Focused fantastic four By KYLIE WILSON EXPLORING and depicting some of the Beechworth area’s most familiar landmarks in new ways has inspired a quartet of Indigo Shire photographers. Erin Davis Hartwig, Jerun Terlaak, Scott Hartvigsen and Nat Ord - both past and present residents of Beechworth - are using their new exhibition, Four, to showcase their response to four landscapes in the Beechworth area; Mt Pilot, Murmungee Lookout, Lake Zwarberg and Lake Kerferd. They used various photographic techniques, including aerial photography, traditional landscape and fine art photography. Beechworth’s Scott Hartvigsen said the project combined his twin passions of photography and the environment. He has had “a fascination” with photography from a very young age, and has been in the industry professionally for about 20 years. Also regularly working in the environmental field, he said it was a logical progression to always have a camera with him while at work, and said that helped fuel his love of photography. Among his favourite things to photograph are dilapidated or crumbling old buildings, to help capture images of them before they are lost forever, and he often returns to the same spot to capture the differences over time.

THE Yellow Digital Report has revealed that when it comes to online shopping, men are spending on average $450 more than women a year. Despite this, men were found less likely to shop online than women (91 per cent compared with 87 per cent). The report by Yellow Pages, based on a survey of 1500 adults, found that while women were found more likely to than men to purchase clothing, accessories and shoes (69 per cent and 52 per cent respectively), books (46 per cent and 34 per cent respectively) and take-away food (39 per cent vs 33 per cent respectively), men favoured bigger-ticket items such as electronic equipment and computer hardware, which explains why they are spending more. The report also found that Aussies are continuing to embrace digital in the home, with 35 per cent using one or more smart-home activation devices, while almost two thirds (63 per cent) of households are using streaming services.

Scott said he had thoroughly enjoyed being part of the exhibition. “It’s very interesting, the different images that we’ve captured,” Scott said. “When we brought the images together, it was like, ‘wow, they were very different’,” he added. “It’s also been a great thing to do, just to collaborate with other photographers in town.” He said his favourite spot to work out while he was putting his shots together for the exhibition was Lake Zwarberg, because of its “beautiful old ghost gums” and the fact it was a former mining site. “It’s quite an eerie old spot,” Scott said. A photographer of over two decades’ standing, as well as a graphic artist and web designer, Jerun Terlaak said he jumped at the chance to be involved in the project. Some of his most striking images in the exhibition were captured using drone technology, offering a vastly different perspective of familiar local landmarks. “I really enjoyed it – you get some really unexpected angles, you normally wouldn’t get from the ground,” he said. “There’s a lot of colours, patterns and little details.” “It’s a combination of technical skills and creative skills,” he said of the use of drones in photography. Jerun said that as well as the photos all having been taken and printed in the region, the frames themselves are also uniquely local – made by a North East craftsman from timber salvaged in the area, including pep-

WE are in the midst of foaling season, and although awaiting the birth of your foal brings much excitement and anticipation, it can also be a very stressful experience. The first 24 hours are critical for foal survival, and therefore it is important to be aware of the normal developmental stages and when to intervene. Failure of passive transfer is one of the most common disorders in foals, greatly increasing the risk of neonatal infection. The mare’s placenta provides no transfer of immunity, and therefore ingestion of colostrum (the first milk) is critical in the early stages to ensure adequate antibody intake. The foal is capable of absorbing antibodies via specialised cells within the intestine, however as these cells become replaced by mature cells, absorption decreases, and ceases within 24-36 hours post birth. After this stage, if the foal has not received adequate antibodies via colostrum, a plasma transfu-

permint gum salvaged from Stanley. Like Scott, Jerun said Lake Zwarberg was his favourite spot of the four locations to photograph. “It looks so otherwordly, especially from the sky,” he said. He said that as photography can be such an individual pursuit, he loved working with others in the collaborative exhibition. “To collaborate with others is just fantastic,” he said, adding that photographing the local spots had whet his appetite to explore and further photograph the North East. The exhibition, also a featured part of the Beechworth Arts Council’s Spring Arts Festival, is located at the Old Stone Hall, 7 Church St, Beechworth and runs through until December 2, with opening hours from 10am-2pm Thursday- Sunday. sion may be required. Signs of inadequate transfer of immunity may include weakness, increased laying around, failure to suckle and rapid breathing. If failure of passive transfer is suspected in your foal, a blood test can be performed to assess their antibody levels. Other issues we may find in our neonatal foals include limb deformities, urine dribbling from the naval (associated with urine accumulation in the abdomen rather than the bladder) and meconium impaction (failure to pass first faeces). Ideally, a healthy newborn foal should be standing within the hour, urinating within the first 8-12 hours and starting to pass meconium within 30 minutes. If you are concerned about any of the above conditions, do not hesitate to contact your vet.

