◆ FOCUS ON FILMMAKING: Robyn Hughan’s documentary film on a refugee family, Journey Beyond Fear, is being received well by audiences across the North East and beyond.

GROWING up on a property in tranquil Tatong, Robyn Hughan always daydreamed about seeing the world and meeting new people. She remembers sitting in a paddock at her late father’s farm as a little girl and thinking, “one day, I’m going to discover that world out there”. And this urge to broaden her horizons has led to a rich career in documentary filmmaking. She has filmed a number of shorter documentaries, mainly focusing on refugees and other human rights issues, but has spent the past seven years working on a feature documentary, Journey Beyond Fear, concentrating on the plight of Afghan refugee Zahra and her family. Robyn said she began working on the film in 2011, after being asked by a Malaysian non-government agency (NGO) to visit some Afghan refugees on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur while she was in the city for screenings of one of her previous documentaries. Following extensive research and several visits, she began making the film, at times staying with Zahra and her family for extended periods of time in Malaysia. She said she made a conscious effort to avoid voiceovers to allow the family to speak for themselves and tell their own story. “It’s pretty much a human story,” Robyn said. “I like to let the characters speak for themselves.” Robyn said she was influenced greatly by Iranian cinema, which concentrates on intimate and honest moments and often uses metaphors to get the point across.

SMBs struggle to access finance THE September Quarter 2018 Sensis Business Index, released in late November, has revealed Victorian small and medium businesses (SMBs) are struggling to access finance more than any other state or territory in Australia. The report, which measures the SMB activity, expectations and confidence over a threemonth period, found that when it came to accessing finance, Victorian SMBs were sitting six points below the national average to record a net balance of -23. Sensis Chief Executive Officer, John Allan, feels the Banking Royal Commission could be impacting these results. “This is a trend we have seen across the board with the national average score for the ability to access finance dropping a massive 14 points from what was seen in the last report. “In the midst of the Banking Royal Commission, these results support fears expressed by small and medium business owners about the inability to access finance. “With accessibility sitting at a five-year low, this could result in negative implications for new

and existing SMBs – particularly in Victoria.” Confidence levels among Victorian SMBs fell six points to meet the national average of +42, with lower sales dominating the concerns expressed, as well as unfavourable government policies. Melbourne SMBs were once again more confident than those in regional Victoria, recording balances of +46 (mirroring national average) and +34 respectively. Despite the fall in confidence, close to three in five (57 per cent) SMBs in Victoria remained positive in their business prospects for the next 12 months. “While we witnessed a decline in wages, prices, profitability and employment last quarter, sales indicators were positive. “Expectations for the current quarter present a promising outlook, exceeding the national average for sales, wages and profitability,” said Allan. “In addition to this, close to one in four (23 per cent) SMBs in Victoria are still confident the economy is on the rise and, although three points below the national average, it’s clear this is driving increased confidence.”

with Helen van Riet AUSTRALIAN PLANTS SOCIETY (VIC) ◆ AUSSIE CHRISTMAS: A young Wollemi Pine grown from seed.

A ‘living fossil’ Christmas tree IN 1994 there was great excitement among botanists, when a sharp-eyed bushwalker collected specimens from a grove of unusual pine-like trees in a remote gully in the Wollemi National Park, NSW. Until then, 200 millionyear-old fossils were the only evidence that this species had ever existed. Following discovery of this rare “living fossil”, extensive research was undertaken to ensure its preservation. The NSW Parks and Wildlife Service undertook a major conservation and public education program. The Wollemi Pine [Araucaria nobilis] is a member of the Araucariaceae family. Araucariaceae were distributed throughout both hemispheres approximately 140–200 million years ago until 66 million years ago, when there was a sudden mass extinction of three-quarters of the plant and animal species on Earth.

In the Southern Hemisphere Araucariaceae survived. Well-known species include the Norfolk Island Pine, the New Zealand Kauri, the Bunya Bunya Pine and the Monkey Puzzle Tree. Wollemi Pines can grow up to 40 metres. The trunk is straight and symmetrically branched. Foliage is dark green and softly pendulous, with lighter green new growth tips in spring. Trees are self-fertile. Mature pine cones encase many seeds. My young plant (pictured) was grown this year from seed collected from a Wollemi Pine cone. It is essential to provide good drainage and not to over-water. Water only when dry, by saturating completely. If it is an indoor plant, leave it to

drain in a shady position outside before returning indoors. It can be pruned to shape or heavily. Make the cuts on upright stems and branches. New buds will emerge from just below the cut. Pruning is best done in winter. A. nobilis makes a great pot plant or garden specimen for the larger garden. It is tough, low maintenance and long-lived. It can survive temperatures from -5°C to 45°C. Why not make a Dinkum Aussie “living fossil” your Christmas tree this year? “Having a Wollemi Pine in the garden allows everyone to help conserve this unique endangered species.” - Dr Cathy Offord, Royal Botanical Gardens Sydney.

