By ASHLEIGH PILES BARRY Jones celebrated his 40th season at Falls Creek by pouring a beer behind the bar at the Cock n Bull and he wouldn’t have it any other way. Mr Jones, originally from Sydney, moved to Falls Creek in 1978 for what was supposed to be a three-year stint but instantly fell in love with mountain gazing. “I was after a new challenge actually and I was working for myself and going pretty well financially but I wanted to move out to the country and enjoy country living,” he said. “I initially came for three years but I guess my mathematics isn’t too good, I’m still here. “I’d like to think I’m enjoying it as much as I did when I first came here, the body is getting old but the enthusiasm is still there.” Mr Jones bought the Pretty Valley Alpine Lodge in late 1979 and later started iconic English pub, the Cock n Bull, which is celebrating 24 years this season. “One of my interests is rock and roll music so we first set it up as a rock and roll cocktail bar called Christie’s and we had an old jukebox,” he said.

◆ Grevillea lanigera (Woolly Grevillea) is a hardy local groundcover.
Prevention the best course for grass tetany GRASS tetany, also known as lactation tetany and grass staggers, is a highly fatal disease of all ruminants but most commonly in lactating cows. It is characterised by low blood magnesium levels and often concurrent low blood calcium levels. Clinically this manifests with severe neurological symptoms including: ataxia, bellowing, mania, tonic-clonic uncontrolled muscular spasms, convulsions and ultimately death due to respiratory failure, hyperthermia and exhaustion. Unlike other homeostatic mechanisms responsible for regulating electrolyte levels, it appears ruminants do not have an effective mechanism to control magnesium, and are especially vulnerable because there is no readily available store of magnesium in their bodies and magnesium levels depend almost entirely on their diet. Locally, grass tetany is typically seen in mature, heavily lactating beef and dairy cows during winter and spring. The disease is frequently precipitated by sudden cold, wet and windy snaps where the cattle stand in a group with their rear ends facing the weather and do not graze. Lactation increases daily demand for magnesium and a lack of grazing causes a dramatic plunge in blood magnesium levels, while stresses such as yarding and trucking may cause more animals to display overt

clinical signs of grass tetany. Other factors can lead to decreased blood magnesium levels. Lush, grass dominant pasture (as distinct from clover dominant pasture) has low magnesium levels as does improved pasture fertilised by potash and ammonium. Treatment of clinical grass tetany cases carries a high mortality rate. The aim is to administer magnesium and calcium salts (usually intravenously) to return the blood levels to normal as quickly as possible without causing cardiac embarrassment or brain medullary depression. In severely convulsing cases muscular relaxants and anticonvulsants may also be required. Prevention is infinitely better than treatment, and adding magnesium salts to the diet during the danger period is the most effective method. Other ways to add magnesium to the diet include: spraying magnesium salts onto hay or pasture, inclusion in commercial pellets, magnesium lick blocks, magnesium/molasses mixtures in ball feeders and the insertion of metallic magnesium bullets into the ruminant’s reticulum (1st stomach) to be dissolved slowly.

Gorgeous Grevilleas – winter colour THE striking and colourful flowers of Grevilleas make them one of my favourite Australian plants. Being from the Proteaceae family, their flower heads are made up of a number of small flowers. Each individual flower has four stamens (male parts) and a long, protruding carpel (female part) ending in a stigma. The flowers open in succession, giving a long-lasting display. As well as the showy winter colour, Grevillea flowers are rich in nectar. They attract, and are pollinated by, honeyeater birds. When birds visit to sip nectar, they collect pollen on their heads. This pollen is then transferred to another flower with a receptive stigma. Grevillea plants also provide valuable cover and foraging opportunities
for small insect-eating birds. If you take a look at any dense Grevillea shrub you are bound to see small native birds flitting about. Grevilleas come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, so there is one to suit nearly every garden. The largest is Grevillea robusta (Silky Oak), a tree growing up to 40m. The Silky Oak is native to northern NSW and Queensland but grows quite happily here in the North East. The small to medium shrubs and groundcovers are more suitable for most gardens. Typically, Grevilleas like a sunny position, slightly acidic soils and good drainage. As a bonus, they are hardy once established. Most hardy of all are our local native species. These include Grevillea rosmarinifolia
(Rosemary Grevillea), Grevillea alpina (Cat’s Claw Grevillea) and Grevillea lanigera (Woolly Grevillea). Despite its name, Grevillea alpina is rarely found in alpine areas, preferring instead the dry forests and woodlands at lower elevations. Grevilleas should be lightly pruned after flowering, and regularly tip-pruned to keep them compact and promote more flowering. Old plants can be renovated by a hard prune, and this is best done in spring. Grevilleas will also benefit from a low phosphorus native plant fertiliser applied once or twice a year. So next time you’re out and about, take note of the gorgeous Grevilleas which thrive in our area.

