IT was 6pm on February 7, 2009 when the first fire started in what would become known as the Beechworth-Mudgegonga fire during the Black Saturday Royal Commission. A tree had fallen on a power line on Buckland Gap Road, Beechworth and ignited the vegetation at the base of the pole. Crews were immediately dispatched but their initial attacks to contain the blaze were unsuccessful due to the location and weather conditions and by 7.10pm warnings were issued for direct ember attacks in the communities of Stanley, Barwidgee Creek and Mudgegonga. Urgent threat messages continued to be issued with a south-westerly change expected to reach the fire ground between 11pm and midnight but with electricity and communications cut off in many areas, getting the message out had to be done by local crews. Firefighting resources were gathered from a number of local Victorian and NSW areas and included 133 CFA and 97 Networked Emergency Organisation (NEO) personnel, 23 CFA appliances, 89 NEO appliances and two aircraft. The firestorm burned fiercely and without care for what stood in its path until just before 4am on Saturday morning when the wind eased and weather conditions settled. But by then the damage had been done. Thirty-eight houses and sheds had been destroyed or damaged and farming equipment and stock lost. But a more devastating and tragic discovery was to be made that Saturday morning when the bodies of locals John and Sue Wilson were found at their property - the fire front having razed their home around midnight on Friday. By the time the fire was finally contained on February 16, it had burnt through 33,577 hectares - 23,500 of that State Park but it took until April 27 to be declared safe. For born and bred Mudgegonga resident Loretta Carroll, who farms beef cattle and sheep on her property, the 2009 Beechworth-Mudgegonga fire hit extremely close to home, with almost 80 percent of her property affected when she lost a hay shed, all her fodder and 47 of her cows.

Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) BRACHYCEPHALIC Obstructive Airway Syndrome is a respiratory problem occurring in most brachycephalic breeds. Brachycephalic refers to those dogs with a broad, short skull, for example: Pug, Bulldog, Boston Terrier, King Charles Cavalier Spaniel. Brachycephalic dogs have been bred to have short muzzles and noses, and therefore have several anatomical abnormalities which reduce the dog’s ability to take in air. These abnormalities include: t /BSSPXFE OPTUSJMT OBSSPX TMJU like nostrils limits the dog’s ability to obtain enough oxygen in one breath; t &MPOHBUFE TPGU QBMBUF UIF TPGU palate is a ap of tissue which separates the nasal passages from the oral cavity. In brachycephalic dogs this is often long and hangs down over the opening to the airways; t &WFSUFE MBSZOHFBM TBDDVMFT TBD cules are two small pockets which sit either side of the opening to the air-

with Ellie Merritt, Warby Street Veterinary way, when there is increased effort in breathing, these turn inside out and obstruct the airways; and t 5SBDIFBM IZQPQMBTJB UIF USBDIFB or windpipe is too small, creating further difficulty in breathing. Signs of BOAS are usually evident by 12 months of age and progress as the dog ages. Signs to watch for include open mouth breathing, laboured breathing, respiratory noise, sleep apnoea and collapse. BOAS signiďŹ cantly affects animal welfare. These dogs often have little to no activity because they are completely occupied with breathing. Speak to your veterinarian today about how to make your brachycephalic dog more comfortable.

â—† KEEPING COOL: During some recent 43 degree heat, this visitor found a welcome drink in our garden.

