‘manly man’ being six foot three, fit and strong, and someone who played footy in the hard, tough and often-antagonistic way that country football was played,” Joel said. The day before Joel’s 11th birthday, Adrian walked out on his wife and sons. It wasn’t the first time, but Joel was hopeful he’d return and his parents would be happy together again. It wasn’t to be - the expectation of being a ‘man’ in a regional town, along with being told to ‘harden up’ weighed too heavily on Adrian. “The move didn’t turn out to be the panacea Dad had hoped for; he remained moody and oscillated between being emotionally distant and then quite affectionate and loving,” Joel said. Adrian moved back to Warrnambool a few months later, with Joel and his brothers seeing him most school holidays, but he was no longer involved in the day to day parenting - that was left to Joel’s mother.

Coronavirus and companion animals AFTER an outbreak in China, the new coronovirus (SARS-Cov-2) has been gaining significant worldwide attention due to its public health risk. Initially, there was no evidence for human to human contact, however, recently there have been cases of transmission of the virus through close contact. The exact source of the outbreak is still unknown, though there is no evidence that would suggest a specific animal host as a virus reservoir. There is currently no evidence that animals can catch or transmit human respiratory coronavirus. However, this is an evolving situation and more information is becoming available all the time. There has been a single case of a dog in Hong Kong testing a ‘weak positive’ for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). The dog has not shown any clinical signs and the positive result is thought to be the result of environmental contamination. The form of coronavirus which we see in domestic animals has no association with the current coronavirus outbreak. Canine coronavirus, which causes mild diarrhoea, and feline coronavirus, which can cause feline infectious peri-

with Dr Ellie Merritt, Veterinarian tonitis, are both alpha coronaviruses. The coronavirus involved in the current outbreak belongs to the betacoronavirus subfamily. This means that the coronavirus which affects people is a different genera or subfamily to the ones which affect our pets. If you are sick with COVID-19, you should avoid contact with humans and other animals while you are unwell. If your pet has come into contact with a person infected with COVID-19, you should speak with the public health officer working with the person infected or a public health official. You should undertake general pet hygiene including keeping pets out of food preparation areas, washing your hands using soap after contact with your pet, and before preparing or serving food, use separate pet food bowls and serving utensils, clean and disinfect floors regularly, wash pet beds regularly and dispose of your pets’ faeces in a hygienic manner.

with Waterwise (North East Water) ◆ KEEP YOUR GARDEN SNUG: Mulch is like a blanket on the soil. Not only do mulches conserve water and reduce the need for irrigation, they also moderate soil temperature, inhibit weed growth and, over time, improve the soil structure and health of plants.

Ensuring a water efficient garden

IMPLEMENTING simple measures such as mulching and composting ensures your garden is water efficient all the time and green even during times of drought. Mulch can reduce evaporation from soil by up to 70 per cent. Mulch is like a blanket on the soil. Not only do mulches conserve water and reduce the need for irrigation, they also moderate soil temperature, inhibit weed growth and, over time, improve the soil structure and health of plants. Mulch is an essential component of maintaining a water efficient garden. The basic rule is any mulch is better than no mulch. Kevin Walsh, author of Waterwise Gardening (Reed New Holland, Third Edition 2004), describes three kinds of mulch: Coarse mulch like pine bark, pebbles and even recycled concrete and bricks makes a long last-

ing mulch and is excellent for preventing weeds. It also is very good for keeping the soil cool, particularly if it is lightly coloured. This mulch won’t improve the soil much and in the short term will take nitrogen out of the soil. This can be compensated for by spreading some nitrogen rich fertiliser on the soil before spreading the mulch. This sort of mulch can be 50-75mm (3 inches) deep. Medium mulch like pine bark or wood chips is also excellent for reducing weeds. This sort of mulch is usually laid 25-50mm (2 inches) deep. One danger with mulches is watering too often, bringing roots up to the surface of the soil under the mulch. If the mulch goes or the surface soil dries out, when the roots are too shallow, the plants die. The solution is less frequent watering. Fine mulch like sawdust and euca can stop water getting into the soil, so don’t make it too thick

