Enabling leadership By KYLIE WILSON
FUNDING provided across the North East as part of the State Government’s Engage! 20182020 program at the beginning of this year has helped encourage a number of young people in the region to become more involved in their local communities. One such young person is Chiltern resident Jedd Dryden. A year eleven student, Jedd became involved in a number of youth initiatives in the region after attending an information session led by Indigo Shire Council youth officer Sal Kimber. “I took a chance on that, and it just led to more and more opportunities,” he said. Jedd is involved in the shire’s Youth Ambassador program, as well as working at planning events with the Rutherglen Youth Action Crew, and has also attended a youth politics camp. He said that mental health was among the issues in the community that concerned him the most, having seen it affect a range of people within his community. “The state of our youth mental health services needs to be improved,” he said. “It’s a really big issue.” Being involved with the various groups in the community has helped Jedd build up skills in event planning and management, as well as improve his people skills and personal confidence and his ability to deal with setbacks.

Tax myths busted, part 2 Myth: I can claim my work clothes because my boss told me to wear a certain colour. Fact: Unless your clothing is a uniform that is unique and distinct to your employer, or protective or occupationspecific clothing that you were required to wear to earn your income, you won’t be able to claim it. Plain clothes, like black pants, are not deductible even if your boss told you to wear them. Myth: I can claim my whole Netflix or Foxtel subscription because I need to keep up to date for work. Fact: Unless you only use your subscriptions for work purposes, you will have to apportion the cost between business and private usage, and only claim the work-related portion of your expenses. You will also need to be able to show a strong connection between earning your income and the subscription. Myth: I can claim home-towork travel because I need to
get to work to earn my income. Fact: for most of us, home to work travel is private since your boss doesn’t pay you until you get to work. There are limited circumstances where someone who has to transport bulky equipment can make a claim. Myth: I’ve got a capped phone plan, so I can claim both personal and private phone calls. Fact: Unless you only use your phone for work, you will have to apportion the cost between business and private usage and only claim the work-related portion of your expenses. Myth: If I use an agent, they will take responsibility for my claims. Fact: Even if you use a tax agent, you are ultimately responsible for ensuring the information in your return, including the deductions you claim, is correct. Spring not far away
I DON’T know about the rest of you, but I am quite excited about the prospect of spring just around the corner. It is lovely to see the daffodils with their happy faces and some blossom trees starting to burst into life to put a smile on your face. It was also wonderful to see some decent rain. It is still a little early to feed most things but it is a good idea to make sure you have everything you need when the warm spring days do arrive. Different plants require different

As the days grow longer it is lovely to be able to spend a little more time in the garden. fertilisers, so pop down to the nursery and chat to staff about what your garden may need. It is also time to apply a dose of fungicide to your fruit trees to help prevent leaf curl. If you have not done this already it is not too late with the final spray being applied at bud swell. Leaf curl mainly effects peaches and nectarines. It may seem early to be talking about fruit fly but I recommend putting up traps as soon as the weather begins to warm up. If spring arrives

FEATURE STORY
Dry eye KERATOCONJUNCTIVITIS Sicca is a condition more commonly referred to as “dry eyeâ€? which may effect as many as 1 in 100 dogs. Cats also may rarely be affected. Caused by inadequate tear production, dry eye literally causes the surface of the eye to desiccate resulting in irritation, inammation and pain to your pet’s eyes. The condition may also lead to other serious complications. If left untreated, ulceration, infection, scarring, and pigmentation can greatly reduce vision, and if severe may lead to loss of the eye. Many things including immune cell inďŹ ltration or nerve problems can cause the reduced tear production seen in animals with dry eye. Certain breeds are more susceptible than others, in particular dachshunds, Boston terriers, pugs and chihuahuas. You should suspect dry eye if you pet’s eyes are “gunkyâ€?,

