WINE TALK WITH

ANITA

GROWING up in Austria, the son of an Austrian father and Australian mother, it was perhaps inevitable champion skier Chri Geiger would find himself most at home in the snow. He learnt to ski before he was even at school, and by the time he was 10 he was a fixture on the European ski racing circuit. “I loved it,” he said from Mt Hotham, which has been home since 1997. “I’m pretty lucky, coming from a skiing background.” His love for the sport was equalled by his talent on the slopes - the only junior skier selected into the Australian national team in 2005, representing Australia at the 2008 World Junior Alpine Skiing Championships, part of the 2009 World Championships Australian Alpine ski team, and competing in a range of major skiing events both at home and overseas. But a serious car accident in 2009 which severely injured his arm, spleen and liver and left him with serious brain trauma, saw him spending months undergoing intensive rehabilitation where he learnt to walk, talk and eat by himself again. Chri said that during that harrowing time, he was struck by the support he got not only from his family and support network, but from the Mt Hotham community. And he said an ever-present “drive to get back on skis” was a big motivator during his rehabilitation. continued page |

Am I depressed or having a bad day?

A curly problem

WITH BELINDA MCPHERSON BHSci., NATUROPATH

AS I was digging in my garden I came across some white grubs buried in the soil. Known by many names, curl grubs, in large numbers, can become a problem. These grubs curl up in a ‘C’ shape when disturbed, hence their common name curl grub. They have white bodies with three pairs of legs and a black, brown or orange head depending on the age of the larva. They are often incorrectly referred to as ‘witchetty grubs’ but are in fact the larva of various beetles, including Christmas beetles, African black beetle, cane beetles, dung beetles and flower scarabs. The adult beetles lay their eggs in the soil throughout summer, with the larvae active during late autumn, winter and early spring. Summer night time lighting can attract the adult female beetle that flies in and lays her eggs. Curl grubs cause damage in this larval stage because they feed on the roots of plants and grasses. Potted plants are also on the menu. As the grubs feed on the roots, they reduce the plant’s ability to take up water. This causes stress on the plant

resulting in wilting and death if not treated. Large numbers can damage lawns with distinctive yellow brown patches where the curl grubs have eaten the roots. In severe cases the lawn dies and can be lifted and rolled back like a carpet as there are no longer any roots penetrating down into the soil. An easy method of control is to soak the affected lawn with soapy water and cover with hessian or carpet. The curl grubs will come to the surface for easy collection and disposal. Chooks love eating them. So do birds like magpies and blackbirds which will dig them up and eat them. To break the breeding cycle keep the lawn area well irrigated, especially during the summer when the adult beetle is looking to lay her eggs. She doesn’t like wet soil. Chemical controls are not recommended as birds may eat the grubs and also be poisoned. Happy gardening.

WE all have days where we just don’t want to or can’t get out of our PJs. Especially as the weather turns colder, days are shorter and the fire calls us to snuggle up with a hot cuppa and a trashy movie. As naturopaths, we see a decrease in people’s moods as the weather turns colder. So, how do I know if I am depressed? If your low moods are continuous and you are having difficulty finding enjoyment in a day or removing yourself from social situations, seek help. It is out there, call a friend, speak to your healthcare provider, seek professional help- there is no shame in saying “I am having a bad day. So how do I lift myself out of this low mood? t )BWF B EBJMZ HPBM Make it simple, just having a shower and getting dressed can be a massive effort. t (FU TVOTIJOF GSFTI BJS every day. Intervertebral disc disease IN SYNC: Jessica Gallagher and Chri Geiger training together. PHOTO: Australian Paralympic Committee.

He stopped racing for himself last February and by last winter, he had become involved as a support staff member of the Australian Winter Paralympic team. The race was then on to perfect the art of being a sighted guide for a vision impaired member of the team, Melbourne based athlete Jessica Gallagher, by the time the Sochi Paralympics rolled around in September. Along the way, the pair won two gold and three silver World Cup medals, and won bronze in the giant slalom at Sochi. “It’s been a very short partnership, but it’s been a good one so far,” Chri said. He said he and Jessica have been able to work together effectively in just a small amount of time, and being a sighted guide for another skier was a simple matter of “getting them in the

best position possible” to get them down the hill. “The Paralympics was a very good experience and I was happy to help someone else achieve what they can,” Chri said. He relishes his new focus on coaching and mentoring roles, and loves giving back to other skiers, particularly with the Paralympic team and Mt Hotham Race Club. “I mentor when I can… it’s like a big family up there,” he said. Chri is taking more of a coaching role with the Paralympic athletes this winter, before taking up an assistant coaching role, with his long term sights set on preparing athletes properly for the 2018 Paralympics. “You’ve got to work within and be aware of their disability and get the most out of it,” he said. “All the things I’ve learned, I feel like they weren’t wasted.”

