WITH a father who was such a keen wood cutter that he kept his axe under his bed at the Marist Brothers-run school he attended, it’s no surprise that Fabian Harding and his four siblings have all taken up the sport their father excelled in at one time or another. When Ron Harding left school he studied to become a Christian Brother but he gave that away to work as a wool classer, before turning his hand to logging contracting, purchasing a sawmill and cutting sleepers for the Victorian Railways along the Ovens River. “Dad won a few local championships here in the North East, mainly in the standing block and I remember travelling to competitions from Canberra all the way down to Geelong,” Fabian said at his Wangaratta home. Those ‘few’ wins actually numbered nine North East aggregate championships and Ron, along with other famed axemen such as David Foster, Gary Smith, Laurence and Martin O’Toole, Len Bennett, Gary Hewitt, Tommy Bartel and Jason Wynyard were often revered and celebrated. Ron and wife Margaret raised five children and Fabian noted that it was his mother who was head of the house. “She kept the five of us kids in line,” he said. “Dad was a great saw man and he and my eldest brother, Brendan, won many crosscut events. “My brothers all cut and were excellent axemen, but due to work commitments, they didn’t keep going in the sport as work always comes first.” Fabian attended Galen College until year nine when glandular fever saw him miss most of the year; he intended to repeat at the Wangaratta Technical College but he and the vice-principal agreed that school ‘wasn’t for him’ and he left.

Bushfires and pets PERSISTENT smoke and air pollution can have a negative impact on our pets, horses and livestock just like it does for humans. To minimise the effects of air pollution on your pets, keep them inside where possible, avoid exercising them outdoors and provide plenty of fresh drinking water. For horses, soak hay prior to feeding to reduce dust exposure. Contact your veterinarian if your pet begins coughing, has increased respiration rate or difficulty breathing or has any nasal or eye discharge. It takes four to six weeks for airway damage caused by poor air quality to heal, therefore, plan to give your horse four to six weeks rest from the time when air quality returns to normal. Wine By Sam - 2018 The Victorian Rose WHEN bushfires are burning in your local environment, they cast such a strange light over the landscape. Like looking through a kaleidoscope, or playing with effects in photo editing software, the subject might remain the same but the colours appear as though filtered through a dusty orange lens. The clarity becomes as hazy as the air, and that lens keeps changing from greys and yellows through to reds and browns, the time of day becoming hard to pinpoint. It makes you wonder if you’ll ever see blue sky or smell fresh air again. A little time out to relax and enjoy good company and frivolous conversation certainly helps ease the tension, and for me, a glass of The Victorian Rose by Sam Plunkett was also appreciated. This salmon pink drop is made from Pinot Noir grapes picked early in the season to capture the fruit’s acidity before sugar levels began to climb. It has an aroma reminiscent of strawberry and perhaps watermelon, with an edge of earthy spice. It’s bright and zesty on the palate, hinting at those red fruits, but coming to an end with crisp acidity. This Rose makes an ideal table wine with a variety of foods including pork and poultry, but is also an ideal foil for crackers swiped into rich, creamy cheeses. And sometimes those kind of quick and easy pleasures are all you have time for when energy levels are depleted. Here’s hoping for brighter days on the horizon.

Christmas hangovers - the effect of stress, overeating and digestion

This Day in History, 1857 WITH ceremony befitting the importance of the occasion, the Chinese community of Beechworth opened the structure which would be the focal point of their religious ceremonies on the goldfields. The Beechworth Joss House, the first of a number which would be built, was originally constructed of canvas. The Chinese community had invited a number of European guests to the opening, to watch the fireworks and partake of the Chinese dishes especially prepared for the occasion. Visitors were also invited to enjoy a pipe of Turkish tobacco or opium, and to chance their luck at the gambling tables - two leisure activities to which most of the Chinese seemed to be addicted.

YOU ARE GREAT AT WHAT YOU DO... ...but being great at what you do is only a good start in business. The next step is reaching the right audience with the right message.

