FOR Carboor resident Libby Jones, the six months since her breast cancer diagnosis in December last year has been a whirlwind of surgery and chemotherapy treatments. But in the midst of hospital visits, and losing her hair and eyebrows as a result of her treatments, she has been touched by the generosity of others. Earlier this year she took the opportunity to take part in the Look Good…Feel Better program, hosted at Villa Maria in Wangaratta, which benefits cancer patients from throughout the North East. “It’s not the sort of thing I would normally do, but the people were so supportive and kind,” she said. “It gives you a warm, fuzzy feeling…that people are thinking of you.” During the workshop, Libby did everything from try on wigs and head coverings to learn how to draw on eyebrows and adapt her makeup routine during her illness. She said learning these skills, and trying out some new looks, helped boost her self-esteem during a difficult time in her life. “For me, it does give you more confidence,” Libby said. “It means so much, and the volunteers were wonderful. continued page |

HOME SWEET HOME: Roger and Karen Neate enjoying their diverse garden.

What’s in your garden: Silver birches, ashes, gingko, a few different varieties of magnolias, a fruit and citrus orchard, vegetable garden, natives (to attract wildlife), irises and more. What do you enjoy about gardening: Roger: It’s relaxing and satisfying. Karen: I like seeing the seasons in the garden. Favorite plant/spot in your garden: We like what the grandkids

have called “Grammy’s House” – a sheltered seating area overlooking the fishpond and the garden. Water saving/conservation tip: Lots of mulch, try and keep the weeds down. We have bore water, but we still conserve all we can. Your tips to keep gardens in top shape: Mulching, pruning, doing a bit when you can. It’s nice to be able to work as a team with a big garden like this.

AS the leaves of deciduous trees change color and fall to the ground, gather them up and use them to make nutrient rich compost. Not only is it beneficial for the garden by enriching the soil, it also helps the environment by recycling and reducing organic garden and household waste, otherwise destined for landfill. There are various composting systems on the market ranging from bins and tumblers to worm farms. These take up little space and keep the pile neat. The tumblers make turning the compost easier and protect it from soaking rains. Another option is to make a compost heap directly on the ground. This method allows the soil organisms and worms to enter and help in the decomposition process. This is suitable for larger gardens which generate more organic waste. A simple frame can be constructed from timber or wooden pellets. Even garbage bins with their bases removed and air holes poked in the sides can be used. Successful compost requires five main ingredients: t nitrogen rich greens, which include lawn clippings, plant foliage, weeds and kitchen scraps; t carbon rich browns like straw, dead leaves, woody twigs, newspaper, egg

shells, wood ash and coffee grounds; t oxygen; t moisture; and t time Compost breaks down best when the components are added in thin layers, similar to making lasagne. As it breaks down the leafy green matter and the harder brown matter decompose and blend together to form a nutritious and natural soil. Start with a thick layer of course material, like straw or plant clippings, to help with air flow and drainage. Then build up thin layers of greens and browns, watering each layer as it is added. Include a layer or two of garden soil or finished compost to encourage bacteria to grow to kick start the decomposition process. The compost heap needs to be kept damp, but not wet so cover it during periods of heavy rain. After about two weeks start turning the heap every few days bringing the outside to the centre. The compost is ready when it is fine and crumbly with an earthy smell. Happy gardening.

Preparing for baby when you have a dog

GIVING BACK: Judy Murray of Wangaratta has been a volunteer with the program for 10 years.

