13 - 19 February, 2019 ◆ NURTURING NATURE: Ecologist Lisa Farnsworth has many duties in her work at Winton Wetlands. She is seen here recording video for an informative app.

A voice for nature By KYLIE WILSON A PASSION for animals and the natural environment has spurred on Wangaratta ecologist Lisa Farnsworth through a career that has taken her across the country and back again. She recalls always being outside as a youngster, and having an insatiable curiosity to find out how things worked. Her role in the past few years has been as the restoration ecologist at Winton Wetlands, but Lisa has had a drive to protect and preserve ecosystems since her days growing up

in regional areas including Omeo and Wangaratta. Inspired by her passions for biology and chemistry and encouraged by her teachers, she went on to study a biological science degree at La Trobe University, majoring in zoology and genetics. Following that, she seized the opportunity to do an honours year with Deakin University examining the diving behaviour of fur seal pups at Wilson’s Promontory, camping on a remote island for weeks at a time.

Finding super sparks $860 million worth of joy NEW data released by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) shows that Australians were busy finding and consolidating their superannuation accounts towards the end of 2018. More than 66,000 people found and consolidated over 105,000 accounts worth more than $860 million from October to December 2018 using ATO online accessed via myGov. Assistant Commissioner Graham Whyte said that these figures were an encouraging result as the ATO continues its drive to reunite people with their hardearned superannuation and minimise fees through consolidating multiple accounts. This represents real savings and a better retirement outcome. “Tidying up seems to be a hot topic at the moment, so before you spend too much time re-organising your sock drawer and kitchen cupboards this summer, take a few minutes to tidy up your superannuation,” Mr Wyte said. “Seeing the extra money in your consolidated superannuation will definitely spark joy.” People in New South Wales are leading the way in tidying up their superannuation. “But there is still over $17.5 billion in lost and unclaimed super,” Mr Whyte said. perannuation account details, including any that you have lost or forgotten, and consolidate your accounts any time by linking your myGov account to ATO online services. “If you’re not sure whether to consolidate, check with your super fund who can advise you on issues such as insurance that may be attached to your accounts,” Mr Whyte said. Summer pruning can help IT has certainly been a challenge this summer in the garden. Extreme temperatures have taken their toll on not only the plants but gardeners as well. It is difficult to get motivated to do much more than water, which I hope you have had a small reprieve from with a bit of rain. With the temperatures a little cooler, now is the time to take advantage and get outside again. Many of us think that the time to prune fruit trees is in winter. This is true but it is also a good idea to do a summer prune. Reducing the canopy and removing damaged and crowded branches is best done now.

Because the tree is in active growth, pruning cuts heal a lot faster than they do after a winter prune. You can just do a light tidy up if your trees are young and don’t have overcrowding or damage, but some trees will really benefit from a decent cut back. Peaches and nectarines produce fruit on new wood (growth now that produces next year’s fruit) so timely pruning of these trees will encourage fresh growth that will be next summer’s crop. Pears, plums and apples and cherries will benefit from a fairly heavy prune of lateral branches (secondary branches that grow out from the main trunk)and fruit spurs can form on the

new growth produced. Keeping your fruit trees at a manageable height will help with netting for birds, fruit fly control and picking. After you have pruned the trees give them a good soak with a seaweed based tonic that will help with recovery and with resistance to heat and pests. The humid conditions we have been experiencing in the last week or so is unfortunately ideal conditions for fruit fly to thrive. Stay vigilant with picking crops, managing affected fruit and vegetables and maintaining traps and lures. Just remember, autumn is closer with each passing day. Happy gardening.