HANDS up if you still feel full after Christmas day? Who ate too much in December in general? Did you love all the parties - the drinks, the sugar, the deserts, the meats? Overeating throughout most of December seems to be a common theme, with work functions, family Christmas parties and lots of entertaining. For most of the season drinks and nibbles flow steadily onto dinner and we have a month of continuous eating and drinking! If you stuffed yourself silly this Christmas and lashed out on richer foods or decided to ignore your body signs and eat those foods that give you indigestion, belly aches or fatigue (just for one day) you may need some help with getting your digestion back on track. half a lemon into a glass of water and drink three times a day. Apple cider vinegar in water: this can be used as a preventative if you are prone to indigestion or heartburn. Add ½ tsp of apple cider into a small glass of water and drink 10 minutes before each meal. If you forget and get indigestion, sip slowly on this brew and it should settle things down. Peppermint tea: the best remedy for abdominal discomfort and wind. Make a really strong brew of loose leaf peppermint tea and steep for five to 10 minutes. The darker the colour and the fresher the leaves, the more therapeutic. Fennel seeds: chew on some raw seeds or infuse them into your peppermint tea. Best taken after meals to aid digestion. Probiotics - If the bloating is occurring lower down in the intestinal area rather than your stomach, probiotics in combination with the peppermint tea may be helpful.

Fabian is now a log driver, carting logs from pine plantations to local sawmills and competes in a few competitions but there was a time he didn’t think he’d ever be able to cut again - in fact he battled just to stay alive and get back home to his family. “In 2012 I had a terrible truck accident which crushed my legs,” he said. “Because of the extended length of time they were crushed for, and the surgery to save my legs, I was left with severe nerve damage and pain issues. “I was also heavily medicated for a few years and had trouble walking and standing without pain. “The medication made me unstable on my feet, so chopping was out of the question.” Fabian’s main goal was to get himself right for his family and when his children - Lily (16), Eliza (12) and Zeke (8) - showed interest in learning to cut, Fabian made a concerted effort to get back to the sport and impart his knowledge. “Lily started competing in 2018, she only had

four competition cuts that year, with four again in 2019, she hasn’t cracked it for a win yet, but isn’t far off,” he said. “Eliza is going well, she’s still cutting in the backyard, but will be competing next year.” “I’m not ready for competitions yet,” Eliza noted. “She has trouble getting the right makeup to wear when she’s cutting, which is her main priority at the moment,” Fabian corrected with a grin. “Zeke will be a few years off but he has plenty of determination so he should go well. “I think I’ve almost got my wife convinced to have a cut as well, but as usual it’s the ageold juggling act of work and school that comes first.” If Fabian has his way and the whole family ends up competing at the Wangaratta Sports Carnival one year, it may be rather confusing as to whether the ‘Harding’ they call is a competitor or the name of the award with the Ron Harding Memorial Underhand State Title and Margaret Harding Front Markers Underhand

awards presented to winners during the January carnival. “The Front Markers award is for up and coming axemen...Mum used to sponsor the under 18s Underhand as she thought the junior cutters deserved as good (as) prizes as the older blokes,” Fabian explained. “The minimum competing age is about 11 or 12, but I’ve seen younger kids cutting at the bigger shows and junior cuts. “Unfortunately Lily, Eliza and Zeke are the only local juniors, so for the moment Lily has to cut against older male cutters. “We have to do a fair bit of travelling for them to cut against other juniors, but the sport is getting more and more female cutters. “Around here we’ve had a few female-only events, which is fantastic for the sport and Lily has cut against some of the members of the Australian women’s team.” For more information or to see Fabian and Lily in action, they will be competing at the Wangaratta Athletics Carnival held at the Wangaratta Showgrounds on January 25.

GONE FISHING

TECH & SCIENCE

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ FUN FISHING: A Waranga Basin redfin caught casting a small lipless crankbait while wading the lake margins at Harriman Point boat ramp last week.

◆ GO FOR MILES: Advances in solid state battery technology could extend the charge life of electric vehicles significantly, allowing for much greater mileage (up to 500 miles per charge).

