Standing up for the aged By CORAL COOKSLEY

IT has taken more than a decade of hard work to open doors to be heard by Tangambalanga’s Maria Berry - a passionate advocate for better treatment and care of elders in rural, regional and remote regions. A nursing background in aged care, personal experience as a carer of ageing parents as well as elder abuse in the family has led Maria on a challenging journey to make a difference in the life of others by bringing a voice to older generations. A house fire caused by an electrical fault where all was lost combined with her father’s death and litigation by a family member in 2017 has not deterred Maria’s unwavering quest. She was influenced to take up the profession of aged care nursing, which she loved, by a mother who loved older people. “My Mum was a hairdresser and worked for what used to be the Ovens and Murray Hospital for the aged before it became Beechworth Health Service and that’s where I did my training,” Maria said. “But at the end of my nursing career I started to see changes in the field which were very disappointing and when my Mum became ill 15 years ago I was appalled at how she was treated.

Caring for your rabbit RABBITS make great pets for children and adults alike. Mainly because they are very social animals so love attention and playing. It is very important for a pet rabbit to have company, either in the form of another rabbit or getting sufficient attention from their owners. Rabbits make very good pets for children because they are generally docile and safe around children. People are often unaware that rabbits have a few special requirements to prevent some diseases. Rabbits have teeth that continue to grow and they need to always be chewing at hay to keep these worn down correctly. Rabbits do need some pellets as a supplement to their diet but too much will cause a rabbit to stop grazing and allow the teeth to grow incorrectly causing severe dental abnormalities. Too much in the way of rabbit pellets can also lead to urinary tract infections, obesity and digestive upsets. Rabbits need housing that is insect proof to limit the risk of myxomatosis and flystrike. Myxomatosis is spread mainly by fleas, but can also be spread by mosquitoes. It is a fatal disease that cannot be treated. Flystrike (maggots) can also be fatal if not discovered and treated early. Flystrike occurs when a rabbit is wet around the tail end. The flies lay their eggs on the wet

with Toulla Crameri, Ovens and Kiewa Veterinary Hospital

patches and the eggs hatch to become maggots that burrow into the skin. The rabbit’s environment needs to be cleaned of waste matter every day and also needs to be dry. As with every animal, rabbits need fresh water every day. If they become dehydrated, they are at high risk of getting food stuck as it tries to transit through the rabbit’s digestive system. Always allow access to fresh water. Rabbits can be vaccinated each year against calicivirus, a fatal disease for which there is no cure. The first vaccination can be given at 10 weeks of age. Rabbits can be desexed at about six months of age. Female rabbits should be desexed. The females have a tendency to become aggressive if left entire. They become difficult to handle and can become neglected due to the owner’s fear of being bitten or scratched. The uterus also undergoes changes that will often lead to cancer. People need to be gentle when handling rabbits. If they are restrained improperly and struggle to escape, they can actually dislocate their spine.

with Garden Releaf Australia ◆ FLOWER POWER: Gardening benefits people of all ages.

Gardens for the young and the old GARDENING is described by many as a life skill and of great value to children but it really does not matter what age you get involved. Caring for living greenery, be it a couple of indoor plants, a pot of tomatoes or an entire garden will expose you to a variety of important life lessons and skills such as learning that reward is associated with effort, building resilience makes everything stronger, be patient and persist as things can take time, empathy, nurturing and caring is good for everyone. As your garden grows it will teach you accountability and responsibility and to respect the elements whilst teaching about life and death. You may also find that maths, science and even history can be used in everyday life. Intergenerational gardening is the art of older generations passing gardening skill, knowledge

and cultural traditions onto younger generations. While this often occurs within family structures people do not need to be related, in fact activities such as this will provide learning opportunities and important social interactions to benefit all involved. Gardens and plants provide a common ground where negative generational stereotypes can be counteracted, quality time can be spent with others outside sharing life experiences and learning skills in a safe environment. Research shows us that for the older generation it can improve physical and mental wellbeing and life satisfaction and for the younger generation it can introduce a creative outlet for non-technology based skills, interest and hobbies that have a positive impact on greening their world.

YOUR HEALTH

Dal Zotto Wines 2019 Pinot Grigio JUST when you think the world couldn’t get any crazier, you ďŹ nd yourself in a regional supermarket thousands of miles away from the epicentre of a virus outbreak, looking at some empty shelves. They say it’s some kind of fear mechanism that kicks in which drives people to panic and hoard, apparently losing the ability to think rationally or to conduct a balanced assessment of risk. I reckon there’s also over sharing of misleading information, combined with a “me ďŹ rstâ€? attitude to life which would have had our more seless forebears hanging their heads in shame. On the brighter side, what I have enjoyed seeing is people’s suggestions for things they would like to have handy if they found themselves stuck at home, from favourite novels to box sets and chocolate. My list would include old movies, salty snacks and wines including Dal Zotto’s Pinot Grigio. This beautiful white wine is pale in colour with a fruity and oral nose, with hints of honeysuckle and perhaps some apple and white nectarine. It is vibrant and has a mineral

with Anita McPherson

freshness and balanced acidity; with avours of pear and the zing of lime. I like it chilled which enhances that vibrancy, but it’s those aromas which are really delightful and heady. This remains a versatile variety on the table, so well suited to white meats and seafood but also beautiful with grilled vegetables or a vegetarian lasagne - if you run out of meat. Keep calm and carry on enjoying this wonderful life. Available from local outlets or go to www.dalzotto.com.au.

