AN energy efficient home which makes the most of its natural outlook while providing its owners with a comfortable, low maintenance lifestyle, offers plenty of ideas to others wanting to live light and lessen their impact on their environment. When John and Lucy Gannon decided to move from Melbourne, they were looking for a location which was still within reach of their extended family spread around the country and overseas. With family members in Mansfield and Melbourne, and friends who, like them, enjoy hitting the road in their motorhomes, Wangaratta’s location on the Hume Highway made practical sense. It was when John found himself requiring the services of Northeast Health Wangaratta a few years ago that Lucy had time to talk to locals and explore the rural city they now call home. When she discovered a block of land at the end of a court and saw the outlook to the Three Mile Creek, the attraction was immediate. “As soon as I saw this I knew that we could live here,” she said. “We were very particular about the orientation and wanted to face north to capture the winter sun.” John and Lucy said Wangaratta made sense for them as it provided all the services they were looking for right now, as well as everything they may need in the future. A structural engineer for over 50 years who has designed residential and commercial projects for others, John had firm ideas on what he wanted in his own home. He said in the past providing suitably sized accommodation for the couple and their nine children had always been at the forefront of his mind, but with the children now off and living their own lives, this home could be designed just for the two of them. “We’ve bought and sold about five times in our married lives and every one of those houses we’ve modified internally,” he said.

Milk fever in cattle MILK fever or hypocalcaemia is a disease that is caused by low levels of calcium in the body. Cattle will commonly get this after or just before calving because they are creating large amounts of milk which requires large amounts of calcium. This will occur very commonly if cattle are grazing lush green pasture that has rapidly grown as this has poor levels of calcium available. Clinical signs of milk fever can vary but in the early stages they include staggery or wobbly cattle who are nervous or aggressive and can be slightly off their feed. As the disease develops and gets worse the clinical signs progress to cows going down and sitting on their sternum, being depressed, having tremors in their muscles and an S bend in the neck.

with Dr Keely, Ovens and Kiewa Veterinary Hospital When the disease becomes very serious, they will be laying on their side, unresponsive and sometimes bloated. These clinical signs can develop rapidly, and cows can deteriorate very quickly which can be fatal. Treatment of this disease includes supplementing calcium as well as other minerals such as phosphorus, magnesium and glucose under the guidance or by a veterinarian. If any cows in your herd show signs similar to this then contact your local veterinarian for advice on treatment, management and prevention of milk fever. Each case is individual and as such there is no ‘one’ treatment.

with The Foundation of National Parks and Wildlife ◆ ALLURING: Shrubs such as this Grevillea are perfect for attracting birds and insects to your garden.

Nectar giving shrubs SHRUBS are an important element of any good garden and provide food, shelter and nesting sites for many different kinds of birds, insects, butterflies and other creatures. Shrubs are particularly important if you want to see small birds in your garden, as these tiny creatures need somewhere to hide from predators such as cats and bigger birds. They also provide a crucial food source and encourage a healthy ecosystem in your backyard. Some great nectar giving shrubs include: Kangaroo Paw - Anigozanthos spp. These plants have lovely, bright flowers in shades of yellow, orange, red, green and pink, which attract honeyeaters and nectar eating birds such as the Superb Fairy-wren and Eastern Spinebill. Twiggy Heath Myrtle - Baeckea virgata. This plant will attract and feed nectar-feeding butterflies, beetles and tree-frogs. Banksias - Banksia spp. There are many different kinds of Banksias and they grow to different heights and sizes, so do a bit of research to get a local native one of an appropriate size for your garden. Banksias provide larval

food for butterflies. Birds love to hide in these dense shrubs and they help protect smaller birds from predators. Honeyeaters take nectar and insects from Banksias. Some Banksias also provide seeds for Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos. Common Appleberry - Billardiera scandens. This climber will feed birds such as the Lewins Oriole, Olive-backed Oriole, and Satin Bowerbird. Butterflies love to drink its nectar, and skinks eat its soft fruits. Sunset Serenade - Boronia muelleri. This plant attracts several different kinds of butterflies, particularly Painted Lady Butterflies and Common Brown Butterflies. Callistemons, also known as Bottlebrushes - Callistemon spp. Callistemons are famous for their brushy, showy flowers, which are overflowing with nectar and attract nectar eating birds and honeyeaters. They’re also good plants for birds to shelter and sometimes nest in, and they also attract insects which birds love to eat. Some Callistemon provide seeds for rosellas, and fruits for some parrots. Some Callistemons grow quite large, so make sure to