Rutherglen Estates 2018 Pinot Grigio AFTER a few days in a row of cold and miserable weather, there was no choice but to postpone outdoor activities and explore indoor forms of recreation. It’s no wonder people can become transfixed by screens with easy access to every major sporting event, movie and popular series, on demand at just the click of a button. Those who prefer a little culture with their art, and a glass of wine to boot, might like to head to Rutherglen Estates and the Aboriginal Exhibitions Gallery adjacent to its tasting room. The latest exhibition “Northern Exposure – Stories from Lockhart River and Fitzroy Crossing” features the captivating modernist work of celebrated artists Jack Macale Loodgengardinge, Patrick Butcher and the late Adrian King. At the same time try their

of wines, including the 2018 Pinot Grigio. The white wine variety of the moment, which has its origins in Italy’s Veneto region, this Pinot Grigio has a pale straw colour and a pear cake aroma with hints of honey nougat. The flavour has more pear and the zing of citrus, but then it’s also quite silky in the mouth, which makes it not only feel enjoyable but seems to make those flavours resonate longer. No wonder it’s appealing, also being food friendly and especially good with seafood and all kinds of pasta dishes. Call it a modernist, and thoroughly Australian take, on an Italian classic.

This Day in History, 1901 BOER WAR WELCOME HOME LANCE Corporal Duncan of Killawarra and Trooper Wallace of Wandiligong were given a tumultuous welcome at Wangaratta Railway Station. Fresh from the fighting in South Africa, where Duncan had distinguished himself in several actions, the two men were greeted by the Town Band playing “Home, Sweet, Home” as the train pulled in, then “Rule Britannia” and rounding off with “See the Conquering Hero” while Duncan and Wallace were cheered aboard a drag which carried them in triumphal procession through the streets to the Theatre Royal, where a ceremonial banquet had been prepared.
with Naturopaths Belinda McPherson and Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) ◆ GET ACTIVE: Building some walking or other general exercise into your day can help boost your immune system during winter.
How to reduce the toll of winter health flare ups IT can be normal to get 2-3 colds or flare ups a year, and if you have a healthy immune system you will recover in a few days and have no lingering post viral symptoms (cough, fatigue, aches, loss of voice etc) - that is, you should feel completely recovered and back to normal. If you are prone to body aches, headaches, sore throats or fatigue in winter, there are some common strategies that will help most people. 1. Keep warm, keep good circulation: Try dry skin brushing before a hot shower, eat warming herbs like rose-
mary, turmeric, cinnamon and garlic daily, have hot baths with Epsom salts every week and swap to warm stews and soups. Now is not the time to start a raw diet or green smoothie challenge. 2. Hydrate: Ensure you keep up two litres of fluids – hot teas, warm water and soups all count towards your fluid tally. Coffee and soft drinks do not. 3. Fresh air: Keep in mind we are not indoor plants – even in winter we thrive when we get fresh air. Try a walk at lunch time, or walk to work, use essential oils on a damp cloth to clean and freshen the house – rosemary
and eucalyptus and tea tree are specific for winter. Flick a few drops into the shower recess for an invigorating morning shower. Add indoor plants to your workspace/home to bring in more oxygen. 4. Rest and sleep: Winter is the hibernation time of year. Permission to go slow and introvert. Cut back on vigorous exercise and just do gentle movement to support your energy and immune system, rather than focus on burning calories. Your body is not smart enough to prioritise both.

