FROM learning her skills from her photographer and writer father, Frank Madigan, to capturing landscapes all over the world on film today, Rosemary Oldis feels most at home behind a camera. “He taught me to always have a camera around my neck and to have patience in waiting for the “moment”,” Rosemary said of her father’s tutelage, adding that she also became well versed in the practical skills of photography. “He loved to say that if you were able to use even one image from a whole roll of film you were doing well. “He would also say to me ‘don’t let people see your less than perfect shots, Rosie!’.” Rosemary has fond memories of also being joined by her mother, Dorothy, who was a skilled mimic and could often call birds that they could then photograph in a fleeting moment. A secondary school teacher, Rosemary moved to Tawonga with her family almost three years ago, and has truly taken to the North East and its beauty. Rosemary said she has never been far from a camera since those formative early days, and said that she often loses herself in the moment when taking pictures. “Photography teaches you to live in the moment and to be observant,” she said.

The most common tax time mistakes THE Australian Taxation OfďŹ ce (ATO) has proďŹ led the ďŹ ve most common tax time mistakes. Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said it’s often simple mistakes and misunderstandings that trip people up. “While we know most people want to get it right, our audits and reviews show that there are ďŹ ve main areas where taxpayers are most likely to get it wrong.â€? The top ďŹ ve mistakes include taxpayers who are: t -FBWJOH PVU TPNF PG UIFJS income – maybe forgetting a temp job or money earned from the sharing economy t $MBJNJOH EFEVDUJPOT GPS QFS sonal expenses – home to work travel, normal clothes or personal phonecalls t 'PSHFUUJOH UP LFFQ SFDFJQUT or records of their expenses t $MBJNJOH GPS TPNFUIJOH UIFZ never paid for – often because they think everyone is entitled to a ‘standard deduction’ t $MBJNJOH QFSTPOBM FYQFOTFT for rental properties – either claiming deductions for times

when they are using their property themselves or are claiming interest on loans used to buy personal assets like a car or boat. Ms Anderson says many of the mistakes are avoidable and there are a few things taxpayers can do to make sure their tax time experience is stressfree. “Know what you can legitimately claim. “There are three golden rules for work-related expenses. “You must have spent the money yourself and not have been reimbursed, it must be directly related to earning your income, and you must have a record to prove it, Ms Anderson said. “This tax time we will be paying close attention to claims for private expenses like home to work travel, plain clothes, and private phone calls. “We will also be paying attention to people who are claiming standard deductions for expenses they never paid for.

Time to prune roses

Winter has well and truly settled in with some good frosts and a little bit of rain. Rug up and head out to your garden to prune your roses. It is that time of year again. Most roses have dropped their leaves by now, so it is the perfect time to give them a good hard prune and tidy up in preparation for spring. One of the most important things is to have the right equipment. A good pair of sharp secateurs - you want nice clean cuts - and a pruning saw - very handy for larger branches. Gloves are also a good idea if you don’t want thorns catching you.

Is your business celebrating a milestone, a renovation or relocating in 2018 or 2019?

going to grow the direction you want the branch. Never cut back so hard that you go below the graft. Once you have ďŹ nished pruning clean up all the stems and leaves from the ground (leaving these only encourages fungal diseases to harbour there over winter). Spray with a copper based spray or lime sulphur to help prevent black spot and powdery mildew. All you have to do now is wait for those lovely new shoots and give them a feed early spring when they really start to get going. Happy gardening.

The purpose of pruning the roses back reasonably hard is to allow lots of lovely fresh growth come spring so you have more owers. If there are any leaves still on remove these so you can see and access the framework of your rose better. If your roses have grown rather large over summer you can start by cutting back a fair bit of the length of the stem. After that open up the centre, you are basically creating a vase shape. Cut off any branches that are damaged or crossing over each other. It is important to cut to a bud that is

Xylitol toxicity in dogs XYLITOL is a natural sweetener that is being increasingly used in food or other products in Australia as a sugar alternative. It is most often used in lollies and chewing gum, but can also be found in toothpaste, mouthwash, peanut butter and sometimes in baked items. It is quite poisonous to dogs, with only small amounts causing illness. A stick of sugar free gum containing xylitol is enough to be a toxic dose for small to medium sized dogs. As a sugar alcohol it triggers the body to release large amounts of insulin that in turn drives down the blood sugar leading to all the problems associated with hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar). These symptoms usually present within 15-30 minutes of ingestion and may include vomiting, lethargy, wobbliness, collapse, seizure or in the most severe cases fatal liver failure. In some cases poor blood clotting may develop and bleeding occurs.

with Tim Craig, BVSc VETERINARIAN If not diagnosed and treated promptly xylitol toxicity can easily lead to death from low blood sugar. Treatment centres around replacement uids containing glucose and potassium, which is depleted in the blood by excess insulin as well. Blood test monitoring is required to ensure the blood sugar and potassium normalise and remain normalised. Liver parameters are also monitored as the development of liver failure carries a much poorer prognosis. As always, prevention is better than cure. Avoiding sugar free lollies and gums is a must. If you suspect your dog has eaten a xylitol containing product then inducing vomiting promptly may stop clinical signs developing.