All creatures great and small THE massive tragedy of the recent ďŹ res has underlined the essential nature of water: the most precious resource for all living creatures. Meanwhile, summer and the attendant drought rolls on. Media focus has highlighted how Australia’s unique and diverse wildlife has been impacted. In the wildďŹ res, immeasurable numbers of birds, animals, insects and vegetation have been ravaged. Despite the best efforts of compassionate people with funding and expert assistance, we fear that some species are facing an uncertain future. This is the big picture. Those of us who love growing and living things can do small things to alleviate a dire future scenario. There are many wild creatures,

N E W P U R P O S E D E S I G N E D FA C I L I T Y – O W N E D A N D O P E R AT E D B Y E S TA B L I S H E D LO C A L D E N T I S T S

from the tiniest ant to the largest old man kangaroo - shy creatures that most of us may rarely see or hear - to which you can give care and sustenance. Whether you consider yourself a bona ďŹ de gardener or not, whether your garden is pocket-handkerchief size or acreage, you can provide essentials: water, food and shelter, for a diversity of creatures with which we share our earth. Resist the temptation to ‘tidy up’ every nook. Maintain a casual area designed speciďŹ cally for all creatures great and small. Dishes of water of varying depths, with overhanging protection, will be well-used. You could recycle an old frying

pan, add a few small rocks, set it in a sheltered area, and ďŹ ll with water. You may be surprised by the variety of furred and feathered visitors to this little oasis. Plant prickly shrubs such as Grevillea simplex (Banana Custard). This drought-hardy plant bears profuse white owers dripping with nectar - a tasty snack for honeyeaters. The prickly foliage discourages predation by cats and foxes. Plant Australian grasses. Cymbopogon ambiguus (Australian Lemon Grass) is attractive to seedeaters such as ďŹ nches. The adage ‘from little things, big things grow’ is a reminder that we each can care for our earth and all living things. Search the web for Gardens for Wildlife to learn more.

Wood Park Wines Wild’s Gully Tempranillo

ACROSS the North East there are people and places that have a strong connection to the gold rush days and the bushrangers who called the region home. While there are very wellknown places where the most familiar names and stories can be explored, the tales I have most enjoyed have come from real people in homely places about their own family’s experience of the times. There was the elderly Glenrowan man who still owned a school bench where the young Kelly children once sat, passed down through generations, and a dilapidated house in the King Valley with a rail out the front where one of the most notorious of all once tied his horse up for the night. The name of Wood Park Wines Wild’s Gully range comes from Wild Wright; a bushranger who once copped a bare-knuckle beating from Ned Kelly and whose hideout is behind Wood Park’s vineyard. They reckon their Tempranillo would have thrown the likes of Wild for a loop and that might just be true if he’d have got his hands on it. This Tempranillo has a purple red colour and zings with a

with Naturopath Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) spicy, savoury aroma - a little like wild ripe berries. It has an earthy taste; immediately savoury but then after a little time, more fruity, with hints of cherry and raspberry and maybe with a touch of leather or tobacco. It’s an ideal table wine to enjoy with pizza or pasta, or perhaps with barbecue meats like beef, snags or a hunk of roo. Were it available at the time, Wild Wright might have chosen to stick around there a lot longer.

This Day in History, 1855 WANGARATTA at last had a bridge across the Ovens. A most spectacular structure it was - built, it was said, to a Canadian design, which spanned the stream in a single arch, and constructed by gangs of men using American axes for the first time in the colony. Streams of goldfield traffic deserted Ovens Street and the punt across the Ovens, and Murphy Street became the new main thoroughfare.

◆ MORE THAN THE SUM: Herbal medicines combined with naturopathic care can provide people with more than just clinical effects - they can provide warmth and compassion as well.

The powerful effects of botanical medicines in emotional health MOST of the research around herbal medicine is based on the philological actions of plants, things that can be measured and reproduced using scientific rigour. However, as naturopaths we know that plant medicines are more than a sum of their parts - they work much deeper and more holistically than science gives them credit for. This is why I love working with people and plants. Because the combination of person-centred care, a room full of empathy and compassion, a prescription of carefully chosen plant medicines and a hug can really make a difference. Some quotes from famous herbalists on the uses of plant medicine for emotional aspects of health, and some of the ways we use herbal medicine with our patients through stress, anxiety, emotional upheaval and grief: Need a hug? “Rose is a hug in a bottle”. Rose petals are used in herbal medicine to help with processing grief. Drunk in a tea such as our “sleep and dream blend” to promote sleep, added to a bath such as our “relax bath salts”