- about 25mm (1 inch) deep - and top it up each year when the ground is starting to dry out. Pea straw, cow and horse manure and compost make excellent mulches because they improve the soil and attract worms. Soil is a living thing. Compost increases the organic content of the soil which holds water and provides the material that bacteria and worms need to break down to keep your soil alive and full of nutrients. The perfect growing medium is soil that drains easily, so it doesn’t get waterlogged, but holds enough water to feed the plants and compost will do both these things. Without good soil, it won’t matter how much water you put on the garden, it still won’t do well. Compost can easily be made at home or check out local suppliers for recycled green waste mulches and compost.

All Saints Estate

2019 Bloss Field Blend IT doesn’t surprise me that couples who are expecting are often reluctant to share the names they like and are considering for their baby. Whenever there is a discussion about names the whole world wants to chime in with an opinion and it is almost impossible to find one that is universally liked. At least if you wait until the bundle of joy arrives, people will usually find something positive to say, instead of making a face and telling you about all the people they don’t like who are called the same thing. Australians love a nickname anyway, so at some point that name you sweated over will be affectionately tweaked in some way, and only used in full when the child has done something wrong. All Saints Estate’s “Bloss” is a field blend white wine; its title coming from a nickname Peter Brown used to call his daughters when they were behaving nicely. It’s made largely from Semillon fruit and has a lovely aroma of blossom, a little like honeysuckle and ripe fig fruit. But the flavour really zings with citrus and some melon, which becomes more pronounced after a little time in the glass.

Enjoy chilled and you’ll find its crispness makes it really refreshing and a good match with a wide range of foods, but particularly spicy dishes and seafood like salt and pepper squid. There’s nothing like that warm feeling you get when you remember someone you love and the sweet things they used to say. A lovely little tribute which will indeed make you smile.

This Day in History, 1908 A FIRE gutted the four storey derelict brewery in Wangaratta, which began as the Victorian Brewing and Malting Co Brewery, in 1868. The old relic, sometimes called the King Brewery, was being used at the same time as a storage place for chaff and hay, and it had become a refuge for swagmen. Perhaps a carelessly thrown match, or embers from a pipe caused the blaze.

with Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) ◆ HEALTHY AND WHOLE: Eating healthy foods doesn’t have to be difficult. If you can’t understand the ingredients on a package, then it’s very likely full of preservatives and flavour enhancers.

Where has all the fresh food gone? UNDER-nutrition of wholefoods and oversupply of sugary processed foods have become a real health issue. Clever labels scream at us from the supermarket shelves (bread with ‘added fibre and omega three’, cereal ‘fortified with B vitamins’) in an attempt to counteract the fact that these foods are devoid of any real nutrition and are laden with sugar and wheat. Today, whole foods are something found in trendy, hippy cafes. It is becoming rare to see them on a dinner table and even rarer in a lunch box. Pantries are full of packages, tins, boxes and jars. The crisper has become a small al-

most non- existent part of the fridge (if you’re lucky you may find a limp carrot). We make excuses - there is no time, we are too tired, or simply can’t remember how to prepare a meal from fresh ingredients. Healthy has become too hard - but we do try. We buy processed cereal advertised to keep us slim, the margarine that will lower cholesterol, the low fat yogurt and the skim milk to go in our iced chocolate. In an attempt to look after ourselves we have started to eat a crazy array of numbers, colours, preservatives, flavour enhancers and artificial sweeteners. Next time you are confused about

what to buy, look for the fresh foods, found in the deli, butcher, and fruit and veg aisle or greengrocers. Those humble foods that sit silently on the outskirts of the supermarket lanes, without glitzy packaging or advertising claims. Choosing healthy foods does not have to be confusing. If you cannot recognise the ingredients in the ‘food’ you eat for all the numbers and fancy words for sugar, then you are not eating food - you are eating flavour enhancers, preservatives and trans fats disguised as food and marketed as healthy and you are starving your body of nutrients.

