FOR Wangaratta couple Justin and Sharon Scholz, good health and community involvement are equally important. The pair decided to become more active and healthy after becoming bogged down with the stress of work and other commitments. “Sharon and I sat down to discuss our lives, and realised that we needed to make some changes that would reduce stress and increase health,” Justin said. After streamlining work commitments, the pair made some “small but healthy” changes to their diet and started to run to lose weight. “We chose running simply because it was convenient, easy and cheap,” Justin said. “All we had to do was walk out our front door with a pair of sneakers on, and didn’t need any fancy equipment or expensive membership fees.” They set their first goal to maintain their focus, entering a 15.2km event in Melbourne in 2007, just months after beginning their new health regime. This quickly led to more and more challenging events, including the Melbourne Marathon, and Sharon then began to embrace distance running with gusto. She ran her first 12 hour event in Coburg in 2008, ending up running for 24 hours and qualifying for the Australian World Championships 24 hour team. Sharon said one of the biggest influences on her active lifestyle was the sense of achievement she felt after completing that first 24 hour race.

10 things to do now to take control of your 2019 taxes WITH the year just beginning, thinking about this year’s tax may be the last thing you want to do. However, mid-year tax planning is essential, according to advice issued recently by Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ). Here’s 10 things you can do now to take control of your 2019 taxes: 1. Look back at last year’s return. Now is the time to plan, so that your next tax return is stress-free. 2. Set up a system. Have a system to keep everything in one place. 3. Adjust your PAYG withholding or hang out for a tax refund? The amount of PAYG tax withheld each pay day determines whether you’ll get a refund, break even, or owe tax when it comes to filing your tax return. 4. Retain your receipts. If you own a business or plan to claim taxable deductions, it is imperative you hold onto your receipts. Whilst receipts are not needed when filing your tax return, they are usually required should the Australian Tax Office (ATO) decide to audit your tax return. 5. Chart your charitable contributions. Keep records of all tax-

deductible gifts and contributions you make over the year. 6. Sort your super savings. Employers pay 9.5 per cent of employee earnings into super, but are you thinking about contributing more for your retirement yet? If you have some funds to spare, extra contributions can be tax effective. 7. Check for new tax rules and policies. Tax and super rules change constantly, so don’t wait till tax time 2019 to check in with your accountant for an update. 8. Don’t make financial decisions based solely on potential tax breaks. The ATO offers plenty of deductions that have the potential to reduce your tax liability. But if you’re spending the cash just to get a tax break, you may end up worse off. 9. Plan for the unexpected. Nobody likes receiving an unwanted tax or super top-up tax bill – let alone an unexpected one. Your local Chartered Accountant can help you anticipate, and plan for, your personal and business tax requirements. 10. Use a Chartered Accountant. When it comes to managing your finances, you want to be sure that your money is being cared for in the best, most professional way possible.

with Mandi McDonald GARDENING SPECIALIST ◆ WISE WATERING: Timing your garden watering routine properly is important for efficient use of water.

Hot weather garden care

WATERING your garden can be a daunting task when the temperature is heading to the 40s. The best time of the day to water - especially the vegetable garden - is early morning. This allows moisture on the leaves to evaporate as the day heats up to help avoid fungal diseases like powdery mildew. When you are out watering, is also a good time to keep on top of weeds. With the rain we had in December, the weeds seem to be growing like crazy and they will be competing for water and nutrients in your garden. Pull a few each time you are out watering so it doesn’t seem like such a big task if you try and do it in one go. Mulch, mulch, mulch! I can’t stress enough how much of a difference mulch makes to the temperature and the moisture in the soil.