and absorbed via the skin. “I give lime flowers to people who need cuddles.” All babies need cuddles to help them sleep and this is why we have lime flowers in our children’s sleep bath salts and use it in our children’s fever blends. Are you a worrier? Someone who can’t switch off ? Three remedies are often prescribed for anxiety and conditions that lead to tension and insomnia: Skullcap is for people with mice in the brain; so tired, but they can’t fall asleep because the mice are running around in their brains keeping them awake. Skullcap stops you worrying about the things that aren’t worth worrying about. Valerian stops you worrying about anything at all. Chamomile is for those who are bothered by almost everything. Has pain (tooth, headache or fever) made you clingy, fretful, restless and anxious? Chamomile is for babies of all ages. If they’re red and hot and babyish they’ll benefit from it. Think lavender when the head or neck pain shoots upwards, and chamomile when the pain is dull and insidious.

“I live about two kilometres from where John and Sue Wilson lived and their deaths certainly hit us all hard...it was devastating,â€? Loretta said. In the aftermath of the tragedy, and putting aside her own losses, Loretta shone, with her property becoming a hay depot and she organised the distribution of the hay to those who lost all of their feed; she also worked with the CFA and her neighbours to rebuild their lives. Loretta was approached by the Victorian BushďŹ re Appeal Fund (VBAF) to represent the area by sitting on the Community Advisory Committee of VBAF as the sole representative for those affected by the Beechworth-Mudgegonga ďŹ re. The role of the committee was to decide, along with rep-

resentatives from other ďŹ re-affected areas across the state, how to allocate the $16 million interest earned on the donations made to the ďŹ re appeal. “We worked together on the issues facing the ďŹ re-affected areas and the VBAF arranged a forum in Myrtleford to give people an opportunity to consider our long-term priorities and needs,â€? she said. “Local community members and representatives from the Alpine and Indigo shire councils attended the forum and it was decided that a community foundation was an appropriate tool to roll-out the long-term needs of the communities affected by the ďŹ res and allow our communities to take charge of and manage our projects.â€? “I had been involved in seeking ďŹ nancial support and com-

munity grants and I found that what was available was often restrictive and outside the needs of our particular community. “Setting up the foundation gave our communities more say and control of where the funds went and how they were used...it encouraged local people to play a pivotal role in long-term planning. “It was also a way to bring everyone together and make opportunities available to direct the funds where they were wanted. The initiative was supported and Loretta became the founding chair of Into Our Hands - an organisation which raises money and invests and funds initiatives for local communities. Early days saw the foundation funding water points for emergencies, establishing a UHF community radio network,

undertaking community ďŹ re planning and landscape development which included planting deciduous ďŹ re-resistant trees. In 2018/19, $127,000 was given towards local projects including lighting at the Dederang Recreation Reserve, upgrades at the Piazza church hall in Myrtleford, and a business case for community offgrid power project for Totally Renewal Yackandandah - a project which has now moved into the next phase and become the ďŹ rst communityowned energy company and project in Australia. For her work after the ďŹ res with the CFA and the establishment of the Into Our Hands foundation, Loretta received the National Emergency Medal and was also a ďŹ nalist in the Bluescope Leadership Innovation Award.

â—† HAND-OVER: Ruth Kneebone (left) is taking over as chair of the Into Our Hands foundation from Loretta Carroll.

Last month, after seven years at the helm, Loretta felt it was time to hand over the reins and has retired from her position of chair, passing the mantle to Ruth Kneebone. Loretta will continue to be on the board and take a keen

interest in the foundation and remains closely linked with her local community through her involvement with the local Landcare group, Cattle Producers Australia board and the Ovens Valley branch of the VFF.

GONE FISHING

nemedia.com.au

TECH & SCIENCE

with Chris Febvre ◆ NICE CATCH: Brett Corker has caught a few Murray cod around Wangaratta over the last week but has had to work quite hard for them.

NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ OH NO: White heat stains on a varnished table are notoriously difficult to get rid of. Fortunately, science ca n come to the rescue. Place a white towel down on the table, and run your iron over the towel, applying a bit of steam as you do, and voila.

Rain may aid fishing Science hacks for your household FINALLY we are seeing some decent rainfall in the weather forecast. As of writing this report on Monday morning this week, we have had some rain, with the ‘promise’ of more in coming days which could have some very positive effects on the fishing in the region. Over the last week I have made numerous trips to Lake William Hovell where I have found plenty of small redfin willing to take a lure. I’ve caught fish on a variety of different lures however it has been the small minnow lures that have caught the most fish. Last Thursday I went to Lake Buffalo to try and find some larger redfin. I did not catch a single redfin, however I did manage to catch a very fat Murray cod of around 50cm. I trolled the cod on a tiny little 38mm diving minnow while targeting redfin. Gerry Dent and I bait fished

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA in the lower Ovens River last Tuesday night. All we managed were two turtles and one small cod which were all released. The Ovens River is fishing quite slowly at the moment. In saying that, I did get one good report from Lindsay McKenna of three cod being caught on a solo camping trip to Gravel Point on Saturday night and Sunday morning. I have had a number of very good reports of Murray cod being caught in the Broken River downstream of Benalla as well with most cod being caught on lures - the most popular type being surface lures.

IT’S common to think of science as answering the big questions. Questions about life, the universe and everything. And while those questions are certainly important, when it comes to our day to day lives it’s good to know science has got our backs. This week I thought we’d take a look at some everyday household tasks and how science can be employed for fantastic results. Make your own whitening paste Got some bicarbonate of soda and peppermint oil? Then you can make your own whitening toothpaste. Simply mix together bicarbonate soda, water and 1-2 drops of peppermint oil; the bicarb works as a natural abrasive to scrub off stains. Remember though that you need fluoride to prevent cavities, so don’t forget to use fluoride-heavy toothpaste too. Stop your shoes smelling Rely on your trusty bicarbonate soda again for this trick to stop shoes from smelling. Leave some in the offending shoes overnight, tip out in the morning and you’ll have fresher smelling shoes -

the alkaline bicarbonate of soda will help neutralise acidic odours. Make your own kitchen cleaning spray Sticky kitchen surfaces getting you down? Try shaking up water, white vinegar and tea tree oil to make a DIY cleaning spray. Tip it into an old spray bottle and you’re good to go. White vinegar is made of diluted acetic acid, which will help wipe away stains and even kill some germs, while the tea tree oil will leave your kitchen smelling clean and fresh. Make your own shoe polish Grab some olive oil and lemon for a simple stand in to shoe polish. Dab the mixture on your shoes and buff away for a perfect polish. Oils are used to keep leather soft and supple, and this mix will add some shine to keep you looking your best. Clean your shower head the natural way Descaling your shower head can seem like a big effort, but there’s an easy way you can do it with some simple ingredients. Pour some vinegar into a sandwich

bag and attach it to your shower head with a rubber hand, making sure it’s submerged into the vinegar. Leave it to soak overnight and it’ll be clearer. Limescale is made of minerals that precipitate out of hard water, eventually building up around your showerhead and clogging the nozzle, but it’ll dissolve away when exposed to an acid like vinegar. Get rid of white heat marks on wooden surfaces Did your hot dish or coffee mug leave a nasty white stain on your table? You might have tried everything under the sun to get rid of stains like this to no avail. I’ve seen people suggesting toothpaste, bicarb, vaseline and oil, but if the stain is bad enough, none of that will do anything to it. Instead, place a white towel over your table, plug in your iron, and then start ironing the towel directly on the table surface. Press the steam button a few times, then rub the iron over the affected area for a few seconds (not too long), and finally lift the towel and witness the amazing vanishing stain.
