IN the Aboriginal community of Maningrida, heart of Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory, Wangaratta teacher Mason Scholes, or ‘Wakadj’ as he is also known, discovered a passion for the Indigenous community, their stories and culture...and 46 new species of spiders. “You get a skin name when you get to the community - the Kunibidji people call me Wakadj, whereas the Burarra and Kuninjku speaking people call me Ngarridj,” Mason said. “Something that’s really special about going to the Northern Territory is that there isn’t an ‘us and them’ mentality, white people are called Balanda, but we’re all just people living, learning and achieving together.” One of those achievements was the discovery of 46 new species of spiders. “I had been a ranger at Mt Buffalo and a teacher and when I got to Maningrida in 2003, the secondary school had just been set up, before that there were some extension studies for students to do but there wasn’t really a secondary program,” Mason said. “We had to develop a new curriculum around what was going to interest students but also enable them to com-
plete their Northern Territory Certificate of Education. “One of those had to be a sciencebased subject and I got thrown science and asked ‘what are you going to do?’ “Naturally I looked around at good role models, leaders in the community and exciting things to do, and I linked up with the local Djelk rangers straight away. “During university, I completed a survey of spiders in the Warby Ranges, so I got my new students to investigate spiders outside the classroom.” Mason’s students found 18 new species of spiders in the first year alone, and when they researched spiders on one of the floodplains, it led to not only the discovery of a new species of tarantula, but the most densely populated area in the world for tarantulas, with a possible 25,000 calling it home. Over the course of the teaching program, a total of 46 new species were found and led to Mason winning the Northern Territory Secondary Teaching Award, being a finalist in the BHP Billiton Science Teaching Award (both in 2006) and winning the Eureka Prize for Science in 2007.

How to discuss euthanasia EUTHANASIA of our pets is undoubtedly the most difficult decision we make as pet owners. This process can be even more complicated when there are young children involved. ◆ EXOTIC MIXTURE: A mix of native and exotic flowering plants can be good pot companions.
Potted plant companions MANY people enjoy the simple pleasure of fresh cut flowers in the home. Another alternative, which is much more long-lasting, is to plant up a pot of colourful plants. Flying Duck Estate 2015 Shiraz BEFORE a recent holiday up north we did the obligatory research to find out all the best places to eat, collecting newspaper clippings and reviewing the usual print and online guides. With bookings already in place for a few it was great to sit down, relax and enjoy, finding some met expectations, some surpassed their promise and others were a little disappointing. A busy little Japanese bar was a breath of fresh air while a quieter chef’s hat contender overcharged and under-delivered, but the standout was a hidden gem we wouldn’t have found without the recommendation of a local. It delivered on all counts, but especially when it came to a nuanced understanding of flavours. On our return it was back to home cooking, the barbecue and a bottle of Flying Duck Estate Shiraz. Hailing from the King Valley, the 2015 Shiraz was fermented on skins to extract its deep red colour before being matured in French and American oak. It has a vibrant and spicy aroma with rich cherry and plum fruit, lifted by a zing of black pepper. There’s more plum and berry fruits in the flavour, balanced with

earthy oak and dusty tannins. It’s available as part of an affordable sampler pack which is ideal for those wanting to satisfy a broad range of appetites. It’s a wine that may not get a lot of hype or appear at the top of a visit list, but it’s a duck which you shouldn’t let fly under your radar.
Visit King River Estate or see www.kingriverestate.com.au Around $20
This Day in History, 1912 DISTRICT hotels were laid low when the Licenses Reduction Board put the cleaner through almost half the hotels in the area. The hotels affected by having their licences withdrawn included the Royal Oak at Carraragarmungee, the Bontherambo Hotel at Boorhaman, the Royal Oak on the corner of Rowan and Grey streets, Wangaratta, the Albion Hotel Springhurst (owned by Agnes Donovan who was also reported as being the owner of the other hotel in town - the Carrier Arms), the Albion Eldorado and the Australia, which was possibly the oldest of the hotels to be delicensed, having been a licensed house for about 50 years.

with Naturopaths Belinda McPherson and Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) ◆ OVERWHELMING: For some people, anxiety can engender stress and uncomfortable feelings when faced with everyday situations.
Suffering from anxiety FEELING the occasional anxious symptom can be a normal response to our modern busy life. But for some people their anxiety is like an overpowering force that stirs up uncomfortable feelings when faced with simple everyday situations. It is a common misconception that anxiety is just in your head. The feeling of anxiety can definitely effect how you think, but it also commonly effects your physical body. Symptoms often present as a nervous tummy, the sensation of feeling like there’s a knot in your tummy, difficulty digesting food, bowel changes, tight muscles, clenching your jaw, feeling tired at the end of the day but your brain suddenly kicks into overdrive and starts thinking about a thousand different things all at the one time (thanks brain). You might catastrophise situations, isolate yourself from social events (either not show up or make excuses), pick