Local people, local places

...immerse yourself in the region

Mulch helps keep the soil cooler and ensures less evaporation. Exposed soil around your plants will dry out and and heat up much faster which means you will have to water more. It also helps reduce unwanted weeds. Your plants will be feeling the stress of the hot weather but so are we! Keep yourself hydrated and covered if you are out in the garden and try and avoid heading out in the heat of the day. Even if you have a well watered and maintained garden, some plants will still wilt on very hot days. Plants will generally bounce back once the day begins to cool day in the evening. Most importantly - don’t overwater! This creates weak and shallow rooted plants so check the soil mois-

su

ture before you water so you are not wasting your time and water. Different soils will require more or less water so there is no hard or fast rules on when to water and how much. Fruit fly is always a hot topic at this time of the year. You should well and truly have your fruit fly control in place by now. If you are able, exclusion netting is a really good way to protect your fruit and vegetables. Also make sure you check your traps and lures to monitor fruit fly activity in your garden. Be responsible with any affected fruit and vegetable by disposing of it correctly to help break the cycle. Unfortunately, fruit fly seems to be here to stay, so it is important to stay vigilant to help reduce numbers. Happy gardening.

FEATURE STORY

Parvovirus increase UNFORTUNATELY, the Christmas period has seen parvovirus emerge again in Wangaratta. This is a contagious viral disease of dogs that causes severe gastroenteritis. Symptoms include ongoing vomiting, diarrhoea (often with blood), lethargy and inappetance. Sadly, this disease is often fatal, especially in younger dogs. The incubation period of the disease is 3-7 days from exposure. As this is a viral disease there is no specific cure. Treatment is centred around supportive care. Maintaining hydration in the face of ongoing fluid losses (vomiting and diarrhoea) is the key. Hospitalisation for intravenous fluid therapy as well as preventative antibiotics (to avoid opportunistic infections) and anti-vomiting drugs are often required. Little puppies are the most fragile and can be difficult to save if they have progressed to an advanced stage of disease.

with Tim Craig BVSc VETERINARIAN Older dogs are often a bit tougher, but can still be very sick and require hospitalisation. The saddest part of parvovirus disease is that it is easily preventable. The vaccination against the disease is highly effective. Pups should have a vaccination at 6-8, 10-12 and 16 weeks of age to ensure good immunity. The vaccine can then be boosted at 15 months of age then every three years after this. Pups should also avoid public places where dogs congregate (eg parks, walking tracks) until after their final vaccination. A course of puppy vaccinations costs less than $300, where treatment for parvovirus can easily cost $1000-2000 or more. Parvovirus vaccination is probably the single best thing you can do for your new pup.

“It was such a life altering 24 hours,” she said. Unfortunately, injuries meant she had to withdraw from the team, but Sharon, supported by Justin, has continued to train and compete at a number of endurance running events, both in Australia and internationally, and in 2011 was named World Female Athlete of the Year. “Through all of this, we wondered why a community the size of Wangaratta did not have a fun run, yet other cities and towns in the region did,” Justin said. “We then decided it would be a good way to share our commitment to running with the local community, and help to inspire and encourage people to make changes to their lifestyle for the benefit of their health and wellbeing.” This led to the couple holding an inaugural fun run event in 2011, which has grown exponentially over the past few years. The pair have also put together the popular Ned Kelly Chase, held in October and incorporating both running

Sharon said she was proud to share their love of being active with the local community. “I love the fact that we’re getting people out and active,” Sharon said. “That’s how we measure the success of an event.” Justin added, “the broader community has generally been quite supportive. “There’s nothing better than hearing stories from people that have improved their health and fitness.” These days, the couple remain active, often riding up to 200km and running up to 100km each week throughout Wangaratta and the wider region. Justin said he and Sharon each train individually, but often undertake recreational fitness activities together, such as cycling together, participating with Wangaratta Out and About or Wangaratta BUGs, or walk together to nearby towns, enjoying a coffee or meal on the way.

He added that he remained passionate about the benefits of an active and healthy lifestyle. “I think that there are a lot of people in the community that could benefit from making just a small change to their diet and adding a small amount of committed movement to their normal day,” Justin said. “Though it might feel difficult in the early stages, the benefits in stamina, concentration and attitude that eventually result from this make it all worthwhile. “Being fit and healthy allows me to get far more done in a day or week than I ever used to when I was overweight and unfit, and somehow I think my attitude towards life is more positive, encouraging and supportive as a result.” The Wangaratta Marathon and Fun Runs are being held in Wangaratta on Sunday, February 24. GONE FISHING

CATCH OF THE WEEK â—† Jordan Wingrave recently caught this 52cm Murray cod on cheese while ďŹ shing near the Pioneer Bridges.

