Luke’s love of regional education shines WANGARATTA born and raised Luke Surace is excited to bring his education program, The Academy, back to his roots next year. Currently operating in Essendon and Geelong, but set to come to Wangaratta in February 2021, The Academy is a full-time education program that provides an alternative to standard year 11 and 12 schooling with a contextualised curriculum that is centred on AFL. The Academy’s curriculum is based off the VCAL system, while also including a certificate three and sport and recreation program and is co-directed by ex-AFL player Alex Rance. Co-director Luke Surace spoke to the Wangaratta Chronicle about his journey to creating this program and why it’s important for local communities. “My background is education; I worked at Wangaratta GOTAFE and started my career there in the design department where I grew in interest in learning models and design,” he said. “I was recognised and approached to work on a government project in Melbourne, where I further developed my skills and interest in those learning models and how people learn, which was then rolled out across Tafes in Melbourne. “I started a company in the retail/fashion sector where we would go in and design learning for staff; at that point I’d been friends with Alex for a long time. “About three years ago he thought about retiring and we were on a trip from the states when he said he’d miss the mentorship from other players and this was when talk of mental health issues was popping up in the AFL space. “It seemed early draftees’ physically prepared for AFL environment but not mentally prepared.”

Christmas Eye CHRISTMAS Eye is a colloquial expression attributed to a condition that appears to be quite specific to the alpine and sub-alpine areas of south eastern Australia. It is by no means restricted to animals and a similar condition has been described in humans dating back to the gold rush in the 1880s. The condition appears from November through to February thus the name Christmas Eye. It is manifest by extreme eye pain and irritation almost always in one eye only. The conjunctiva becomes red and inflamed with a lot of ocular discharge. Affected animals usually rub the affected eye with their paws or along the ground in an attempt to gain relief. The affected eye is squinted (tightly closed) and often examination is impossible without sedation or anaesthesia due to the severity of the pain. As the condition progresses the clear part of the eyeball (cornea) becomes opaque as an ulcer progressively enlarges to eventually encompass the entire cornea.

with Andrew Colson, BVCs (hons), Ovens and Kiewa Veterinary Hospital The condition is medically known as unilateral kerato-conjunctivitis. Although not proven, it is thought the condition is initiated by contact with small flying arthropods, probably insects which either inject a poisonous sting or have a very irritant body coating (possibly a secretion on their body hairs) which is extremely irritant to mammal’s conjunctivae. Occasionally small insects or parts of them (legs/antennae/wings) are found when examining these inflamed eyes but often no inciting cause is ever found. The condition is rapidly progressive and requires medical attention. Topical antibiotics usually halt the progression of the ulcer but recalcitrant cases require surgical intervention. If you animal is suffering a closed, painful and discharging eye that appears to be worsening it could be Christmas eye and you should seek immediate veterinary attention.

◆ LIONS AND TIGERS: Tiger orchids emerge in bright yellows and browns in spring each year. PHOTO: Belinda Harrison

Tiger and greenhood orchids DURING a recent walk along trails in the Warby-Ovens National Park, I came across a couple of tiny flowers, one of which I mistook for odd-coloured violets. They both turned out to be orchids and on further investigation, I learned that the one that had reminded me of the violets was actually the Diuris sulphurea - also known as the Hornet or Tiger orchid. Endemic to Australia and with gorgeous, bright yellow and brown flowers which are seen between August and December, these orchids can have up to seven flowers (which are only a few centimetres wide each) on a single stem, although the stem itself can be as high as 50cm. Tiger orchids are tuberous perennial herbs, which means that although they die back in autumn and winter, they grow and bloom again over the spring and summer from their rootstock. They have sepals which func-

tion as protection for the flower in bud and support the petals when in bloom - an egg-shaped dorsal sepal which often leans forward and lateral sepals which are turned downwards and are usually parallel to each other. The petals themselves are erect and turned backwards with an eggshaped blade on a dark brown stalk. The labellum (the part of the orchid which attracts insects and acts as a landing platform for them while they pollinate the flower) has three lobes; the centre one is spade-shaped and the side two are egg-shaped with the narrower end towards the base. Tiger orchids grow in all states of Australia except for Western Australia and the Northern Territory, and often grow alongside Diuris pardina - the leopard orchid - and sometimes form hybrids with that genus. The second orchid I came across had a green outer and brownish

‘tongue’ inside and I found it to be a Pterostylis curta or Blunt Greenhood. At barely 3cm tall, you could have easily missed them if you weren’t keeping a close eye out. Blunt Greenhoods are terrestrial orchids and are usually evergreen, keeping their leaves for a year or more. Unlike the tiger orchids, they only have a single flower on their stems and the dorsal sepal and lateral petals are fused together to create a blunt ‘hood’ while the lateral sepals are joined together at the base of the flower and fan out on either side of the hood. The group we saw were clumped profusely together, which can happen sometimes as the plants grow from tubers, but with their flowering season from July to October, you may not see them for much longer this year, so I’d recommend taking a trip to ‘the Warbys’ and do a little spotting for yourself.