“It’s a brightening experience.” Libby said her breast cancer diagnosis, missed by a mammogram but pinpointed by her doctor’s examination and an ultrasound, underlined the importance of regular breast self-examination for women of all ages. And she said the Look Good…Feel Better free national community service program, run by the Cancer Patients Foundation, that helps to improve the wellbeing and confidence of people undergoing treatment for any sort of cancer, is wonderful to have. The program provides free workshops for women, men and teens to help them manage appearance-related side effects that can be caused by cancer treatment. The workshops include sessions on skin care, makeup, wigs and head coverings to help patients face cancer with confidence, and participants receive a kit full of donated cosmetic products as well as advice and assistance from trained volunteers. program for 10 years, drawing on the skills she learned working as a photographic model in her youth. She loves seeing people enjoy spoiling themselves, and forgetting about their illness for a few hours. “It’s really relaxed, everyone’s on the same journey,” she said. “We’re just there to help them, but they give us just as much laughter and enjoyment as we give them.” Sessions are held in Wangaratta four times a year, and the next Wangaratta session will take place on May 14. Those interested in taking part in the program as a participant, or cosmetic qualified volunteer, should go to www.lgfb.org.au, seek out the social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube, or call 1800 650960. You can teach the dog to sit and wait at the door or teach the dog that the room is off bounds by keeping the door closed or putting up a baby gate. . 5. Start to get the dog used to ‘toddler handling’. Toddlers can be quite rough with pets and like to grab and pinch the dog’s fur, ears and tails especially. You want to gradually accustom the dog to gentle pulling, pushing, pinching and poking. Each time you do this to your dog you should give it a treat and reward it. 6. No matter how well you think you know your dog, never ever leave it alone with a new baby. Information for our Members & their Guests

THE presence of a new baby can be unsettling for the family dog. New routines, smells, sights and sounds, as well as increased competition for attention can lead to changes in the behavior of your pet. It can also be a concerning time for parents; how will the dog react to the baby and how can the risks to the baby be minimised? This article provides some tips and tricks to prepare your pet for a new baby. 1. Teach your dog to sit, down, stay, ‘leave it’ and ‘go away’ so it can be more easily controlled when the baby is present. 2. Mix up the dog’s schedule, as this is likely to change when you operate on ‘baby time’. Feed and take the dog for walks at different times each day. 3. Think about a few things in advance. If your dog sleeps in your bed but you do not want it there when the baby arrives, teach it to get off the bed now. Buy a comfortable bed for the dog and place it nearby. 4. Decide on the amount of access you want the dog to have to the baby’s room.

7 5 PRETTY SPOT: The Mitta Mitta River at the Katie Peters Reserve on the Mitta North Road is quickly becoming a very popular camping spot, and trout fishing has been very good in this area in recent weeks. This beautiful new reserve was named after the late Katie Peters, who was tragically killed while fighting the Harrietville bushfire 14 months ago.

BY ROB ALEXANDER, WANGARATTA THE Ovens and King rivers both look exceptionally good in and around Wangaratta at the moment. The Ovens River is flowing quite a bit faster than usual due to increased outflows from Lake Buffalo at the end of the irrigation season. Despite both rivers looking great, they are fishing very, very slowly. Only the odd Murray cod is being caught, with fishing having really dropped off over the last few weeks with the drop in water temperature.

We are approaching that time of year when only the really skilled and dedicated Murray cod fishermen will pick up a few fish in the rivers, and everybody else will struggle. I have not heard any reports from the Kiewa or Broken rivers this week, however I would imagine it would be a similar story. I have however heard some good reports from Lake Mulwala where my father and a few other blokes are staying for the week. In the first hours on their first day on the water they had managed to catch three cod. My uncle Gary trolled one small cod in deep water, while my dad caught two small cod casting spinnerbaits in two metres of water. So while the rivers are slowing down Lake Mulwala is picking up and fishing quite well.

I have had a couple of other reports during the week from Lake Mulwala, including a 63cm Murray cod caught on a surface lure after sunset near the Majors Creek boat ramp. I have been told that a few redfin have also been caught at Lake Hume. The Mitta Mitta River has been fishing quite well for trout upstream of Eskdale, with a few people saying green and gold Celta’s are working well. I was up there two weeks ago with a friend on a photography trip, and we watched a man land a nice brown trout. The Hook from Albury has also told me he has been getting a lot of reports of trout being caught in the Mitta Mitta River as well.