FEATURE STORY

How do antibiotics work? ANTIBIOTICS are one of the most commonly prescribed medications for animals and humans, but there are misconceptions about when they should be used and what they can achieve. Antibiotics are a group of drugs that act on bacteria to disrupt their normal function and essentially destroy them. They should be used when there is a confirmed bacterial infection that is causing illness. One important thing is antibiotics will have no effect on viral infections because bacteria and viruses are different pathogens. There are many different types of bacteria, with varying structure and function. As a result, many different types of antibiotics have been created to target specific weaknesses in certain types of bacteria. This means it is important to use the right antibiotic for the infection that exists because each antibiotic will only target a certain type of bacteria. The best course of action is to sample the site of the infection and grow (or culture) the bacteria on an agar plate in a laboratory so the type of bacteria can be identified and experiments done to determine which antibiotics kill the organism.

with Tim Craig VETERINARIAN This is called a culture and sensitivity test. A specifically targeted antibiotic can then be chosen which will be effective in treating the infection. When it isn’t possible or practical to do a culture and sensitivity test, an educated guess may be made as to what type of bacteria is likely based on the appearance of the infection and the organ involved, as certain families of bacteria are more common in particular sites of the body. In these situations, the veterinarian will often choose a broad spectrum antibiotic, which is effective against a wider range of bacteria. It is important to follow the directions carefully, as antibiotics will only be effective given at the correct dosage, time intervals, and for the appropriate length of time. It is also important to only use antibiotics when they are needed, and are likely to be effective. Using antibiotics when not required can result in unwanted side effects, and may contribute to antibiotic resistance, which becoming a problem worldwide.

◆ BIG PROJECT: Among those involved in the filming of Journey Beyond Fear were (back, left to right) Steve Warne (producer), Zahra’s father Bismilla, Robyn Hughan (writer/director/producer), Zahra’s sister Sakina, Alyce Platt (music) and Zahra’s mother Fatima; and (front, left to right) Zhara and her sister Zainab.

She said the production process had many ups and downs, with Zahra in particular losing hope for a positive future at times and suffering severe depression. “I engaged with them on a very personal level,” Robyn said of the filming process. She said that making the movie had opened her eyes to the ongoing plight of refugee people. “There’s a lot of misunderstandings about refugees,” she said, adding that not all refugees live in camps, or can apply for asylum in the first country they reach. “It explores the situation of people

that have no hope – people don’t know what it’s like to live with no hope,” she said of her documentary. The documentary saw her film alongside fellow filmmaker Steve Warne, while Australian musical identity and former television personality Alyce Platt put together the music. She said she has had much positive feedback on the story and how people have engaged with the family, including one farmer who lives near her in Tatong attending a screening in Swanpool and exclaiming, “these are the kind of people I would love to have as neighbours”. Robyn said she hoped the film would help be a catalyst to change people’s minds about refugees, and help create

a more inclusive global community. The family now lives in Australia, with Zahra thriving and studying nursing at Monash University, and Robyn said she is happy to see the family able to have stability and make a new life for themselves. With more metropolitan and even international screenings on the agenda for the near future, there are also screenings planned in the North East in late February 2019 through GO TAFE. More information on the film and its subjects, including information on upcoming screenings, can be found at journeybeyondfear.com or on Facebook on the Journey Beyond Fear page.

is all systems go on the Murray cod front. I am really enjoying seeing so many young people catching cod in the waterways at the moment. Fishing has always been a popular past time for kids, but at the moment it is beyond popular - it’s the cool thing to do. All lures and baits seem to be working very well at present, however surface lures seem to be the real standout with so many anglers enjoying success while fishing with them. If you have not experienced the excitement of catching a Murray cod on

a surface lure, then you need to give it a go. One surface strike (known as a boof) is all you need to get you hooked. There’s never been a better time that right now to target Murray cod in North East Victoria. Away from the Murray cod, I was talking to an old friend named Bomber in Shepparton on Sunday. Bomber and his wife told me of some great success that they have had fishing for yellowbelly in Lake Nillahcootie recently, catching upwards of 10 fish in an afternoon.

