By SHANE DOUTHIE ANYTIME an individual is selected to represent their country in a world championship it’s a great honour, especially when you are a 15 year old secondary school student like Declan McClellan from Wangaratta. He is one of 10 Dragon Boat paddlers form North East Victoria who will compete at the 14th IDBF World Dragon Boat Championships in Pattaya, Thailand from August 20 to 25. The paddlers come from Brave Hearts Dragon Boat Club, Warriors Albury Wodonga Dragon Boat Club and Mt Beauty Dragon Boat Club. Dragon boat racing began more than 2000 years ago in China when a group of superstitious people believed that the boat racing would ensure prosperous and bountiful crops. The race has come to symbolise both man’s struggle against nature and his fight against dangerous enemies. Declan is one of eight members of Brave Hearts club in the Australian Aurora Team, proving themselves to be among the top paddlers/drummers and sweeps in the country. He is joined by fellow Brave Hearts juniors (under 18) Ella Varman, Charlotte Jones and Matthew Chapman, and seniors Diane Edmondson, Maxine Reid, Berna Cudars and Brendan Maher, along with Kerry Keil (Warriors Dragon Boat Club), and Lisa Smallbone (Mt Beauty). Declan said he was inspired by his ‘Nan’ and ‘Pop’ to take up the sport and is now in his fifth season of paddling the long decorative boats. “My Nan and Pop used to be members of Brave Hearts,” Declan said.

Obesity in your pet OVERFEEDING our pets can be all too easy. Whether we give them extra treats during the day, or feed them large home cooked meals; too much food, or the wrong type can lead to health problems with your cat or dog. Obesity amongst cats and dogs is a huge problem in Australia. Dogs are more likely to be overweight than cats, with 41 per cent found to be overweight or obese in a survey by the RSPCA. Having an overweight pet decreases their quality of life and shortens their lifespan. Overall, they will end up leading a less energetic, playful and happy life. Just like in humans, being overweight predisposes pets to several diseases including heart and liver disease and diabetes. Carrying that extra weight around also means that your pet’s joints have much more strain on them. This predisposes them to osteoarthritis, which decreases movement in the joint and causes pain. How do I know if my dog is overweight? Simply putting our pets on the scales may not be an accurate representation of body condition. A body condition score, which takes into account weight and size, is a much more accurate representation. In an ideal body condition score, you should be able to easily feel your pet’s

PET CORNER THIS week's pet of the week at Wangaratta RSPCA is Walter, a domestic medium short hair cat, who is ginger/white in colour. To see more animals up for adoption at the Wangaratta RSPCA visit the shelter in Connell Street or phone (03) 5722 2874.

with Amy Brown BVSc, Veterinarian ribs when you run your hands over them, but not see the ribs through the coat. When looking from above, a waist should also be visible where their abdomen tucks in slightly. How do I get my pet to lose weight? Ensuring that your pet is on the correct diet is the first step to achieving the correct weight. Veterinary pet food diets have a feeding plan on the bag; make sure you are only feeding to your pet’s weight, which may be fed over one or split over two meals daily. If your pet is very overweight, then a specially formulated veterinary weight loss diet may be indicated. Cutting down meals sizes initially and eliminating treats is a good start to your pet’s weight loss journey. Also ensuring that your pet is getting enough physical exercise is important, with regular walks for dogs and plenty of environmental stimulation for both dogs and cats to help increase their activity. It’s up to you to make sure your pet can have a healthy, happy life. Always check with your vet if you have concerns about your pet’s weight and they will help get you started.

◆ A view from the top – looking down on the Food Garden and River Walk and (Inset) a map of the Australian Botanic Gardens Shepparton.

Australian Botanic Gardens Shepparton EACH winter our family has a get together in the Goulburn Valley to celebrate several birthdays. An extra treat for me is to visit the Australian Botanic Gardens in Shepparton whilst I’m in the area. This garden sits just south of Shepparton at Honeysuckle Rise, the site of the old Kialla landfill. The garden is relatively new, and some sections are still in development. Although different in style to the traditional botanic gardens it is no less fascinating. It’s a contemporary ecological garden, in tune with its surroundings and showcasing Australian native plants. Planning is evident in the design of the Australian Botanic Gardens Shepparton, using some of the principles of the Cranbourne Botanic Gardens. A huge landscaped mound is the centrepiece, with a lookout at the top. The views over

the floodplain, wetlands and garden below are beautiful. There are walking tracks, bike paths, areas to sit and relax and excellent signage. The garden itself is laid out in themed sections. At the entrance is the Turtle Garden – a lovely contemplative space with paving, recycled car tyres and curved seating. There is also a Children’s Garden, Weaving Garden and Zig Zag path leading down towards the wetlands. Each section of the garden incorporates water wise principles, local and recycled materials and artwork. I particularly like visiting the gardens for inspiration. With the conditions in the Goulburn Valley even more challenging than the North East, it is great for sparking ideas on what can work in our own gardens. From bullet-proof plant-

ing combinations to retaining wall options to use of reclaimed materials in sculptures - the options are endless. As for many community gardens, the majority of daily management and horticultural labour here is carried out by volunteers. The Friends of the Australian Botanic Gardens Shepparton (FABGS) are active with fundraising, propagating plants and many hours of maintenance work. They have a terrific website (www.fabs.org.au) and Facebook page. We chatted to some friendly volunteers on our last visit and their passion and dedication are clear. The ongoing development of the site is a real credit to them. I highly recommend a visit to the Australian Botanic Gardens next time you’re in Shepparton. It’s open all day, every day.