Hearten Up to offer mental-ill health training to others From page 1

“My Mum (Chris) is extraordinary and made the decision that we’d stay here...she was a primary school teacher in Wangaratta and bought a block of land to build our family home on, which was a huge thing for a single mother to do,” Joel said. “I still loved and adored my Dad as I always had, he was my hero. “I was old enough to know he could be a difficult man but so could other dads I knew, so I didn’t think much of it beyond that.” The depth of Adrian’s ‘difficult’ nature would become apparent six years later when Joel was 16 and got called home from his part-time job to be told that his father had taken his own life. “I hated my Dad for leaving me permanently this time,” he said. “It’s nearly 22 years on and I still have a father-shaped hole in my heart that won’t ever be filled.” With Adrian’s death, Chris found

herself the true sole parent to their three children. She had no family in the area but plenty of friends who supported her in raising the boys as they all tried to deal with the grief and trauma of losing a parent and former partner to suicide. After completing his schooling at Galen College in Wangaratta, Joel studied professional writing and literature at university, was elected to various student leadership roles and moved to Melbourne for love and his job. His corporate career reached dizzying heights but one day he reached the same point of utter despair, helplessness and self-hatred he believes his father did, and his marriage collapsed. “Mum is the real hero of my life,” Joel said. “At my most despondent, when the black dog of depression had just about torn my heart from my chest,

it was my extraordinary mother who nursed me back from my suicide attempt (at age 22) and when I burnt out and broke down as my world completely collapsed (at age 34). “She’s incredible. “I had no idea how I was going to get through but when I suffered that second time, I knew that I 100 per cent wanted to get through it. “I wanted to stay alive, to be a great father to my own three children, to feel happy again, to look forward to a future.” With help from his GP, a psychologist, psychiatrist and his family, Joel was able to work through the depression and anxiety, and process the trauma of his father’s death and how it had affected him. He’s spent the past three years opening up, rebuilding himself, planning for the future and discovering what it actually is to be a good man. “I’ve become emotionally aware, compassionate, empathetic and

strong from a place of vulnerability, rather than a false facade of unbreakable, macho bulls**t,” he said. “It might sound like my whole life has been one big tragedy, but it really isn’t - there have been a lot of positives and now that I’ve got to where I am, I want to share what I’ve learnt and pass that knowledge onto others.” Joel’s mental health business ‘Hearten Up’ celebrates his journey; he delivers workshops and presentations and shares his experience from major depression and suicidal ideation to recovery and management. “Hearten Up also delivers Mental Health First Aid training for communities, organisations and individuals,” Joel said. “It’s a two-day program where participants are trained in what good mental health is, some of the mental challenges people face, the signs to look for, assessing whether

someone is in a crisis situation and then how to approach the person and situation, and provide support and encouragement and direct them to professionals to take them further. “It’s similar to physical first aid in that it gives people the knowledge and confidence to provide assistance and support their peers, to embrace being human, develop the skills and resilience to support the people around us to firstly, stay alive, and then to thrive. “People are getting more comfortable in asking others ‘are you ok?’ which is fantastic and what Mental Health First Aid does is give them help when someone’s response is ‘no, I’m not actually’. “Checking on people is really important and so is being able to help and support them.” For more information about Joel’s workshops or the upcoming training course, visit heartenup.com.au.

Levels of abstraction - Part 2

GONE FISHING

◆ CATCH AND RELEASE: This is the yellowbelly that ate the shrimp that ate the worm at Lake Nillahcootie on the weekend. I’m not sure what the worm ate.