OUT & ABOUT

DeBortoli Family Winemakers 17 Trees Pinot Grigio 2020 IT was not all that long ago when concepts of climate change and sustainability were considered by many businesses as the concerns of a minority, made up of radicals, greenies and hippies. These days we’ve come to realise they should be at the forefront of everyone’s mind and at the top of the agenda if we wish to preserve our lifestyle and our precious planet. So it’s great to see DeBortoli embrace eco-friendly innovations and create a sustainably produced wine range which comes with a collaborative commitment to plant one tree for every six sold. They’ve partnered with not-forprofit Trillion Trees to plant native trees for a sustainable future - in an effort designed to rebuild bushland lost during the last bushfire season. Importantly for the consumer it demonstrates it’s possible to do good whilst not comprising on taste. The 17 Trees name comes from De Bortoli’s first sustainability project undertaken over 10 years ago to plant 17 trees for each company vehicle, to offset the carbon effects of its fleet. But let’s talk about the wine and they had me at Pinot Grigio.

with Anita McPherson

It has a light straw colour and sings with fruity, honeysuckle florals and citrus aromas. The taste is fresh and crisp, quite mineral at first with lemon fruit, but graduating to become more melon-like in flavour. It makes ideal drinking in warmer weather and would match any white meat or seafood dishes, although it’s also vegan friendly if you’re that way inclined. I didn’t really need a reason to drink more, but I’ve got one now.

Available from local stockists or visit www.debortoli.com.au. Bottle price: about $20.

This Day in History, 1929 AFTER numerous accidents and near misses between motorists and trains at the Rowan Street level crossing, wig wags were finally installed and operating on this day in 1929. They were operated by the

passage of a train over a switch which activated a bell which rang, and a red disc on a pendulum which swung to and fro. Workmen’s tricycles could pass over the switch without activating the alarm.

THE MOSAIC TRAIL, MYRTLEFORD

Trail mix - fun walks in the sun WITH the weather warming up and locals and visitors alike eager to get out into the North East and explore, now is the perfect time to take a trip to Myrtleford and follow the Mosaic Trail. You can start the trail at Rotary Park, just off the Great Alpine Road and follow the 2km sealed, flat track to Apex Park off Apex Lane near Buffalo River Road (or vice versa) by bike, foot, scooter or even wheelchair. Winding along the banks of the Ovens River, you might be distracted by the call of an unusual bird or a skink

sunning itself on a fallen branch or warm rock and it’s worth taking a moment to try and spot the more elusive creatures - you just might find something else hiding on a rock or tree. If you don’t want to return the way you came (and see what you might have missed the first time) you can continue along Apex Lane, Standish Street and Lewis Avenue, to complete a full loop back through town via the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail. There are more than 70 mosaic locations to enchant and delight children and adults so the trails are per-

fect to visit time and again. You can even complete an online Mosaic Trail Treasure Hunt (which starts at Rotary Park) and answer the questions as you go, or print them out and fill them in once you get back home. There are sure to be some heated battles as you scamper along to be the ‘first to find’ - and the kids won’t even realise they’re getting some all important exercise for the day. You can find more information and the online treasure hunt at myrtlefordmosaictrail.com.au.

ria myself I really understood that you don’t get these opportunities so I’m really excited to bring this to Wangaratta. “There are similar opportunities that exist in the city but are really hard to access and we’re seeing that 20-30 per cent of our students come from regional communities but relocate to attend our program. “We want to open up opportunities in those areas so we’re excited to have Wangaratta as our first regional location; thanks to our connection and partnership with GOTAFE who helped us deliver the program in Essendon and Geelong.” Luke said that kids in most regional areas have a lower completion rate of year 11 and 12 as a percentage so The Academy’s learning model will “benefit those passionate about football”. “We won’t be able to reach every single kid but we definitely feel we

can offer strong support to most and a different pathway,” he said. “Every single student of ours leaves The Academy knowing the next step in their journey. “That may not be university but we have seen students go through our pathways to regional universities, Tafes, apprenticeships; which also supports businesses. “My favourite part about directing this program all comes down to graduation night. “It’s a hard thing setting up a school program from scratch but seeing proud parents in tears with their sons who weren’t “meant” to complete year 10 but have now completed year 12; those moments get us through the hard days of a business. “Knowing we supported kids who may have taken a completely different path and supported them on a journey to moving forward is priceless.”