◆ FEED FIT FOR A KING: I was going to share this plate of yabbies but ‘shellfishly’ ate them all by myself.

AS with last week I have had so many fishing reports that I do not know where to start. This time of the year it is yellowbelly – also known as golden perch - that are the most popular species to target. Anglers targeting larger, trophy sized fish have been having success at both Lake Eildon and Lake Hume. During the week I saw a photo of a 64cm yellowbelly caught in the Bowna Arm at Lake Hume and have literally seen dozens of decent 50cm+ yellowbelly caught at both lakes. Lipless crankbait lures and small to medium sized soft plastics seem to be getting good results.

Anglers looking to catch a feed of good eating sized yellowbelly have been doing very well in Lake Nillahcootie with small yabbies being the best bait. Some yellowbelly have been caught on worms and live shrimp, and a few have been trolled on medium sized deep diving lures, however small yabbies seem to be the most consistent. Yellowbelly can go from being the nicest eating fish in the water to the worst just by growing a couple of extra inches - 50cm seems to be about where most fish start to become far too fatty. I have been having the time of my life catching yabbies over the past week.

I have been exploring, trying new waterways on both public and private property. I have hit the jackpot on a private property with a few dams containing some lovely large yabbies which have provided magnificent eating. Without naming anybody, I would like to publicly thank the very kind landowner for granting me access to his property - it has bought much happiness to my family and I. This is the time of year that the yabbies really start to come on the bite, and there is no better way to spend time with kids than to take them yabbying.

Living with IBS

MANY clients present to clinic stating they have IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). It is reported to affect 10-15 per cent of the population and is only second to the common cold for absenteeism from the workplace. IBS can present with diarrhoea, constipation or an alternation of the two. Bloating, gas, discomfort and pain are often associated with IBS. IBS is best described as long term or reoccurring dysfunction of the GIT/ colon in motility and sensation. These functions are controlled by the brain and is often why it is referred to as a brain-gut disorder. This explains why herbal and nutritional medicine work wonders in this situation. True IBS is only diagnosed when other pathology has been ruled out. This includes but is not limited to, food allergies (celiac, lactose etc), colitis, Crohn’s disease and GIT/bowel cancers. It is important that you rule these out prior to masking symptoms with medicines. Please talk to your GP or naturopath about how to do this. IBS like symptoms can also be a result of antibiotic use, poor diet and lifestyle choices, parasite infection, gastroenteritis, food intolerance/ allergies, stress/ anxiety and medicine/ supplement side effect to name a few. As naturopaths we sit down with you and go through your history, diet and lifestyle and often will work with your GP or gastroenterologist to eliminate causative factors and work with pathology to get you back to having great digestion. Top ďŹ ve things you can do to help your gut: 1) Get tested: rule out any underlying pathology. Talk to your GP or naturopath about this. 2) Test for food intolerances: these are different to allergies and can be tested in house at our clinic. 3) Feed your gut good bugs: probiotics in tablet form alongside food forms can be very beneďŹ cial: sauerkraut, yoghurt, kim chi, ďŹ bre, fruit and veg all

support a healthy gut environment. 4) Take notice of your gut! Is it playing up with stress/anxiety? If yes, then that is your cause and herbs and nutrients work well at improving the communication between your brain and your gut. 5) Hydration: if you are constipated,

then you need to soften the bowel motion to help evacuate it. If you are suffering from diarrhoea then you need to replace uids and electrolytes that are being lost through your bowel motion. Naturopaths can be very effective at supporting healthy gut function, so what are you waiting for?

Gapsted Wines Tobacco Road Cabernet Sauvignon HAVING recently stayed somewhere which described its accommodation as luxury, it made me think about how a word can carry so many expectations. The minute you call yourself luxury, the punter’s expectations are high and they almost demand to be impressed - any flaws becoming immediately evident and disappointing. TECH & SCIENCE

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ MONEY, MONEY, MONEY: We all know we should save for a rainy day, so why do many of us find it so difficult?

The science behind spending and saving WE’VE all been there before. You wake up on a Sunday morning and feel that pang of guilt about the amount of money you spent the night before. Or you check your bank account and wonder just how the numbers got so low. You were sure there was an extra hundred or two in there yesterday, where could it possibly have disappeared to? Oh, that’s right, it turned into the thing you bought two weeks ago which sits in that place, likely never to be used again. We’re told, time and time again, that it’s important to save money for the future. We know it’s true too - there are countless reasons to do so, each of which will substantially benefit us in the future. So why doesn’t our behaviour match what we know is good for us? This week, we’re going to take a look at why it can be so hard to save money, and why some of us are worse than others. The science behind our

