Mal’s healthy life lessons By ASHLEIGH PILES
THIS Sunday’s Whorouly Village Fair will hold a strong emphasis on “good old fashioned” and for guest star and former marathon runner Mal Wilson, it’ll be about getting back to the basics of fitness. The 68 year old Myrtleford resident is an avid believer in running and dedicates his time to instilling his love for the sport in the next generation. On Sunday, visitors of all ages to the Whorouly Village Fair will be treated to series of workshops with a focus on learning to enjoy running. “There will be three runs - the first will be surging to get an idea of how to run, the second will be single file for a bit of a fun and the last will be a few laps of handicap racing and try and get the little ones to catch the older ones,” Mal said. “I’d just like to give local kids a taste of what it’s like to feel fit and what’s out there waiting for them if they are willing to put the time and effort into it.” Mal was once a self-confessed slob before turning his life around, and that of others in the community he calls home. He was on the brink of death in 1994, aged just 43, when he had coronary artery bypass surgery and was told he had less than five years to live. “My heart issues were directly through being unfit and unhealthy - saturated fat gave it to me and I was lucky I survived,” he said. Mal hopes his workshop at the Whorouly Village Fair is an opportunity for young families to get educated and inspired to live a healthier life.

Heartworm in dogs with Freya Williams from Wangaratta Veterinary Clinic HEARTWORM is a worm that lives in dogs’ hearts. Heartworm larvae are spread by mosquitos. They are then spread to the blood vessels of the heart and lungs where they mature into adults. Heartworm is relatively common in northern and eastern Australia. There have also recently been some positive cases found in North East Victoria. What are the signs of heartworm? Heartworm disease is very serious and can be life threatening. It restricts blood ow which can then eventually lead to heart failure. The ďŹ rst signs of heartworm are usually nonspeciďŹ c signs of coughing, exercise intolerance, lack of energy and weight loss. What is the treatment and prevention? Heartworm is diagnosed with a blood test. It can be treated but usually involves hospitalisation of the patient for a couple of days and requires injection of an insecticide that will kill the adult worms. There are many products available for prevention and are generally very effective. Contact your veterinarian discuss options for protecting your pet against heartworm.

â—† ACACIA pendula, the Weeping Myall
Latin and Greek for gardeners – Part 2 IN my last article I wrote about the binomial naming system for plants (i.e. Genus and Species). This has been the standard way of classifying all living things since the 18th century. These names are generally written in Latin, or Latinised words from other languages, particularly Greek. They have been universally adopted across the world, which avoids the confusion of using common names for plants. Naming plants by their genus and species is a bit like using a surname and then a ďŹ rst name. For example, all our Australian wattles are in the acacia genus. The word acacia comes from the Greek word ‘akakia’ which means ‘thorny tree’. Fortunately not all of them are thorny though. A lovely local species is the Box Leaf Wattle, Acacia buxifolia. One of its cousins from the drier parts of eastern Australia is the Weeping Myall, or Acacia pendula. There are many more cousins, with around 1000 different species of wattle in Australia. Although botanical Latin can seem like a confusing alphabet soup, once you understand what some keywords mean, many plant names are suddenly demystiďŹ ed. In a botanical name there’s always something to learn about the history of the plant, who ďŹ rst described it and what it looks like. In the last article I listed some common Latin words for colour (eg alba for white and rubra for red). Here’s some other useful botanical terms:
English
Latin / Greek
Example
ower
ora
Snow Gum, Eucalyptus pauciora
leaf
folia
Box Leaf Wattle, Acacia buxifolia
stemless
acaulis
Dwarf Date Palm, Phoenix acaulis
slender
gracilis
Slender Lip Fern, Myriopteris gracilis
dwarf/ compact
nana compacta
Dwarf Petunia, Petunia nana compacta
columnar
fastigiata
Cypress Oak, Quercus robur fastigiata
bushy
fruiticosa
Native Rosemary, Westringia fruiticosa
creeping
repens
Kidney Weed, Dichondra repens
weeping
pendulous
Weeping Myall, Acacia pendula
Japanese
japonica
Japanese Camellia, Camellia japonica
false
pseudo
False Acacia, Robina pseudoacacia
Put together, these ancient words are very descriptive. So next time you come across a seemingly weird plant name, don’t worry about how to pronounce it – that really doesn’t matter. Just look for clues that can unlock secrets about its colour, form, leaf pattern or natural habitat. You really can tell a lot about a plant from its name.