SUDOKU PUZZLE 7 6 WANGARATTA â—† WINNERS ARE GRINNERS: Former Wangaratta resident Andrew Wolstenholme came home to Wangaratta and took the kids ďŹ shing at North Beaches last week where they managed several Murray cod just ďŹ shing from the sand bar with cheese one afternoon.

Turning up the heat on Murray cod THIS heat is killing me. It is truly disgusting! I love the things that I can do in the summer months, but despise this relentless heat. The Murray cod ďŹ shing which has been absolutely fantastic this season has really slowed down a lot over the last week or so, most likely due to the heat. This is not uncommon in North East Victoria and happens around this time every year. If you are ďŹ shing in the streams and rivers of North East Victoria at the moment and doing it tough, you are not alone. Some people have had luck, and a few cod are still being caught

however the catches are nowhere near as consistent as they were a couple of weeks ago. I do believe that as soon as we get a bit of cooler weather, just enough to take the edge of this heat, that the cod ďŹ shing will improve. In the meantime, Lake Mulwala and the Murray River might be a better option with faster water that might be a bit cooler. I went to Lake Buffalo for a few hours one afternoon last week. I caught one small redďŹ n on a Strike Tiger nymph soft plastic and had a few others follow my lure in. They were all small.

The ďŹ shing there was very slow, however, I am expecting that to improve over the coming months as the water level starts to drop. Both Lake Buffalo and Lake William Hovell tend to ďŹ sh better later in summer. Watch this space for reports from both lakes over the coming months. Trout ďŹ shing reports have been very few and far between with this heat really slowing them down. Trout do not like the heat. I did see a couple of photos of some lovely coloured brown trout caught y ďŹ shing at Pretty Valley Dam at Falls Creek last week though. What y they were caught on I could not tell you.

WINE TALK

TECH & SCIENCE

Andrew Buller Wines Cannobie Chardonnay 2016 THIS year it was exciting to see a big box with my name on it under the Christmas tree and to find a state-of-the-art mixer hiding inside. The shiny, new machine was quickly given pride of place on the kitchen bench and it was so much fun putting it to work, effortlessly whipping up egg whites for another delicious pavlova. While it certainly looks great, I couldn’t help feeling a little sad for the mixer it’s meant to replace, which is still working as well as it did when my grandmother used it in the 1960s. I’ve decided despite its five decades of service it won’t be retired, but spruced up and brought out on special occasions. In the same way, while it’s exciting to sample the latest wine varieties, the classics will always have their place and purpose,

with Anita McPherson like a thoroughly enjoyable Chardonnay. The Andrew Buller Wines Cannobie Chardonnay is golden in colour and exhibits that stone fruit signature from the start, with ripe peach and a hint of vanilla and honeycomb in the bouquet. There is more stone fruit and creamy nougat qualities in the enduring flavour, along with hints of citrus like grapefruit on the way to the dry, crisp finish. It’s ideal with chicken dishes, a bowl of crispy whitebait or a perhaps a simple, old fashioned cheese platter. There’s a reason classics have longevity and should never be taken for granted. Available from Rutherglen outlets, the cellar door, or visit Andrew Buller Wines on Facebook.

Some obscure elements

CARBON, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen - the famous elements atop the periodic table steal all the headlines, but how much do you know about their more obscure brothers and sisters? This week we take a look at some of the lesser know elements that make up the periodic table. Praseodymium: Atomic Number 59 If you’ve ever welded metal, thank praseodymium that you can still see. Praseodymium is mixed with its periodic next-door neighbor, neodymium, to create didymium glass. The glass is transparent yellow but blocks infrared radiation, so didymium is used in safety goggles for glassblowing and welding masks. Osmium: Atomic Number 76 Osmium, an obscure metal, was once the go-to material for phonograph needles, back in the early days of recorded music when 78 RPM discs made of wax were in vogue. Once wax gave way to vinyl records, osmium fell out of favor, and styluses were made from sapphire or diamond. However, levels of the relatively rare element appear to be rising in the environment--it’s produced by the platinumrefining process used to make catalytic converters in cars. Antimony: Atomic Number 51 Along with arsenic and mercury, antimony is one of the deadliest