Cod fishing picks up Solid State: The future of battery technology

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA dozen small redfin in a couple of hours casting small Strike Tiger nymph soft plastics and a tiny lipless crankbait from the edge of the lake. It was very hot, and wet wading provided a pleasant relief from the heat and picking up a few small redfin was just the icing on the cake. A couple of weeks ago I caught a couple of small redfin with the exact same technique at Lake Hume, and one at Lake William Hovell, so the small reddies might be starting to fire in the local lakes. This is one of my favourite forms of fishing. Be sure to check road closures and current fire notifications before heading up to Lake Buffalo and William Hovell though as roads have been opening and closing a lot in those areas due to the bushfire danger.

IT’S not an exaggeration to say that batteries run our modern world. From smart phones, computers and tablets, to cars, to solar systems, right down to the torch tucked away in your drawer somewhere, batteries are installed in so many of our devices that it’s difficult to imagine what our life would be like without them. But with the new technologies emerging, the need for better batteries is ever constant. For years, the Holy Grail of battery research has been making solid-state battery cells that replace the liquid electrolyte in conventional cells with solid materials. Solid-state batteries are believed to be cheaper to produce, have higher energy density, and have a longer lifespan than conventional lithium-ion batteries. That is, if someone can crack the final code for commercially viable cells. Solid state battery technology isn’t a brand new idea, but build materials, design safety, costs, and production techniques are hindering adoption. To understand why let’s dive into a little background on traditional Lithium-Ion batteries and why they aren’t so easy to replace. The trouble with Dendrites Besides costs, dendrites are the biggest problem with solid-state batteries. Dendrite is a crystal-like build-up of lithium metal that typically starts at the anode and can grow throughout the battery. This occurs as a result of high current charging and discharging, where ions in the solid electrolyte combine with electrons to form a layer of solid lithium metal. Large dendrite build-up will eventually pierce the battery cathode/anode separator, causing a short circuit that will destroy the battery and could cause a fire. Today’s Li-ion batteries sidestep the dendrite issue by using liquid electrolytes for the conductive pathways, rather than a solid metal which would allow for ions to be packed closer together for greater capacity.

Unfortunately, this liquid is flammable, which can cause Li-ion batteries to combust under high pressure, heat, or current. Graphite is then often used in the intercalated lithium anode material, offering long-term stability at some expense to maximum charge flow. What are the advantages? The solid-state battery is distinguished from conventional Li-ion batteries by the replacement of the liquid or polymer electrolyte with a solid electrolyte. The solid electrolyte enables batteries to be more energy dense and more durable. The density improvement is significant, making commercialised versions of these batteries smaller and cheaper on a kilowatt-hour basis. Furthermore, some researchers believe solid-state batteries could give EVs over 500 miles of range. What are the challenges? Most challenges for solid-state batteries are technical, limiting commercial viability. For example, identifying a uniform material for the solid-state portion of the battery that conducts electricity efficiently in large battery packs has proven to be a key challenge for developers. Lithium metal is believed to be the prime material for solid-state batteries because of its high capacity potential and stability. Additionally, researchers at MIT have identified a way to make thinner lithium electrolytes that would allow for faster charging and higher voltage solid-state batteries. Many do not believe solid-state batteries are commercially viable yet due to potential issues with low temperatures. The physical limitations of solid electrolytes makes them less conductive than liquid electrolytes. But researchers at multiple universities across the globe are heavily invested in developing sold-state battery technology, and it’s expected that we’ll start to see commercially viable solid state batteries installed in electric vehicles by the middle of this decade.

FINALLY we seem to be experiencing more routine summer temperatures. It is still hot, but the extreme heat with consecutive days of over 40 degrees has slipped away for now. This appears to have led to a slight improvement in the Murray cod fishing across the region. In last week’s report I mentioned that the extreme heat had really put the breaks on the cod fishing locally. Well, this week I am pleased to say that I have started receiving a few better reports as well as picking up a few fish myself. The reports have not been outstanding like they were in December, but it is great to see a few cod being caught again. My friend Tim Galley has caught a few Murray cod on both bait and surface lures right here in Wangaratta, while another friend Matt Thurling and his sons caught eight cod on bait in the lower Ovens River one evening last week with the largest being 53cm. Late last week I ventured west to escape the smoke haze and went to Waranga Basin - but it didn’t work as it was still very smoky. I managed to catch half a