get a local native one which will suit your garden. Correas, also known as Native Fuchsia - Correa spp. These plants with bell-shaped flowers attract honeyeaters and nectar feeding birds. Some parrots eat the flowers and some provide a haven for lizards. Grevilleas - Grevillea spp. Provides nectar for birds such as honeyeaters like Wattlebirds, Eastern Spinebills, and Noisy Friarbirds, and insects. Parrots and rosellas feed on the seeds. Attracts insects which small birds like Scrub wrens will happily feed on. Kunzeas - Kunzea spp. Attracts nectar-feeding birds and insects. Leptospermum ‘Horizontalis’ Leptospermum ‘Horizontalis’. Attracts nectar-feeding beetles. Silky Tea-tree - Leptospermum lanigerum. Attracts nectar feeding and seed eating birds and nectar-feeding beetles. Grass Tree - Xanthorrhoea australis. Honey eaters and numerous colourful beetles and insects are attracted to the nectar rich flowers. Insectivorous birds are attracted to the insects. Lorikeets feed on the soft seeds and Rosellas on the seed capsules. Antechinus feed on attracted insects.

Indigo Vineyard 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon FOR the last few weeks, each time I’ve walked down the driveway I’ve been keeping a lookout for the resident magpie that likes to swoop. He usually starts really early in the season so I was surprised there had been no sign of his family for a while, when they are usually warbling and arguing with the neighbours. Then I started to worry about them; wondering if they’d been injured or perhaps finally run out of a town by the pushy pair who live on the other side of the paddock. But then yesterday as I walked down the driveway, down he flew from the top of a pine tree like a bomber pilot squarely aimed at the enemy, and he nearly took my scalp off. So now I’m in protective gear and waving a white flag as he stands between me and the letterbox. While others might be bothered, I’m kind of glad things are back to normal because the familiar is comforting right now. Like steak and chips and a bottle of Indigo Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine was made with grapes grown in a vineyard just a few kilometres from the cellar door located in Everton Upper, off the Beechworth Road.

with Anita McPherson

I like this medium bodied wine’s deep colour and its aromas of blackberry and cassis fruit. That fruitiness extends to the flavour but it’s also earthy and savoury, with a spicy cedar or perhaps even eucalypt quality to it which bears thinking about. It also has a nice weight, enjoyable mouthfeel and good length of flavour. Pour a big glass - it’s needed sometimes to settle the nerves.

Indigo Vineyard - About $23 a bottle.

Hydration in a mask SYMPTOMS such as feeling dizzy, tired, dry in the mouth and headaches whilst wearing cloth masks are being described by many of our patients. Interestingly, these symptoms all being the direct cause of dehydration. Prior to COVID-19 we found many of our patients responded well to these symptoms with adequate hydration, which sounds very simple, but can take a bit of work for various reasons. Mask wearing is really important right now and hopefully with a few weeks of practice you are now finding them easier to wear and awareness

about how little water you may be drinking. We thought we would share some tips how to hydrate well for those who need a reminder to drink more water when wearing masks - not less! 1. Stop using masks as an excuse to not drink. If you feel dry, socially distance, take your mask off and drink. You feel dry in a mask if you are dehydrated or mouth breathing. Use this cue to drink. 2. Set a timer on your phone or a note on your computer in your breaks especially when working from home. Without set breaks and the ‘tearoom’ many people report actually spending

less time eating and drinking. If you work from home you won’t be wearing your mask as much and you are still entitled to breaks - take them. 3. Fill up a one litre bottle of water and keep it on your desk/in your bag and drink two bottles daily. 4. Use flavours and electrolytes to help hydrate: lemon juice, a splash of fruit juice, cold herbal tea and magnesium powder all help water taste good. 5. Herbal teas are great hydrators. Rather than having just one cup a day, fill up a thermos or teapot and drink three to four cups. This ticks off one litre of water easily.

Build a smart home and the living is easy

Ŷ

From page 1

“We made a virtue of never increasing the roof areas - instead reorganising everything inside. “This was the last opportunity (in my eighties) to build something just for us.” What John designed was a modern home with a central, open plan kitchen and living zone, featuring Tasmanian oak hardwood floors, which opened onto a north facing timber deck that has views across a reserve and walking track to the creek. Extending on one side is a master bedroom, spacious ensuite and laundry, while on the other side is a zone for guests with two double bedrooms sharing a central bathroom which can be completely closed off. John said privacy was para-

mount in the overall design and the bedroom zones are angled slightly so as not to impede on the views from the deck, yet still not being overlooked by neighbours. An ornamental grape vine growing over that deck provides shade in summer without impeding the light in winter, and it is also perfectly sheltered from the wind. Design considerations include “airlock” entries into the living zone which protect its ambient temperature from whatever the weather outside. There are also highly efficient low emittance double glazed windows which are aluminium-framed, and generous amounts of insulation have been used in the walls and roof. Carefully placed south facing windows provide light and air-

