Fighting fires for stronger communities By MITCHELL GASTIN
SOME people look for more ways than one to help out their local community and Monique Hillenaar of Wangaratta is no exception. The 29-year-old is currently working as part of the recreation team for the Rural City of Wangaratta and fills her spare time as a Country Fire Authority (CFA) volunteer with the Wangaratta Urban Fire Brigade. Monique has been working with the brigade for over two years now and has found the experience to be rewarding beyond measure. “It’s that self-fulfilment and knowing what I’m capable of achieving that makes it so rewarding,” Monique said. “I’ve learnt so much along the way through experiences that I otherwise wouldn’t have if I wasn’t a volunteer. “It also ties in really nicely with my council involvement in working for the community.” Monique has been involved with the CFA’s operational activities, which includes providing assistance at a live fire site.

Feeding rabbits THERE are many products available that are sold as rabbit foods, but many of these do not actually take into account the digestive requirements of the rabbit intestinal tract. Rabbits should consume 80 per cent of their dietary intake as roughage. This should be provided as fresh grass or grass/pasture hay. Lucerne and clover hays should be avoided as they are too high in protein and calcium. It is essential for their digestive health that they take in grass or hay each day. Free access to grass or a reasonable amount of hay should be provided. Make sure to keep stored hay dry and clean as mould growth on hay can be harmful. Hay is available in smaller bags from pet stores or in larger bales from a farm supply store. Leafy greens and vegetables are also a good part of the diet and these should make up the other 20 per cent. You can offer two packed cups of leafy greens per kilogram of bodyweight each day. Some good options are broccoli, cabbage, celery, carrot or beetroot tops (green leafy parts), spinach leaves or bok choy. Basil, parsley or coriander can also
with Tim Craig BVSc, Veterinarian Felix DeNatris BvSc, Veterinarian be offered for variety. A mixture of three different green vegetables each day is a good mix. Contrary to popular belief and cartoon rabbit fame large amounts of carrots are not a good idea. You can provide some ‘treats’ like carrot, sweet potato and most fruits. These should be limited to one to two tablespoons per rabbit per day. You should avoid any cereals, grains, nuts, sweets, sugar, breakfast cereals and chocolate. Many rabbit pellet mixes with colourful pieces do not actually provide balanced nutrition and these should be avoided. Try to keep feeding consistent from day to day. Provide plenty of access to fresh water and sunlight. Rabbits also like things to chew on, such as a block of wood (untreated pine or similar). Remember above all else – free access to grass and hay to make up the majority of the diet.

◆ BILLY BUTTON: These golden harbingers of spring are spectacular when mass-planted.
Billy Buttons - springtime blooms PYCNOSORUS is a genus of flowering plants in the daisy family commonly known as Billy Buttons or Drumsticks. Pycnosorus globosus is local to North East Victoria. It is a clumping perennial with an underground rhizome, and strappy, grey woolly leaves. The globular flower heads are held high above the foliage on strong stalks. Extensive stands can be seen growing in shallow depressions on heavy clay soils or in ditches along roadsides. These areas flood in winter and dry out during summer. The name is derived from the Greek, pycne, thick and sorus, heap; referring to the dense flower heads. “Globosus” refers to the globular shape of the flower heads. Flowering is from mid-spring
through to summer. P. globosus grows best in full sun. Plants are drought and frost tolerant once established. Mature plants may have many flower heads. If spent flowers are removed, more blooms will be encouraged. The flower heads dry well and can be used in dried flower arrangements. Billy Buttons are a great feature plant for the home garden. These golden harbingers of spring are spectacular when massplanted, in small clumps among springflowering annuals or as a feature pot plant. Children love them! Their desirability for the florist trade has contributed to them being harvested non-sustainably. Licensing permits are now strictly enforced. Both seed and plants of P. globo-
sus are readily available commercially. P. globosus can be propagated from cuttings or seed. Like many plants of the daisy family, cuttings root readily. If growing from seed, allow for an after-ripening period of about three months before sowing. Seeds from spent flower heads can be stored in a zip-top plastic bag in the freezer. Break up the flower heads to release the seed, and surface sow in seed trays in autumn, keep moist. Prick out seedlings at the twoleaf stage. Fertilise the developing plants with soluble fertiliser. Transplant into garden beds or pots when well-developed. Plants grown from seed may take more than a year to produce flower heads.