In general practice the disease is usually diagnosed based on the presenting signs and physical examination, with some support from plain x-rays. In more serious cases CT scans or myelograms (contrast medium enhanced x-rays) are used at specialist veterinary hospitals to help highlight bulging discs. Some cases respond well to pain relief, rest and anti-inflammatories whereas more severe cases require surgery to decompress the spine. Treatment is usually much more successful if started early before the dog becomes fully paralysed. If your pet is showing signs of weakness in 1, 2, 3 or 4 legs it is important to have things assessed early on to provide a better prognosis for recovery.

THE bones of the spine are separated by shock absorbing cartilages called intervertebral discs. These discs allow the spine to flex side to side and up and down as the dog moves around. The spine of a dog undergoes a lot more movement than the spine of a human and as a result takes a lot of strain throughout life. As our pets get older these discs get a little stiffer and in more extreme results can become calcified and hard. In older dogs, or in younger dogs that undergo a traumatic twisting force on the spine, the discs can prolapse or bulge their central material into the spinal canal where compression of the spinal cord occurs. The location of the disc bulge or prolapse determines the signs that develop. As a result of the compression on the spinal cord there is nerve dysfunction downstream (ie towards the tail) of the affected disc. So a disc bulge in the neck leads to progressive weakness in both the front and hind legs, whereas a disc bulge in the thoracic or lumbar spine leads only to weakness or progressive paralysis in the hind legs. Intervertebral disc disease seems to more often affect small breed dogs, with some breeds such as dachshunds affected even more commonly. Signs can be mild (weakness in the legs and pain in the back) or very severe (full paralysis of the limbs) and often get worse with time.

BOOK

The Word Ghost by Christine Paice ENGLAND 1973, and fifteen-year-old Rebecca Budde is forced to move with her family to a quiet new village, Brightley. There’s two ghosts, a pub, a dog and Alex March, a dark and brooding artist, living in the Manor House down the road, whose interest in Rebecca is both puzzling and thrilling. Published by Allen and Unwin

THE other day I received a rather surprising phone call from my friend, Mindy, a single lady who one day hopes to meet her Prince Charming. “Mindy and Dave,” she announced as I picked up the phone. “What do you think?” “Mindy and Dave? What are we talking about?” I asked, perplexed. “How does it sound? “Personally I think it has a nice ring to it, don’t you?” she replied. “Who’s Dave?” I asked, excited that my friend must have a new beau. “Well, he’s someone who’s just emailed me,” she said My mouth silently did the old ‘uh oh’ thing as I considered the potential implications of my friend becoming entranced by some stranger over the internet. “Umm. What did he email you about?” I asked, trying not to sound like the wowser I really am. “Well.” she said, excitedly settling in to give me the whole lowdown. “His email’s subject title was ‘Mindy, will you partner me?’ “Isn’t that quaint? ‘Will you partner me?’ “Awww! He sounds like such a legitimate, old fashioned kinda guy, doesn’t he?” I could hear the amusement in her voice so I played along. “Oh yes.” I said, “he sounds very genuine. Do you think you’ll contact him?” “Sure. Why not? “After all, with an opening line like that, he’s sure to be legitimate. “Not like some of those smarmy scammers who say things like, ‘Mindy, let’s hook up.’ “Nah. This one’s a real gentleman.” “I think you’re right, Mindy.” I agreed. “You should email him straight back and send him your photo. “Give him that nice photo-shopped, glam one you had done a few years ago. “He’ll love that one. And it does kind of look a bit like you….” “Yeah, I was thinking I might do that,” said Mindy. “I wonder where he lives? Perhaps he’s a rich oilman from Texas?