“My mind is wired now to see images everywhere and to be constantly subconsciously assessing the light. “It sometimes feels as If I see life through a camera lens. “I truly believe that, for me, photography is not a conscious process but more a way of seeing the world. “Light is the magic ingredient of photography, so my process is to notice the special light in moments and then to quickly decide how best to capture it before it changes. “A successful image capture will make my day. Over the years, Rosemary said she has found much joy and inspiration in joining photography clubs, and has taken photos in landscapes across the world, from the North East to Scotland, Scandinavia, Iceland, the Faeroe Islands, Fairbanks in Alaska, Nauru and the Solomon Islands. Her work has been recognised overseas, with her winning fourth place in the International Loupe Awards in the Amateur Landscape section in 2013, as well as having an image included in the International Landscape Photographer of the Year competition in the Top 101 Landscapes section. “Each success is amazing as I enter full of hope but with low expectations, she said, but acknowledged that winning awards had been a personal highlight. Rosemary said that the North East continues to inspire her work every day. “The North East is full of special places and amazing changes in weather, she said. “A fellow photographer observed that transitions are where good images are to be found: transitions between weather events; or the transitions between valley and mountain; or the transitions as the seasons change. “The Kiewa Valley is one of the most beautiful places that I have ever seen and it is reminiscent of Scotland with its rugged mountain grandeur and contrasting green valleys. One of her favourite places to photograph, however, is Lake Eppalock, near Bendigo, where moods vary

from misty mornings to bright night skies and dramatic shadows and reflections of dead trees in the lake. Rosemary said untamed landscapes and night photography were her biggest passion for their unpredictability and beauty. “I love the snow for its amazing ability to distil a landscape to its simplest form and to render it monochrome. “I love wild places because there the photographer is the observer, not the controller, and you must just relax and allow yourself to find the image, rather than try to pre-

Foods for good gut health

EVERYONE is now well versed in the idea that a healthy gut requires a good bacterial balance, with various strains of probiotics. With the current health trends promoting all kinds of groovy ferments like kombucha, krauts, kimchi etc, it is easy to forget the cheapest, easiest ways to cultivate these good guys. I am reminded of this as I start to introduce my baby to foods after six months of a breastmilk only diet. The research suggest that babies digestion has a limited number of bacteria (improved with vaginal birth, mothers diet and health whilst pregnant, breastfeeding) and that we build on these as they are exposed to food. foods is the best way to increase the exposure of probiotics in humans. Adding ferments into a diet of rich, fatty, processed style eating, will do little more than add to your wind issues! We also know that antibiotics, chemicals and environmental pollutants will kill off various strains and impact on our bacteria variety. The best gut foods are really not exotic and they are very economical: lentils, beans, nuts, seeds, veggies, fruits, herbs and spices with small amounts of traditional ferments like tamari, yoghurt, tempeh and those mentioned above. By 12 months old babies could certainly be eating most of these and

as adults we definitely should be exposed to these a few times a week if we want good ‘biosis’. Daal is my favourite nourishing ‘biome cultivating’ comfort food. When combined with rice, a tiny serve of natural yoghurt and a small side salad (like grated beetroot and carrot, almonds, grapefruit pieces) dressed in olive oil, tamari and squeeze of lemon, it ticks all the gut health requirements. This is a balanced vegan (minus the yoghurt) or vegetarian wholefood staple for winter. Add the left overs in a toasted wrap the next day and don’t forget to give babies eight months or older a small serve every now and then.

We may be able to point and shoot and even very successfully adjust and edit, but that doesn’t guarantee the final product will be outstanding. with Anita McPherson It’s a variety worth seeking out if you enjoy an interesting, aromatic style, as it has a really enjoyable floral scent reminiscent of rose essence. It also has a pleasant weight in the mouth and lasting fruit flavours of apple and lychee, with a backdrop of honey, which promise to develop and become richer over some time. At the moment there’s a citrus lift which adds to its food-friendly nature, and it’s a treat with spicy Asian dishes. This is a wine that showcases the variety because of some artful winemaking. Almost half of working Aussies plan on changing jobs this financial year – here’s why OF skilled professionals, 46 per cent plan to look for a new job in the next 12 months, with a lack of promotional opportunities the main motivating factor for more than half (53 per cent), says recruiting experts Hays. According to the 2018-19 Hays Salary Guide, just one-quarter (26 per cent) of the 1200 skilled professionals surveyed ruled out looking for a new job in the coming 12 months. The ďŹ nal 28 per cent were unsure. Of those planning to look elsewhere, 48 per cent cite an uncompetitive salary as a factor. Other motives are a lack of new challenges (44 per cent), poor training and development (29 per cent), poor work-life balance (26 per cent) and a poor beneďŹ ts package (21 per cent). Just two-ďŹ fths (40 per cent) are extremely or very satisďŹ ed in their current job. 41 per cent and 51 per cent are extremely or very satisďŹ ed with their current employer and current direct

TECH & SCIENCE

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ THE ZOMBIES ARE COMING: (From left to right) An ant infested with a parasitic fungus, the emerald wasp leading a cockroach host to it’s lair, and a snail who’s eye stems have been taken over by a parasite worm.