flow and are fitted with adjustable external louvres and remote controlled internal blinds, while the minimal west facing windows are also fitted with exterior timber blinds. Reverse cycle air conditioning is available although rarely needed, while ceiling fans also help moderate the temperature and air flow. The home has suspended timber floors so it sits lightly on the sloping block and a 38,000 litre water tank is positioned underground so as not to take up valuable garden space. A solar system provides the power with natural gas back up if needed. A clever solution to address a spoon drain running down the side of the home was for John to create an attractive boardwalk next to what appears to

be a rocky riverbed. While at just 14.5 squares under the roofline, the size of this three year old composite fibreclad home is modest by most housing estate standards, there is abundant storage, and its smart design earned it a seven star energy rating. “We don’t need a big house that we have to heat, cool and clean at our age,” said Lucy. “This is not a frivolous house, but it’s timeless - and it’s fabulous to live in as far as maintenance and practicality go. “Even with a couple of guests - which we have regularly - it works beautifully.” John said building this home was an opportunity to include all the things he considered important for any client, whether or not they chose to take up his suggestions, while Lucy’s

ISO RECIPE

TECH & SCIENCE

Kottu Roti THIS is part of a regular series featuring recipes that have become popular during the COVID-19 lockdown. This is CFA District 23 Stewart Kreltszheim’s favourite recipe for Kottu Roti. Stewart shares this aromatic dish which is from his Sri Lankan heritage, and also urges the community to ensure their smoke alarms are working. THIS is a great smelling dish but when we sleep, so does our sense of smell. This means that if there is a fire you will not wake up to the smell of smoke. Smoke alarms are designed to wake people and provide some time to safely evacuate the house. Kottu Roti Serves 4 Ingredients: Olive oil 1 red onion, sliced 1 thumb ginger, minced 2 cloves garlic, minced 10 fresh curry leaves, plus extra to serve 1 hot green chilli, chopped

1 carrot, julienned 8 cabbage leaves, thinly sliced 1 spring onion, sliced 3 eggs, beaten 4 curried chicken thighs, cut into 2cm chunks (see recipe above) ½ cup curry sauce, plus extra to serve (see recipe above) 4 fried roti, cut into thin strips Lime wedges and coconut sambal, to serve Method: Heat a generous glug of oil in a large saute pan. Add the red onion, ginger, garlic, curry leaves and green chilli and fry for four minutes. Add the carrot, cabbage and spring onion and fry until the vegetables have softened. Add the whisked eggs and, when set, add the chicken and curry sauce and stir until well combined. At the last moment, add the roti strips and toss to combine. Season to taste with salt. Top with extra fried curry leaves and mustard seeds. Serve with lime wedges, coconut sambal and extra curry sauce.

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ MOON-ERALS: NASA’s recent discovery of metal oxides within a crater on the moon has sparked renewed interest from the US Government, as well as private enterprise, into the feasibility of lunar mining.

Hi ho, it’s off to the moon we go THE Moon could hold more metals beneath its surface than had previously been believed, according to new research out of NASA. The new revelations about the Moon’s composition has piqued the interest of aspiring Moon miners. The US Government has recently floated the idea of mining the Moon, but will this lead to a lunar gold rush? The new evidence that the Moon may be rich in metals such as iron and titanium was discovered using NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft. The scientists were actually looking for ice at the bottom of craters around the Moon’s north pole but found evidence of metal oxides in large craters. The hypothesis is that large meteors hitting the Moon have excavated these metal oxides from beneath the Moon’s surface, which in turn suggests concentrations of the metal underground. In April, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to encourage US companies to mine the Moon and other celestial bodies for resources.

The order provided that commercial partners participate in an “innovative and sustainable” US-led program to return humans to the Moon for longterm exploration and utilisation, followed by manned missions to Mars and beyond. Expanding the resource sector deeper into space would, the document said, require commercial entities to recover and use resources in outer space. According to NASA, geological surveys have previously shown that the Moon contains three crucial resources - water, helium-3, and rare earth metals. Water is vital for supporting life and agriculture in space and can be converted into rocket fuel to propel mankind further toward the stars, and helium-3 is a rare helium isotope that could be used for innovations in the energy sector - namely nuclear fusion. Rare earth metals are vital in emerging technologies, as well as the technologies we make use of every day, from smartphones and

au

computers to medical equipment. One reason the US has taken such an interest in mining the Moon is to acquire and control a strong supply of rare earth metals - China currently controls around 95 per cent of the world’s production of rare earths. Escalating tensions between the US and China have seen the former look to alternate sources of the vital resources and has set its sights on the Moon as a means to claw back some control from China. When it comes to the practicality of setting up feasible mining operations on the lunar surface, nobody has figured out an actionable plan. SpaceX is aiming to solve a significant cost barrier by developing reusable rockets, which could allow for cheaper transport of mined materials from the Moon back to Earth. I recently watched the launch and return of one of the SpaceX rockets, a very significant achievement in and of itself, so if anyone is going to solve the economic problems of lunar mining, it’s likely going to be them.