COD, cod and more cod. Since the Murray cod season opened on December 1 my social media news feeds have been awash with photos of Murray cod caught from all over the region. As a rule of thumb, if you know of a waterway with Murray cod in it, then now is the time to fish it because the cod are biting everywhere at the moment. This is the best time of the year to catch Murray cod with the heat just arriving. Once the extreme heat hits us they will slow down a bit, but for now it

◆ BREAK FROM ROUTINE: Crafting is a good example of a ow activity.

Going with the flow to relieve stress IN our busy lives we are confronted with endless challenges, details to remember, places to be and people to see, (especially this time of year!) and it’s very easy to get caught up in this merry-go-round of life. We look back over the year and wonder where it has gone! When was the last time we stopped and did something just for us? No wonder we feel tired and frazzled! When you are feeling like this, is it good to remember your ow and how easy and simple it can be to get in and out of your ow. What is ow I hear you ask? It is a feeling of being totally in balance, ‘being able to perform an activity which you are fully immersed in a feeling of energised focus, full involvement and enjoyment in the process of the activity’.

Everyone has an activity or hobby that brings them this kind of feeling. The deďŹ nition of a ow activity is ‘when you do something that gives you joy and that you don’t notice time passing’. It’s like a little holiday for your mind. A real holiday needs to be ‘time out’ from the everyday duties, responsibilities, routines, stressors and crazies of your usual life. It should feature doing the things you love and allowing your thoughts to get back in a straight line and unwind. You can do this by introducing regular ow activities into your day or week. Flow activities are not selďŹ sh. It is taking the time to get your energy back so that you can give back your energy to those who need it most. To decide what your ow activity is start by writing down ďŹ ve activities that

you really enjoy. The aim is to come back to this list whenever your energy is going at. Or to use a more preventative approach set a challenge to do them as often as you can. Once a day? Once a week? The more often you take a little time to recharge, the better your energy will be. So it seems the key is to ask yourself what makes a perfect breathing space for you? Are you feeling overwhelmed with this question? Don’t know where to start or how to ďŹ t it in? Or you need help staying on task and achieving this for your own health? Then come see us in clinic, we will help you easily achieve this.

FOOD TALK

De Bortoli Wines Prosecco AFTER settling on a date when a group of girlfriends could finally catch up for lunch, it would be nice to think I put a lot of effort into choosing just the right wine. Maybe I’d visit a few wineries or fastidiously read through all the labels at a good bottle shop. Truth is like them, I’m usually running late, so they’re more likely to score the first bottle that caught my eye on the supermarket shelf because I forgot my glasses. This time it was De Bortoli Prosecco, attracted by the colour and La Dolce Vitathemed label, which combines cool, vintage style with the concept of an independent girl having fun. The combination of King Valley and Prosecco also gave this frivolity some kind of substance. They liked the label and the contents, knocking it off before

with Anita McPherson the meal arrived. This Prosecco requires you to unscrew the wire and pop the cork, signalling we’ve crossed the starting line and are officially having a good time. It pours with gusto, lots of fine bubbles fighting their way up the lightly golden liquid and leaving a white froth on top. There’s a touch of lemon fruit and blossom in the aroma and a little green apple in the gentle flavour, accompanied by a pleasant creaminess on the way to the zingy, dry finish. It’s great shared over lunch with friends, or kicking back on your own on the couch. Having fun need not require a lot of thought, effort or even company.

This Day in History, 1973 WORK was begun on the demolition of one of Wangaratta’s most elegant old buildings, the National Bank on the corner of Murphy and Ely Streets, to allow the construction of a new building. The handsome wrought iron fence was saved, and was used to fence the original graves of early Wangaratta settlers at the Pioneer Cemetery, at the end of Faithfull Street overlooking the King River.