Addison’s Disease in dogs

A voice for nature Ŷ

ADDISON’S Disease (Hypoadrenocorticism) is caused by a lower than normal production of hormones, such as cortisol, by the adrenal glands. These hormones help regulate numerous complex processes and participate in critical functions such as salt/sugar/ water balance in the body. Addison’s disease can affect any breed/age/sex but most commonly occurs in young to middle-aged female dogs. Breeds such as Portuguese Water Dog, Bearded Collie, Poodle, Nova Scotia Dog Tolling Retriever, West Highland White Terrier and Labrador Retriever are commonly affected. The signs of Addison’s disease may be severe and appear suddenly, or may occur intermittently and vary in severity. Signs may include lethargy, depression, lack of appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea, and occasionally increased thirst/in-

She also did a four year La Trobe PhD program with reptiles in the Murray Mallee region, studying how different fauna are impacted by fire, followed by working for several years for Australian Wildlife Conservancy on a project to help reintroduce threatened species to the Mt Gibson area in Western Australia on an old sheep station turned wildlife sanctuary. “It was a really unique experience,” she said of her time in WA. “I pride myself on being a bit of a generalist,” she said of her diverse career to date. “There’s a sense of responsibility to give the environment and the animals in it a voice.” In 2014, a position opened up at Winton Wetlands to utilise her skills, and Lisa has worked there ever since, living locally with her husband and two children. Among her current projects is ongoing work to reestablish Growling Grass Frogs – large frogs with a very distinctive croak – to the Winton Wetlands Reserve. This project has included researching the feasibility of reintroduction, habitat enhancement and more. “It would be really great to have them again,” Lisa said of the species. Another of her projects has seen her working with the community towards the conservation of different species of turtle in the wetlands. Other aspects of her work at the wetlands include fauna surveys, species translocation, revegetation strategies and reviews, and much more.

VET CORNER ◆ VAST EXPERIENCE: Lisa Farnsworth pictured during a research project she worked on concerning the diving habits of fur seals on Kanowna Island.

Lisa especially loves working with like minded members of the public, especially the Friends of Winton Wetlands, “passionate citizen scientists,” and keen school students who live locally. “I’ve got a chance to do a bit of research, but also have contact with the community,” she said of her role. “It’s a nice balance.” Lisa especially likes to inspire young people, especially young

women, and show them “what you can do with a love of science”, and said she finds a lot of joy and fulfilment in her work. “Do what you enjoy and work hard at it, and things just fall into place,” she said. Find out more about Lisa’s work and Winton Wetlands at wintonwetlands.org.au or follow Winton Wetlands on Facebook.

creased urine production. Routine laboratory tests often show a low blood sodium and high potassium. They may also have elevated renal enzymes and changes in their white blood cell count. Long term treatment involves the administration of hormones in either daily tablets or a longer lasting injection. Because dogs with Addison’s disease cannot produce more cortisol in response to stress, owners should try to minimise stress wherever possible. Addison’s Disease is not curable but with appropriate treatment and monitoring it is possible for these dogs to live a long and happy life.

FINALLY a reprieve from the humidity. If it hasn’t been 45 degrees it has been 35 and super humid. The weather change over the weekend has really increased the player comfort level, and may have done so without slowing the fishing too much. Last week I went cod fishing a couple of times with mixed results. One evening Brett Corker and I caught six Murray cod close to Wangaratta, all on lures, and a few days later I only caught one. So the cod fishing was a bit patchy during the storms week. It was Indian cod fishing. Apache

here and apache there… On the weekend a large group of us fished the Lower Ovens River at an area most locals know as ‘Frosts’. Between us we had eight fishing rods in the river and managed to catch three Murray cod, all undersize and caught on cheese. We also caught one turtle and one big carp. I was fishing with local YouTube kids Jayden Lloyd (Jaycod fishing) and Jobe Currie (Murray_Doc fishing). Jobe caught the largest Murray cod of the evening at 49cm, while his cousin Jayden caught the biggest carp on

worms. I am the turtle king! Last Thursday I ventured back up to Lake Buffalo chasing redfin, this time with my fly rod. I had an absolute blast catching a dozen or so small redfin. I am unsure of the name of the fly that I chose, but it was a streamer type fly that I was stripping through the water making it look like it was swimming, and the redfin loved it. Both Lake Buffalo and Lake William Hovell are dropping in water level quite quickly at the moment, which is usually when the redfin bite best in both lakes. Both lakes will be worth a try now.

