By KYLIE WILSON FROM the south of France to the Alpine Shire, Jean-Pierre Ronco has packed a lot into his life. Today, he is an active member of the Porepunkah community, and a key organiser of the Wandiligong Nut Festival and Flea Market. Moving to Australia in 2006, he spent several years studying photography in Melbourne before moving to the North East with his wife in 2014, inspired by previous holidays he had taken to the area. “In 2015 I started to be involved with the Wandiligong Nut Festival as a stall holder,” Jean-Pierre said. “I immediately loved this event, as it reminds me of the same kind of festivals in France where I grow up. “Over there, there is a three week festival to celebrate chestnut harvesting. “I think that since then, I love chestnuts and everything around them.” Jean-Pierre said that he loved the family friendly ambience of the Wandiligong Nut Festival and has made many friends through the event. His involvement with the festival grew, culminating in him volunteering last year to organise the festival in 2018. A professional photographer who runs his own business, Image Writer, Jean-Pierre has been part of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography since 2011, and is passionate about his craft.

FEATURE STORY

Helping dogs with thunderstorm phobia WE have had our fair share of thunderstorms over the summer and early autumn this year. Unfortunately many dogs do not like the sounds and experiences of thunder and lightning. Their reaction can vary from agitation or fear through to a full blown phobia where they can become a danger to themselves because of their actions. If your dog is afraid or severely afraid in thunderstorms it is best to provide them shelter and comfort during these events as a lack of supervision often leads to injuries in the backyard as they try to get away from the noise and lightning. There are also commercially available “thundershirts” which anxious dogs can wear during thunderstorms and other anxiety triggering events. These shirts provide some compression that helps calm them. If your dog is having a lot of difficulty with thunderstorm phobia then medications can

with Tim Craig BVSc VETERINARIAN be used to help reduce their anxiety. It is important to note that the past use of the tranquiliser acepromazine (small yellow tablets) is no longer recommended as although dogs look sedate and calm they are still quite aware and afraid in their minds. There are some newer anti-anxiety medications that can be quite useful with this phobia. These medicines are prescription medications and as a result can only be prescribed after a consultation to examine your pet and discuss their behaviour. Medications are best used when a storm is approaching before too much anxiety has developed. Therefore being prepared prior to thunderstorms is

He and his wife love living in the area, particularly their home in Porepunkah. “We really love this little township, very close to the busy Bright and very relaxing,” he said. “Everything is very close, such as great coffee, great pub, great winery, great spaces. “Living here is really a paradise for landscape photographers, watching the seasons roll over at the bottom of one of the best National Parks - Mt Buf-

“The festival brings together local crowds as well as international visitors from all over the world.” The Wandiligong Nut Festival takes place on Saturday, April 27 from 9am4pm at Alpine Park in Wandiligong, and is part of the large array of events that take place during the Bright Autumn Festival (April 26-May 5). More information on everything involved with the Bright Autumn Festival can be found at www.brightautumnfestival.org.au. Jean-Pierre conducts photography workshops every Wednesday (from beginners to advanced photographers) in the Alpine Shire. During Easter and the Bright Autumn Festival, he will hold extra workshops in Bright on April 23, 25, and 30 and on May 2; and in Harrietville on April 24 and May 1. falo,” he said, adding that he found the region’s history fascinating. He encouraged the public to attend this year’s Wandiligong Nut Festival. “Bright and Wandiligong are just the prefect destination for autumn,” he said. “All the local foliage changes their amazing colours. “The days become shorter and the mornings are cooler, so it is also a great time to start some bonfires and roast chestnuts. “Visitor could also enjoy the best new product from the harvest: all nuts such as walnuts and chestnuts, new fresh apples, new wines. “The Wandiligong Nut Festival is very important for people living in Wandiligong. “It is the major event in this little charming town. “It is also the perfect time for people to come together and share the product of their long work in farms. “The atmosphere of the festival is very friendly and last year we saw a record crowd of over 3000 people.

bers stayed at Ski-land on Lake Mulwala last week and they reported consistent fishing throughout the week. No red hot bites, but a consistent flow of fish. They also witnessed a group of men catching a Murray cod well over 100cm

long off the bank at the resort using cheese for bait - the cod was quickly released. I have had reports of carp being caught from a few places including the Ovens River, Lake Moodemere, Lake Hume and private

property at Glenrowan. Call them what you like: carp, sewer bass, mud marlin, golden garbage it really doesn’t matter. They are a hard fighting freshwater fish species that provide a lot of angling enjoyment.

