◆ COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS: Bill Wilson and Karenne Thistleton are among the Indigo Shire locals involved in arranging the annual Kerferd Oration. PHOTO: Coral Cooksley

By KYLIE WILSON

FROM the forums of ancient Rome, where the religious, political and philosophical issues of the day were often discussed and debated, to the rising popularity of TED talks on the internet, humanity’s thirst for public debate has remained high for centuries. One of the best known local forums for the highlighting and discussion of issues in our society is the annual Kerferd Oration, which occurs in Beechworth each July and is now in its 15th year. This year, the speaker will be Northern Territory senator Malarndirri McCarthy, a Yanyuwa woman from the Gulf country in the Northern Territory and a Northern Territory Senator, and those on the organising committee said they are proud to be involved in the event. Committee chair Karenne Thistleton has been on the committee for three years, having joined upon moving to Beechworth almost four years ago. She said she first attended the Kerferd Oration in 2015, to hear Dr Simon Longstaff AO, who spoke about “visible” and “invisible” people in society. Continued page 3

FEATURE STORY

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) FELINE ImmunodeďŹ ciency Virus (FIV) is a common virus that affects cats in Victoria and Australia as a whole. It is a virus speard most commonly by cat bites often from feral or stray male cats, but can be spread by any cat. The virus over time suppresses the immune system leading to increased suspectibilty to infections and certain cancers. The FIV virus is closely related to HIV, but luckily humans cannot catch FIV. How do you know if your cat is infected? Once infected, a cat may take years before the virus becomes active and starts to cause clinical signs. The exact time between infection and clinical signs varies greatly between cats. Most cats that have FIV often are taken to the vet for seemingly unrelated infections e.g. urinary tract infections, skin infection, gingivitis, and others. Some cats will develop enlarged lymph nodes, fever or lose weight as a direct

with Felix DeNatris, BvSc VETERINARIAN result of FIV infection. Often your veterinarian will recommend testing for FIV if you have an outdoor cat that is having repeated or recurrent infections. Diagnosis is based on a simple blood test. There unfortunately is no current cure for FIV. The disease is generally managed by treating infections and other conditions as they arise. How can FIV be prevented? Avoidance is the safest way to protect your cat, by keeping your cat/s indoors or in a cat run. Minimising feral cat populations by desexing all cats. Vaccines are also widely available - a course of three vaccines 2-6 weeks apart followed by yearly boosters generally given at the same time as your cat’s core vaccines. If you are concerned about your cat and potential FIV exposure, contact your veterinarian to discuss testing.

◆ HIGH PROFILE SPEAKER: Malarndirri McCarthy is this year’s Kerferd Oration speaker.

Sparking discussions

“I found it really interesting, she said, adding she was “interested in that whole issue of social policy. Since becoming part of the committee, Karenne said she has been passionate about promoting the oration as a way for everyday people to engage with the big issues confronting society. “Our idea is just to challenge people’s ideas about things, she said. She said bringing Ms McCarthy to town to speak at the oration came from continued feedback from people wishing to hear about indigenous issues. It is a subject she is keenly interested in, having worked on policy for many years in Canberra as a public servant, including indigenous policy. Karenne said the work of the oration’s organising committee happens throughout the year, including contact and interaction with other community groups, from footballers to school students. She added that she loved listening to the speakers each year, and it often gives her valuable food for thought. “All of the people have been incredibly informative, she said. been part of the oration from both sides of the lectern, having given his own oration in 2012 about Australia’s ďŹ rst Australian-born Governor-General, Sir Isaac Isaacs. Sir Isaacs is indelibly linked with the region, having been educated in Yackandandah and Beechworth and going on to make his mark in politics and the High Court before becoming Governor-General. A dedicated historian, Dr Wilson said he has been involved with the oration committee for almost four years. He said the oration was a valuable event for the Beechworth area, with positive effects including attracting tourists, creating community discussion and debate, and exposing the area to a wider audience. He added that it attracts consistent crowds every year, although who attends the oration depends on the topic being discussed. “If you try to ďŹ nd something that’s interesting, people will turn up,â€? he said. Senator McCarthy said she is very much looking forward to being part of this year’s oration.