This Day in History, 1894 TODAY marks the day that WH Foster, a well-known police magistrate in the early days of the colony, died. He was a cadet on the staff of La Trobe, Victoria’s first Governor, and then had been made a Gold Commissioner at Ballarat when he was only 21 years old. In later life he served as a police magistrate at Sale, then Beechworth.

with Naturopath Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) â—† TIME POOR, HEALTH POOR: The biggest barrier to a healthy lifestyle can be ďŹ nding the time. But maintaining our health must be a priority, and even half an hour in the day can make big difference.

Time: the best natural medicine OVER the years I have been working as a naturopath I have learnt that the most precious resource we have for keeping healthy is time. And most of us seem to be deďŹ cient in it. I have a strong passion for using food as medicine, and as a student I believed that every ailment stemmed from a poor diet and nutritional deďŹ ciencies. After six years in clinical practice and working with hundreds of people I have learnt that while diet is still fundamental, the biggest deďŹ ciency my clients face is lack of time: time to get a full nights sleep, time to prepare fresh food, time to shop for healthy ingredients, time to eat, time to exercise, time to sit in the sun, time for a bath or cup of tea, time to meditate, time to brew a cup of herbal tea, time to be patient, time to be creative, time to learn something new,

time for holidays, time for fun. The above are the building blocks for staying well, and without them we will topple off the edge of health very easily. Interestingly everyone has the same 24 hours in a day, but what we choose to prioritise that time for differs greatly. Do you prioritise long hours at work over exercise or family time? Do you stay up late to watch TV at the expense of quality sleep? Or do you make it a priority to get up half an hour earlier to go for a walk? Maybe you leave work on time so you can make a meal from fresh ingredients? Making time for your health is essential if you want to feel well and look well. Time is one of our most precious medicines and if we cannot ďŹ nd time for relaxation, contemplation and fun, it is very hard to maintain good health long term.

Standing up for the aged From page 1

“Despite my nursing background I was at a crisis point back then not knowing where to get help,” she said. Growing up on a farm in Leneva with fond memories of farm life, Maria never in her wildest dreams imagined how the tables would be turned against her parents with financial abuse at the hands of a family member which spiked for her father after her mother’s death. “My father was at risk of becoming homeless before he died,” Maria said. With these experiences, Maria wanted to help community elders navigate health systems for aged care and raise awareness of elder abuse where she could also contribute to solutions.

“My aim is to push for, and support reforms and change laws,” she said. “My father wanted to help others in the same position and from his legacy I’m continuing - that’s why I’m doing it.” Championing improved treatment of elders led Maria to embark on an Alpine Valleys Community Leadership Program (AVCLP) - a 10 month course where she graduated in 2018. “The team encouraged me to apply to be a speaker at the 5th National Elder Abuse Conference in Sydney and it was the start to opening doors that would never have happened otherwise,” Maria said. “The problem is still largely not on people’s radar unless they have been touched by the experience in

some way,” she said. With so much more to be done Maria is working with farming families too. “It’s about awareness and how conversations are opened up,” she said. “We need more reforms, extensive education and funding is needed for research.” Without a population-level prevalence study of elder abuse in Australia, a 2016 report from the Australian Institute of Family studies estimated elder abuse between two and 14 per cent where neglect could be at higher rates. House in Canberra. “The association is over the line with a law passed for ‘A National Registry of Powers of Attorney’ but more recommendations are to be implemented,” she said. “Another two - one for somewhere for people to go to report financial abuse, and the other to have the same laws in every state, are waiting to be actioned. “At the end of day we can’t do anything unless we have laws to stop the abuse.” From volunteer to a national advocate, Maria has been a health consumer representative with organisations at regional, state national and international levels. Dirty, but fish biting GONE FISHING

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA SOME waterways across the region are still really dirty thanks to recent heavy rain falling on the extensive areas burnt out by the recent bushfires. All is not lost however and fish are starting to be caught in the dirty water. I have had several reports of Murray cod being caught in the dirty Ovens River over the last week, including from Tarrawingee, Wangaratta and Peechelba. All cod were caught on bait with yabbies and cheese being the best baits. Lure fishermen might struggle in the dirty water, but bait fishermen are certainly finding success which is great to hear after a run of really slow cod fishing lately. As the nights get longer and cooler, the region’s trout streams are cooling down and starting to fish well. I fished the Ovens River upstream of Bright last Thursday with my wife and we managed to catch a few brown and rainbow trout. Thanks to nearby trout fishing areas being burnt out, and the Victorian Fisheries’ golden tag program, there were a lot of anglers fishing in the Ovens River. There seems to be a very healthy population of trout in that area despite the increased fishing pressure it is seeing, however they are quite shy and can be hard to trick with artificial lures. I caught my trout on small minnow lures called a Mag bite

◆ NICE COD: Eight year old Hugh Wiedemann caught this 64cm ripper Murray cod in the Ovens River on a yabbie last weekend. Well done Hugh.