He believes that the uniqueness of the spider research won him the major prizes, but said it was a team effort involving the community, local elders, other teachers, researchers such as Dr Robert Raven from the Queensland Museum and rangers. “The rangers were already doing lots of amazing research and monitoring projects that no other school really gets the opportunity to do like crocodile egg collecting, long neck turtle tracking and taking samples from buffalo for research into exotic diseases like brucellosis and tuberculosis, and foot and mouth disease,” said Mason. He and his wife, Olga, recently returned to Wangaratta to give their children the experience of growing up and being part of two very different cultures and communities. The boys, aged six and eight, found there was some adjustment to be made when they first arrived. “The boys were a bit shocked they had to wear shoes to school...they were pretty upset
about that, but they’ve settled in well now,” Mason said. “We used to spend every weekend going out hunting and fishing and getting out and about and now, they’re playing golf, basketball and Auskick, so that’s very different for them, but they love it. “I have so many fond memories of growing up in Wangaratta, being in the Scouts, going out camping, going to Mittagundi and having ‘Bracko’ (Lisa Bracken) take us out to survey sugar gliders in high school. “I love getting out into the environment Wangaratta has to offer; I love the mountains and the bush, I’ve always been passionate about them and what I got to do when I was younger drove me to want to be a ranger.” With Mason and Olga’s long-term plans are to remain here, Mason would love to take some students into the Warby-Ovens National Park, let them explore and see what they can collect. “I’d also love to work with the local Indigenous elders and leaders in the community to create a curriculum and
resources for teachers,” he said. “There’s been a lot of great work done locally since I’ve been gone, like on the Bullawah Cultural Trail, and being able to research and learn the true history of this region and how life was for the 60,000 years before we got here so a program could be developed where students go and work with the elders and then bring that back into the classroom would be great. “It would be awesome to develop a strong, lasting program of curriculum activities and ideas - maybe even from the upcoming book release (about the Bpangerang people) we could create a teacher resource to go with that and create a network for teachers about who they can contact if they want more information on our local indigenous culture. “Being out in remote Indigenous areas you meet the most amazing leaders and elders, they’re so knowledgeable and I can’t speak highly enough of them. “I’ve been very fortunate to work with them for a long time, I’ve learnt a lot and I can’t wait to do more of that here where I grew up.”

GONE FISHING
TECH & SCIENCE
◆ GREAT BAIT: Freshwater shrimp are one of the best bait that you can use for yellowbelly, redfin and Murray cod. If you are planning on keeping some for bait, they must be stored in water that is aerated.
Unsettled weather a challenge for fishing THE topic of conversation around town over the last week has been the unseasonably cold weather. The cool conditions and constant southerly winds seem to have slowed the fishing right down. Before the weather changed I had reports coming in from all over the place, with Lake Nillahcootie being the stand out fishery with quite a few people reporting good catches of yellowbelly from the bank and from boats. The good news is that the recent rainfall will provide a much needed flush of fresh water through the waterway which will be beneficial to all species, particularly the trout in the streams. Another positive is that it will be helping to keep the water in the streams cool which will be beneficial to the trout. I went to Boosey Creek at Katamatite after work early last week and caught one carp and got quite wet from showers - I didn’t think to check the weather forecast! Using worms as bait I was getting a lot of tiny nibbles, which I suspected were freshwater shrimp.
with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA I went back over there a few days later to catch some shrimp and do some fishing and it was blowing a gale. I did not catch any fish but I did manage to catch a mountain of freshwater shrimp for bait, which are being stored in aerated water until the weather warms back up. They are destined for Lake Nillahcootie! If you want to know how to catch shrimp, go to YouTube and search for “robbiefishing how to catch shrimp”. As soon as the weather settles, I predict Lake Nillahcootie will be firing still, and I also suspect that with cool, fresh water in the streams, the moment it’s warm enough for the insects to hatch the trout fishing should be very good.
with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ IF THIS, THEN THAT: Algorithms are the bedrock of a computer program, but the precise meaning of the term has become a little murky in recent years.
What exactly are algorithms? IN an era of social media, self-driving cars, smart-phones, apps, artificial intelligence and machine learning, there’s one term that gets bandied around a lot - algorithms. If you’ve been following technology news you’ll know that algorithms play a role in virtually everything we do online - from using programs at work, to sharing posts on Facebook, to consuming media on sites like Youtube. But what are algorithms, and how do they work? In this article I thought we’d take a look at these mysterious things that have come to govern many aspects of our lives, and discuss some of the controversy surrounding them. We live in a world where computers are only vaguely understood, even though they permeate every moment of our lives. But there is one area of computer science where anyone can understand the basics of what’s going on. That area of computer science is called programming. Programming isn’t glamorous work, but it’s the foundation of all computer software, from Microsoft Office to automated phone callers. And even if your knowledge of programming stems solely from bad 80’s and 90’s films, you probably don’t need anyone to explain to you what a programmer does. A programmer writes code for a computer, and the computer follows the instruction of that code to perform tasks or solve problems. Well, in the world of computer science, an algorithm is just a fancy word for code. Any set of instructions that tells a computer how to solve problems is an algorithm, even if the task is super easy. When you turn on your computer, it follows a set of “how to turn on” instructions. That’s an algorithm at work. When a NASA computer uses raw radio wave data to render a photograph of outer space, that’s also an algorithm at work. The word “algorithm” can be used to describe any set of in-
structions, even outside the realm of computing. For example, your method for sorting cutlery in a drawer is an algorithm, as is the way you mow your lawn. The controversy surrounding algorithms Speech-to-text generally uses machine learning, but no one talks about the speech-to-text “algorithm” because there is an objectively correct answer every human can instantly recognize. No one cares about “how” the computer figures out what you said or whether it’s machine learning or not. We just care whether the machine got the right answer. But other applications of machine learning don’t have the benefit of having a “right” answer. That’s why algorithms have become a regular subject of conversation in the media. An algorithm for sorting a list alphabetically is just a way of accomplishing a defined task. But an algorithm like Google’s for somehow “ranking the best websites for a search” or YouTube’s for “recommending the best video” is much vaguer and doesn’t accomplish a defined task. People can debate whether that algorithm is producing the results it should, and people will have different opinions on that. When politics gets involved, the question surrounding the way software is filtering content for end users gets even murkier. Recently, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has declared his resistance toward certain politicians’ insistence that Facebook’s algorithms should play a heavier role in determining what is ‘true’ in a political sense - which is certainly something I was glad to hear. Just how long that lasts remains to be seen. Still, our society is well and truly tied to algorithms now, and I think it is of vital importance that everyone has a fundamental understanding of what they are.