GONE FISHING

TECH & SCIENCE

◆ SCENIC: While rivers may be flooded there are plenty of other fishing options. Lake Moodemere (pictured) is a spectacular lake to fish and can provide fun carp fishing, with a chance of yellowbelly.

Flooding good for our rivers and fish RIVERS throughout the North East aree flooded and that is excellent news because rivers depend on regular flooding to survive. The Murray cod fry in the spring time feed on microorganisms found in floodwaters, and the redgum forests along the river flats depend on flooding for a number of reasons. The redgum trees love getting their feet wet and thrive in floodwater. Best of all, the forest floor gets a good clean out, removing fallen leaves and any carbon on the ground that has built up as a result of decaying leaf litter and other forest foliage. Redgum forests that do not get a periodic flood will often see a build up of leaf litter and carbon that does not get flushed out, and then when a flood finally arrives all of the carbon washes into the water creating a toxic blackwater event, killing the fish. This has happened twice in the last 10 years in the Murray River downstream of Barmah Forest, which does not get flooded properly due to lakes Dartmouth and Hume holding back the floodwater. So while the rivers are high and unfishable right now, this flooding is critical to the long

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA term health of the rivers and should lead to better fishing opportunities down the track. In the meantime there are plenty of other options to wet a line. Lakes Moodemere, Nillahcootie, Hume, Eildon, William Hovell and Buffalo all remain fishable. Nillahcootie, Eildon and Hume have all been producing some nice yellowbelly lately, while Moodemere has been fishing OK for carp. Buffalo and William Hovell have been quiet - I have heard no reports from either. The trout streams will certainly be fishable, however the water may be a bit high and off colour in some. Drifting worms will be the best way to catch trout in these conditions. Smaller streams will be easier to fish as it may take a while for the larger rivers to settle down.

Catching some needed zzzzz... CONSIDERING the average human spends around 25 years partaking in the activity, it’s funny how little we really understand about sleep. “It’s sort of embarrassing,” Dr Michael Halassa, a neuroscientist at New York University, told LiveScience.com. “It’s obvious why we need to eat, for example, and reproduce...but it’s not clear why we need to sleep at all.” We’re vulnerable when we’re asleep, so whatever sleep does, it must be worth the risk of the brain taking itself mostly offline. There are a few theories about why we sleep, and although none of them are totally solid, a few try to explain what happens each night, pulling in research on topics ranging from cellular processes to cognition. Researchers say it does seem clear that sleep is key to the brain’s ability to reorganise itself — a feature called plasticity. Another reason sleep is hard to understand is that the brain may be doing two different things during the two major stages of sleep.

As the night wears on, sleepers cycle through non-rapid eye movement (non-REM) and rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep. Non-REM sleep is marked by slow brain waves called theta and delta waves. In contrast, the brain’s electrical activity during REM sleep looks much like it does when a person is awake, but the muscles of the body are paralysed. (If you’ve ever experienced the phenomenon called sleep paralysis, it’s because you woke from REM sleep before this paralysis ended.) Two internal biological mechanisms– circadian rhythm and homeostasis– work together to regulate when you are awake and sleep. Circadian rhythms direct a wide variety of functions from daily fluctuations in wakefulness to body temperature, metabolism, and the release of hormones. They control your timing of sleep and cause you to be sleepy at night and your tendency to wake in the morning without an alarm.

au

Local people, local places ...immerse yourself in the region j/31d56401/15-20

Sleep-wake homeostasis keeps track of your need for sleep. The homeostatic sleep drive reminds the body to sleep after a certain time and regulates sleep intensity. This sleep drive gets stronger every hour you are awake and causes you to sleep longer and more deeply after a period of sleep deprivation. How Much Sleep Do You Need? Your need for sleep and your sleep patterns change as you age, but this varies significantly across individuals of the same age. There is no magic “number of sleep hours” that works for everybody of the same age. Babies initially sleep as much as 16 to 18 hours per day, which may boost growth and development (especially of the brain). School-age children and teens on average need about 9.5 hours of sleep per night. Most adults need 7-9 hours of sleep a night, but after age 60, nighttime sleep tends to be shorter, lighter, and interrupted by multiple awakenings.