This recipe serves six, with the mushrooms complemented by Baja sauce and citrus rough guacamole, and was created by Miguel Maestre for Australian Mushrooms. More recipes like this can be found at www.australianmushrooms.com.au. Baja Sauce Combine all ingredients in a mortar and pestle (or a small food processor) until all ingredients are smooth. Set aside. Corn Salsa Heat up 1tbsp olive oil in a medium sized pan over a high heat. Sauté corn for 2 minutes until golden, add to a bowl with the rest of ingredients, then mix together. Set aside. Mexican Mushrooms Then, marinate the mushrooms with all ingredients, panfry on a medium heat for 2 minutes on each side, to avoid burning the marinade.

Set aside. Crunchy Soft Tacos Finally, cut both avocados in half and remove each pip, setting aside. Using a fork inside each half, mash the avocado together with lime juice, sour cream and olive oil to form a rough guacamole. To preserve the bright green and avoid oxidation, you can return the pips to the centre of the avocados and stick the halves together to close till you are ready to use. Spread each soft tortilla with a spoonful of guacamole, then wrap around the hard taco shell. Gently press the soft tortilla to the sides of the hard taco shells, using the guacamole as a glue. Repeat with remaining taco shells and soft tortillas. To serve, spoon a little of the salsa into the base of the hard taco, top with Mexican mushrooms and drizzle with Baja sauce. Eat immediately.

Ingredients: Baja Sauce 1 jalapeño, roughly chopped 10 pickled green peppercorns ½ bunch coriander, roughly chopped 1 lime, juiced 3 tbsp sour cream 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil Salt, to taste Corn salsa 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1 tin canned corn 2 tomatoes, cores removed, diced same size corn kernels Leaves from ½ bunch coriander ½ red onion, diced size of kernels 1 lime, juiced 1 jalapeño, sliced Salt and pepper, to taste Mexican Mushrooms 4 flat mushrooms, cut in thick slices 3 tbsp Mexican seasoning 1 tsp dried chilli (optional) Splash extra virgin olive oil Crunchy Soft Tacos 6 taco shells 6 soft tortillas, softened on an open flame (or in the microwave) 2 ripe avocados Splash lime juice Dash extra virgin olive oil 2 tbsp sour cream Salt and pepper, to taste

Are CVs dead? IT’S no secret that an up-to-date and engaging LinkedIn proďŹ le can help get you noticed by recruiters – whether you are actively or passively looking for a new role. But does that mean that CVs are becoming less important? According to recruiting experts Hays, the short answer is no. Nick Deligiannis, managing director of Hays in Australia and New Zealand, says your CV and LinkedIn proďŹ le are two separate, but complementary entities which serve different purposes. “If you register with a recruiter or apply for a job, your CV will be viewed ďŹ rst,â€? he explains. “This document gives the recruiter a factual and chronological snapshot of your skills and experience and explains why you are both interested in and suitable for this job speciďŹ cally. “It provides the background knowledge a recruiter needs to determine if you have the skills and experience required for a particular role. “Based on the information conveyed in your CV, the recruiter will form an opinion of your ďŹ t for the role. “In most cases they will then search for you on LinkedIn to learn more and see evi-

dence of your work. You’ll then either be invited in for an interview, or will not make the shortlist.â€? Today however, recruiters and employers are also using digital technology and data science analytics to reach deep into candidate pools to ďŹ nd suitable talent. According to Hays, it’s your online presence and LinkedIn proďŹ le that enable you to be found in this way. Even in this case though, Nick says if you are interested in the role a recruiter will still require a CV to send on to clients. “That’s why it is important that you continue to adapt your CV to ďŹ t the types of roles you are applying for,â€? he says. “You can then complement this by creating a strong LinkedIn proďŹ le to bring your CV to life. “For example, add visual examples to demonstrate your skills and achievements, such as videos from a conference you organised or a PDF of an external document you put together for your executive.â€? Remember, it isn’t a case of your LinkedIn proďŹ le versus your CV; rather, Hays says you should create a strong, professional and active LinkedIn proďŹ le to support and bring all the claims you have on your CV to life.

TECH & SCIENCE

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ LIKE CLOCK-WORK: The Antikythera Mechanism’s intricate design and construction makes it a marvel that was well ahead of it’s time. (Inset) a reconstruction of the mechanism.