Gracy, and a 38mm Pontoon21 Greedy-guts -both very natural looking minnows. When trout fishing in areas of high fishing pressure, the more natural your lure looks the more chance you will have of fooling the wary trout. Nothing looks more natural than a well presented fly. Fly fishing is very popular in that area. Worth noting, I have not heard any reports from Lake William Hovell or Lake Buffalo over the last week, but both lakes have risen dramatically. Lake Buffalo almost completely filled after last week’s rainfall and is very dirty, but hopefully it settles soon.

Levels of Abstraction - Part 3 THIS article will conclude our look back through computer science history. The Transistor By the 1950’s, vacuum tube based computing was reaching its limits. Vacuum tubes were large, prone to blowing out light bulbs, and the sheer amount of them required to build more and more complex computers meant that size was becoming a major issue. A radical new technology was required to propel computing into the future, and in 1947 Bell Laboratory scientists John Bardeen, Walter Brattain and William Shockley delivered just such a technology - the humble transistor. While a transistor relies on complex quantum mechanics, at its core it behaves just like it’s forebears, the mechanical switch and vacuum tube. It’s a switch that can be opened or closed by applying electrical power via a control wire. Transistors typically have two electrodes separated by a material that can sometimes conduct electricity, and other times resist it - known as a semiconductor. The control wire attaches to a ‘gate’ electrode. By changing the electrical charge of the gate, the conductivity of the semiconductive material can be manipulated, allowing current to flow or be stopped. Even the first transistor at Bell Laboratory showed tremendous promise - with the ability to switch on and off 10,000 times per second. Moreover, unlike vacuum tubes, which were fragile, transistors were a solid state component, which meant that they much less likely to break, and could immediately be made many times smaller than the smallest vacuum tube or relay. This of course led to dramatically smaller computers, such as the IBM 608 - the first fully transistor powered commercially available computer. IBM began transitioning all of its computer products to transistors, for the first time bringing practical scale computers into offices and, eventually, homes as well. Today, computers use transistors

TECH & SCIENCE

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ IT’S ONLY LOGICAL: Boolean logic gates comprise the fundamental operations of a computer. Combined together, these simple logic circuits create complex operations that enable computers to do all the things you do with them today.

that are smaller than 50 nanometres in size. For reference, the newspaper you’re reading this article on is roughly 100,000 nanometres thick. Pretty incredible, hey? Much of the transistor and semiconductor development occurred in the Santa Clara Valley in California, and since the most common material used to create semiconductors is silicon, this region soon became known as Silicon Valley. Boolean Logic and Binary Machine Code It was with the transistor that computer scientists were finally able to begin creating complex machine code, and with it, truly useful computers that were able to do far, far more than the simple arithmetic they had been employed to do up to this point. Employing the on and off states of transistors, and the principles of a system of logic developed by George Boole in the 1800’s - known as Boolean Algebra - scientists could develop machine code that could be interpreted by computers. This machine code is known as Binary code - a language made up exclusively of ones (the on state of a transistor), and zeros (the off state of a transistor). Boolean logic was intended to surpass Greek philosopher Aristotle’s approach to logic, which, unsurprisingly, was rooted in philosophy and not mathematics. George Boole’s approach allowed truth to be systematically and formally

proven through logic equations. Unlike regular algebra, in boolean algebra variables are either true and false, and the three fundamental operations performed on those variables are ‘not’, ‘and’, and ‘or’. A ‘not’ operation effectively flips a variable - it flips true to false and false to true. An ‘and’ operation looks for at least two inputs, and will only declare true if both inputs are true. While an ‘or’ operation also looks for at least two inputs, but will declare true if any of the inputs are true. And the great thing about boolean systems of logic is that they can be easily built using transistors in a series known as ‘logic gates’, and a series of these functions together can perform incredibly complex tasks - the proof of which is in the computers we take for granted today. And it is with this system of logic that computers today are able to read the input from, say, pressing the ‘a’ key on a computer keyboard, and display the letter ‘a’ on your computer screen. In reality, a boolean logic function has been performed, manipulating transistors, and it would be written as ‘01000001’ in binary code. In terms of the on or off states of transistors, this would be ‘off ’, ‘on’, ‘off ’, ‘off ’, ‘off ’ - I’m sure you get the idea. Thankfully, when we want to write the letter ‘a’ we don’t have to physically turn switches on and off like people did back in the earliest days of computing, and it is this lack of direct physical interference we call ‘abstraction’.