CD

Self titled by We Are Catchers WE Are Catchers is a longplayer that easily could have come about in 2014 or 1966. Wistful and hopelessly romantic, it’s the soundtrack to the city of Liverpool daydreaming under a different sky, a record that makes sense of the undeniable melodic and rhythmic connections that link two of rock’n’roll’s richest wellsprings – Liverpool and Los Angeles.

BOOK

Mama: Dispatches from the Frontline of Love by Antonella Gambotto-Burke INTERNATIONALLY published writer Antonella Gambotto-Burke spent her pregnancy wondering if she could love her child as deeply as her Prada mules – but it was the turning point of her life. Mama is a celebration of the joys of motherhood, an indispensable guide to meeting even the most difficult parenting challenges with love, and a must read book for every mother who wishes to parent more consciously. Published by Arbon Publishing

The stork files RECENTLY a Facebook friend who is pregnant with her third child, commented that her young daughter (age 6) had asked how the baby had gotten into her mother’s belly. My FB friend was freaking out a little. After all, what do you say when they ask these kinds of questions? How can you make sure you’re honest but sensitive to their age and level of understanding? How can you know if you’ve given them too much information or not enough? It’s one of those tricky issues that pop up in the life of a parent. Most of us just muddle through somehow. When my kids were little, we didn’t have the Internet to do an instant survey of what our wide-ranging cyber community might think about any issues we were dealing with. We were pretty much on our own, apart from the well-meaning (and yes, often sage) advice of friends and family. I was reminded about all this as I read the comments posted below my FB friend’s question. A few friends made joking comments and some went straight into advice mode, God bless ‘em! I’m not sure if I was much help, though. I just related one of my own ‘birds and bees’ stories from days of yore, as follows: When our Jack Russell bitch was pronounced pregnant, Number One Son (who was about seven at the time), asked the inevitable “How did she get the baby dogs in her tummy?” “Well, you see,” I said calmly, and delightedly thinking this was a great way to cover off on the whole dog/human sexuality thing in one fell swoop and thus get me off the hook later: “When girl dogs get to a certain age, their body starts telling them it’s time to have some babies. “When this happens, the girl dog needs to meet a boy dog and together they do something called ‘mating’. “The boy dog’s little swimmers – or sperm

BY CATHERINE WARNOCK as they are officially known - meet up with the girl dog’s teensy, weensy eggs and presto! “A baby dog is made! Simple, huh?” Number One nodded sagely and said “Ahh!” and I assumed the matter was put to rest. “That wasn’t so hard, Mummy!” I congratulated myself. “You are a genius! “And thank you Maddie the Dog for sneaking off and getting yourself preggie. “You’ve sure saved me some embarrassment!” However, it turned out I was perhaps not quite as clear as I thought I’d been. It was several months later and I was heavily pregnant with Number Three. Number One watched with fascination as the baby did somersaults inside my tummy. “So how did the baby get in there?” he asked, all wide eyed and innocent. “Oh, surely you haven’t forgotten!” I said trying to sound cool and casual. “We talked about all this when Maddie had her puppies. Remember?” “Nuh,” he replied, with a bewildered expression. Uh oh! I thought we’d done with this, but apparently not. And the problem was that this time I was going to have to explain what Daddy and I had been up to, not the dog. It was going to be a lot trickier! But just as I was about to start forming some very carefully chosen words, Number One suddenly had an epiphany. “Oh, yeah! Now I remember! You and Dad mated. “Just like Maddie and the boy dog!” I wasn’t sure whether to laugh or give him the whole spiel. In the end I just smiled and said “sort of” and he went happily on his way. It was a few more years before he got the full story. To which his response was “Eeeeuw! You and Dad did that? Gross!”