spending habits You might be inclined to think that our ability to save money is tied closely to our level of financial literacy. Afterall, you aren’t some sort of genius, how could you possibly save money like those rich stock brokers and investor types? Except, when you get down to the nuts and bolts of saving money, it’s not at all complicated. In fact, it’s basically a simple math problem that any primary school student would be capable of solving. No, according to science, the problem lies elsewhere. Studies performed by the American Psychological Association show that poor financial choices are associated with high levels of in-the-moment-living. And the strongest predictor of smart financial decisions is not our level of financial literacy – it’s how often we stop to think about the future. Not convinced? Consider this: people who

speak certain languages are better at saving money than others. Yeah, you read correctly. Those who speak languages that use the same verb conjugation for present and future tenses are among the world’s biggest money savers - such as the Chinese and Germans. Since they speak about the present and the future the same way, they’ve trained their brains to think about them similarly, which makes it easier for them to save money for the future in the present time, according to behavioral economist Keith Chen. On the other hand, people who speak languages that use separate verbs for the present and future are much worse at saving money, such as English speakers like Australians. Since the future feels more separate from the present, it’s harder to think about them similarly. It’s no coincidence that Americans and British are some of the worst savers on the planet.

So there we have it. It’s hard for us to save up because we tend to value the ‘now’ over the ‘later.’ In behavioral economics speak, this is called ‘present bias’. Why it’s so hard to think about the future So, why is it difficult for us to behave in ways that will benefit ourselves in the future. After all, our future selves are just as much ‘us’ as our current selves. Why is it so hard for our brains to understand that? According to science, our mind thinks about our future selves in the same way it thinks about complete strangers. Here’s what happens: When we think about ourselves, a region of the brain called the medial prefrontal cortex – or MPFC – lights up. When we think about other people, activity in this region powers down. And when we think about someone we have absolutely nothing in common with, it

activates even less. Here’s the kicker: the further out in time we try to imagine our own lives, the less activation we show in our MPFC, according to fMRI studies by ResearchGate. In other words, our brains act as if our future self is someone we don’t know very well, and, quite frankly, someone we don’t care about very much. So what can we do about this? To get better at saving for the future, we’ll have to trick our minds into sympathizing with our future selves. If we teach ourselves to experience the thoughts and emotions of ourselves in the future, can we make better financial decisions? In a clever psychological study, a group of college students was shown images of their own faces that were digitally altered to appear 50 years older. A second group of students was shown images of themselves that were unchanged.

Those who’d seen a glimpse of their future selves said they would allocate about 30 per cent more money on average to their savings than the students who were shown pictures of their current selves. “So the lesson from that is anything that we can do that will increase how concrete and salient our future self is – that’s the type of thing that can help us make better decisions,” said Magnus Herschfield, the pioneer of this study. A final way to get better at prioritising our future self is to make it our default option. “The lesson from behavioral economics is that people only save if it’s automatic,” said behavioral economist and Nobel Prize winner Richard Thaler. “If you want to help people accomplish some goal, make it easy.” Australia’s superannuation scheme seeks to do just that, making it mandatory for Australians to save money via direct payment into a super fund.

Drama that brings even the cake to tiers CHANNEL CHAT

THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS:

SHOW: Bride and Prejudice CHANNEL: PRIME7 TIME: 7.30pm varying weekdays

Have You Been Paying Attention? (Win, 9.30pm, Friday) Such a great program if you want to catch up on current affairs and news, with some added humour on the side, hosted by Tom Gleisner. The Graham Norton Show (8.30pm, various times on Win) Adorably funny Graham Norton entertains a range of celebrity guests as they all sit on a couch and drink.

with Leah Anderson Byrne LET’S talk about Bride and Prejudice. I’ve never been one for wedding shows that show a perfect couple in a perfect venue with perfect guests and everything is just perfect. Sure, it’s nice to see love but everyone watching knows that nothing is perfect, especially marriage. Bride and Prejudice brings

something new to the table, with parents of the almostwed couples testing their child’s partner trying to satisfy their concerns ahead of the approaching weddings. In a recent episode there was so much drama, I could barely keep up. Jess refused Fatima’s $10,000 bribe to leave, Terry and Margaret interrogated

Lily with questions intended to appease their concerns about their future daughterin-law, Ry met with Philippa’s parents Peter and Gunilla, John tried to “talk some sense into Dylan” about what is morally correct and why she shouldn’t marry his daughter,

The Bachelorette Australia (Win, 7.30 Thursday) I’m always a fan of the cringey, romantic and so, so terrible dating shows, the Bachelorette in particular, just try it out, you’ll get swept away in the drama of it all.

and game-playing was over for Bobbi and Amanda who wasted no time in hooking Simon up to a lie detector to question him on his sobriety and alleged infidelity. That’s some hot tea being spilt. If you have no idea who

these people are, not to worry, I jumped in on episode 5. It’s yet another so-badit’s-good reality TV show I’m

probably going to be hooked on alongside The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, Bachelor in Paradise…you get the idea.