BY CATHERINE WARNOCK “Or a wealthy Frenchman living on the Riviera? “Maybe he wants me to join him there?” “I wonder if he’ll pay for your flights?” I asked playfully. “Well, he did mention something about having a wonderful surprise for me, if only I could text him my credit card details. I assume he’s capital-rich but cash-poor at the moment. I’m sure he’ll repay my airfare when I arrive at his… I mean ‘our’…..luxury mansion.” “Oh definitely,” I agreed. “Someone who asks you to ‘please partner me’ is definitely your paying back kind of guy.” Mindy said, “I’ll just send him a little message, giving my full bank account details, my street address, my home and mobile phone numbers, my tax file and Medicare numbers, the keys to my house and my mother’s maiden name. “Surely there’s no harm in that.” “Great idea.” I enthused. “And even if he does turn out to be a bit creepy, you can just put it all down to experience. “And if he fleeces every cent out of your bank accounts? Ah well. Who needs money anyway? “The quest for true love is waaaaay more important. You go, girl.” “Oh, thanks so much,” Mindy sighed. “It’s been so great talking to someone who understands and doesn’t judge me. “So many of my friends and family would have been warning me to either delete Dave’s wonderful email or, at the very least, to show extreme caution. “But not you. You’re a true friend. So supportive and wise. “I’ll be sure to invite you over to the mansion when I get settled in. I’m sure Dave will be okay with that. “After all, he seems like such a genuinely nice guy.” And with that Miss Mindy bade her farewell and hung up. I went back to my work, smiling smugly, knowing I’d perhaps just helped pave the road to true love.

WITH ANITA McPHERSON golden color and a delicate aroma of gooseberry and pear. The flavor is lightly fruity and herbaceous with gooseberry, melon and lemongrass, and it has an invigorating, sherbet-like zing. I found it completely refreshing on its own, but it would also be a great accompaniment to simple white fish or blue swimmer crab. In summer that might be in the form of sashimi, but in winter it’s more likely to be battered as fish and chips or in a buttery ravioli parcel. It’s important to have a little extra energy in store when you’re trying to keep warm. Available at local outlets or visit: www.cofieldwines.com.au.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

Railway accident in Barnawartha, 1982 THE driver and fireman of a goods train were killed when their train ran into the rear of the Spirit of Progress in fog on June 17, 1982 at 7.50am. The Spirit of Progress had been delayed by engine problems, and the guard had just time to jump for safety as the goods train hit. Had the goods train been fully laden, its impact could have demolished a number of the passenger carriages of the Spirit.

WE had a birthday in the family this week, and finding time to make a birthday cake by two, one for home and one for daycare, was a feat in itself. We had to resort to buying a cake from one of our customers, and with two hours to spare, I managed to make cupcakes for daycare and they looked so cute, I thought I would share the recipe with you. Method Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius. In a bowl with the electric mixer on medium-high speed, beat sugar and butter together until light and fluffy, 2-3 minutes. Add the egg, egg white, and ½ tsp vanilla extract, beat until combined. In another bowl whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt, add the flour mixture in three additions, alternating with the milk in two additions, beating on low speed until just combined; scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed. Divide the batter evenly among the prepared muffin cups, filling each about three-fourths full.

Bake until lightly golden and a toothpick inserted in centre of a cup cake comes out clean, for 18–20 minutes. Let the cupcakes cool in the pan on a wire rack for five minutes. Transfer the cupcakes to the wire rack to cool completely cool. The cupcakes can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to three days; bring to room temperature before finishing.

Vanilla Cupcakes > 200gm plain flour > ¼ tsp baking powder > ¼ tsp salt > 250gm sugar > 90gm unsalted butter, at room temperature > 1 large egg plus 1 large egg white, at room temperature > 1 tsp vanilla essence > 125ml whole milk > Basic buttercream or butter icing > Smarties, animal decorations

WHILE many people may be starting to get impatient as they wait for the arrival of some serious snow, it certainly feels like it is not far away, now the air has that distinctive June chill. It’s definitely time to protect those frost sensitive plants and cover those frost sensitive noses when we head outside to enjoy the bright blue sky and sunshine. While I’m the sort of person who would rather spend my time in the warmth of the lodge than balancing on the ski lift, I can appreciate the excitement and exhilaration friends say they feel when they’re carving up the slopes. What I do like is the crispness and purity of the high country air, and it’s one of the reasons I really enjoy cool climate whites. Cofield Wines Sauvignon Blanc is made from Alpine and King Valley fruit, and what appeals to me is its clarity and freshness. It has a clear, sun-kissed