WINE TALK

IN MY KITCHEN

Michelini Wines

Slow braised beef with red wine

Sparkling Merlot Around $20.00

WITH ANITA McPHERSON Michelini Sparkling Merlot has a rich, dark and deep purple color and pours leaving a delightfully pink tinged froth on top. The flavor is a gently sweet combination of ripe berries with hints of blackcurrant, plum and raspberry and it has a full and lush feel in the mouth. What’s also remarkable is how well received it is by a wide cross section of people who are normally resolute about their red, white and still wine preferences. This wine seems to be a crowd pleaser, and with roast pork, it is either a match made in heaven, or something the devil is likely to win you over with. Find out more at www. micheliniwines.com.au

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

Gas works open, 1888

AFTER a number of false starts and frustrations, the gas was finally turned on in Wangaratta on this day in 1888. The ceremony was performed by the wife of the mayor, Mrs Thompson, at 7.30 in the evening.

NOW is the time for hearty dishes, these can be made early in the week and the taste gets better as they sit in the fridge. I serve this with mashed potatoes with chives added. Delicious! Method A day ahead, marinate the beef. Bring the wine to the boil in a large saucepan, then boil until reduced by a third to remove the alcohol (takes about 8-10 minutes). Leave to cool for about one hour. Mix the beef, carrots, celery, baby onions, garlic, crushed peppercorns and bouquet garni together in one or two large bowls, then pour the cooled red wine over the top. Cover with cling film, put in the fridge and leave to marinate for 24 hours, if you can. Next day, place a large colander over a large bowl and tip the beef mixture in to drain off the marinade. Leave to drain for ½ hour to remove excess liquid. Pre heat oven to 160 degrees Celsius. Separate the beef, vegetables and herbs and pat dry with kitchen paper. Reserve the marinade liquid. Season the beef with the flour with salt added. In a large heavy-based casserole over a high heat on top of the stove, add the butter, then colour the beef for 5-7 minutes (in batches if necessary). With a slotted spoon, transfer the beef to a plate and set aside. Add the drained vegetables to the casserole. Lower the heat to medium-high and cook for 5 minutes until lightly colored. Add the beef back to the vegetables, pour in the marinade and the herbs, bring the sauce to the boil and skim if necessary. Cover with a lid, turn oven to 130 degrees and cook for three hours. If the sauce is too runny remove meat and

vegetables, boil the sauce until it has reduced to a thicker sauce, return the meat and vegetables. When cooked, remove the herbs. Taste the sauce for seasoning. Add the mushrooms and bacon, and return to oven for half an hour. Before serving, sprinkle with the parsley and serve piping hot with mashed potato. For the Marinade >2 bottles of full bodied red wine slices >2 medium carrots, cut into thick s >2 celery sticks cut into thick slice ed and left >30 baby onions or shallots peel whole whole >9 garlic cloves, peeled but left >Black pepper ley stalks, 4 >1 bouquet garni (made with pars together bay leaves and 6 thyme sprigs, tied g) with strin For the garnish >50gm unsalted butter med >300gm button mushrooms, trim n, like >150gm finely sliced smoked baco pancetta, freshly fried parsley >2 tbsp freshly chopped flat leaf

INGREDIENTS

AFTER too many courses and probably a little too much wine, a poll was conducted around the dinner table as to what were some of the most evocative and appetising aromas one could encounter. There was plenty of enthusiastic debate, with surprising simple foods like a sausage sizzling, bread baking and bacon frying topping the list. Even the humble tuck shop pie warmer scored a few votes, and it couldn’t have got any plainer than someone cooking toast on a cold morning. Taking it a step further, I suggested it was hard to beat the aroma of roasting meat, and especially suckling pig, which is what we had just consumed. For me, pork and its crispy crackle is an aroma, flavor and texture combo that’s hard to beat, and enjoying it with sparkling merlot is a slam dunk.