Rainfall great for fishing RAIN, rain and more rain. It rained so heavy last week that I sighted two cows standing side by side to keep each udder dry. From the perspective of a fisherman the rain was like liquid gold falling from the sky. This will do wonders for the region’s wild trout populations, with the exception of the bushfire affected areas where the fish are in real trouble. Thanks to the rain, from now on in we should see great trout fishing for the rest of the season. The water is cooling and there is more of it. With more water comes more food, more oxygen and a greater ability for the trout to migrate upstream to spawn a bit later in autumn. The Ovens River upstream of Bright, the Kiewa River, Mitta Mitta River, upper King River, Deletite River and Howqua River are just a few of the waterways that will all be worth fishing for trout at the moment. Im staying clear of the Buffalo and Buckland rivers - they are two of my favourite trout fishing waterways but sadly they were both heavily burnt out

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA and are in poor shape. I believe they will recover but it will take time. On Saturday afternoon I went to Lake Nillahcootie and fished from the bank with bait. I caught seven yellowbelly, all undersize - six caught on worms and one on a live shrimp. You wouldn’t read about it, I cast out my worm and caught a shrimp on my worm. So I put the shrimp on the hook and cast it back out and caught a yellowbelly almost straight away. Small redfin continue to be caught at Lake William Hovell and also a bit further away at Waranga Basin. I have had no reports of larger redfin from either of these lakes, but heaps of small fish which are still fun to catch.

IN the last article, we discussed the early days of computer science - the earliest machines to take advantage of boolean logic circuits, the pitfalls and problems of those pioneering devices, and the concept of ‘levels of abstraction’. Abstraction in computer science is the notion that, as computer technology increases, each layer of that technology builds upon the other, and the subsequent interaction people have with devices and machines, along with the output, becomes more abstract. In the earliest examples of computers, people had to physically complete circuits with a plug, or a pin. Now, transistors do that heavy lifting for us - the billions of them in most devices these days grant mind-boggling processing power and complexity and we don’t even give them a second thought, let alone interact with them directly in any way. This week, we’ll talk more about early computers and how engineers eventually overcame the mechanical relays problem of the Harvard Mark 1. The Vacuum Tube If computer technology was to advance, mechanical switches to create ‘on’ and ‘off ’ states simply had to be abandoned due to their propensity to break, and their lack of speed. Something new was needed, and fortunately, it had already been invented in 1904. John Ambrose Fleming had previously created a new electrical component called a thermionic valve, an airtight glass bulb containing an electrode that could be heated in order to emit electrons in a process known as thermionic emission, and a second electrode that would attract the electrons creating a current. Fleming’s component was indeed the first vacuum tube, however, for it to be useful for computers the device required a third electrode to act as the all important switch. As luck would have it, American inventor Lee de Forest had created such a switch in 1906. And so the stage was set for a new type of computer, one that used triode vacuum tubes instead of mechanical switches - tubes that would be capable

of switching on and off thousands of times per second, propelling the speed of computers forward greatly, and marking the shift from electromechanical computing, to electronic computing. The Colossus Mark I An impressive name for an impressive computer, the Colossus Mark I was the first large scale use of vacuum tubes, designed by engineer Tommy Flowers and completed in 1943. The Colossus was used to decript Nazi communications during World War II - a story that might sound familiar, as Alan Turing had created a different, electromechanical device known as the Bombe two years prior. The Colossus Mark I contained 1600 vacuum tubes and was the first programmable electronic computer. As I said earlier, programming was achieved by plugging hundreds of wires into plugboards in order to set up the machine to perform the right operations - so it was still quite burdensome to use. The ENIAC Enter the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator, or ENIAC for short. Completed a few years after the Co-

lossus in 1946 at the University of Pennsylvania. The ENIAC was the world’s first general purpose, programmable, electronic computer. Capable of completing 5000 ten digit additions or subtractions per second, many times faster than any machine that had come before it. It was operational for ten years, and was said to have completed more arithmetic than the entire human race combined up to that point - pretty incredible really. But vacuum tubes, much like light bulbs, are prone to blowing - and the ENIAC was said to only be operational around half a day at a time By the 1950’s, vacuum tube computing was reaching its limits. Faster computers required more vacuum tubes, which made the computers more prone to malfunction, and required larger and larger spaces. Computing had reached a ceiling once more, and once again some radical new technology would be required to shatter it. Next week will conclude the look back through computing history, so stay tuned.