LAST WEEK’S SOLUTION

MIXED fishing reports are the order of the day across the North East ahead of the Easter break. I have had quite a few reports of fishless trips from around the region, particularly with Murray cod fishing, while at the same time there have been a number of quite large cod caught around the region as well. I think anglers getting the best results are quite skilled and experienced fishermen, while the common angler is struggling a bit. From my personal experience, in two trips fishing close to Wangaratta over the last week, I have had Murray cod strike and follow my lures, but none of them have hooked up - it is as though they are wanting to strike the lure but are not fully committed. Fishermen using cheese and worms for bait have been getting better results in the Ovens River with quite a number of Murray cod caught. So in a nutshell, the cod fishing is slowing down, with some experienced anglers still doing well, as are bait fishermen. Once again Lake Mulwala has been the most consistent fishery over the last week with quite a few cod being caught down there, including some monsters. Some of my family mem-

Addressing autoimmune disease HAVE you been diagnosed with Hashimoto Disease (auto immune thyroid disease)? Are you medicated? Your pathology says all is well - but you still feel tired, experience sleep difficulties, body aches, dry mouth/eyes or any other symptom associated with your disease. diet and lifestyle techniques that can assist with this exact thing - an immune system that is out of control, dysfunctional and inflamed. First we need to identify (if we can) if the disease has started due to a past infection, hormonal shift (post-partum is a common time), chronic stress or is a part of another endocrine disease. Naturopaths have the time and knowledge to go through this with you in depth and in conjunction with your GP or endocrinologist. This is the part of our job we love - working collaboratively with other practitioners. Then we need to assess: are there

any underlying nutritional deficiencies? Iodine, Vitamin D, iron, zinc/copper ratio, magnesium and Vitamin B’s and selenium are the main ones to asses both in pathology and in body signs. The thyroid gland is a hungry unit, and needs optimal (not just in range) ranges to function at its best. Half of Aussie workers say automation has impacted their job responsibilities HALF of Australian workers have already seen their job responsibilities change as a result of automation, according to recruiting experts Hays. In an online poll of almost 2000 (1987) people in Australia conducted by the recruiter, 18 per cent said automation has already impacted their job ‘signiďŹ cantly’, with their duties changing or their role becoming redundant. Another 32 per cent said their job has been impacted ‘partially’, with some tasks automated and non-routine duties increasing. skilled professionals whose job has not yet been impacted by automation, it’s essential you don’t rest on your laurels. “The automation of routine and repetitive job tasks is inevitable. “To prepare, consider what your job would look like if all the routine and repetitive duties you perform were automated. “Then determine how you could ďŹ ll the time freed up by the automation of these tasks in a way that adds greater strategic value to your employer. “Next, start to upskill in the higher-value areas you’ve identiďŹ ed so that you’ll be ready for the automation of your lower-value, repetitive tasks. “But don’t just sit back and wait for automation to knock on your door. “Be proactive and embrace change by exploring relevant automation tools and their practical application for your role. “Set up a meeting with your boss to discuss these new tools and how they could be of use in your role. “Then present your plan for how you can focus your time on higher-value tasks if your routine and repetitive job responsibilities were automated. “Remember, constant upskilling is the key to remaining relevant and employable when lowervalue tasks are automated.â€?

TECH & SCIENCE

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ GERMS: Prior to French microbiologist Louis Pasteur’s simple demonstration of germ theory in 1861, physicians believed that disease spontaenuosly appeared out of thin air.

Great medical advances throughout history Sumerians experimented with the opium poppy as an anaesthetic) - William T. G. Morton made history in 1846 when he successfully used ether as an anaesthetic during surgery. Soon after, a faster-acting substance called chloroform became widely used, but was considered high-risk after several fatalities were reported. Over the 150 years since, safer anaesthetics have been developed, allowing millions of life-saving, painless operations to take place. Germ theory (1861) Before the ‘germ’ theory came about, the widely believed theory was that disease was caused by ‘spontaneous generation’. In other words, physicians of the time thought that disease could appear out of thin air, rather than being airborne or transferred via skinto-skin contact. In 1861, French microbiologist Louis Pasteur proved through a simple experiment that infectious disease was a result of an invasion of spe-

cific microscopic organisms - also known as pathogens into living hosts. This new understanding marked a significant turning point in how diseases were treated, controlled and prevented, helping to prevent devastating epidemics that were responsible for thousands of deaths every year, such as the plague, dysentery and typhoid fever. Penicillin (1928) Alexander Fleming’s penicillin, the world’s first antibiotic, completely revolutionised the war against deadly bacteria. Famously, the Scottish biologist accidentally discovered the anti-bacterial ‘mould’ in a petri dish in 1928. However, Fleming’s incredible findings were not properly recognised until the 1940s, when they began being massproduced by American drug companies for use in World War II. Two other scientists were responsible for the mass distribution of penicillin, Australian Howard Florey and NaziGermany refugee Ernst Chain,