Michelini Wines Devils Creek 2019 Pinot Grigio WHEN it comes to predicting the weather, it seems we all fancy ourselves as meteorologists these days, with access to websites, satellite images and data from all over the world. We can zoom in and scroll through and see what’s coming our way, and view rain predictions for our towns by the hour to the millimetre, for the next three days. But weather it such a dynamic beast that even the real meteorologists struggle to get it right, finding themselves damned if they don’t warn us what’s coming, and damned if they do and it turns out to be a fizzer. When it comes to choosing a wine you can spend hours on detailed research, or you can keep it simple and choose a variety you like, from a region where it thrives, from a winemaker you know. Generally it’s a formula which delivers a positive result. If you like Pinot Grigio, wines from the Alpine Valley and are on a budget, then Devils Creek Pinot Grigio makes a logical choice, from the pocket-friendly range produced by Michelini Wines. It’s clean and crisp with a bright pear and perky floral aroma. It’s fresh and cleansing with pear flavour and a citrus lift, mak-

This Day in History, 1889 IT was decided at a meeting held on August 14, 1889 to form a brass band in Wangaratta. Actually, it was more a revival of a previous band which had lapsed than a brand new initiative. The modern city band can trace its ancestry directly back to this meeting held at the Theatre Royal, with Mr Pinkerton in the chair.

The role of naturopathy in infections and recovery ECHINACEA, vitamin C, probiotics these are the popular ‘kids on the block’ supplements when it comes to infections. Most of you will have them in your medicine cupboard, next to the ibuprofen, even if you ‘don’t believe in naturopathy’. Whilst Naturopaths have always used herbs, food and nutrients to prevent or treat acute infections, I think the place naturopathy really shines is in post-viral symptoms. These are the symptoms that linger after the infection has been said to be resolved and keep you feeling ‘just a bit off ’ to ‘quite unwell, despite there being no medical reason. The cough you still have a month after that cold, the low energy reserve three years after glandular fever was

diagnosed, the recurrent thrush or IBS you developed after that parasite you picked up in Asia (stool sample all clear by the way), the tinnitus you developed after your last ear infection… Herbs and the naturopathic paradigm are outstanding when it comes to convalescence and implementing a complete recovery in a depleted system. Our supplements are often aimed at supporting the organ or system that is faulting, rather than just killing off the infecting organism. This is why I always say that naturopathy and medical management can be used in conjunction with each other. Let’s use the example of a stubborn sinus infection. Antibiotics might kill the bacterial infection, but three weeks later you still

have fatigue, sinus pain and mucous. A naturopath will use ‘alterative’ herbs to drain and detox the glands, ‘trophorestoratives and astringents’ to tone the inflamed mucous membranes, diet to reduce the inflammatory load and mucous production, and probiotics and immune adaptogens to improve the resistance to another infection. So, it is not just about killing off an infection, but about making the whole environment stronger and less susceptible to recurrent infection. Having said that, the response of herbal medicine in active infection, especially in children can be powerful. Conjunctivitis, vulvinitis, otitis, glandular fever, sinusitis, laryngitis, coughs, tonsillitis, UTIs, can all respond well to naturopathic care when a trained practitioner is involved.

Young dragon master to wear green and gold Ŷ From page 1 “Nan had breast cancer and started with them and Pop followed but she doesn’t paddle any more, although Pop still trains. “They ended up joining a club (Dragon Masters) in Melbourne so I followed them down there to compete. “I paddled there for two or three seasons with Pop and then I joined the Yarra River Dragons because they were more my age.” After several years of travel for his sport Declan decided to return to his home club. “Clubs only train for an hour and it used to take me three and half hours to get there and another three and half hours to return,” he said. Declan had no real sporting background before paddling, “I used to just hang around with mates”, but thanks to following the lead of his grandmother, he is now about to don the green and gold. “You don’t have to be fit to start, you

can just do it to socialise,” he said. “I just enjoy it. We have competitions all over Victoria and the national championships are held in a different state each year.” Declan has already competed at four national titles in Adelaide, Albury, Canberra and Brisbane but has never been outside of Australia. As a member of the national team his training regime has ramped up markedly and last week he had three training sessions in Albury plus one in Melbourne. Kellie Jones from Brave Hearts Dragon Boat Club said the entire Aurora team had been in serious training for the world titles. “Our regional Auroras have been training hard together on Gateway Lakes for the past 11 months as well as working on their own land fitness and benchmarking; training in Melbourne with Australian coach, Serghei Cucsa, and attending their specific team camps,” she said. “Each paddler qualified in the initial