Retailers and the budget Accountants reveal top five EOFY mistakes by SMEs THE end of financial year (EOFY) is just around the corner and Australia’s EOFY experts have revealed the most common slip-ups small to medium enterprise (SME) clients make around this crucial time of year. These include miscoding bank transactions and no contact with their accountant over the financial year. In an Institute of Public Accountants (IPA) member survey conducted in partnership with MYOB for the second year running, 56 per cent of respondents said their clients were almost prepared with submitting their EOFY statements but just needed to finalise a few things. Some 40 per cent said their clients try but need much more preparation, while four per cent said their clients weren’t prepared at all. No respondents said their clients were completely prepared. Top mistakes made with EOFY statements The survey suggests a growing proportion of business operators are not making contact with their accountant over the financial year and are not making the most of their accounting software functionality. However, business operators are making

inroads into their accounts and record keeping. 1. Miscoding bank transactions (65 per cent) – on par with last year’s survey. 2. Not keeping accounts and records up-to-date throughout the year (58 per cent), slightly down on 62 per cent. 3. No contact with their accountant over the financial year (58 per cent), up from 42 per cent. 4. Does not provide enough detailed or supporting information (49 per cent), down on 64 per cent. 5. Not fully trained up on accounting software functionality (46 per cent), up from 39 per cent. When asked about the most important steps business operators could take to prepare for EOFY, accountants ranked ‘advise on any major transactions throughout the year as they happen (sale of land, shares etc.)’ first (91 per cent). Second equal was ‘responding to requests for additional information in a timely manner’ (84 per cent) and ‘clarity and consistency of information provided in support of their financial statement’ (84 per cent). Third was ‘ensure all documents sent through are labelled/organised’.

THE nights have been getting colder, but it may be too late for some retailers, who have large stocks of winter goods on the shelves. According to some reading I have been doing, it appears shoppers are staying away in droves from retailers who are saying the tough budget has everyone nervous about spending. Predictions are that recovery for an industry that is worth $100 billion and has some 450,000 employees is not likely to occur until later in the year. This will give the shoppers time to see what effect the new Senate will have on Treasurer Joe Hockey’s budget, and the weather reverts to normal patterns. Ultimately consumers could be the winners with big discount sales after July as retailers burdened with unwanted stock start slashing prices to make room for next season’s stock. Just last week, two of Australia’s leading retailers added their names to a growing list of retailers who are blaming the weather and the budget for a downturn in profits. One, The Reject Shop, announced that it was unlikely to meet the full year profit expectation of $17 million to $18 million, instead downgrading expectations to between $14.5 million and $15.5 million. And did investors punish them that day by wiping 11.4 per cent off the share price. They reported that sales took a sharp drop in the week of the budget release and The Reject Shop CFO Darren Briggs said “we know that’s been the general consensus out there in the market”. The other retailer, Pac Brands - with top selling clothing brands including Bonds, Berlei and Hard Yakka - saw their boss John Pollaers comment that he was surprised how fast sales fell following the budget, with the weather also ruining forecasts. “At the moment, the perfect storm has seen a surprising shift in consumer sentiment, more than I would have expected, and the warm weather, which, unfortunately, does affect our business,” Mr Pollaers said. It was only a couple of weeks ago that women’s fashion chain Noni B issued an earnings warning,

kclarke@alphalink.com.au saying sales had been constricted in both April and May which they put down to unseasonably warm weather leading into winter as well as reduced spending by its core customers after the budget. Australian National Retailers Association chief executive Margy Osmond said the sector was doing it tough. She said typically there was a dip in spending after a federal budget was released. “But usually that picks up around June, but this time we have the ongoing uncertainty because we don’t know what’s happening in the Senate…I think what we are looking at is a recovery later than June. So probably push that bounce back off a few months,” she said. I also believe older shoppers are doing more on-line than ever before as computer prices are at an all-time low and with some of our retailers offering incentives to shop on-line a lot have taken the plunge and learnt to use a computer. I had someone (in their 60s) say to me the other day they very rarely go up the main street these days, it is so easy to ring and have things home delivered and why should I spend half the day out in the weather when I can shop from home. White goods and furniture, as well as holidays and if you live in the capital cities all sorts of deals on restaurants, coffee and cake shops will have all the things you need delivered to your door. It is no wonder Australia Post parcels are booming. And this has not deterred overseas conglomerates like Cosco and Aldi from expanding their operations into Australia. But from all accounts the Woolworths aligned Masters Stores are not pushing ahead as quickly as they would have liked with the public still preferring to shop at Wesfarmers’ Bunnings which is booming in Wangaratta given the extensions being carried out.