and their development of the substance ended up saving millions of future lives. Organ transplants (1954) In December 1954, the first successful kidney transplant was carried out by Dr Joseph Murray and Dr David Hume in Boston, USA. Despite many previous attempts in history, this was the first instance where the recipient of an organ transplant survived the operation. The turning point came when various technical issues were overcome, such as vascular anastomosis (the connection between two blood vessels), placement of the kidney and immune response. In 1963, the first lung transplant was carried out, followed by a pancreas/kidney in 1966, and liver and heart in 1967. Aside from saving thousands of lives in the years following, transplant procedures have also become increasingly innovative and complex, with doctors successfully completing the first hand transplant in 1998 and

full-face transplant in 2010. Antiviral drugs (1960s) Terrible viruses such as small-pox, influenza and hepatitis have ravaged many human populations throughout history. Unlike the sweeping success of antibiotics in the late 1930s and 1940s, the development of antivirals did not really take off until the 1960s. This was mostly due to the structure of a virus, which was a core of genetic material surrounded by a protective protein coat that hides and reproduces inside a person’s cells. As the virus information is so protected, it was difficult to treat them without damaging the host cell. Over the years antivirals have improved significantly, and work by blocking the rapid reproduction of viral infections, and some can even stimulate the immune system to attack the virus. The development of effective antivirals has been significant in treating and controlling the spread of deadly virus outbreaks such as HIV/AIDS, Ebola and rabies.

entist Edward Jenner in 1796 to use inoculations to control the infamous smallpox virus, the usefulness and popularity of vaccines grew very quickly. Throughout the 1800s and early 1900s, various vaccinations were created to combat some of the world’s deadliest diseases, including smallpox, rabies, tuberculosis, and cholera. Over the course of 200 years, one of the deadliest diseases known to man – the small pox (Variola) – was entirely wiped out. Today, vaccines continue to save millions of lives each year - including jabs that protect against deadly flu strains and can help prevent some cancers. Anaesthesia (1846) Before the first use of a general anaesthetic in the mid19th century, surgery was undertaken only as a last resort, with several patients opting for death rather than going under the knife. Although there were countless earlier experiments with anaesthesia dating as far back as 4000 BC ( the ancient

CRAFTED

WE’VE come a long way since the days of early medicine. If you were unfortunate enough to fall ill or sustain serious injury a couple of centuries ago, you might have been forced to undergo surgery without anaesthetic. Possibly, you may have undergone a course of faecal smearing to treat your plague lesions. To cure a headache, your physician may have recommended some cure-all bloodletting. Or maybe some quack would have taken a drill to your cranium to cure whatever ‘mental disorder’ may - or may not - have been ailing you in a process called trepanning. To celebrate the fact that we no longer need to suffer such ‘cures’, this week I thought we’d honour the marvellous efforts of some of the doctors, scientists and researchers who brought us into the modern age of medicine by taking a look at some historic breakthroughs. Vaccines (1796) Beginning with an attempt by English physician and sci-

Gordon, Gino and Fred, not on your life CHANNEL CHAT

THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS:

SHOW: SS-GB CHANNEL: ABC Comedy TIME: Monday, 9.17pm

Versailles (SBS, Wednesday, 11pm) Third and final season of this lavish, historical drama in the home of the French Sun King with more twists than a 60s’ dance competition. Masterrmind (SBS, 6pm) A true quiz show where the host, Jennifer Byrne, isn’t the centre of attention and questions aren’t on who won the latest series of any of the acronyms above.

with SHANE DOUTHIE ORIGINALLY my review this week was on the latest celebrity cooking show creatively titled Gordon, Gino and Fred: Road Trip. It’s about three ‘celebrities’ Gordon (Ramsay), Fred and Gino (the last two I’ve never heard of) and their ‘hilarious adventures’ travelling to exotic locations and behaving like a bunch of Aussie 20 somethings in Bali.

I actually watched it and sadly the boorish moments far outweighed the bright spots but even then I was determined to do the story. Then a sports journalist (oxymoron?) asked if I was reviewing a show on “real” television. I thought he meant free to air but no, he actually meant anything but shows on SBS or ABC.

Upstart Crow (ABC Comedy, Friday, 9.50pm) Hilarious comedy set in Elizabethan England about the misadventures of The Bard. If I have to explain any further you won’t get the jokes. Sorry Jez.

◆ WHODUNNIT AND WHO’D BELIEVE IT: Detective drama set in Britain after WWII – but the Germans won.

So - to the stale old piece of cheese in the newsroom – this week’s for you. Tomorrow night SBS premieres a new television series, SS-GB, a word even a sports writer can spell, based on the Len Deighton novel

about a British homicide detective who investigates a murder in German-occupied England in a parallel universe where the Nazis won World War II. Not your normal crime drama hey.

It has a fine cast featuring Sam Riley as Detective Douglas Archer, “caught between his brutal new SS bosses and a ruthless British resistance movement”, and Kate Bosworth as American journalist Barbara Barga who gets

swept up in the case. The first episode sets the scene so I encourage others ready for more challenging television than MKR, MAFS, IACGMOOH, TAR, ANTM, DWTS, TUWTK or BIP to tune in.
