ELI Hack’s effervescent smile and unrelenting energy mask the fact the Wangaratta toddler, who turns two this week, has already had two open heart surgeries. He was born with a serious heart condition. A routine 18 week pregnancy ultrasound scan revealed his tiny heart had one central trunk instead of the usual two major arteries, and he had a large hole between the chambers of his heart and was missing his pulmonary heart valve. While Eli defied his diagnosis by entering the world as a “pink and screaming eight pound baby”, his mother Lisa Dekeling said his early months were an anxious time. Before having open heart surgery at three months old, Eli was allowed home to get bigger and stronger, and Lisa, husband Shane Hack, and the entire family was on tenterhooks. “It was a very anxious time as we had to be on the constant lookout for signs of heart failure,” she said. “A respiratory illness could have had a devastating effect on him, and dehydration through gastro was equally as dangerous. “To add to the anxiety, we had three older children attending three different schools, it was winter, and the chances of picking up an illness were great.” But two surgeries later, Eli now thrives. continued page |

Winter blues and a case of the ‘can’t be bothereds’

DOONA DAY: The “winter blues” can be hard to shake.

walk in the sun will do the trick. 2. Hydrate: blocked glands, headaches and fatigue can all be cured with water. So make yourself accountable to drinking 1.5L a day. 3. Exercise plan: Movement improves circulation to the hands, feet and brain, warms you up and puts a smile on your face. Yoga, walk, anything you like.

4. Transition into productive indoor time: use the increased indoor time to wind down, read a book, start a project and declutter. 5. Herbal medicines: there are some great herbal medicines to boost immunity, improve recovery and resistance to winter bugs as well as to boost your energy and mood.

WINTER is a great time in the veggie garden, with an abundance of crops that can be grown and harvested. Many of the hearty vegetables grow best in the cooler months; some even taste better after a couple of frosts and nothing tastes better than freshly harvested home grown veggies. It is easier to grow vegetables during the cooler winter months when it is not so hot and dry, and there are fewer problems with pests and diseases. Most veggies can be grown from seedlings or from seed. Seedlings have established root systems and reach maturity quicker than plants grown from seed. Seedlings usually come in punnets of 6-10 plants or can be bought individually as more advanced plants for a quicker harvest. They are also ideal for small or container gardens. Growing from seed is cheaper and produces lots more plants with a wider variety of plants, including heirloom varieties. Some vegetables, however, like carrot and parsnip, are more suited to growing from seed as they don’t successfully transplant very well. Seed tape is the easiest way of sowing seed. The seed tape is made from paper, impregnated with seeds which make handling and sowing seeds so much simpler.

The tape is rolled out to the required length, cut and then covered with a fine layer of soil. Seed tape varieties to sow now include lettuce, radish, spring onion, carrot and beetroot. Other seeds to sow are sugar snap peas, beans, parsnips and broad beans. Try growing seedlings of cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, broccolini, lettuce, spinach, silverbeet, brown and red onions. Vegetables like asparagus and rhubarb are perennial plants and need a permanent spot in the garden where they can grow happily undisturbed for many years. Make sure the veggie garden gets at least five to six hours sunlight and the soil is well drained. Follow the direction on the labels and mulch to protect the root zone from the cold. Feed the plants with a liquid fertiliser once a fortnight and cover with frost cover when there is a chance of frost. If you have never grown veggies before, give it a go. Happy gardening.

THE winter blues normally hit around July. It’s that cold, tired, dragging your feet around kind of feeling. It’s where you realise your exercise plan consists of walking to the kettle then back to the blanket on the couch, you have eaten pita pizza three nights in a row and the “floordrobe” - clothes on the floor because you can’t be bothered putting them away – has taken over the bedroom. For most the winter blues hit after a cold, you get sick and then three weeks later realise that you are still tired, headachy, moody and struggling to get out of bed. Most of us experience a mild drop in mood and feeling like we can’t be bothered (CBB) at this time of year, but for some the depression symptoms are severe. Naturopaths’ top five tips to reduce the CBBs and winter blues: 1. Take a mini break: preferably a week to somewhere sunny – to recharge and get a vitamin D hit. If time poor, a weekend away or even a lunchtime brisk