red, painful, discoloured or swollen; or if there is reluctance to hold open their eyes. It is important that if you suspect your pet is suffering from dry eye you have it immediately examined by a veterinarian for the greatest chance of preventing the more serious sequelae. Diagnosis of dry eye is made using special strips of paper to assess the rate of tear production. Treatment involves topical eye ointments and possibly surgery. ArtiďŹ cial tears may also be required if tear production is found to be greatly decreased. Dry eye can potentially be a very serious condition but if treated appropriately and quickly, your pet can lead a normal, happy, healthy life.
VET CORNER THIS week’s pet of the week at Wangaratta RSPCA is Abs, an oriental cross domestic shorthair male cat who is two years old and tabby and white in colour. To see more animals up for adoption at the Wangaratta RSPCA, visit the shelter in Connell Street or phone (03) 5722 2874.

Enabling leadership Ĺś
From page 1
Already a skilled photographer and website designer, his ultimate career goal is to be a business owner and/or work in computer science, and Jedd said that the skills he was learning in the community would help him towards his future career. He said he was glad to have the opportunity to participate in youth programs in the area and said it would help develop the leaders of the future. “When the time comes, the people who want to step into that role know how to do so, he said. Another youth active in Indigo Shire communities is Border based teen Jai Butler, who is part of the Tangambalanga Youth Action Crew – which has already organised a music festival in their town - and is also part of a group organising a “Rainbow Ball for the end of this year aimed at LGBTQ+ young people in the North East. He said that he was excited to be a part of the forthcoming event.
“It’s pretty cool to be a part of that,â€? he said. “I think it shows the LGBTQ+ people in the region that they’re accepted and supported, and they can come to feel safe and have fun.â€? He added that he hoped the ball will become an annual event. Hoping to pursue a career in acting, Jai said that being involved in the community had helped his conďŹ dence immeasurably. “I now know how to organise events and get things going in the community,â€? he said. “It’s an amazing feeling.â€? One of the other programs in the region to beneďŹ t from the Engage! 201820 funding was the Healthy Eating and Living Program at North East Support and Action for Youth (NESAY). The program runs for ďŹ ve weeks and helps young people who need help developing their independent living skills, and the Engage! Funding will see it continue for the next two years. With sessions having happened in
Wangaratta, one currently happening in Benalla and one planned for later this year in Wodonga, Claire Anderson from NESAY said the classes were already making a difference for young people in the region. She said the program had helped participants budget more efficiently and make connections with people in their community, which she said “offers them a sense of prideâ€?. Claire added that she had seen many people grow and change by participating in the program, from trying their hand at more complicated recipes to developing better social skills and making friends within the group. She said some young people have been taking individual HEAL sessions, which has also helped their personal conďŹ dence. For more information on the ongoing HEAL program, see nesay.com. au/healthy-eating-living-heal/, and for more details of what is happening for youth in the Indigo Shire, see the Indigo Shire (Youth Page) on Facebook.

Emotional eating: a loss of appetite and a pyjama day for the digestive system
I SEE a lot of patient with low appetite. They say things like “I just don’t feel hungryâ€?, or “ I can go all day without eating and not realise until dinnerâ€?. There are various reasons for low appetite. Often it is grief. Grief about living with a debilitating chronic illness, grief from loss of a partner, grief about loss of control, grief about loneliness. The other kind of appetite loss I see in patient’s stems from being too busy or stressed. There is the parent who forgets to eat because they are trying to keep on top of everything, the mother of the newborn with colic – screaming when ever they are put down, the workaholic who forgets to eat and has another coffee to ‘get through’ instead. The student who also works part time and the teacher who is too busy at lunch time ďŹ nish-

ing projects or dealing with meetings to eat. And then there is loss of appetite that stems from nutritional deďŹ ciencies like anaemia (low iron). In traditional medicine all these (grief, busy-ness, anaemia) are all known as ‘scattered states’, where the energy is directed away from digestion. This can leave you feeling nauseas and knotted in your stomach or too busy in your head, disconnecting you from your appetite receptors in the stomach. If this is you, implementing a ‘PJ day for the digestionâ€? can help, whilst you work with your naturopath on the underlying cause. Eat like this for 1 day to 1 month depending on the debility (physical weakness).

