Paintings on buildings and silos? Oh my!
By BELINDA HARRISON

FROM an apprenticeship in graphic reproduction to painting murals on buildings and silos across North East Victoria, Tim Bowtell’s work is familiar to locals and visitors alike. Born in Melbourne and moving to Geelong at the age of 10, Tim’s working life started with an apprenticeship in graphic reproduction at the age of 17. By the time he was 25, Tim was married with two young sons, had completed his apprenticeship, moved into the graphic design department and then moved on and started his own freelance graphic design business. Around that time, Geelong was starting to take off as a major city centre and Tim found himself restless working for hours on end in front of a computer. He sought a tree-change. Both of Tim’s sons suffered severe and frequent asthma attacks but on the occasions they holidayed in the North East, Tim and his wife noticed that their asthma was basically non-existent - the fresh air seemed to be a healthy environment for them. The stability of the weather was also a drawing factor, having lived through the ‘four seasons in one day’ weather of Geelong for years. “I also had a yearning to build my own earth house and thought a career path may be in the building trade,” Tim said. “We purchased a three acre property 20 minutes from Benalla and I began building. “With the internet getting better, and my design clients still wanting me to continue doing their work, I was able to work remotely and build my home in between design jobs.” The move provided more for Tim and his family than just fresh air and settled weather. It was while Tim was building their house (as an owner-builder) that he met Mike Larkin. An electrician by day, Mike was also an artist in his spare time and he and Tim had many discussions about art while they wired up the house.

Check your cat collars PET owners are being urged to check the type of collars their cats wear after three cats were seen by vets at The Lost Dogs’ Home in one week. “There have also been numerous incidents of cats suffering serious wounds as a result of poorly-fitting collars cutting into their armpits and necks,” said Lost Dogs’ Home spokesperson Suzana Talevski. “We are seeing on average one a week come through the shelter vet clinic.” “It is essential owners are aware of the potential dangers of poorly-fitting collars as well as those made with elastic or featuring buckles only owners can unfasten. “We encourage all cat owners to use quick release collars, especially if your cat spends a great deal of time outdoors.” If the animal is injured and not found for several days, or even weeks, the collar can become embedded in the animal’s flesh resulting in horrific injuries and at times, amputation of limbs. “Cats are natural hunters and curious explorers that enjoy climbing trees or pushing through tight spots and for these reasons it is imperative that any collar is designed to free the cat should they become snagged during their adventures,” said Ms Talevski. “If the collar gets caught on something, the cat may try to free itself by using its

