Stan on patrol By KYLIE WILSON FOR almost 40 years, Peter “Stan” Cantwell has played an integral role in the safety of Falls Creek residents and visitors alike as a member of the Falls Creek Ski Patrol. It’s a job that he wouldn’t swap for the world. “I love the mountains,” he said. “I’ve never really lost that love of being in the mountains and the great outdoors.” Stan first came to Falls Creek in 1977 as a fresh faced 18 year old, spending his first years on mountain working for the Falls Creek Ski Lift Company. His nickname of Stan, which most people on the mountain know him by, came about when he and his early workmates shared bunk rooms - particularly one year, when everyone in his room was named Peter - and all gave each other pseudoyms which happened to stick. He laughed that while he was named Stan, another workmate ended up with the nickname Ian Cognito. By 1981, he had begun working part time for the Falls Creek Ski Patrol, progressing his way up to a full time role from there. He said that plenty has changed in the realm of ski rescue since then, with one of the key innovations being ski lifts changing from T-bar style to chairlifts, increasing safety for the average resort goer.

Hyperthyroidism HYPERTHYROIDISM is one of the most common medical conditions that affects elderly cats. The thyroid is a gland in the neck that produces hormones to control the body. One of its major functions is controlling the body’s metabolism. Cats develop the condition called hyperthyroidism meaning that the thyroid gland becomes enlarged and produced to much of the thyroid hormone known as thyroxine. As the gland starts producing more thyroxine the cat’s metabolism speeds up leading to signs including ravenous appetite yet will lose weight and become very bony. They can also become much more active, extra grumpy and sometimes aggressive due to high metabolism. Sometimes cats may start to look scruffy and unkempt and get a gaunt look. These signs generally occur in cats greater than eight years old. Diagnosis is relatively straight forward for hyperthyroidism. Your vet may recommend a blood test to measure the thyroxine levels in the blood, especially if you describe any of the above signs or they detect a fast heart rate, heart murmur or a palpable thyroid gland. Treatment options: 1. Hyperthyroidism can be cured via treatment with radioactive iodine. As the name suggests with this treatment the cat is give at tablet of iodine that is radioactive. The iodine accumulates in

the thyroid and destroys the excessive hormone producing tissue. This treatment has a 95 per cent success rate and has minimal side effects. The main draw backs with this treatment are that the cat will be radioactive for 7-14 days and need to be kept in hospital in a lead lined pen for this time. 2. Hyperthyroid can also be controlled with medications. This medication suppresses the thyroid gland from producing the thyroxine. This medication never cures the disease and the cat will need to be on it lifelong. It comes in many forms including, tablets, liquids, paste and transdermal gels. 3. A very specific diet produced by the dog food company Hills has been developed that controls hyperthyroidism via limiting the amount of iodine in food. Iodine is a key ingredient in the body’s production of thyroxine so limiting its intake limits the amount of thyroxine the body can produce. This diet, called y/d by Hills, needs to be extremely strict being the only source of nutrition your animal receives. They cannot have any treats, table scraps or even hunt for mice, otherwise the treatment won’t work. Again, this treatment option will never cure the cat. Overall hyperthyroidism is a curable and manageable condition. If you think your cat may have hyperthyroidism, please contact your vet.

Correas for winter colour
CORREAS, sometimes called “Native Fuchsias”, occur naturally from Queensland, through NSW, Victoria, South Australia and on the Bass Strait islands and in Tasmania. The individual correa flowers are not big, brassy or bold, yet their effect when massed in full flower is wonderful. They have become popular garden plants. There are approximately 11 species, around 26 subspecies and hundreds of cultivars and hybrids. Flower colour combinations are shades of pink, red, orange, yellow, green, purple, cream or white. New discoveries continue to be made. Forms range from ground covers to substantial shrubs of 1–3 metres. Flowers are usually pendant, with the exception of C. decumbens, which has red and green

