WANGARATTA resident Graeme Prowd has enjoyed volunteering for his community since 2015. The inspiring individual has been nominated as a ‘community hero’ in the Victorian Regional Achievement and Community Awards this year. Currently at the North East Multicultural Association (NEMA), Graeme has helped out with everything from office and maintenance work to teaching English. “I have been volunteering in Wangaratta at a couple of places since 2015 and NEMA was a natural choice for me,” he said. “I volunteered for a short time as a mentor with the L2P program and for two years as a volunteer driver with Community Accessability. “I don’t have a degree in English but I have a TESOL qualification which allows me to teach to students of other languages. “I had been teaching English in Asia and wanted to continue when I returned home. “I started doing odd jobs and then other needs cropped up over time but now I teach English, help people with citizenship and learner licence tests, and give smart phone and computer lessons.

Remember: source numbers must be advertised ONE year on since the introduction of the Pet Exchange Register, RSPCA Victoria is reminding those who are looking to purchase a cat, dog, kitten or puppy to ensure the breeder or seller publishes their source number in any advertisements to sell or give away an animal. A dog or cat advertised for sale with an attached source number and microchip details allows consumers to conďŹ rm the breeder or seller is registered on the Pet Exchange Register. It provides a level of transparency and traceability that did not exist in Victoria prior to its launch in 2019. New changes as of July 1, 2020 now stipulate the source number of the breeder, council pound, animal shelter, pet shop or foster carer that owns the animal will also be required when implanting a microchip into a dog or cat. The source number will be linked to the animal’s microchip details, to ensure the dog or cat’s origin can always be traced throughout its lifespan. While fees to obtain a source number were initially set to come into effect from July 1 this year, the Victorian Government has announced they will waive these fees due to the impacts of Coronavirus. RSPCA Victoria recommends adopting a pet from a reputable animal welfare organisation where possible. However, the Pet Exchange Regis-
with RSPCA Victoria ter provides a level of transparency for people looking to purchase a new cat or dog. â—† CANTANKEROUS: Citrus canker can spread quickly over short distances.
1)050 %"'' 2VFFOTMBOE
All about citrus canker CITRUS canker is a serious disease of citrus. Once established, it can only be controlled by destroying all the susceptible plants. It’s caused by the bacterium Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri. The disease can reduce the growth of citrus trees and cause blemishes on otherwise healthy fruit. It can spread rapidly over short distances, particularly in tropical and subtropical climates. Symptoms of citrus canker %JTFBTF CFHJOT BT TNBMM QJNQMF MJLF TQPUT UIBU BSF about 1mm in diameter and yellow in colour. As the spots enlarge, they become brown and corky with sunken centres and raised edges. Often each of these spots have a yellow ring surrounding them. Older lesions can be up to 1cm in diameter and in long-term infections, cankers of various sizes may appear at the same time. Similar symptoms appear on fruit, leaves and stems. Be careful not to confuse citrus canker with lemon scab (Elsinoe fawcettii). Lemon scab has drier lesions and no yellow ring surrounding them. Dispersal of citrus canker Xanthomonas citri can be splashed over short distances by rain and irrigation.

If contaminated water lands on people, machinery, trucks or cars then the bacterium can spread even further. Interstate or even international dispersal can occur by trade and movement of infected plants. Xanthomonas citri is also carried inside parts of plants such as fruits, leaves and branches. Feeding by the citrus leaf miner (Phyllocnitis citrella) can increase the number of lesions of citrus canker. Citrus canker in Australia In Australia, citrus canker has been eradicated several times after a quick response and destruction of susceptible plants. There were two outbreaks in the Northern Territory in 1991 and 1993 and one in Queensland in 2004. In those cases, two or more years of monitoring was required before eradication could be declared. More recently there were outbreaks of the disease in Western Australia and the Northern Territory in 2018. Citrus canker was declared eradicated in Western Australia near the end of 2019 and is subject to eradication in the Northern Territory. Protect your property To protect your property from citrus canker, be sure to maintain best practice biosecurity standards. Make sure propagation material is purchased from reputable suppliers and regularly check your orchard for citrus canker symptoms.

Get your wellness on this winter MANY people believe ‘health’ and ‘wellness’ are terms that simply mean being free from disease, but there is so much more to being truly well. Are you really well if you are overweight, forgetful, tired, moody, or have poor skin? What if you suffer from headaches, frequent colds, constipation or bloating? If you regularly experience these symptoms, you may not necessarily have a disease, but you aren’t truly well either. There are steps you can take to escape these frustrating complaints and enjoy true wellness. Here are the top five tips from North East Natural Health Centre’s experts: Sunshine breaks are the new coffee break: get outside and soak up that vitamin D. You will feel renewed by the fresh air and movement as much as the sun. Every 15 minutes helps.