with The Lost Dogs’ Home foot and then, in turn, get its leg stuck with the collar ending up under the cat’s armpit causing painful injury.” Tips for picking the right cat collar: 1. Style of collar Make sure it has a breakaway buckle. These designs are intended to allow a cat who is caught on an object to twist and safely slide out of the collar. However, it is important to test the collar you purchase. How easily does the buckle come undone? If your cat gets caught and hangs, will it function as it should? 2. Test the fit The rule of thumb - or fingers really is snug enough so you can just slide two fingers under the collar. Too loose and it is too easy for a cat to get their mouth under the collar and become tangled. Cats - especially kittens - are amazingly flexible. 3. Test your cat Do not put a collar on a cat and leave them unsupervised. Even if the cat seems fine at first and ignores the collar, as they move around, try to eat or drink, lie down, or play, they may suddenly become bothered by this new thing around their neck and try to get it off. Watch your cat closely for the next 24 hours to see how it responds to its new collar.
with Agriculture Victoria ◆ UNSIGHTLY: While alternaria leaf blight of parsley is not widespread in Victoria, it’s important to know how to control it.
Alternaria leaf blight of parsley ALTERNARIA leaf blight was first found in Australia on parsley crops in Queensland and Victoria in 2005. The disease is caused by the fungus alternaria petroselini and commonly infects parsley overseas. In Queensland, it caused significant damage to a single crop following extensive wet, humid weather. In Victoria, the disease has been found only on one property, where it caused minor damage. Symptoms The disease is also known as leaf spot or scorch and can cause dark spots on leaves that may lead to
leaf and petiole death. Root and crown infections can cause damping-off of seedlings and chlorosis and collapse of older plants. Overseas, the disease typically occurs during or following wet winter weather. Spread The disease is seed-borne, so planting of infested seed causes the disease to spread to new production areas. Control Since infested seed spreads the disease, control is primarily through planting high quality, pathogen-tested seed. Fungicides may also assist in
managing the disease; ask your chemical adviser for state regulations on approved products. As the disease can also be soilborne, rotation to non-umbelliferous crops for a period of two to four years is necessary to reduce carryover of the fungus to new parsley crops. Current situation Alternaria leaf blight is unlikely to become a major issue for Victorian parsley producers except following heavy irrigation in hot weather. Starting your baby on solids ‘WHOLEFOODS for children’ is a naturopathic motto, followed by our mantra of ‘start them on food not numbers’. This basic principle or naturopathic philosophy of buying, preparing and serving simple healthy food to children as they wean off breast milk (or formula) seems to be lost in the convenience era of fortified packaged baby foods. Paintings on buildings and silos? Oh my! FEATURE Ŷ From page 1 It was Mike who suggested Tim attend his upcoming workshop on the method of traditional tonal painting in oils. “That one workshop taught me how a painter views the world and how to translate it simply into paint,” Tim explained. “From then on I began to paint whenever possible; I couldn’t get enough of it.” In 2009, Tim enrolled at Wangaratta GOTAFE in visual arts, which put forward challenges and themes for him to paint. “While I loved living rurally and had a passion to paint it, ironically it was the urban architecture and people that appealed and introduced me to the art of Jeffery Smart - an acclaimed Australian painter who is known for his delineated urban and industrial landscapes,” Tim said.
In 2011, Tim had a successful solo exhibition at Benalla Art Gallery. “I spent a year painting 16 large oil paintings of scenes mainly in and around Benalla,” he said. “I also developed a need to include a narrative within most of my pictures. “I didn’t just want to paint pictures, I wanted to say something and painting became my preferred way to express myself.” Current affairs influence Tim’s paintings, which helps to understand what’s happening around him. “As an artist, I’m trying to make sense of what’s going on in the world and art is a great way to explore it,” he said. “We are in some really strange times at the moment and it will definitely inform my
paintings going into the future. “I have created a few controversial paintings but I don’t seek to, I actually just try to paint my truth and that challenges people. “I think because it reflects something they don’t want to think about, that’s the interesting thing about art - people interpret a painting in different ways.” While Tim is proud of all of his art, and his favourite is often the one he’s working on, his most meaningful is a mural he painted for the 2016 Wall to Wall festival in Benalla. It’s called ‘Sticks n Stones’ and expresses the horrific impact of online bullying. “It’s a very personal piece to me,” Tim said. “During the previous year’s festival, while painting a mural of Gandhi with the slogan
‘An eye for eye will make the whole world blind’ we lost a young friend to suicide. “That inspired me to paint ‘Sticks n Stones’ the following year. “People say the most awful things online and while ‘real’ sticks and stones break our bones, cyber bulling causes far greater damage.” In 2018, the St James Silo Art committee was looking for a local artist to paint their silos. Having seen Tim’s work around Benalla, they approached him and asked if he’d be interested. “To be honest, I wasn’t sure if I could do it, but I really wanted to,” he said. “The silo art for me is about the community’s story. “The final images are a culmination of much discussion

with the community and committee. “I like to think people can come to a little town like St James and get a sense of the place, it offers discussion and can be a learning experience; it keeps their history alive.” Tim’s mural work is on public display around the North East or on his social media channels at Facebook, Instagram

Tim’s work (and his studio) can also be found at the North East Artisans gallery in Benalla, however, due to COVID-19, it is currently closed. “I’m exceptionally grateful to the North East area for the progressiveness in the arts,” he said. “I often wonder whether I would even be an artist if I had stayed in Geelong.”
