The chicken whisperer By BELINDA HARRISON

LAKENVELDER, Vorwerk, Australorp and Leghorn aren’t normally in a 12 year-old’s vocabulary, unless you’re Ellie Samson of Wangaratta. Ellie - AKA ‘mad chook woman junior’ - has chook blood in her veins - well not literal chook blood, but figuratively speaking! Her-great grandfather on her mum’s side was a poultry farmer and her Grannie is a mad chook woman - hence where her junior moniker comes from - and she’s grown up with chickens. Making their home in an impressive coop in the family’s backyard,

Ellie has two Lakenvelders named Sugar and Maisie, two Vorwerks called Cinnimon and Rosie, two Australorps called Lavender and Sage , as well as Mary, who is a leghorn cross. As Ellie explains, they each have their own unique personality - Maisie in particular happens to enjoy going to sleep on the backyard swing set. “The Australorps are really good at cleaning out the cockie’s cage, which was supposed to be a punishment for being broody, but they loved it,” Ellie said.

Microbats now in hibernation mode MICROBATS are mammals - the only mammals capable of flying a sustained distance. They see with their ears rather than their eyes and produce a sound, ‘listening’ for it as it bounces back from surrounding objects. The time the sound takes to travel back to them tells the bat how close the object is. As the sound bounces off the ground, trees, rocks and houses, the bat ‘sees’ a three dimensional image of its surroundings. During summer and autumn, microbats go into a feeding frenzy as they fatten up on insects to help them survive the winter. Once the nights become cooler and the insects disappear, microbats lower their body temperature and go into a state of mini hibernation until their food returns in spring. Microbats can eat as much as 40 per cent of their own body weight in a single night. Many of our microbat species are hollow-dependent which means they live during the daylight hours inside the hollows of trees or branches. Competition from birds, possums and gliders along with the clearing of many old trees means that microbats may find the roof or walls of your

with Vincent Ventura, Veterinarian home the perfect roosting place. In Australia, microbat babies are born in late spring and remain with their mothers until the end of January. The mother produces milk to feed her babies. Adult microbats feed on lawn grub moths, weevils, beetles, midges, flying termites, mosquitoes and other insects. Microbats like insects to give them enough food to last the winter months and safe places to live some choose caves, mine shafts or storm water pipes while others use tree hollows, under bark, cracks in posts, dried palms leaves or junction boxes. They are fussy about conditions and will use a particular site at different times of the year. They don’t like being disturbed, especially when roosting in winter. They are very slow to “wake up” and easy prey for cats if the roost is disturbed. - Sourced from the Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife

PESTS, diseases and weeds are a constant risk for primary producers, as they can have a serious impact on agricultural production and market access. WINE TALK

YOUR HEALTH Delatite Wines

2018 High Ground Pinot Grigio AS restrictions ease and cafes and restaurants get the all clear to open, many owners and managers are coming to terms with operating on a much smaller scale. With limits on numbers and adherence to social distancing rules required, those with larger spaces are putting mileage on their fitness trackers, while those with small venues have to weigh up whether it’s worth being open at all. I hope customers are recognising it’s not cool to nurse a cuppa for ages while others wanting to order food are waiting for a table, and I hope they’re booking, arriving on time and leaving when they said they would. Having experienced being seated at tables where you can touch elbows with the diners on either side, I won’t complain if a bit of extra distancing becomes the new normal. I’m ordering wine by the glass with lunch, then coming home to enjoy a bottle of Delatite High Ground Pinot Grigio with dinner later on. This lightly straw-coloured wine has the fruity aroma of a ripe Williams pear. It’s pure and fresh; fulsome with pear and apple and yet balanced with zesty acidity.

with Anita McPherson

The wine is made at Delatite in Mansfield where sustainable viticultural techniques are practiced. It’s particularly good with lighter foods like grilled fish or seafood and perfect with a postlunch supper of fresh oysters. It was a big lunch - and snacks don’t have to be bad for you. Available from local stockists or visit www.delatitewinery.com.au. PRICE: Around $23 a bottle.

This Day in History, 1901 A STRANGE cargo arrived in Wangaratta on this day in 1901: a pair of cannons for the Borough Council. The 32 pounders, relics of one of England’s largest battleships, the ‘Nelson’, were later used as commemorative display pieces near the Boer War monument opposite the town hall. When the Monument Gardens were created in the early 1920s to accommodate an additional monument, the cannons were incorporated into the design, but when the King George Gardens were created following the removal of the market yards, the old relics were taken down to the new park, and have been on guard there ever since.

with Naturopaths Belinda McPherson and Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) ◆ SUPER: Needed for more than 300 biochemical reactions in our bodies, magnesium can be used for many ailments.

