Beatrix’s Bee-autiful hotels By BELINDA HARRISON
WITH a name derived from the Roman ‘Viatrix’ meaning voyager, 15 year old Boweya resident Beatrix Clarke’s bee hotels are ensuring native bees don’t have to make epic journeys across space and time to find pollen without somewhere to store it. With more than 1500 species of native bees in Australia, and most foraging for pollen within 200 metres of their hive, providing habitats for them within our own backyards can only help with the important environmental role they play. “Many modern environments aren’t suited for bees anymore as we all strive for minimalistic and low maintenance gardens,” Beatrix said. “People don’t leave ‘wild’ areas in their gardens where bees can make their nests, so bee hotels mimic nature in a pretty way, although you will still need to plant beeattracting flowers, shrubs and trees.” Beatrix began making the hotels earlier this year to earn pocket money but now seeks to promote awareness about bees and all they do for us. “The hotels are for solitary native bees, rather than communal honey bees, so you won’t be able to collect honey from the hotel, but they’re still an important resource,” she said. “Native bees are just as important at pollinating our agricultural, horticultural and ornamental plants as European honey bees - simply put, if we have no bees, we will have no food and no life on earth,” she said.

Cruciate ligament injuries CRUCIATE ligament rupture is a common injury in professional athletes, but did you also know it is the leading causes of hind limb lameness in dogs? The knee joint, also called the stifle, is held together by several large ligaments including the cruciate ligaments which are important in providing joint stability. There are a few different ways that the ligament can become damaged, either suddenly through excessive twisting, of hyperextension of the joint or more slowly through degeneration of the ligament over time. Dogs may have either a complete or partial tear of the cruciate ligament and there is often concurrent injuries to the joint such as cartilage damage. Affected dogs will have a hind limb lameness and may or may not be weight bearing following the injury. Sometimes the lameness improves only to flare up again following exercise. To diagnose the condition your vet will assess the stability of the joint, attempting to get a ‘drawer sign’ which indicates that the ligament is damaged. Sometimes when they are painful, dogs will tense the muscles in this region making it very difficult to accu-
with Dr Amanda Walker, Veterinarian rately assess the joint, in such cases an anaesthetic may be required to permit a thorough examination. The treatment of cruciate injuries is dependent on the size, age and activity level of the dog. Surgery is the treatment of choice in most cases and is designed to increase joint stability. There are a range of surgical techniques available, each with their own benefits and pitfalls and selection of technique is made on a case by case basis. In the interim, cruciate injuries are managed with anti-inflammatory pain relief and rest. Some small or inactive dogs may be managed like this longer term however the damaged cruciate ligament is unable to repair itself unlike many other tissues in the body. Left untreated the instability in the joint causes an earlier onset of osteoarthritis which itself can be a debilitating condition.

◆ SHOW-OFF: A Leptospermum hybrid putting on a show in late spring.
Lovely Leptospermums LEPTOSPERMUM is a genus of shrubs and small trees in the family Myrtaceae, the same family as Eucalyptus, Callistemon (bottlebrushes) and Melaleuca. Like all Myrtaceae, they have aromatic leaves containing oil glands, usually five petals per flower and woody fruits. Leptospermums, and some Melaleuca, are commonly known as Tea Trees because early European settlers used the leaves of some species as a substitute for tea. They can be found in every state of Australia. In fact most species occur only in Australia and are concentrated in the south of our continent. Tea Trees make lovely garden plants, especially the newer varieties which have been bred for flowers which are large, colourful and long-lasting. The flowers are rich in nectar and attract small insects, bees and birds to the garden. If picked early, the flowers are beautiful in a vase. Outside of the flowering season, Tea Trees are versatile and team well with other plants. They are available in a variety of shapes and sizes, from groundcovers to tall shrubs. Many of the new varieties are less than two metres high. They provide great habitat and are suitable for hedging because they have small leaves and a dense form. Most of the breeding work for Australian Tea Trees has been done at Bywong Nursery near Canberra.
A number of colourful cultivars have been developed from hybrids of Leptospermum spectabile, Leptospermum rotundifolium and Leptospermum scoparium (commonly known as Manuka). Some cultivars are protected by Plant Breeders Rights which means they cannot be propagated commercially without approval. Home gardeners can, however, propagate plants for their own use. This would need to be by cuttings to keep the characteristics of the cultivar. The best time to do this is late autumn, after flowering has finished. Of course, a much easier way is to buy one from your local nursery. Most Leptospermums like full sun to part shade and slightly acidic soils. They are quite hardy plants. I have a couple that still put on a beautiful floral show despite relative neglect. I did mulch them and watered weekly during their first summer. Now that they are established they only get a good soak if we have a period of extended dry weather. As with many flowering shrubs, it’s a good idea to prune Tea Trees after flowering to maintain a nice shape and promote new growth. They will also benefit from an annual application of slow release native plant fertiliser.