upward-facing, tube-like flowers. Correas are long-lived, and will flower abundantly if pruned regularly. Taller species, such as C. Marian’s Marvel make attractive hedge plants. There are varieties suitable for every aspect - full shade, part shade, full sun, hot and dry or cold and wet, for seaside, inland, clay or sandy soils. Honeyeaters and parrots are attracted to their nectar-bearing flowers. Correas are not invasive.
They cross-pollinate readily and can occasionally regenerate in the home garden from seed. It’s fun to make an educated guess as to the probable parentage of volunteer seedlings. Such surprises are often worthy of propagating from cuttings to produce more of the same. For cheery winter colour, correas make showy pot plants. C. Dusky Bells is well-loved favourite. C. Autumn Blaze, C. reflexa ‘Jetty Red’ and C. ‘Jingle Bells’ also do well in tubs. A curiosity is C. bauerlenii [Chef’s Cap Correa]. It has light green petals below darker green flattened sepals which form the ‘cap’. It is listed as ‘vulnerable’ in the wild. For winter colour, with a delightful bonus of honeyeaters flitting among foliage and flowers, plant a few correas!

2017 Sangiovese LONG weekends are a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a mini holiday, an extra sleep in and if at all possible, get away from it all. It’s understandable that people from the city use them to escape the hustle and bustle and head to the country; causing a traffic jam on the highway heading out on a Friday night, only to face one again on their return Monday afternoon. Those of us who transitioned from city to country don’t miss that drive for a moment, content in the knowledge we’re lucky enough to live where everyone else dreams of being. With a choice of great wine regions in our backyard, any ordinary weekend is a chance to play tourist, taste and explore. Try spending a Sunday sampling salamis with Sangiovese, like this one from Cofield in Rutherglen. It has a deep cherry red col-
with Anita McPherson our which hints at the fruit to follow. There’s a vibrant and lively fruity aroma of ripe cherry fruit which invites you to dip in and taste this medium bodied wine’s savoury, red berry flavour. Enjoy the way the fruitiness is balanced with a sense of dried herbs, spice and gentle oak, giving the wine an earthiness which makes it great with spicy meats. It’s an ideal accompaniment for pizza, of course, but also for cured meats and cheeses which can be picked up from local producers only a stone’s throw from our many cellar doors. Who needs a weekend away? Taste the range at the cellar door in Wahgunyah or visit www. ĐŽĮ ĞůĚǁŝŶĞƐ͘ĐŽŵ͘ĂƵ

This Day in History, 1978 IN a burst of wintry weather, the Victorian Government Cabinet arrived in Wangaratta for a country meeting in the new council chambers building, and Premier Hamer took the opportunity to officially open the new Education Services building in Wangaratta.
UNLESS you are a ski bunny, winter can leave you feeling down, tired, hungry and achy all over. Some arthritis type conditions can leave some people feeling like a cripple in cold, wet and frosty days. Joints feel stiff, inflamed and your range of movement is severely compromised. You stay indoors and not too far from the heater if you can avoid it, take prescription and over the counter pain relief that may or may not be still working. You may be beginning to experience side effects from your pain relief.

Stan on patrol in Falls Creek
Stan said he is always training to keep up with the role, including following Australian Ski Patrol courses every few years, and recertifying in skills such as defibrillation and CPR annually. While treatment of injuries, and search and rescue is certainly a part of his job, Stan said much of the work he and his Falls Creek Ski Patrol colleagues carry out is educational and preventative, including placing signs and other warnings around the mountain to keep skiers and snowboarders informed. He said while he met many people while they were hurt or suffering, he loved being able to treat and reassure them, and try his best to make a bad day better. “It’s just satisfying, helping people,” he said. “People are always thankful that you can help them.” Stan said there are many ways

patrol started with morning weather reporting, opening the mountain, checking trails and constantly skiing around the different runs on the mountain to check them and ensure their safety. During the green season, he keeps busy supervising maintenance and safety of Falls Creek’s 40km of mountain bike trails, often doing bike patrols to keep an eye on trail safety. He has also worked overseas regularly, often on exchange with other snow resorts in the Northern Hemisphere, and said of ski patrolling, “you can’t imagine a better job”. Stan added that he loved being a part of the Falls Creek community. “It’s a great group of people that you meet everywhere you go,” he said. “It’s just a beautiful place - it’s a great, small community all year round. “You just don’t ever have a bad day.”