YOUR HEALTH Morris of Rutherglen Sparkling Shiraz Durif
WHEN it’s footy finals season, it seems like everything else that might be happening in the world gets put on hold for a few weeks. It was great to see local footy grounds as jam-packed with passionate fans as the big stadiums, and it all just builds the momentum in the weeks leading up to the national games’ grand finals. No matter who you barrack for, every punter had an opinion on who deserved to be there and how it was going to play out, and footy colours adorned towns like Christmas decorations. Then suddenly it’s all over bar the shouting, and if you’re team didn’t win, the sore head on Sunday just feels so much worse. An elegant way to wind down but keep the celebratory feel alive at any time of year is with a bottle of Morris of Rutherglen Sparkling Shiraz Durif. This bottle-fermented bubbly is dark, purple red and pours with exuberant effervescence, creating a purple frothy top. The aroma is reminiscent of

raspberry and there are vibrant, mixed berry-licious flavours to follow, but a dry-ish finish makes it work as an aperitif which won’t interfere with food or drink to follow. And it’s also great with party foods like salumi, game and roast duck. It would make a cracker of a way to celebrate at Christmas which now the footy is well and truly over, I’m sorry to say, will be here before we know it.

This Day in History, 1840 MANY consider this to be the date of the birth of the first white girl in the North East. A daughter was delivered of Mrs A.A. Huon of the Upper Murray district. The first white child is believed to have been born one year earlier, to Mr and Mrs Robert Mason, who had the Beggarie Station near the headwaters of the Murray. The child was named Robert James, but died when only young and was buried on the station. The Masons later sold Beggarie, and eventually moved to the Greta area.

with Naturopaths Belinda McPherson and Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY)
Women staying healthy DURING our recent DIY womens’ health workshop series, we learnt that so many women don’t know what is not quite right in regards to their health. We knew that women put up with annoying symptoms but were surprised by how many were suffering. We identified that today’s pressure of being a “healthy” mum/woman, is much more than what our previous generations experienced and how our body is reacting to this. During this workshop we demonstrated some simple and cost-effective home rituals that can easily be implemented to your daily/weekly routine.

He is a running coach for a few of the Myrtleford Saints footballers, a boxing coach for students at Marian College and has a women’s walking group in the works as well lots of casual bike riding. “There are so many places in the area to train kids for really cheap,” Mal said. “Particularly, ex-professional boxer and local butcher Steve Dale - he trains kids every Monday for a gold coin donation at the showgrounds. “They love it to death and he is teaching them the most invaluable lessons for next to nothing. “Kids just need to learn to love being active so they don’t end up like me.”

Mal’s healthy life lessons
“It starts now - sugar, salt, fat - heart disease starts now,” he said. “I hope the kids leave wanting to start a group up or get their parents out for a run because it really is the best thing you can do for yourself.” He said it is important now more than ever that young people understand it is possible to be healthy without having to spend huge amounts of money. “I want the kids to know they don’t have to belong to a gym or pay lots to be in a sport, you can just go and do this on your own,” Mal said. The running coach said the key to success with teaching anyone to run is letting them see the benefits for themselves. “You’ve got to teach them to relax, how to breathe properly and how to land properly,” he said. Aside from the physical benefits, Mal said running does wonders for a person’s mental wellbeing. “Honestly, I think you benefit the