YOUR HEALTH Barwite Vineyard 2018 Chardonnay
NOTHING beats a handmade present at Christmas time. While thoughts might initially turn to gold, silver or the type of gift normally encased in a signature baby-blue box, something a person has created with their own hands is even better. A locally made piece of art or craft doesn’t have to be expensive, it can be truly unique and there are just so many talented artisans around we are deďŹ nitely spoilt for choice. Even a framed child’s painting makes a beautiful gift that forever captures a special moment in time. Sentimentality aside, winemaking can also be very hands-on all the way from picking to purchasing, so wine deďŹ nitely makes the ideal standby present to have for unexpected guests. Barwite Vineyard’s Friday’s Child Chardonnay is made from fruit handpicked from the vineyard located in the MansďŹ eld region. The vineyard was established in 1998; designed and constructed on former grazing land originally purchased from the Friday family. The wine is a pale straw colour and has a fresh, oral aroma which hints at peach fruit and honeysuckle.

There are more stone fruits in the avour and there is also the bite of citrus, complemented by a creamy, vanilla-laced background. Enjoy just lightly chilled to better BQQSFDJBUF UIPTF EJʚ FSJOH MBZFST PG lasting avour. I like to have it with good cheese and crusty bread but it is also great with poultry, or pastas with a cream-based or buttery sauce. This Day in History, 1891 ON this day in 1891, the man who was probably the North East’s first millionaire died. At one time or another, Sydney G. Watson seemed to own just about all the best land in the Upper Murray. His list of properties are a rollcall of familiar place names today - Tintaldra, Walwa and Corryong. Watson’s property interests extended to the far north of Queensland, while his many children, fathered in the course of two, some say three, marriages, spread themselves across the countryside and overseas, many of them carrying on Watson’s adventurous instincts and a flair for the eccentric.
with Naturopaths Belinda McPherson and Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) ◆ MODERATION: Consuming large quantities of ‘super foods’ can block the conversion of thyroid hormone into its active form
Can health foods be detrimental?
WITH the increase in popularity of celebrity/mummy bloggers and picture-perfect Instagram “health coachesâ€? we have noticed an increase in a restriction of food groups with our clients. Even more of an issue is when our clients are eating what is deemed a “health/superfoodâ€? in large quantities day after day. Both styles of eating can lead to nutritional deďŹ ciencies and excesses, particularly when goitrogen foods are consumed in large quantities on a daily basis. Goitrogens are a component in foods that block the conversion of thyroid hormone into its active form. These include cruciferous and brassica family; cabbage, spinach, kale, broccoli, radish, horseradish, soy (protein powders and milks), raspberries, strawberries, tapioca/cassava (look at your “healthyâ€? chip packets) and millet to name a few. These foods are often consumed in their raw form adding to the amount of goitrogen production in the gut, resulting in
hypothyroid symptoms (fatigue, sluggish bowels, changes in hair and skin, weight changes, muscle cramps/tension). In the absence of any pathology we always recommend the KISS (keep it simple silly) model: t m MM ZPVS QMBUF XJUI NPTUMZ TBMBE BOE WFH WBSZ JU EBJMZ and weekly; t BEE BT NBOZ EJĘš FSFOU DPMPVST BT ZPV DBO UP ZPVS QMBUF and consume it with lean protein and healthy fats; and t BMXBZT TFFL OVUSJUJPOBM BEWJDF GSPN B USBJOFE QSPGFT sional like a naturopath (we have been to university to study this, we don’t make it up). If you have developed an abnormal pathology (diabetes, thyroid disease, high cholesterol etc) or you are heading that way, then make an appointment with someone who can treat you holistically, by looking at your entire body, diet and lifestyle. Sophie and Belinda are university-trained naturopaths specialising in diet and lifestyle modiďŹ cations and we are here to help you today.