ENTERTAIN YOURSELF

YOUR HEALTH

Body check DO you ever feel like your body’s ‘check engine’ light is on and you’re still trying to drive like everything is fine? The holidays are over, the kids are back at school, you are back at work. Now you are sitting there thinking, “ooohh I’ve got no energy”. It might be time for a health check. Until April 1 you can still take advantage of your Private Health Insurance. This covers new and return appointments, but as of April it is no longer available to naturopathic appointments. So, if you have been thinking about booking in, use it before you lose it. When people come to see a naturopath, they are usually not feeling 100 per cent, and are experiencing symptoms such as: - Being so wound up they can’t relax. - Feeling so tired that they could collapse. - A grumbly digestive system that bloats, cramps with constipation or changing motions. - Hormonal imbalance like PMS ‘flu’ or ‘fatigue’ PMS pain or heavy irregular cycles. - Mood swings, low mood, flat mood or anxious fatigue. Most of the time patients just don’t feel themselves. Often, they have had medical investigations that indicate everything is fine, however they don’t feel well and are not experiencing the optimal health for them. If this sounds familiar, your naturopath would love to help. They love working with clients on all the above symptoms using simple diet alterations, gentle stretching practices, meditations, relaxations, correcting nutritional deficiencies and hormonal imbalances and for everything else there are herbal prescriptions that bring about calm, stamina, life endurance, remove trapped wind and balance hormones and digestive systems.

WINE TALK

FOOD TALK

Pfeiffer Wines Classic Tawny EACH year the summer vegetable harvest is completely unpredictable, depending largely on the weather but also on the soil, the quality of the seedlings and the care given by the gardener. A huge effort usually goes in at the beginning of spring when we promise not to let time get away from us and to keep up with the watering, feeding and weeding. But then before you know it there are knee-high weeds, foot long zucchini and tomato plants tipping over because they’re not properly secured. This year the tomatoes aren’t as big, peppers are taking forever but the crisp cucumbers are having a good year - powering over the top of everything else. Still, it’s fantastic when produce reflects the year that was, even one that was hotter than it

with Anita McPherson ever has been before. The Portuguese varietals used to make Pfeiffer’s Classic Tawny must love living and growing in Rutherglen, ripening under that hot summer sun. This good looking wine has a deep amber colour and a heady aroma which pops with sugar and spice and a touch of vanilla. This is a slightly drier style of Tawny which only accentuates its fruit and nut character, hinting at cherry fruit and punchy with oaky spice, yet lingering for a wonderfully long time in the mouth. It’s a wine carefully made by blending parcels of various ages to achieve just the right balance. And it tastes like every year was good for these lucky grapes.

This Day in History, 1872 A HAWKER named Higgins was held up and robbed by two men at Tarrawingee. He was camping at the time near the Red Lion Hotel. Hawker robbing seemed to be all the rage at the time, with well known hawker James Gloster held up twice in the same month. Gloster would later be held up by the Kelly Gang in 1878.

Broccolini® chorizo pizza BROCCOLINI® is a mix of broccoli and Chinese kale, and has a mild, peppery flavour that becomes sweeter when cooked. Broccolini® is recognisable by its loose florets and tender stems, and contains potassium for a happy heart, immunity-boosting vitamin C and betacarotene for healthy skin. For information and recipe inspiration, check out www.perfection.com.au. Method Place a large flat tray into the oven. Preheat the oven and tray to 220°C fan forced. Combine the passata, chipotle chilli and sauce, 1 tbsp of olive oil, 1 tbsp of lemon juice with salt and pepper in a small food processor. Process until well combined.

Mix 1 tbsp of oil, the remaining lemon juice and green onions together. Set both aside. Heat the remaining oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat. Add chorizo and sauté for 3-4 minutes until light golden. Add the Broccolini® and sauté for a further 1 minute. Spread the passata mixture over the pizza bases. Top with chorizo and Broccolini® mixture. Place onto the hot tray and bake for 5-7 minutes until the base is crisp around the edges. Sprinkle over the mozzarella and bake for a further 2-3 minutes until melted. Spoon over green onion mixture, season with pepper and serve.

TECH & SCIENCE

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ EQUAL AND OPPOSITE: Precisely why our universe contains something rather than nothing is a puzzle scientists are still piecing together, but even if they never figure it out, I for one am glad to exist.