WINE TALK
Rutherglen Estates
ALL the signs are indicating that spring has finally arrived. The fruit trees are just about to blossom, the bees are hovering in anticipation of those buds finally opening, and the magpie is eyeing me off from the safety of the driveway fence. There’s also been a lot of squawking and carrying on in recent weeks as local magpie families patrol their territorial borders and with the longer days, the warbling begins even before the sun rises. The wine list at home will also begin to change with crisper, lighter wines moving to the front of the fridge, while the creamier more complex wines take a bit of a back seat. Rutherglen’s dry style Rosé is one that springs out as a top choice in warmer weather and is particularly enjoyable when well chilled. The 2018 vintage was apparently a good one in the region, the consistently warm weather conducive to bringing out great fruit colour and flavour. The Rose is certainly a pretty pink drop, made from Grenache with a touch of Shiraz grapes and while there are subtle fruit flavours reminiscent of strawberry, there’s a definite dry, spic-

iness from the Grenache. It’s a cleansing and refreshing sensation but there is also some muskiness which adds interest, and also makes it really compatible with spicy food like a Massamum curry or stir fried prawns. It’s important to embrace the change in season, which is why I’ll be waving a white flag next time I walk down the driveway. This Day in History, 1912 THE last surviving member of the syndicate which opened up the rich McEvoy mine, Michael O’Neill, died on this day in 1912 at the age of 93. Michael O’Neill was born in Ireland in 1819. He emigrated to America, where he heard about the gold strikes in Australia. Coming to the Woolshed area with three of his mates, he passed over the spot where “Big” Johnson later sank the shaft which produced gold by the bucket-full, and became a tin miner with his own smelting works on the Woolshed. In 1857, with fourteen other shareholders, he struck it rich with the McEvoy mine at Eldorado. He later took up farming at East Wangaratta.
with Naturopaths Belinda McPherson and Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) ◆ A LOT ON YOUR MIND: Prolonged stress and anxiety can run you down and fatigue you quickly.
Many ways to treat fatigue
FATIGUE is one of the most common reasons people walk in our door and sit across from us in a consultation. Fatigue is more than just feeling tired. Fatigue is a condition in which you feel exhausted all the time, even if you are well rested. It is not a normal part of getting older or a birthright of being a mum or for those who are stressed and anxious — it is a symptom of something that is wrong. There are many different causes of fatigue, so you should see your doctor to do some testing to find out why you are so tired, and your naturopath if there is still no explanation or you want to improve your diet and lifestyle and use natural medicines to assist getting more energy.
Fatigue comes in many different guises. Fighting an infection, when our emotional health has not been well supported, not keeping up with our lifestyle, burn out and stress. As such there are many ways to treat fatigue. Types of fatigue: Stress and anxiety: Running on nervous energy, being chronically stressed, catastrophising, not plugging in/taking time to unwind will run our batteries pretty low pretty fast. Nutritional deficiencies: These are more common than you would think. In particular running low in Magnesium, B vitamins, iron and calcium can make us pretty zonked. Some of these can be checked for on a blood test like B12 and Iron, oth-
ers we simply use clinical signs, like nail, tongue, skin and muscle signs. And then we have our NES scan, which also alerts us to which nutrients you are drawing on in large quantities right now. Post viral fatigue: When you have been sick and the main symptoms are gone and the virus is no longer contagious, but you are left with lethargy and very little energy reserves. Often as a result of not convalescing during the virus, this can, if not addressed, turn into chronic fatigue syndrome. Glandular fever is a common infection that leads to this type of fatigue, but in truth, any virus where you haven’t convalesced properly can lead to this.