Local resorts open for business
WITH a very promising snow season opening last weekend, snow resorts across the region look set for a bumper season. While there are few official events happening at local mountains this week, there are plenty of activities on all mountains to welcome snow enthusiasts. There are also plenty of fun events planned for late June onwards at the North East’s resorts, and the Snow, Trek and Travel Mini Series will take place on Sunday, June 23 at Falls Creek. At Mt Hotham, the Brand New Day, aimed at beginner skiers and snowboarders, will take place on Saturday, June 22. June 22 will also see the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour at Mt Buller. Mt Buffalo is set to have snow play, tobogganing and cross country skiing available depending on snow coverage - with the Dingo Dell Café and Visitor Information Centre open to visitors, and to find out up to
date information see ski.com.au or talk to your local ski hire business. Due to early snowfall and wet conditions, Mt Buffalo’s seasonal road closures on the mountain have commenced early. The following roads were closed as of June 7 – Lake Catani Road, Reservoir Road and the road from Cresta car park to the Horn.

IT’S hard to imagine - in this day of antibiotics and advanced medicine - but there was a time in history when a single disease could cause the deaths of thousands of people virtually overnight. This week, we take a look at some diseases throughout history that were responisble for millions of deaths worldwide. Polio This disease is suspected to have been around for thousands of years. It usually spreads through contaminated food and water, and targets the human nervous system, which causes symptoms that usually affect the legs and lead to paralysis. In the United States, outbreaks peaked in 1952, when 57,628 cases were reported throughout the nation. Though there is no cure for this disease, a vaccine was developed in the 1950s that has proved effective for decades. Since this is a disease only carried by humans, widespread vaccinations are expected to remove any traces of the disease in future generations. Epidemic Typhus/Camp Fever Caused by tiny microbes carried by bodily lice, this devastating disease spread easily in close, cramped quarters and poverty-stricken cities dating back to the 1600s. Symptoms start out with a headache, nausea, and fever, but when left untreated, lead to heat exhaustion, effects on blood circulation, and other complica-
tions leading up to organ failure. This epidemic spread throughout Europe during the Thirty Years War in the 1600s and claimed over 10 million lives, but it regained strength and caused several million deaths in Russia, Poland and Romania during World War I. Malaria This mosquito-born illness is one of the longest-surviving threats to our livelihood, as records of the disease go back nearly 4000 years – and cases are still being recorded today. This is especially true in areas like sub-Saharan Africa, where between 350 to 500 million cases of malaria are diagnosed each year, though only a small percentage of them lead to death today. The largest Malaria epidemics spread throughout many different countries in World War I and World War II, killing over 100,000 American soldiers alone. Cholera This disease was common in India for centuries and moved on to the rest of the world in the 19th century. Most often spread through contaminated water and food, cholera causes flu-like symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, cramping, and severe dehydration, which ultimately leads to the death of those who cannot keep properly hydrated as their immune system fights the disease. Unfortunately, outbreaks are still occurring today, with an estimated three to five million cases and 120,000 deaths reported each year.
Smallpox Dating back to the 1500’s, the smallpox epidemic, stemming from the variola virus, has ravaged entire populations. It caused the death of nearly 90 million Native Americans when the Europeans brought it over to the Americas. Symptoms include body aches, high fevers, and a serious rash that results from fluid-filled bumps that leave extensive scarring on the skin. The disease killed an estimated 400,000 Europeans per year at the end of the 18th century, even though a vaccine was created in 1796. In spite of the vaccine, breakouts of this disease persist, most recently in the late 1960s, when two million people died in countries all over the globe. The Black Death Also known as the Bubonic Plague, The Black Death is considered to be the first true pandemic on earth, and it cut populations in half throughout parts of the world like Asia and Europe in the fourteenth century. Symptoms of Black Death include swollen lymph glands, fever, cough, bloody sputum and difficulty breathing. The underlying cause or epidemic strain is still being debated today, but thanks to developments in medicine, any resurfacing cases can be easily treated in early stages, so the immense loss in population as seen six centuries ago is unlikely.