Magnesium has many uses

MAGNESIUM is needed for more than 300 biochemical reactions in our body. It is water soluble and excreted via the urine with increased excretion occurring when you are stressed or cortisol is activated in your body. Magnesium is responsible for calming our nervous system, relaxing our muscles, aiding in blood sugar regulation, sleep cycles and moods just to name a few. We find regularly that our clients show magnesium deficiency signs, facial tics, cramps, dehydration, insomnia, anxiety, fatigue, food

cravings and high blood pressure. Magnesium can be found in many food sources but our food is lacking from poor farming practices. Consuming magnesium foods with phytates that reduce absorption, medications such as antacids (Losec, Nexium etc) reduce absorbability and heart medications increase excretion of the very nutrient that is important for heart rhythm and pressure. When we talk about using a magnesium supplement people will say that ‘magnesium doesn’t work for me’ and when we look into what they have been taking, what form and dose, we

find that the over the counter products they have been consuming are low dose, poorly absorbable and quality and can even cause side effects like GIT disturbances and diarrhea. Prescription magnesium from your naturopath is a therapeutic dose, is in a form that is easily absorbable and with co-factors to increase its utilisation in your body. You may be able to find a cheaper version over the counter but if it is poorly absorbed, causes side effects and is low dose, is it really cheaper? Let us help you find the right magnesium for you.

The chicken whisperer

Ĺś

From page 1

A habit Ellie is not so fond of is when they stand on her feet when she’s trying to walk - the Australorps especially are quite heavy. Ellie’s chickens aren’t just pets to play with in the backyard like other kids would play with their cats and dogs. Rather, they are highly trainable and she showed her blue silkie, Astrid (sadly now in chicken heaven), at the Wangaratta Show in 2019 and she aims to show Sage, Rosie and the Lakenvelders at the Wangaratta Poultry Show in May 2021. “Astrid and I won Junior Reserve Champion, First Prize Junior Female and Best Exhibit Junior Female and I learnt a lot that day from the judge and the other chicken fanciers who were very kind and helpful, she said. So just what goes into preparing a chicken for showing at a poultry show? “Chickens love a bath before a show to clean their feathers, Ellie said.

“Then they need to be blow dried (a routine also highly enjoyed). “You can then use a silk scarf or handkerchief to shine their feathers, although that doesn’t work for silkie chickens. “Applying Vaseline or coconut oil to their combs, waddles and legs makes them soft and shiny. The preparation begins the night before the show with the chicken’s bath and they’re then kept in a box overnight so they don’t get dirty again. “On the day of the show, you get up early to arrive before judging and you don’t want to be running late because often you need to calm your chicken so they can perform at their best, said Ellie. “Each chicken is allocated a cage and you wait for the judge. “I followed the judge around last year so I could learn what he looks for in a prize-winning chicken. “Chickens who win Best Bird in Show and other large prizes get moved to special cages so they’re

better displayed, and they have a card on their cage to show everyone that they got a prize. Those elite prize-winning chickens (and their owners) have to wait until the end of the day to receive their prizes at a special ceremony, then they’re allowed to go home and celebrate in style. I can only imagine what a chicken celebration might look like - maybe they rush about the yard or cage getting dirty and mucking up their fancy ‘comb-do’ ... or maybe they strut around in front of their coop-mates telling them all about it. Or perhaps their owner simply showers them with praise and a few special chicken treats? They do love eating all your food scraps so maybe that’s their treat - a few extra scraps. According to Jackie French’s ‘Chook Book’, 15 per cent of Britain’s greenhouse gases are caused by compost, so chickens can help keep those emissions low at your house. They can of course also provide you with eggs for your breakfast. “I have three interesting facts about chickens too, Ellie said.

BOLD

PEACH

FEATURE STORY “They can see in ultraviolet light; their eyesight is four times better than humans. “Chickens use physics to predict where insects will land instead of just catching them mid air - and they’re usually spot-on. “The green Junglefowl of Sumatra live exclusively on a diet of seafood and because of this, no one has even been able to domesticate them.â€? For those who’d like to keep chickens of their own, Ellie has some tips: “You need a fox-proof run and a waterproof house with roosts of varying heights,â€? she said. “Food and fresh water is essential. “Hanging feeders are best so rats and mice can’t get into the food and they stop the chickens kicking dirt into their water. “Nesting boxes lined with straw or shredded paper provide somewhere warm and cosy to sleep. “But most important of all: you have to love your chickens.â€? Just a note if you do ďŹ nd yourself going ‘chicken shopping’: if you live in town, you can’t keep roosters, only chickens.