“I get paged when a fire call comes in and then we basically decide whether we’re available to respond or not,” she said. “It involves getting in the truck and responding to a variety of things ranging from a smell of gas to a grass and shrub fire. “We also have training once a week on Monday nights, sometimes it is theory-based or practical like when we take on real fire simulation scenarios at the training facility.” It was almost by chance that Monique found herself working as a volunteer firefighter for more than a year while she was living in Canada after a friend referred her husband, Kasey, to join in while they were overseas. Monique said her husband was initially “hesitant” to get involved, so she joined him in
support during the sign-up process and got swept up in it. “I went along just tagging behind him and it turned out I ended up getting involved which was not something I anticipated doing,” she said. “It’s been great that we’ve been on this journey together so when we approached the urban brigade we came with a bit of experience already which assisted us in slotting in. “What kept me doing it after I came back from Canada was having that hands-on practical experience… I like being fit and this sort of encourages me to maintain my fitness and have that hands-on physical activity.” Monique has previously joined her husband in a gruelling stair climb as a volunteer firefighter to raise funds for cancer programs alongside in Canada and the Melbourne
Firefighter Stair Climb last Saturday to raise awareness for mental health, suicide and PTSD. “We did the stair climb back in Canada in support of the Well Spring Calgary, which provides programs and resources to people affected by cancer,” she said. “It was super rewarding and a great experience for us and we got a real sense of achievement so when we saw Melbourne was doing one, it really made sense for us.” Being part of the CFA team to help protect the community has given Monique the opportunity to overcome wild challenges and take on new experiences, which would be beneficial for anyone interested in volunteering. “I think a lot of people don’t realise the impact it can have,

not only on the community, but themselves,” Monique said. “It’s easy for people to say they don’t have the time but you can contribute as little or as much as you like, even if it’s just a couple of hours here and there. “It’s quite a rewarding thing to give back to the community and meet other people and be part of this social network of volunteers… you do really get to know the community and who is in it through volunteering.” The Wangaratta Urban Fire Brigade has invited anyone interested in joining the like-minded team of CFA volunteers to attend a free information session at the Wangaratta Fire Station at 7pm this Thursday, September 12. For more information visit the Wangaratta Fire Brigade Facebook page.

“IF you want to make an omelette, you have to break some eggsâ€?, the saying goes - but during National Science Week last month, year 7 Wangaratta High School students had to do their very best to put all their eggs in a basket and keep them intact. Tasked with designing and building a shock absorbing system which could assist the Lunar module as it landed on the moon’s surface, students set about brainstorming and developing a parachute and capsule system that could safely transport a fresh egg from an elevated height to the ground below. With nothing but a list of materials reminiscent of Apollo 13 - freezer bags, string, sinkers and scissors - the challenge was great, but the Wangaratta High School students were equal to it, as they researched the scientiďŹ c principles of force, gravity, mass and acceleration to create the best landing system they could. And I understand, and am happy to report that no eggs were harmed during the egg-speriments well done students. Alongside the parachute tests, more students were asked to devise a water recovery system - a device or series of processes that would purify water that held contaminants. NASA uses water recovery systems to recycle wastewater while in space in order to reduce the net mass of water and consumables that would be required to be launched with a shuttle. Students were challenged to create such a system with simple materials such as PET bottles, ďŹ lter paper, cotton wool and even rocks, and had to measure the resultant ďŹ ltered water via a pH indicator.
But the fun and learning doesn’t end with National Science Week, as Wangaratta High School will be busy over the next few months introducing a range of STEM related programs and tools for their students and teachers respectively. Perhaps foremost among them will be the ‘Makerspace’ an area replete with a variety of electronics, computers, and software applications such as VEX robotics and Raspberry Pi’s (pocket sized computers) which will enable students to design, build and explore and ultimately expand their skill-sets and critical thinking faculties to tackle the challenges unique to the 21st century. In an age of the internet of things, the ability to adapt, problem solve and traverse a rapidly changing landscape of technologies is of paramount importance, and I’m very happy to see our local schools making strong strides toward those goals. Having received sponsorship from CRM developer Salesforce, Wangaratta High School has been given funding in aide of these spaces and will look to further integrate STE(A)M across their curriculum in recognition of the fact that science and technology has become an all encompassing part of our lives - especially so in the professional sphere. I’m very thankful to have been invited along to Wangaratta High School, and am very excited to see what comes next - so stay tuned. t *G ZPVS TDIPPM JT DPOEVDUJOH BOZ 45&.