GONE FISHING

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ SOL: Our solar system began to form approximately 4.6 billion years ago when, it is theorised, a large cloud of gas was disturbed by a nearby supernova.
WANGARATTA ◆ NICE REWARD: Jake Bennett showing us all how it’s done with his magnificent 35cm brown trout caught in a tributary of the Ovens River.
A few trout, yellowbelly being caught THIS week’s fishing report is very similar to last week, with just a slight improvement in the fishing right across the board. The trout fishing remains about the same with some streams fishing well and some struggling. Jake Bennett of Tarrawingee caught a lovely 35cm brown trout in a tributary of the Ovens River last week. Jake is a gun fisherman and I am not at all surprised by his success. At the same time I fished a tributary of the King River and found the fishing very tough, hooking just one small brown trout that got off before I landed it. I have had reports of a few trout being caught in the Mitta Mitta River between Eskdale and Mitta Mitta. I have also had reports of the Mitta Mitta River flowing very high and almost at full capacity making wading extremely difficult in some areas, and impossible in most. And there have been reports
of huge carp being caught in the lower reaches of the Mitta Mitta River. Lake Hume has really started to turn it up over the last week with more consistent reports of yellowbelly being caught, as well as some very large trout. Once again, local Lake Hume regular Cliff Karnatz has hit the jackpot with a 63cm brown trout caught on a trolled McGrath wide body lure. Tony Bennett of Mulwala has reported that a few yellowbelly are just starting to show up in Lake Mulwala. Tony has reported very slow fishing recently but over the last week or two a few yellowbelly reports have started to trickle in. Remember that it is still the closed Murray cod season, however Lake Eildon remains open to Murray cod fishing all year round and over the last week I have seen a few photos of some decent cod being caught there including one monster at 113cm long.
The formation of the solar system TO know exactly what is meant by the term “solar system” it is important to break it down into the two words that comprise the expression. Firstly, the term “solar” is simply a word that means “of the Sun.” Secondly, a system is just a collection of objects that interact to form a whole. The solar system is a group of objects that interact with one another, the fundamental interaction for each object being the one it has with the Sun. There are many different types of objects found in the solar system: a star, planets, moons, dwarf planets, comets, asteroids, gas, and dust. All objects in the Solar System orbit the Sun; that is, they move around the Sun in elliptical paths. Moreover, the orbits of these objects lie roughly in the same plane, called the ecliptic plane. The mechanism that causes the orbit of objects in the Solar System is one of the fundamental forces in nature: gravity. While the natural tendency for objects in the Solar System is to continue in a straight line of motion, the Sun exerts a force (gravity) on each object and therefore “bends” the straight path into a curved one. Additionally, other objects in the Solar System are massive enough to exert gravitational forces significant enough to alter the orbit of smaller objects. For example, the Earth’s gravity is strong enough to keep the Moon in orbit around the Earth. Though it is common for most people to believe that the edge of the Solar System is that of Pluto’s orbit, this is far from the truth. Over the course of the 20th century scientists not only hypothesized the size of the Solar System extends to almost two light years – that’s 125,000 times the distance from the Sun to the Earth – but also that there are many objects beyond Pluto. Scientist now believe that there are two major regions beyond Pluto. The first is the Kuiper Belt, a region of asteroids similar to the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, and the Oort Cloud, a spherical region that contains numerous comets.
It is estimated that approximately 4.6 billion years ago a large cloud of gas and dust was disturbed by some force - scientists have theorised that this force was a nearby supernova. As a result of this disturbance and the energy introduced to the cloud, the cloud began to move. Once the movement began, the cloud started to collapse in on itself due to its own gravity. During the process of collapsing, the cloud began to rotate and heat up. As the cloud continued to collapse, the cloud’s temperature continued to rise and its rotation became faster and faster. As a result, the cloud eventually began to flatten out into a disk shape with most of the mass located at its center. At some point the pressure and temperature became so great at the cloud’s center that nuclear fusion began to take place. It was then that the Sun was born. After the Sun was born, the gases and dust further out from the disk’s center began to cool and condense into tiny particles that gradually formed into larger rocks. Boulder-sized particles began to impact and join together. These larger bodies are known as planetisimals. Eventually, enough planetisimals joined together to form planetary embryos. However, unlike the small particles, boulders, and planetisimals, planetary embryos were massive enough to exert significant gravitational force on surrounding objects. Hence, instead of random collisions between objects, planetary embryos pulled objects in the surrounding area to itself. Once all of the material in the area of each planetary embryo was pulled in, the planets were born. All other significant material in the solar system that did not join to form the Sun or the planets condensed to form the moons, asteroids, or comets. Over time, the orbits of the planets and other bodies stabilized into the solar system that we know today.