“I am very much looking forward to speaking at the Kerferd Oration, she said. “Events like this are just one way that Australians connect and talk about what brings us together as a community. “The theme of my speech is Our Island Home – Be Bold and Brave in a United Vision for Australia. “Australia is at a point where our leaders and communities need to make some difficult decisions. “We have seen hundreds of thousands of Australians support and work towards recognition of First Nations People in the Constitution and a voice to parliament. “We currently have a unique opportunity to take a giant step towards reconciliation and equality. The Kerferd Oration will be held on Sunday, July 29 at the George Kerferd Hotel, starting at 11am, with doors opening at 10.15am. The Oration will be followed by a community lunch, and for those attending, donations for the lunch will be appreciated. More information is available on www.kerferdoration.org.au.

Busy time in the mountains WITH the snow season hitting its stride, there is so much to see and do in our alpine areas. This Friday at Falls Creek will see the Rossignol Children’s Cup, followed closely by the Cranky Charlie Cup, which give skiers of all ages a chance to test out their skills on the mountain’s race course. This Saturday, July 14, will also see the King of the Mountain event on Falls Creek, which is the final race in the Snowracer series. If you’ve always wanted to learn more about snowsport, check out the Snowsports Industry of Australia Demo Days at Falls Creek on Saturday and Sunday, or cheer on some talented youngsters a the South Australian Interschools Snowsport Championships this Sunday. Over at Mt Hotham, you can enjoy the Legoland® Discovery Centre Melbourne,

which runs until July 17, or check out the Interschools Training and Trial Series throughout this weekend, which are focused on moguls and giant slalom racing. Meanwhile, Mt Buller will host their second Snowracer event this Saturday, and the mountain will host the South Australian Schools Snowsports on July 18. Mt Buffalo continues to be a popular destination for visitors, particularly over school holidays, and park staff said that because of the chance of rapidly changing weather conditions, motorists should always carry chains to be ready to fit them when directed. See the Parks Victoria snow reports outlining conditions and chain requirements at ski hires in the valley below and also on the Mount Buffalo Ski School Facebook page. Whatever mountain you’re visiting,

keep an eye on snow cams or ask at your local ski hire business or tourism information centre to find out current snow levels, snow chain fitting advice, and weather at resorts around the area.

Day care lunch boxes THE start of each school term always generates a lot of discussion by health professionals and parents about healthy lunch boxes. Although the same principles apply for younger kids at daycare, the way we present these in the lunch box is often different. 1-4 year olds often prefer to snack, graze and eat ‘when they are hungry’. Most of the time, when attending a daycare group that requires you to BYO lunch box, children’s eating times are less structured, making it easier for them to follow their own appetites. I really like the idea of “parents choose what to eat, children choose “when and how much they eat. Of course, this is within reason –

you don’t want them eating at midnight in bed! Convenience is often the main conict parents have when choosing ‘healthy options’. This is my speciality! This Day in History, 1906 JULY 1906 saw a new appearance by the so called Tantanoola Tiger, this time around Killawarra. It looked to be an animal three feet high, four feet long, and marked like a tiger, but it seemed noone could track it down. The legend of the tiger had been alive since the mid 1890s, when a young man near the small South Australian township of Tantanoola saw a huge animal carrying a sheep. After years more of disappearing sheep and sightings, an Assyrian wolf was shot while attacking sheep, and a local publican had the animal stuffed and put on display.

TECH & SCIENCE

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ WEARABLES: Could wearable technologies become a good compromise between granting us online access while reducing our reliance on screen-staring activities?

Could a screenless future save social interactions? SCREENS are so 2017. Okay, you got me - hell will freeze over before I get bored of looking at my PC screen, or my tv screen, or my phone screen, or my ereader screen, or my tablet screen, or going to the cinema to look at a giant screen...I may have a problem. Since the advent of the first home televisions, people have been obsessed with staring at these large, shiny rectangles of endless entertainment, so much so that in 2016, a survey conducted by the organisation ‘R U OK?’ found that Australians spent eight times as many hours per week staring at screens than they did with their loved ones. That’s a sobering statistic, if ever there was one. This year, the World Health Organisation listed gaming addiction (and by extension the screen staring associated with