Magical midwinter MORE solid winter weather has helped ensure good snowfalls across the North East in the past week or so, making it a haven for snow enthusiasts. At Falls Creek, new runs in Sun Valley and the north facing slopes have opened up, and good snowfall continues to ensure the resort’s ski-in, ski-out experience. Falls Creek will host the South Australian Interschools Snowsports Championships throughout this week until Friday. The event gives primary and secondary school students a chance to learn and showcase their skiing and snowboarding skills. Saturday, July 20 will see the Vic Junior Sprint Champs, with the Vic Junior Distance Champs happening on Sunday. At Mt Hotham, while they are few official events this week, there is plenty of fun to be had on runs and trails throughout the resort. They recently opened their advanced skiing and snowboarding terrain in Heavenly Valley. Meanwhile, at Mt Buller, this Saturday will see the Burton Cat-
tleman’s Rail Jam in the Village Square, one of the most hotly anticipated rail events of the winter season. Mt Buffalo had light snow cover at the time of going to press, with snow play, tobogganing and cross country skiing dependent on snow coverage. The Dingo Dell Café and Visitor Information Centre is open to visitors. To find out up to date information on Mt Buffalo, see ski.com.au or talk to your local ski hire business. FOLLOWING on from last week, this is the second article about the scence of light. If you’d like to read part one, you can find it at https://issuu.com/provincialpressgroup/docs/re100719/8. Refraction Light waves travel in straight lines through empty space (a vacuum), but more interesting things happen to them when they travel through other materials—especially when they move from one material to another. That’s not unusual: we do the same thing ourselves. Have you noticed how your body slows down when you try to walk through water? You go racing down to shore at top speed but, as soon as you hit the water, you slow right down. No matter how hard you try, you cannot run as quickly through water as through air. The dense liquid is harder to push out of the way, so it slows you down. Exactly the same thing happens to light if you shine it into water, glass, plastic or another more dense material: it slows down quite dramatically. This tends to make light waves bend— we call this refraction. Refraction is amazingly useful. If you wear glasses, you probably know that the lenses they contain are curved-shape pieces of glass or plastic that bend (refract) the light from the things you’re looking at. Bending the light makes it seem to come from nearer or further away (depending on the type of lenses you have), which corrects the problem with your sight. To put it another way, your glasses fix

your vision by slowing down incoming light so it shifts direction slightly. Diffraction We can hear sounds bending around doorways, but we can’t see around corners—why is that? Like light, sound travels in the form of waves (they’re very different kinds of waves, but the idea of energy traveling in a wave pattern is broadly the same). Sound waves tend to range in size from a few centimeters to a few meters, and they will spread out when they come to an opening that is roughly the same size as they are—something like a doorway, for example. If sound is rushing down a corridor in your general direction and there’s a doorway opening onto the room where you’re sitting, the sound waves will spread in through the doorway and travel to your ears. The same thing does not happen with light. But light will spread out in an identical way if you shine it on a tiny opening that’s of roughly similar size to its wavelength. You may have noticed this effect, which is called diffraction, if you screw your eyes up and look at a light in the dark. As your eyes close, the light seems to spread out in strange stripes as it squeezes through the narrow gaps between your eyelids and eyelashes. The tighter you close your eyes, the more the light spreads (until it disappears when you close your eyes completely).
Where does light come from? Energy is something that doesn’t just turn up out of the blue: it has to come from somewhere. There is a fixed amount of energy in the Universe and no process ever creates or destroys energy—it simply turns some of the existing energy into one or more other forms. This idea is a basic law of physics called the conservation of energy and it applies to light as much as anything else. So where then does light comes from? How exactly do you “make” light? It turns out that light is made inside atoms when they get “excited”. Think of the electrons inside atoms as a bit like people sitting on a ladder. When an atom absorbs energy, for one reason or another, the electrons get promoted to higher energy levels. Visualise one of the people moving up to a higher rung on the ladder. Unfortunately, the ladder isn’t quite so stable with the person wobbling about up there. The person becomes concerned about falling, and so they return to the rung they were on before. In so doing, they have to give back the energy they absorbed. That’s pretty much what happens when an atom absorbs energy. An electron inside it jumps to a higher energy level, but makes the atom unstable. As the electron returns to its original level, it gives back the energy as a flash of light called a photon.