Beatrix’s Bee-autiful hotels make a difference From page 1
Beatrix is a member of the Wooragee, Corowa, Warby-Range and Wangaratta Urban Landcare groups and Birdlife Australia, having recently taken part in the Aussie Backyard Bird Count and Wild Pollinator count. “There is no minimum age limit to join the Landcare groups and I continue to be involved in them because I enjoy bird walks, counts and surveys and it helps me to layer up my knowledge and learn from others who have a wealth of information to share, she said. “They open a whole new way to learn and you can participate in different projects, workshops and walks. Taking over half the dining room table in winter to create her hotels, Beatrix collects materials such as curly hollow bark from beneath gum trees, drilled out dry native wood, pithy stems - her favourites being reed or canola stems - and bamboo cane recycled from tree-line plantings, with
people often donating the invasive cane from their own gardens. “The hotels are speciďŹ cally for Australian native bees, but spiders, wasps and ants all like exploring and living in them too, pinecones especially create good crevices for little creatures,â€? she said. “It’s extremely satisfying making the bee hotels and I like to encourage other people to make and use them as well because it’s so good for the environment.â€? With the holidays coming up and parents and grandparents always looking for ways to keep the children entertained, Beatrix offers instruction and tips on how make the perfect bee hotel: “You can use an old baked bean or Milo tin with one or both ends cut out, packed tightly with a selection of different stems of the same length,â€? she said. “A wooden box ďŹ lled with a variety of materials like bamboo stems, twigs,
leaves, pinecones and clay or cement breezeblocks and bricks with holes will also work well. “Bee hotels made from natural materials will be the most popular. MATERIALS TO COLLECT: t 3FE HVN HSFZ CPY PS JSPO CBSL hardwood or any untreated blocks of wood. t -FOHUIT PG CBNCPP XJUI POF FOE sealed with either clay or mud so the bees feel safe to lay their eggs. t #VJMEFST PS FBSUIFO DMBZ t $MBZ QBDLFE QJQFT #MVF CBOEFE bees like these best). t "OZ TUFNT UIBU BSF QJUIZ TPGU stemmed or hollow; fennel stems, lantana, grapevines or hydrangeas work best. GONE FISHING
TECH & SCIENCE
◆ A HANDFUL: Spencer Jones with a lovely Murray cod caught in Wangaratta on Sunday morning. Spencer caught this ripper on a Native Lures spinnerbait.
Cod’s the word RIGHT across the region the Murray cod are on the chew and many anglers are targeting them. There has been some hot and cold cod fishing across North East Victoria over the last week, but on the whole the fishing has been great. I have had reports of cod being caught just about everywhere. I fished the King River in Wangaratta on Thursday afternoon with two mates and we never had a touch. The following night I went out with Jake Hamilton to the same river but up near Oxley and the fishing was off its head…well it was for Jake anyway! He caught two trout cod and lost two more while I just lost two. Jake did make me very jealous. Not with his beautiful fish, but with his energy. It’s not until you fish with a 15 year old that you realise just how old and unfit you are. Jake caught his first ever cod on a surface lure, a magnificent 65cm trout cod caught on a Damiki Air Frog. I will share Jakes photo in next
with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ WATCH OUT: Poison dart frogs are among the most lethal animals in the world. For centuries, the original inhabitants of Colombia used the potent poison of these amphibians to tip their hunting arrows or darts.
Dissecting the facts about frogs with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA week’s column. On the weekend my mate Rohan Jenner and I camped up in the Buckland Valley. With a cool night and green grass, it was truly beautiful up there. Between us we managed about 10 or so trout, nothing big the biggest being around 30cm. All of the trout were rainbow trout except for one brown. We caught the trout on a variety of lures however it was small diving minnows that worked the best for us. We saw a lot of small trout in the streams up there which is fantastic. We only saw one snake, a lovely tiger snake. The FISH:SNAKE ratio was in our favour.
FROGS are amphibians that are known for their jumping abilities, croaking sounds, bulging eyes and slimy skin. They live all over the world and are among the most diverse animals in the world, with more than 6000 species. Frogs vs. toads There is no scientific distinction between frogs and toads. Frogs and toads both belong to the Anura order, but are found in different families. ‘True toads’ make up the Bufonidae family, which includes 580 species. Frogs and toads do have specific traits that define them, however. For example, frogs are mostly aquatic; most toads live on land (but near water). Frogs have teeth; toads do not. Toads of both sexes have a rudimentary ovary called a bidder’s organ. Frogs are also typically longer than toads. Also, frogs have smooth, slimy skin; toads have dry, bumpy skin. The bumps, however, are not warts, and a person cannot get warts from handling a toad, contrary to myths and fairy tales. However, toads have glands behind their eyes that can secrete a burning milky toxin. Other interesting facts about frogs. 1. One gram of the toxin produced by the skin of the golden poison dart frog could kill 100,000 people.
2. The female Surinam toad lays up to 100 eggs, which are then distributed over her back. Her skin swells around the eggs until they become embedded in a honeycomblike structure. After 12 to 20 weeks, fully formed young toads emerge by pushing out through the membrane covering the toad’s back. 3. A frog completely sheds its skin about once a week. After it pulls off the old, dead skin, the frog usually eats it. 4. When Darwin’s frog tadpoles hatch, a male frog swallows the tadpoles. He keeps the tiny amphibians in his vocal sac for about 60 days to allow them to grow. He then proceeds to cough up tiny, fully formed frogs. 5. When a frog swallows its prey, it blinks, which pushes its eyeballs down on top of the mouth to help push the food down its throat. 6. The wood frog of North America actually freezes in the winter and is reanimated in the spring. When temperatures fall, the wood frog’s body begins to shut down, and its breathing, heartbeat and muscle movements stop. The water in the frog’s cells freezes and is replaced with glucose and urea to keep cells from collapsing. When there’s a thaw, the frog’s warms up, its body functions resume and it hops off like nothing ever happened. 7. A group of birds is called a flock, a group of cattle is called a herd, but a group of frogs is called an army. 8. The glass frog has translucent skin, so you can see its internal organs, bones and muscles through its skin. You can even observe its heart beating and its stomach digesting food.