VETS CORNER

“Eli is now heart normal and medication free, just like any child his age and has a normal life expectancy,” Lisa said. Eli’s parents are determined to give back to other parents in the same situation, through national organisation HeartKids. They recently re-established the local HeartKids support group and said they had been in contact with several local parents whose children have experienced heart problems. The couple said they would have been lost during those worrying early months without the invaluable advice offered by HeartKids, especially as they had to spend extended periods of time in Melbourne with little time to organise themselves. “It’s helpful for everyone to talk about experiences to someone else who understands,” said Lisa. Wangaratta parent Karyn Howard certainly does. Her beautiful, thriving 12 year old daughter Juliette went through extensive heart treatment when she was younger. Juliette was born with Pierre Robin syndrome, with symptoms including a coarc of the aorta (narrow aorta) and a hole in the heart. From when she was just days old, Juliette went through many different surgeries, including heart surgery at three months and a major heart operation when she was six years old. Karyn said that now, Juliette is an energetic year seven student, whose favorite activities include playing netball and dancing. “She still gets puffed, but she gives everything a go,” Karyn said, adding that through it all, Heartkids has been a great support to her family, and to Juliette with many activities and events. “It makes Juliette feel very special,” she said. For more information on HeartKids call (03) 93290446, email Lisa Dekeling at lisadekeling@optusnet.com.au or see the HeartKids Victoria/Tasmania Facebook page or the website at www.heartkidsvic.org.au.

Veterinary volunteers THERE are many programs around the world where veterinarians and veterinary nurses volunteer to improve the health of the local animal population. These programs exist in Australia and abroad and generally operate in regions where there is no veterinary care or the population is unable to afford veterinary care. An additional aim of these programs is to train local people in the care of animals and also to try to change people’s attitudes towards the care and ownership of animals. Many veterinarians and veterinary nurses from practices in North East Victoria have been involved in volunteer work over the years. One such organisation is Vets Beyond Borders, which operates programs in various regions of India. The programs centre around population control and rabies vaccination. In these areas dogs are not “owned” in the same way as they are in Australia. They tend to roam in a fashion where we would consider them as stray animals. Without desexing the size of these populations can quickly get out of control. In addition to this India is a region affected by the rabies virus, a severe virus that affects the nervous system and can be spread to humans through bites from infected dogs. A team effort between local people and international vets and vet nurses helps to catch the roaming dogs and spay or castrate them.

PETS CORNER THEN AND NOW: Juliette Howard, who had a heart operation when she was six days old, has grown into a happy and active 12 year old.

The animals are then vaccinated against the rabies virus to help control this lethal disease, and thereby improve animal and human welfare in the region. The final step in the program is to try to encourage people in the community to more truly “own” an animal by feeding them regularly and watching out for their welfare. Vets Beyond Borders is just one of many worthy charities that see vets and vet nurses try to improve the health of animals in disadvantaged situations. Their continued operation relies on the volunteering of time by these professionals and also the support of charity donors. BOOK

A Delicate Truth by John le Carre A COUNTER-terrorist operation, code-named Wildlife, is mounted on the British crown colony of Gibraltar in order to capture and abduct a high-value jihadist arms buyer. Three years later, a disgraced Special Forces soldier delivers a message from the dead. Was Operation Wildlife the success it was cracked up to be - or a human tragedy that was ruthlessly covered up? Published by Penguin Books Australia

Back to nature WHEN I was growing up, I used and trusted the products my mother used and trusted. If Mum (a trained nurse and therefore, by my calculations, totally cognisant of the effectiveness and safety of such products) thought something was okay, then I would also think it was okay. Thus I used the tried and true baby powder and the popular brands of shampoo and soaps. Like many of my ilk, I based my choice of deodorant on whichever brand had the grooviest TV advert. In particular I liked the one that featured pretty girls and handsome bronzed boys all heading off by boat for a party down the river. And as far as soap was concerned, I was certainly on the ‘Don’t wait to be told’ bandwagon. When I needed a moisturiser, I chose the one my mum – she of the beautiful, soft skin – had always used and continued to use it throughout most of my adult life. Maybe, however, my Mum exposed her skin to the sun a lot less than me or maybe over time, the product lost some of its effectiveness. I can’t be sure which, but I found somewhere in my forties I needed a little more oomph. That’s when I started trialling some of the new (purportedly) ‘age defying’ products that promised to plump your saggy skin and give you a dewy youthful glow once more. Of course, as time went by, these supposed wonder creams, too, seemed not to work and I started wanting more and more from my facial products. To many of my generation, if a product could boast a list of chemicals longer than your arm, it was deemed the absolute best thing available. We (or at least, I) thought scientific jargon equalled ‘better’, and voraciously supported the chemical beauty industry.