Glandular fever recovery

Government continues clean-up

Glandular fever is a virus that often affects young adults. Initially someone with glandular fever will feel tired, have a sore throat and tonsils and probably lose their appetite. This virus is easily tested for on a blood test, and the most common advice is to stop and rest until you feel better. This is definitely important, but for some, can still take months of resting for an improvement to occur. Natural medicines are very effective at treating this kind of virus, and for the most part, the naturopath will work on a convalescent type approach, which is supportive to bed rest, but allows the body to respond faster and recover more fully. Naturopaths top 5 tips for glandular fever recovery: 1. Prescription of herbs and nutrients: these fight the virus, support the drainage of the glands and rebuild energy. YEP tea – yarrow, elder and peppermint is great for the symptoms and fever of glandular fever. 2. Increase foods to support the appetite: This is really important, because if you don’t eat enough you will be tired and you won’t have

WITH SOPHIE ATKIN,

LAST week I talked about an increase in pension age. Now it is the turn of those on disability pensions to be the focus of government. I noticed that of newspapers and on-line polls last week, 80 per cent were against any increase in the pension age eligibility. But now we are seeing a concerted effort to look at the $15 billion that is spent on disability support pensions and whether this needs an overhaul. Social Services Minister Kevin Andrews makes no secret of the fact he considers this the most troublesome welfare payment and things may change in the May budget. I must say that some, who are in receipt of this pension, are able to do some parttime work, but have been protected by their ability to convince their GP that they cannot work. I think the government is moving in the right direction by having an independent assessment carried out by health professionals employed in the Department of Human Services – but it must be truly independent. Whether this can sort out the ones who genuinely need high level support and those who should be able to perform at least some type of work remains to be seen. Mr Andrews is trying to catch those abusing the system before they become entrenched in welfare payments, as he is concerned disability pension costs would blow out by billions over the next decade. More than 830,000 Australians receive the pension now. Singles receive as much as $766 a fortnight compared with $510 for those on Newstart.

NATUROPATH

NATURAL NUTRIENTS: Fresh juices such as carrot juice can help aid the recovery of your immune system.

enough nutrients to allow the immune system to do its job effectively. Increase ginger, chicken soups, hot lemon and honey tea, spicy pumpkin soup and fresh juices with beetroot, carrot and celery, red meat stews. 3. Eliminate foods that compromise the immune system: sugar, fatty foods, caffeine and refined white carbohydrates all deplete the immune system and make recovery slow. It is important to avoid these foods until you are completely recovered, 4. Support the liver: Glandular fever is a virus

that lies dormant in the liver and progresses to the throat when you are run down. To protect your liver from the virus, increase the above herbs, foods and nutrients. 5. Continue to rest even once you feel your energy returning and follow up with a stress management plan. The main reasons we see GF relapsing, is because someone has not managed their stress well or has hit the exercise too fast too soon. We can work with you to devise a program that supports your exercise and lifestyle needs, at the right time.

Suffering from Aching legs? Leg cramps? Unsightly veins?

By KEN CLARKE, WANGARATTA CERTIFIED PRACTICING ACCOUNTANT

kclarke@alphalink.com.au It is interesting to note that on a visit to New Zealand he was able to observe that some pensioners suffering from “episodic illnesses such as depression were given monthly or quarterly medical certificates rather than getting two year “set and forget pensions as happens here. Australian Council of Social Service chief executive Cassandra Goldie says she will support any measures by the government to “invest in disability pensioners to help them return to the workforce. But she was concerned that subjecting disability pensioners to more regular assessments could end up “exacerbating their mental health condition. Patrick McClure, who is overseeing the Federal Government’s review of Australia’s welfare system, has been instructed by Mr Andrews to have a good look at some of New Zealand’s inspired ideas. But Disability Discrimination Commissioner Graeme Innes says the government was “punishing some of the most vulnerable people in society by tightening checks on the disability pensions. Whatever the outcomes of the review, I think we are going to see the biggest shakeup in eligibility for all types of pensions and benefits in the Budget and for those a lot younger than myself, there is going to be a lot of pain I am sure. I just hope our parliamentarians lead the way and show restraint in pay rises for themselves over the next few years so the public have confidence in what they are trying to achieve.