Be prepared to get that job

THERE are many resources out there to help you ďŹ nd work and manage your working life. J obs Victoria has put together some of these resources for you here. Get ready Understand the local market. Every region has a different economic structure and therefore different employment opportunities. Understanding the local market will help you to identify the most suitable options for you. What are the main vacancies in your local region? What type of skills are local employers looking for? What is the best way to look for a job in your region? Networking, job ads in newspapers, online job sites, recruitment agencies, etc. Understand your skills Before you try to convince an employer that you are the right person for the job, take time to identify the skills you have to offer. The skills you’ve gained from your previous job or training experience will be valuable for your next move. In addition, if you are do any voluntary work or are involved in any community organisations, think about additional skills you can include in your CV. The skills you have acquired will help you even if you want to start working in a different industry. For example, if you worked in the retail industry you will no doubt have good communication, customer service and teamworking skills. These skills are required in other industries such as food services, support services and or recreation services, among others. Discuss your strengths, interests and job opportunities with your advisor according to your proďŹ le. Prepare your resume A resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV) provides an employer with a summary of your skills and experience. When you are writing or updating your resume make sure you cover the key elements: Name and contact details (phone number, email address) Relevant qualiďŹ cations or training. Work experience/employment history Community involvement/volunteering

Referees: Think of three or four people you could ask to be a referee. Make contact with them prior to providing their details to make sure they are happy to outline your skills and abilities to potential employers. An outline of your skills tailored to the employer’s needs Any further information that will help to market you such as extracurricular activities, professional memberships, languages, etc. Get the word out Let your relatives, friends, colleagues, customers, retailers etc., know that you’re looking for work. Ask them if they know of any work opportunities with their employer/s or with employers of their family and friends. The more people who know you’re looking for work, the more chances you have of ďŹ nding it. Get prepared for interviews For a successful interview, you need to know yourself, your skills and abilities, and be able to select the most valid skills that will meet the needs of an individual employer. How to prepare for an interview: Research the company you are applying to. Look at its website or call and ask if they have information available. If you know someone who works there, talk to them about the organisation. Research the job. If the job advertisement lists a contact person, call and discuss the role and duties. Prepare answers for the most common questions asked by employers. Avoid yes or no answers to a question. Interviewers will often ask you behavioural questions. They will describe you a scenario and ask you how you would respond. Practise for the interview with a family member or a friend, until you are comfortable responding to the possible questions. Make sure you know where the interview is to be held and that you know how you are going to get there with plenty of time. If you are travelling by car, make sure that you can park nearby and that you have coins for metre parking, if free parking is not available. Do not be late to an interview as ďŹ rst impressions count. For more information visit jobs.vic.gov.au.

SNOW REPORT

ISO RECIPES

◆ FUN: Scarlett Gavin, seven, Camilla Perry, four and Leo Gavin, three, enjoy a day in the snow at Falls Creek. PHOTO: Chris Hocking

Ski resorts for 2020 FOLLOWING the Victorian Premier’s announcement in May that all Victorian ski resorts can commence their ski season for 2020 on June 22, our local resorts have been making preparations to welcome visitors to their mountains and ensuring their businesses are COVID safe. Initiatives being implemented include capacity management, traceability, cleaning and hygiene, accommodation, food and beverage and transportation. Dinner Plain: Dinner Plain is an permanent township and operates differently to the Alpine Resorts. Like other towns, there are no overall capacity limits in place to visit or stay. Individual public spaces, buildings or amenities are subject to capacity limits and visitors will be advised of these via localised signage. There is currently inadequate snow at Dinner Plain for snow recreation activities but tobogganing and snowplay are expected from June 22 if snow conditions allow. Cross Country Ski Trail grooming will commence once snow conditions allow. Food and beverage outlets are open but best to contact them directly to confirm what services they offer and times they’re open.

The Dinner Plain to Hotham Bus Service is expected to commence on June 24. Events will not be going ahead until further notice. Falls Creek and Mount Hotham: Until June 22, 250 day entry passes, per day, will be released for vehicles to enter the resort. There will be limited food and beverage venues open until June 22. Visit the ‘What’s On’ section of the Falls Creek Resort website to see which venues will be open and their operating hours. Lessons, cross country skiing, snow play, tobogganing and grooming of XC trails will begin from June 22 providing there is sufficient snow coverage. Ski lift operations will begin from June 24. Mt Buller: Most food and beverage outlets will reopen June 22 subject to official government advice and physical distancing limits will apply - contact restaurants directly to make a reservation. Ski lifts, skiing and snowboarding to open from June 22. Tobogganing will be available once the snow play parks are open.

THIS is the second in a regular series featuring recipes that have become popular during the COVID-19 lockdown. This recipe comes from Rural City of Wangaratta mayor Dean Rees. Dean shares his recipe for apple crumble. Perfect for cold wintery nights, this easy recipe can be made for all occasions.

This is my daughter’s favourite recipe, hence the name Lexi’s apple crumble. We all enjoy it as it has healthy apples for the main ingredient. You can serve it hot or cold and enjoy it with ice cream or cream.

Lexi’s apple crumble Serves 4 Poached applesOne dozen green apples, peeled 2 cinnamon quills 1 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup water Crumble topping1 cup rolled oats 1 cup shredded coconut 1 cup plain flour 1 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup butter Serve with ice cream or cream