BY CATHERINE WARNOCK I did baulk at Dr LeWinn and his more expensive counterparts – mainly because I’m still my Scottish father’s daughter and hate paying over the odds. But nevertheless, I always secretly worried that my Dr LeWinn-ed friends would fare better than me, come old age. Now that the data’s coming in (we are all the wrong side of 50) it’s becoming clear that the various states of our skins has probably a lot less to do with the good doctor and his test tubing buddies and more to do with other factors such as lifestyle, exercise, and food and drink choices. And so it is that I’m turning my back on the chemicals and finding myself hunting down hair and beauty products that are natural – or at least way more natural than the ones with the 78 ingredients I can’t even pronounce. My epiphany came during a conversation with a young mother who mentioned she uses nothing but olive oil and cornflour on her baby. Although at first I thought she must be intending to cook the kid, I was fascinated. As she spoke about her wish to only use natural products on her child I immediately harked back to my own early mothering experience and tried to mentally calculate the millions of chemicals I had inadvertently exposed my own offspring to over the years. I had to stop counting when I got to about gazillion and returned my attention to the points she was making. “What do you use on your own skin?” I asked. “Well, my rule of thumb is, if I wouldn’t put it in my mouth, I won’t put it on my skin either.” Wow! That was such a simple and sensible idea that I wondered why I hadn’t thought of it myself – like, ever. Of course, I blame my mum. If she wasn’t such a beautiful advert for the products of her time (or despite them) I wouldn’t be in such a wrinkly pickle.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

Famous author in town, 1872 THE English novelist Anthony Trollope paid a visit to Beechworth on this day in 1872. He left the following day.

MY mum taught me how to make these biscuits, using a recipe that has been in the family (on my dad’s side) for more than five generations. They are of Austrian descent, and after researching my father’s birth certificate a few years back and found he was actually from German descendants, I now know why his family had this recipe. The biscuits are very firm when they’re first cooked and need to spend between 2 and 4 weeks in the sugar mix to soften before they’ll melt in your mouth. I stress the importance of not eating them until they’re completely ready, as they will “shatter in your mouth and spoil the exquisite experience”. So these Kipfel, in other words, are the real McCoy. Method In an electric mixer or food processor, cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add the flour slowly, then the ground walnuts, vanilla and salt. Beat mixture until it is firm or a ball forms. Wrap the dough in cling film and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Divide into four pieces and roll each quarter into a log about 2cm thick, wrap

each log again and refrigerate for another 30 minutes. Sift the icing and vanilla sugars together. Place half in a large container, spreading out evenly, set aside the remaining half. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees. Cut the logs into pieces 2cm thick, then, using your hands, roll each piece until it is 5cm long, and bend it to make a crescent shape. Place about 2cm apart on trays lined with baking paper, then refrigerate for 15 minutes. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until lightly brown. Leave to cool on the trays for 15 minutes, then gently lift each one with a metal spatula, put in the sugar mix container and turn to coat well. Continue with the remaining biscuits. Top with the remaining sugar mixture, ensuring all biscuits are covered. Tightly seal container and leave for at least 2-4 weeks. Enjoy!