The world’s oldest computer - the Antikythera Mechanism IN 1900 divers working off the coast of the Greek Island of Antikythera, situated near Crete, made a startling discovery as they combed the sea floor for sponges. Amongst the coral and rocks they found the remains of a ship that had sunk some 2000 years earlier at around 70 BCE. The ancient Roman vessel was laden with pottery, oil lamps, finely worked vases and some of the most prized works of art of its day, including bronze statues. Compared to this hoard of antiquity, the small, heavily corroded box they also discovered seemed fairly inconsequential, and was largely ignored for decades after its recovery. But little did people know

that the box in fact housed a mechanical device so complex and intricate that is was, in fact, at least 1400 years ahead of its time. An elegant device, for a more civilised age Dubbed, the ‘Antikythera Mechanism’ the device tracked the lunar calendar, predicted eclipses, and charted the position and phase of the Moon. It also tracked the seasons and ancient festivals like the Olympics. The calendar was based on the time from one full moon to the next, and a special dial allowed the user to also envision the seasons, which would have been useful for agriculture. Since the ancient Babylonians figured out the cycle of

eclipses, the inventor of the Antikythera Mechanism included two dials that rotate to show both lunar and solar eclipses. But the most sophisticated thing the mechanism did was lunar calculations - it could figure out the Moon’s period at a given time and model its elliptical orbit. Consisting of at least 30 bronze gears in a wooden container that was only the size of a shoebox, the clockwork mechanism was highly advanced for its time. By turning a hand-crank, the user could move forward or backward in time. The crank made the gears move and rotate a series of dials and rings on which there are inscriptions and annota-

tions of Greek zodiac signs and Egyptian calendar days. The mechanism also includes hands or pointers for Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn - all of which are easily visible in the sky - as well as a rotating ball that showed the phases of the Moon. The parts that work these planetary pointers are gone, but text on the front plate of the mechanism confirms that the planetary motion was modeled mathematically using numerous complex gears—and that it was highly accurate to within one degree in 500 years. Such precision is truly incredible and advanced. Move aside Turing, ancient Greeks beat you to it In fact, the Antikythera Mech-

anism was so advanced that a device approaching it’s complexity, although not it’s compact size, would not be created for another 1400 years - thus it earned the title of the earliest computer ever to be discovered. Alas, it seems that the information to build such a mechanism was lost through time, perhaps because it was a specialty device or expensive to create. Other such devices are mentioned in contemporary records but no others have ever been recovered, suggesting - perhaps obviously - that these devices were exceedingly rare. Still, technology such as this doesn’t exist in a vacuum, and many researchers are confident that earlier, less complex devices will be unearthed over time.

No job too big or small. We can handle it. Get

And it even comes with its own instruction manual Despite its complexity the mechanism, it came with written instructions on a bronze plate attached to the box, suggesting that it was designed to be used by people other than the engineer who created it. The inscription, which is in Koine Greek (the most common form of the ancient language), mentions the cycles, dials, and some of the functions of the mechanism. While the text doesn’t specifically tell someone how to use it - and assumes some amount of prior knowledge of astronomy - it provides written-out labels for the person looking at the mechanism.

Seinfeld (7Flix, 7pm, Monday-Thursday): A recent video showing 20-somethings reacting to this series was disturbing for anyone with a sense of humour; it’s still so much better than any new content on our screens. Jamie and the Nonnas (WIN, 8.30pm, Wednesday): It’s always enjoyable to watch Jamie cooking, and when it’s whipping up Italian food in Italy, you can’t go wrong.

MAINTAINING the interest of young people is a constant battle for religious traditions in the modern age. Brought up in a vastly different society even to their parents, let alone the grandparents who held faith as a cornerstone of life, millennials can be a tough crowd for churches. They are more likely to choose social justice action, often in non-faith related groups, over aligning themselves with specific religions, or to describe

themselves as “spiritual” rather than “religious”. Which is where the premise of this show comes in; in essence, it tells us God has quipped with a wry smile: “Well, if you can’t beat them, join them”, and developed a social media profile. The series centres on confirmed atheist Miles Finer, a New Yorker who lost any semblance of faith after he lost his mother to cancer when he was young. While making ends meet working in a call centre, Miles

His podcast, a source of tension between Miles and his Dad (a priest) is on the verge of discovery by broadcasting big wigs when the gung-ho non-believer receives a friend request from someone purporting to be God. He finds himself accepting

the request, and in well-crafted episodes which can easily be viewed as stand-alone instalments, is offered friend suggestions by “the God account” which lead him to question his firm beliefs, or at least keep a more open mind. Throw in a love interest in the form of online journalist Cara Bloom (Miles’ first friend suggestion from God), best mate Rakesh, a talented hacker, and a