elements on the table. But like osmium, this substance is also intertwined with the history of music. For one thing, antimony bears the distinction of being the first element named in Tom Lehrer’s “The Elements” song from the 1950s, in which Lehrer sang all the elements of the periodic table to a Gilbert and Sullivan tune. And, in the grand tradition of horribly misguided medical cure-alls, doctors often prescribed antimony as medicine. One such patient who took it was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The genius composer was treated with antimony for his depression and fever shortly before dying at the age of 35. Beryllium: Atomic Number 4 With an atomic number of four, beryllium feels like the odd one out on this list. But the fourth element gets lost between its more famous single-digit companions like oxygen or helium. NASA often uses beryllium because it’s a light metal and non-magnetic. The much delayed James Webb Space Telescope, the Hubble telescope’s successor-to-be, will carry 18 mirrors made of beryllium when it heads to space in a launch scheduled for 2021. Palladium: Atomic Number 46 In 1989, physicists Stanley Pons and

No job too big or small. We can handle it. Get

Martin Fleischmann dropped a bombshell of an announcement, claiming to have achieved desktop cold fusion. The energy crisis was over; all you needed was palladium electrodes and heavy water to achieve the room-temperature fusion of deuterium, a heavier isotope of hydrogen. It would be a new and clean way to power the planet. There was just this one problem - no other scientists could reproduce the two physicists’ results, and cold fusion research took a huge P.R. hit. But while the cold fusion fiasco destroyed the scientists’ careers, palladium lives on in simpler applications like electronics and dentistry. Molybdenum: Atomic Number 42 In World War I, cavalry warfare gave way to primitive tanks for the first time. The British had the first tanks, but their manganese-steel plates couldn’t take the full shock of a shell. Fortunately for the Brits, their ally, France, had created molybdenum-steel armor plating that could provide better protection at one-third the thickness. This WWI tank sits in London’s Imperial War Museum. Molybdenum has an exotic connection as well - a Russian mission called Luna-24 turned up a minute particle of nearly pure molybdenum on the moon, the first time it had been located there.

Welcome to the celebrity jungle CHANNEL CHAT

THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS:

SHOW: I’m A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! NETWORK: WIN TIMESLOT: Sunday, 7.30pm; various regular timeslots.

The Orville (SBS Viceland, Friday, 9pm) This live action sci-fi comedy from Seth MacFarlane, now in its second season, will raise a chuckle for anyone who is a Star Trek fan, or is just looking for some entertaining sitcom fun. Rosehaven (ABC iView, new season starting January 30 on ABC) I am late to the party and have only just started watching this gentle and awkward comedy, but it is a good watch for fans of homegrown humour.

with Kylie Wilson

I MUST admit that for the most part, I have avoided watching I’m A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! I’ve never had a high tolerance for reality television in general, and most of the “celebrities” they do attract usually don’t interest me. That changed recently when I saw snippets of the latest British season, which featured one of my favourite actors, John

Barrowman (from Doctor Who and Arrow), and made me a fan of Anne “The Governess” Hegerty of The Chase, due to seeing her deal with various personal issues during her time in the jungle with emotional honesty and resolve. Seeing personalities such as these adjust to life in a bare bones, harsh jungle environment was a lot of fun to watch, and really gives you a more nu-

◆ IN THE JUNGLE: Hosts Chris Brown and Julia Morris helm the action in the Australian version of I’m A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!

anced view behind the public façade each individual celebrity might display to the world. This year’s set of celebrities on the Australian version

include Richard Reid, Jacqui Lambie, Luke Jacobz, Ajay Rochester, Dermott Brereton, Natasha Exelby, Justin Lacko, Justine Schofield, Tahir Bilgic

Comedians of the World (Netflix, streaming) These half hour sets are great to experience both established and new comedians. My personal favourites so far have been Urzila Carlson, Nicole Byers, Nazeem Hussain, Nick Swardson and K Trevor Wilson. and Sam Dastyari, as well as Gogglebox critics Angie Kent and Yvie Jones. Your enjoyment of the show will all depend on your feelings about the celebrities involved

in the first place, but if you can handle the stressed celebrities, cringe inducing food challenges and the creepy crawlies in the jungle, this might just be your cup of tea.