Eat well and enjoy what you eat: healthy eating doesn’t have to be about some crazy diet program, where you hate everything you eat. It’s about working out which foods you love that also make you feel energised and well. Build a healthy network of friends: research shows that if your five best friends are overweight and tired, you are likely to be too. However the opposite is also true. So take a look at your ‘crowd’ and work together to be the image of healthy you desire. Find a ‘flow activity’: any activity that helps you to destress, laugh and feel good. You can achieve your goal of wellness: You don’t have to settle for feeling ‘just ok’. You can achieve wellness by making simple, sustainable changes to improve your energy, health and wellbeing over the long-term. 31d56709-v3/3120
IT is hard to talk about the extraordinary situation we are facing as residents of Victoria without constantly returning to the same words and well-worn expressions. There simply is no other way to say that this is unprecedented, but that we are all in this together, despite the fact those kinds of sayings become almost as exhausting as the circumstances. While words like lockdown, new-normal, curfew and quarantine are now commonplace, I’ve taking to standing up and shouting bingo every time I hear the word “pivot”. It’s a fun game you can play at home in front of the telly, it’s much healthier than the drinking game version, and each player can choose their favourite word of the moment. Relaxing and having a laugh is exactly what we need to do now, along with exploring popular wine varieties like a Pinot Grigio. Lana Pinot Grigio is fresh, fruity and lively with aromas of peach and gentle honeysuckle. The flavour zings with green apple and pear and there’s a real bite from lemony citrus acidity. It is made in the King Valley by the Pizzini family and is great

“When I am not doing that I assist in the office and do general maintenance work. “I get a thrill from seeing people achieve; the smile on a grandma’s face when she learns to send and receive pictures to and from her grandchildren is heart-warming. “I would highly recommend volunteering - it is extremely rewarding.” Nominations for the regional awards close on Friday with seven of the nine category winners to receive $2000 into an account in their name from Bank of Melbourne. The other two category winners will receive a PRIME7 Television Package and one of the nine category winners will be named the “Bank of Melbourne Regional Achiever of the Year” and will receive an additional $2000 and state trophy. “I initially rejected the idea of being a local hero; I am just helping out, nothing
special,” Graeme said. “If the award can help promote NEMA and the wonderful work all of the volunteers do there and enthuse others to volunteer anywhere in our community, then that will be reward for me.” NEMA president Susan Ingleton said Graeme’s knowledge and understanding has been invaluable to the North East Multicultural Association. “Not only is his skill and personality able to engage and enthuse the students in his English as a second language classes but his ability to navigate and advocate in cross cultural situations is appreciated by all,” she said. “Graeme is very patient and understanding as he tackles the sometimes difficult task of assisting people of all ages, languages, backgrounds and educational standards to access the internet and use computers, smart phones and electronic devices for pleasure, as well as the necessities of contacting Centrelink, other government departments,

Butter chickpea
The interesting science of babies
Butter chickpea is a family favourite. It cemented a place in my heart after I learned to make it with my Dad in primary school as a weekend treat. This fragrant recipe will fill your home and your stomach with love and happiness.
Optional: Can be done with chicken and garlic naan from your favourite supermarket
Butter chickpea Ingredients: Two cans of chickpeas, rinsed One finely diced onion One cup of green beans, chopped One cup of jasmine rice (or the rice of your choice) Two tablespoons of Greek yoghurt 2 crushed cloves of garlic 2 tablespoons of minced ginger 1 teaspoon garam masala 2 teaspoons ground coriander 2 teaspoons ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon turmeric 1 teaspoon chilli powder 410g tomato paste 50g butter
Method: Prepare the rice according to the instructions listed on its packet Melt the butter in a large saucepan and add the onion, chickpeas and green beans. Sauté these for 3 minutes. Add garlic, ginger and spices to saucepan and mix in. After the spices have become fragrant, add tomato paste and greek yoghurt to create a thick sauce consistency. Taste and add any ingredients to suit your preferences as you let simmer for 10-15 minutes. Serve up rice and spoon chickpea mix on top. Optional: Add chopped spring onion and garlic naan to serve.
HELLO to one and all. First allow me to apologise for my abrupt departure without a proper sign off. COVID-19 saw a brief reduction in the pages of Regional Extra, and then, in happier news, my partner and I recently had a baby girl. So life has been a bit crazy for the last couple of months. That’s why, this week, in keeping with the typical behaviour of new parents, and to avoid all that horrid doom and gloom out there, I’m going to dedicate an entire article to talking about babies - with a healthy dose of gooing and gaaing thrown in. Cute, cuddly and full of curiosity, babies are amazing to say the least. Prepare to be blown away by these riveting revelations about your little one’s first year of life. 1. Babies are born to boogie Studies have proven that babies are born with an innate sense of rhythm. While they may not be able to bust a move quite yet, research shows that babies have an instinctive ability to respond to the rhythm and tempo of music and may even find it more engaging than speech. 2. Newborns have natural aquatic instincts when in water Babies are born with a “diving reflex” known as bradycardic response, which causes their body to naturally adapt to their surroundings when submerged in water. Bub’s heart rate will slow down and she will instinctively hold her breath when under water. What’s even more incredible is that, like fish, babies can actually breathe and swallow at the same time for the first few months of their life. They learn this talent while in the womb but begin to lose this ability around the six month mark.
3. Babies are born with 300 bones That’s 94 more than adults. Where do the extra bones go? They fuse together during development. 4. Smiles are reserved for human babies only That’s right - human infants are the only species that smile at their parents. Aren’t we blessed? 5. Newborns don’t have kneecaps No kneecap? - no worries. Babies make do without. In fact, a baby’s kneecap, also known as the patella, doesn’t develop into hard bone until the little one enters preschool (between the ages of three and five). 6. Infants first recognise the colour red Some experts suggest newborns can only see black, white and grey while others suggest they can see different hues but they are incredibly blurry. However, the first colour infants recognise is red. The last colours? Blue and purple. 7. Babies grow at an insanely speedy rate Babies double their birth weight by five months and triple it by the first year (approximately). 8. Newborns are tear-free They cry but they don’t produce real tears until approximately the age of three weeks. But, thanks to an overload of emotions and an influx in hormonal balance, new mums tend to make up for their missing tears during those first few days. Call it sympathy tears. And blame the hormones. 9. Babies deprive their parents of approximately 44 days of sleep Trust me, I know. I didn’t need science to tell me that one.