round of benchmarking for fitness then completed intense boot camps in Sydney and Melbourne attended by paddlers from around Australia. It has been a long, hard and very rewarding road thus far.” The Auroras will compete against more than 30 countries, racing 2000m, 1000m, 500m and 200m distances. Brave Hearts Dragon Boat Club was formed in 2006 after a group of breast cancer survivors built their own dragon boat at Riverina Institute of TAFE, Albury Campus with the help of volunteers and teachers. The boat hangs in the club’s shed and is the pride of the fleet and is mainly used these days for ceremonial purposes. Brave Hearts Dragon Boat Club welcomes any gender over 10 years of age while current members range from 11 to 80 years of age. For more information visit the Brave Hearts Dragon Boat Club website or the Mt Beauty Dragon Boat Club Facebook page.

The athletes have to be super fit for this endurance sport to Ski Fast and Shoot Clean. You’ll see our Olympic Shadow Team members in Competition at these selection races. NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ THE OTHER HAND: Advances in robotic dexterity and and AI learning are producing results when it comes to the difficult task of teaching robots to navigate our complex and random world.

Not-so-distant future technologies SINCE homo sapiens first disovered how to bang two rocks together to extract hard-shell fruits and nuts, we’ve been on an ever evolving quest to invent the next best gizmo that will make our lives easier, safer, or better in some form or fashion. This week, I thought we’d take a look at some not-so-distant future technologies that could revolutionise our way of life. Robotic dexterity We’ve all heard about the roboapocalypse - the notion that robots will eventually take all our jobs. But for all the talk, industrial robots are still clumsy and inflexible. A robot can repeatedly pick up a component on an assembly line with amazing precision and without ever getting bored - but if the object is moved at all the machine will fumble ineptly or grasp at thin air. But while a robot can’t yet be programmed to figure out how to grasp any object just by looking at it, as people do, it can now learn to manipulate the object on its own through virtual trial and error, or AI learning. One such project is Dactyl, a robot that taught itself to flip a toy building block in its fingers. Dactyl, developed by San Francisco

nonprofit OpenAI, consists of an offthe-shelf robot hand surrounded by an array of lights and cameras. Using what’s known as reinforcement learning, neural-network software learns how to grasp and turn the block within a simulated environment before the hand tries it out for real. The software conducts experiments, randomly at first, strengthening connections within the network over time as it gets closer to the programmed goal. It usually isn’t possible to transfer that type of virtual practice to the real world, because things like friction or the varied properties of different materials are so difficult to simulate. The OpenAI team got around this by adding randomness to the virtual training, giving the robot a proxy for the messy nature of reality. Advanced fusion and fission reactors are edging closer to reality. New nuclear reactors have gained traction in the past year with the promise to make nuclear power safer and cheaper. Among the new designs are generation IV fission reactors, an evolution of traditional, small modular reactors; and the much vaunted fusion reactors, a technology that has

seemed just out of reach for decades now. Developers of generation IV fission designs, such as Canada’s Terrestrial Energy and Washington-based TerraPower, have entered into research and development partnerships with utility companies in the U.S., aiming for grid supply by the 2020s. Custom cancer vaccines In the field of medicine come strides in custom made cancer vaccines. The treatment incites the body’s natural defenses to destroy only cancer cells by identifying mutations unique to each tumor. Scientists are on the cusp of commercializing the first personalized cancer vaccine. If it works as hoped, the vaccine, which triggers a person’s immune system to identify a tumor by its unique mutations, could effectively shut down many types of cancers. By using the body’s natural defenses to selectively destroy only tumor cells, the vaccine, unlike conventional chemotherapies, limits damage to healthy cells. The attacking immune cells could also be vigilant in spotting any stray cancer cells after the initial treatment.

THINGS are busy across the snow resorts this week after massive snowfalls over the last week. The Village Bowl comes alive on Thursday nights with a fantastic Nightshow and Firework Spectacular. Come along for 7pm kickoff to watch the night show and have the kids entertained by Pete the Snow Dragon. Next Thursday, August 22, Falls Creek will showcase cross country ski racing at its most exciting in the invitational Night Sprints which will feature the best Australian skiers against elite international skiers who are out here for the Hoppet. Starting at 6pm in the Village Bowl at the top of the Gully Chairlift, the sprints involve a series of knock-out rounds leading to men’s and women’s finals at around 6.45pm. IT's a busy time at Mt Hotham this weekend with the National Disabled Wintersport day on Friday along with the Hotham Banked Slalom 2019 which continues the next day. Hotham Banked Slalom was reintroduced to Hotham last year as a friendly competition to ride out the banked slalom track down Heavenly Valley's Gunbarrel run.