WINE TALK

FOOD TALK
Morris of Rutherglen Sparkling Shiraz Durif HAVING spent a long time trying to master it, we are ďŹ nally enjoying some succulent and perfectly cooked roast beef. With the help of a good butcher supplying the ideal topside, a reminder on the angle to slice it, a trusty thermometer and some resting time, it has been turning out beautifully. What I love about roast beef is it’s great in any season, hot or cold, it’s relatively good for you, and the aroma as it cooks, for a carnivore, is as inviting as biscuits baking. It provides that multi-sensory satisfaction which comes from sound, smell and ďŹ nally taste - and rubbing in plenty of peppery seasoning is not half bad either. We enjoyed a few slices with some decadent potato dauphinoise and a glass of Morris of Rutherglen sparkling Shiraz Durif. This lively wine is an incredibly dark, opaque, purple red
with Anita McPherson colour and pours with a pretty froth of purple-tinged bubbles. It has an earthy, dark berry aroma which hints at sweetness, but what I like about it is its denseness and rich, dry avour. You get the pleasure of what we used to call sparkling burgundy, with a rich savouriness that makes it perfect with game or meaty dishes, and you can’t get more meaty than a hunk of beef. It’s a wine that captures the multi-sensory experience in spades. This is one carnivore that is satisďŹ ed. Visit the cellar door in Rutherglen and taste the full range, or go to www.morriswines.com Price approx: $19
This Day in History, 1914 AT least nine brass bands, a crowd of between 12-14,000, a procession of oats and horsemen, the like of which Wangaratta had not seen before, and a goat race at the Showgrounds – all to raise money for the local hospital. All this saw the Great Goat Race and Carnival of 1914 pass down into folklore In the ďŹ nal, a goat named Firestick outran the opposition and passed the post a convincing winner.
Roast pork with pineapple chilli salsa THIS recipe, by Dr Joanna McMillan for Australian Pinepples, serves four and is a twist on a classic roast pork. More recipes like this can be found at australianpineapples. com.au. Method Preheat oven to 220 degrees Celsius. Rub salt and olive oil into skin and place in roasting tray. Roast for 30 minutes, then turn down to 180 degrees Celsius and roast for a further 30 minutes or
until skin is crisp and cracking (use this method if the skin on option is chosen). Mix all the ingredients for the salsa in a bowl and leave in the fridge for an hour for the avours to develop. Remove the pork from the oven, discard the fat layer and slice the meat. Serve the meat topped with the pineapple salsa and serve with boiled kiper potatoes and a big green salad drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and lemon juice dressing.

Overtime up in one third of Australian workplaces ONE-third (34 per cent) of organisations increased overtime over the past 12 months, up from 32 per cent one year prior, according to recruiting experts Hays. Of these, 81 per cent increased overtime by up to 25 per cent. A further 17 per cent did so by between 25 and 50 per cent. Of the more than 3000 organisations surveyed as part of the annual Hays Salary Guide, just 8 per cent managed to reduce overtime over the past 12 months. “Increased business activity and a growing shortage of highly-skilled professionals have
driven up overtime in some organisations, with employers turning to their existing team to ensure workloads are completed,” says Nick Deligiannis, managing director of Hays in Australia & New Zealand. “Employers need to seriously consider the physical and emotional impact extra work has on their people. “Can overworked employees really perform at their best? “In many organisations there could be a good business case for adding additional headcount – either permanent or temporary – to get through peak periods and relieve pressure on existing staff,” he said. According to the Hays Salary Guide, 67 per cent of employers say skill shortages are likely to impact the effective operation of their business or department in either a significant (26 per cent) or

minor (41 per cent) way. Turnover has increased in 32 per cent of organisations and 57 per cent of employers would consider employing or sponsoring a qualified overseas candidate in skill-short areas.