IT seems to have been a pretty ordinary season this year for mushrooms, at least for the wild ones we normally have in abundance around our pine trees at this time of year. It must have been too dry through the autumn for the little orange wonders, which twist up in a miraculous kind of way from under the thick piles of brown needles. There aren’t even many of the big brown slippery jacks we normally harvest from the thick grass at the shady edge of the paddock. The smell of them cooking used to be too strong for me when I was a kid, but now I kind of miss the way Nanna fried them up with bacon, onion and a good slog of cream. I recently had them done in a very similar way, and served over buttery gnocchi. With a bottle of chardonnay from The Homestead Estate in the Happy Valley at Rosewhite, they were top tucker, the wine’s peach fruitiness and

MONEY MATTERS

Wage rises and the economy Review insurance as winter sets in

By KEN CLARKE, WANGARATTA CERTIFIED PRACTICING ACCOUNTANT kclarke@alphalink.com.au

I READ with interest the decision PG UIF 'BJS 8PSL $PNNJTTJPO BOE UIF reasons for an increase in the minimum wage of 2.6 per cent for those 1.6 million Australians covered by either awards or the national minimum wage. 'PS UIF MPXFTU QBJE o SFUBJM DMFBOJOH and hospitality workers – this will equate to a wage rise of $15.80 per week, or 41 cents an hour. On July 1 the nation’s minimum wage will increase from $606 to $622 a week which is about $32,000 a year. Not a great wage for families to survive on, but then they have been used to things being taken away before. In outlining the reasons for the pay SJTF 'BJS 8PSL $PNNJTTJPO QSFTJEFOU Iain Ross issued a warning about Australia’s social cohesion. He said the gap between the haves and the have-nots was widening in respect of pay for work performed. While some minimum wage rates had increased in real terms over the past decade, they had not kept pace with wage increases generally. He also said “modern award minimum wages have fallen over the past decade and earnings inequality is increasing ‌ these trends may have broader implications both for our economy and for the maintenance of social cohesion in Australiaâ€?. Peter Anderson, chief of the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the pay rise was excessive, and exceeded the inflation rate.

MONEY TO SPEND: The minimum wage will deliver an extra $15.80 a week to over 1.6 million Australians, helping to put food on the table, and pay rising bills.

The group had wanted a weekly pay rise limited to $5.80. He said the commission had ignored “businesses who are not in the fast lane of the economy. The ACTU had asked for a rise in the order of $30 a week and secretary Dave 0MJWFS TBJE 'BJS 8PSL T EFDJTJPO XPVME see the nation’s poorest workers fall further behind. “We are extremely concerned we could end up with a USA-style working poor in this country if this trend continues, he said. The Australian Industry Group said the $15.80 a week wage rise would see some employers not giving extra hours to employees as they would not be able to afford it. It must be some comfort to employees that compulsory superannuation is on the rise from July 1 with an extra quarter of a per cent being added to the amount the employer has to contribute and there will be further increases until the figure

reaches 12 per cent in July 2019. I still believe that the government should have looked at some compulsory contribution from the employee and wages were increased to accommodate it, as we keep hearing about how the next generation will have to support themselves as the government will not have the money to provide pensions. But this will mean a change to their living standards as they age. Here in the North East we are a little bit protected with the ability to be able to obtain a rental property of three bedrooms in the low $200’s a week and quite a few houses are sold around the $250,000 price bracket. It is much cheaper to attend a football match and the majority of children live close enough to their schools to be able to walk or ride to school. Most of our towns have aquatic centres and indoor stadiums which cater for a variety of sports. And don’t forget our great weather.

AS temperatures fall across the country the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) is urging householders to check their insurance policies are up to date and take steps to ensure their homes are well protected against heightened fire risks. ICA CEO Rob Whelan says reviewing insurance policies is an important part of the preparation households should take this time of year as the colder winter weather kicks in. “People will spend more time in doors to escape the cold, and it’s also when fireplaces, heaters, appliances and other electrical equipment are in greatest use, Mr Whelan said. “It is important to make sure your assets are properly insured this winter. “Checking insurance is up to date and has not lapsed can minimise the risk of devastating financial consequences if your home is damaged or destroyed by fire or extreme weather. “Standard home insurance provides cover against domestic fires, but policyholders should have a clear understanding of what coverage they have, as well as any exclusions that may be part of their insurance policy. Mr Whelan said most Australians do not have enough savings to rebuild a fire-damaged home or pay off a mortgage should they suffer a severe financial loss. Many also underestimate the cost of rebuilding their homes and

replacing their assets. “Insurance can’t stop a fire damaging your home, but it can help you recover financially. “It’s a good idea to sit down and take some time to work out the value of your home and contents. “You may be surprised at how quickly things can add up, Mr Whelan said.