It’s all an anti-matter of fact YOUR mother should never have given birth to you. Don’t take it personally, mine shouldn’t have given birth to me either. In fact, the universe as we know it shouldn’t exist. Instead of all the galaxies, stars, and planets - as well as marvels on Earth like the Sphinx and Mt Everest - all that should actually exist is a sea of bland radiation. At least, that’s what the standard model of particle physics tells us. According to the model, during the first moments of the big bang matter and antimatter were created in equal amounts. The problem is, matter and antimatter don’t play together nicely in

the sandpit and should have annihilated one another upon contact within these first moments, leaving nothing behind. The reason for this is that antimatter, as the name suggests, holds equal and opposite properties to matter. A hydrogen atom, for instance, contains a positively charged proton, and a negatively charged electron, while an anti-hydrogen atom contains a negatively charged antiproton and a positively charged positron (antielectron). When two such atoms collide, they effectively cancel each other out, resulting in annihilation as well as a significant output of energy relative to their mass.

You may be inclined to think that this ‘standard model’ sounds like a whole lot of nonsense, but the applications of particle physics and the quantum field theory that is it’s framework, have yielded us technological breakthroughs that we use every day. Computers, fiber optics, smartphones, gps - all of these things are a big part of the bedrock of modern day society, and they rely upon the accuracy of quantum level physics to work. Simply put, the fact that you can type a text on your smartphone means you shouldn’t have a smartphone to begin with, nor should you be around to care that you don’t. But don’t be alarmed, that’s obvi-

ously wrong - you’re alive, your smartphone won’t explode. The big question is, why is it wrong? The answer lies in the properties of antimatter, or perhaps it’s whereabouts. Scientists have two main hypotheses, and large question marks surround both. The first is that some matter and antimatter managed to escape collision during the big bang, resulting in pockets of the universe that predominantly contain matter (like our neck of the woods), and pockets that contain antimatter. The problem is, their observations thus far don’t indicate this. They’re yet to find anti-planets

and as far as they can tell, antimatter seems exceedingly rare. Which leads to the second hypothesis - that potential disparities in the decay of heavy particles versus heavy anti-particles resulted in more matter than antimatter being created during the big bang. At present, this seems the more likely scenario, even if it does fly in the face of the standard model, and is a focus of experiments being conducted with the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. It’s hoped that the processing of the data from these experiments will yield results in the next three to four years, and may well fill in some big blanks as to how we came to be.

Renovation show makes a comeback CHANNEL CHAT

THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS:

SHOW: Changing Rooms CHANNEL: WIN TIME: Wednesday, 7.30pm

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Netflix, streaming) The final episodes of this quirky sitcom – one of my favourites – recently dropped, and feature some great moments, from Titus scamming his way into a Broadway role to Kimmy getting recognition for her creative endeavours.

with Kylie Wilson WHEN it comes to something as personal as your home, handing over control of how your space will look, function and feel is definitely a daunting prospect. That is essentially the premise behind Changing Rooms, returning to our screens this week after being a popular hit show several years ago on Australian screens. In the show, now hosted by Natalie Bassingthwaite, cou-

ples swap their house keys and trust family, neighbours or best friends with their most prized possession, their homes. With the help of designers Tim Leveson, Jane Thomson, Naomi Findlay and Chris Carroll, each couple then transforms a chosen space into something new over five days, which will hopefully be to the taste of their friends or family. While home DIY enthusiasts

In The Long Run (Tuesday, about 9:50pm, ABC2) This fun new British sitcom features Idris Elba (who also created the show) and Bill Bailey, and explores life in 1980s London. Adam Hills: The Last Leg (Various timeslots, ABC) I’ve always been a fan of Adam Hills’ personable brand of TV hosting, and this show is a hilarious look at current events.

◆ NEW CREW: The faces of the new series of Changing Rooms – Naomi Findlay, Chris Carroll, Changing Rooms - Naomi, Chris, Nat, Tim and Jane.

and amateur decorators can find plenty of inspiration in shows such as this, the real drawcard is seeing the reaction of the home-

owners to their newly renovated space. This is true whether you’re getting a hefty dose of schaden-

freude while they are shocked by a garish design feature, or feeling all warm and fuzzy when you see their tears of joy.

If you’re a renovation show junkie, or even just after some new home décor ideas, this show will be right up your alley.