The diversification of popular media
TECH & SCIENCE with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au WHO are your favourite popular culture characters, and why? For enthusiasts of all forms of popular media out there, this is a big question guaranteed to spark debate and discussion. And you’d have to be living under a rock not to notice that a huge chunk of that discussion recently centres around diversity and representation. From Doctor Who, Star Wars and Star Trek, to Thor and Spiderman and many others, the popular trend has been to change the characters race, gender or orientation, or add a more diverse cast, to better represent the growing audience for such media, which has traditionally been dominated by males like myself. As a general rule, I’m all for this sort of change up. Changing characters, or adding new characters means more stories and more content to enjoy, with the added benefit of being able to con-
verse with a greater variety of people (being a nerd or geek has historically been a pretty lonely road for many of us). But you would also have to be remiss not to notice that along with a great many of these changes, there has been a significant and often visceral backlash from long standing fans of all the tv series, movies and literature in question - with Star Wars being one of the most prominent examples. As someone who has grown up with all the aforementioned characters and stories, along with a laundry list of others, as well as being the type of person who enjoys writing and creating my own stories, the question of why many people have had such strong reactions to this shift - both positive and negative - has been of great interest to me. For me personally, I’ve found I’ve had a very mixed bag of reactions - ranging from excitement to great disappointment. But it wasn’t until quite recently, when I began playing through some of the new content of World or Warcraft (yeah, I’m a Blizzard fan, sue me) that I felt I’d settled on why I felt this way. ‘Stay awhile and listen’ the art of good storytelling. Without spoiling the story of Warcraft, or boring those who have no idea what I’d talking
◆ STRONG FEMALE LEADS: Laura Dern’s Admiral Holdo and Sylvanas Windrunner (voiced by Patty Mattson) are two examples of diverse characters who have received very different reactions from fans of their respective fictional universes.
about, suffice to say that the writers at Blizzard have embarked on their own version of a Game of Thrones-esque narrative, chock full of betrayals, plot twists, and grand cinematic battles for dominion over the world of Azeroth. It’s engaging stuff, and the two most prominent and interesting characters vying for power happen to be strong, very complex, interesting female characters - namely Sylvanas Windrunner and Jaina Proudmoore. And ‘happen to be’ is the operative phrase here. Unlike many other examples in this push for diversity in popular culture, both characters have a rich and storied history in the fictional universe that has been developed over more than a decade.
Their rise to a prominent position in the narrative makes complete sense, and is congruent with the larger story arc. Contrast this with Laura Dern’s character Admiral Holdo in the Star Wars: The Last Jedi, who was plucked out of nowhere and made leader of the Resistance in the same scene that she’s introduced to the audience. Add to this the many lines of dialog that slam home the fact that she’s female via her criticism of her bumbling male subordinate, and is it truly unfair to criticise the writing of the new Star Wars films as being contrived and overly focussed on diversity virtue signalling at the expense of good storytelling? This, I think, has been the primary sin in the diversification of popular media.
It’s not enough to have diverse characters. They have to be interesting and engaging diverse characters, or else you’re doing a disservice to the people you’re trying to represent. Which is a good segue into the other point I’d like to make. It’s time to r-e-p-r-e-s-e-n-t. The general wisdom surrounding diversity in popular media is that there need to be a greater numbers of characters from a variety of ethnicities and cultural backgrounds in order to make audiences feel like they are being represented. If the discussions surrounding this subject are anything to go by I may be in the minority, but I don’t ever recall being a fan of any particular character solely because they ticked
my ‘identity’ boxes. To put it another way, during my formative years I didn’t identify with Peter Parker/ Spiderman because he was a straight white guy. I identified with him because the virtues he stood for in the face of the struggles and trials he faced were allegorical to my own life. And I know this is true because there were many other characters - from all kinds of backgrounds and identities - that I identified with in the same manner. If we have truly reached a point in time where we require a character to be of the same race, gender, or orientation as ourselves in order to empathise or identify with them, I worry what that means for our multicultural, diverse society.