it) as a diagnosable mental disorder. With so much time dedicated to locking our eyes onto screens, it’s small wonder that, even though technology has drastically broadened our communities, encompassing the entire globe in many instances, people are becoming more socially isolated in their immediate surroundings. After all, if it’s easy to catch up with a friend who lives three hours away from you via Facebook or some other form of social network, the incentive to go and visit them in the flesh can lessen significantly. Additionally, with ready access to online communities of people who hold nearly identical beliefs and values as you do - or who share the same interests - the impetus to go

out and meet people in your town with whom you might only slightly kick it off with - if you’re lucky - dies off pretty rapidly. Say what you will about the ‘Japanese RPG Furry Cosplay Fanatics’ subreddit, but you know exactly what type of people are going to be posting on there. You couldn’t say the same of the crowd in the local night spot on any given evening. It’s much easier and more convenient to sit at home staring at your computer screen and chat to your online pals. It may simply be a matter of perspective, but if the trend of screen-time over real-time continues and intensifies, I think it paints a very bleak future. If invocations of Godwin’s law are any indication, we’re

KADE BROWN QUINTET

already seeing a marked increase in pretty severe tribalism, as more and more people are quick to slap anyone who slightly disagrees with them on a political matter with the label of fascist or a Nazi. Online bullying, too, is a scourge of the modern era, and the instances of this seem to get worse with every sorry news headline. As a species, this form of online screen-communication is very new to us, and perhaps, with time, we will mature into it, and understand it better. Or perhaps the answer will be to do away with screens all together, and embrace what might be the next stage in a technological advancement - screenless devices. As the big tech companies look at new ways to innovate,

we’re seeing the rise of devices that, although they afford us online connectivity and methods of communication, they do so sans a screen. With the implementation of artificial intelligence’s such as Amazon’s Alexa and Google’s Assistant, consumers are able to let their devices do the online searching for them via voice commands, allowing them to stay in the real world, rather than be glued to a screen. On top of this, we’re seeing more wearable devices that also allow us to connect to the internet in a far less obtrusive manner. And while augmented reality is largely relegated to gimmickry in its present form and application, there seems to be plenty of room to expand the technology in such ways that allow us to maintain our

focus on our immediate surroundings yet accomplish online tasks. And perhaps last but not least, the idea of an implant that sends information straight to your brain has been around for a while, but major universities are continually reporting progress with brain implants used in lab rats and humans, while commercial applications for noninvasive coupling with human brain signals are also emerging. Japanese company, Necomimi, has even developed cat ears that can be worn on the human head and manipulated using only the human mind. This may sound banal, but the underlying technology behind this kind of mind control could have huge implications for developing screenless technologies.

THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS:

with SIMONE KERWIN IF you’re at that stage of the school holidays when all entertainment possibilities have just about been exhausted, why not consider planning a ‘retro’ Batman night for Friday? SBS Viceland screens two episodes of the classic 1960s series each Friday from 7.30pm, in what has become a regular fixture in our household routine. Even for younger members of the family who have been

raised on the slick cinematic superheroes of the modern age, it is an absolute delight to slip back into the era when Adam West and Burt Ward wore the silkiest, shiniest capes ever known to crime-fighting. From the familiar theme music (you won’t be able to resist singing that “Na-na-nana-na-na-na-na, Na-na-na-nana-na-na-na, Batman!” line), to the double entendres that will

entertain adults while floating right over kids’ heads, it’s a whole lot of fun. During the fight scenes, we compete to see who can pick the next sound effect that will pop up on screen; will it be ‘Kapow!’, ‘Boff!’, ‘Wham!’, or something completely from left field? If Batman and Robin are

climbing a wall, you can name the guest star who pops out unexpectedly from a window; the labels on equipment in the Batcave are endlessly chuckleinducing; and if you’re really lucky, Batman will dance the Batusi while rounding up the bad guys. For those who grew up with

this show as their only reference to the Caped Crusader, it’s comforting to know that despite all the new incarnations, Alan Napier is still the best Alfred, and Neil Hamilton will always be Commissioner Gordon. Throw in Cesar Romero’s

iconic Joker, and Burgess Meredith’s imprint on the Penguin’s laugh, not to mention the preGirlpower moves of Yvonne Craig’s Batgirl/Barbara Gordon, and there is plenty to entice young viewers, and keep their carers happy too.