Zombie animals: invasion of the body snatchers THE natural world can be a beautiful and breathtaking place, full of wonders and mystery. It can also be the stuff of nightmares. The animals, insect and fungi in this week’s list certainly ďŹ t into the latter category as they all share one freaky trait in common - they turn their prey into zombies. That’s right, zombies aren’t just a shock horror trope, the affliction actually exists in the animal kingdom, and it might even be worse than it’s ďŹ ctional counterpart, at least for it’s victims. Zombie ants In the rainforests of Brazil lives a fungus known as ophiocordyceps unilateralis. The spores of this parasitic fungus fall onto carpenter ant colonies where they infect an unsuspecting ant. It was previously believed that O. unilateralis would infect the brain of the ant, but new research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences has shown that the ant’s brain

is left unaffected, and that the fungus instead controls the actions of its host by inďŹ ltrating and surrounding the muscle ďŹ bres of the insect. Once infected, things go from bad to worse for the poor carpenter ant. Like a puppet master, the fungus will force the ant to leave it’s nest and climb a nearby leaf. It will then force the ant to clamp down on the leaf with its mandibles, signifying the ďŹ nal action the ant makes. From there, over the course of up to 10 agonising days, the fungus will grow inside the ant, until it protrudes outside the ants body like a large, thick antenna, all while the ant is still alive. Sporse will then form on this antenna and rain down upon the ant’s former colony, infecting more ants. Talk about invasion of the body snatchers. Zombie snails If you thought carpenter ants had it bad, wait until you read this. Leucochloridium is a parasit-

ic worm that invades a certain species of snail found in Europe and North America when the snail passes over infected bird droppings. This parasite, known as a sporocyst, castrates the snail and sits around the liver, soaking up nutrients the snail digests until it grows large enough that it sends out tentacles that tunnel through the snails body to it’s eye stems where it forms a brood of larvae. It’s at this point things get interesting, in a horrifying sort of way. At the tip of a snails eye stem sits a rudimentary eyespot, which is really only good for discerning light and dark. The snail can’t see color, and the eyestalk doesn’t have the muscles required to focus. But what the snail does have are muscles that retract the stems, which it can then redeploy by pumping them full of uid. But when a leucochloridium worm has burrowed it’s way to the eye stems of a snail, they become engorged and can no longer retract.

Furthermore, the worm is able to control the snail and force it to come out during daylight hours (snails are typically nocturnal). Even more interesting is that the brood of larvae that hatch in the eye stems will pulsate, mimicking the movement of caterpillars, which to a bird ying overhead, look awfully delicious. The bird will then swoop down, eat the snails eyes, and ingest the parasite. The worms will then reproduce inside the bird and leave the bird through it’s droppings. But what about the poor snail, you might ask? Well, because birds don’t typically eat snails, they usually will only eat the snails infected eyes. The wounded and blinded snail might well survive the whole ordeal, regenerate it’s eye stems, and regain the ability to reproduce, potentially creating more hosts for the parasitic worms, or becoming a host again itself. The horror. Zombie cockroaches Say hello to the emerald (or

jeweled) cockroach wasp. If you thought European wasp stings were bad, have I got news for you. The emerald wasp is found predominantly in South Asia and Africa, and it has one of the most unique and mortifying methods of reproduction in the animal kingdom. This solitary wasp will leave its burrow in search of a cockroach that will soon suffer a terrifyingly gruesome end. The wasp will stalk its larger prey, waiting for the right moment to sting it with surgical precision. The wasp’s ďŹ rst sting will temporarily paralyse the cockroaches front legs. The second sting will inject venom directly into the cockroaches brain, disabling it’s mechanism to ee the predator, but leaving it otherwise unharmed. The wasp will then wait a few minutes for the venom to take full effect, watching as the cockroach reexively grooms itself, aware of the danger it’s in, but unable to run away. The wasp then bites off one

of the cockroaches antenna and drinks it’s blood, testing the toxicity level to ensure the correct dose of venom has been administered. The wasp then grabs the cockroach by the antenna and walks it back to its burrow where it will lay a single egg on the soft part of the cockroach. The cockroach, still unable to run away, will then sit inside the burrow as the wasp entombs it, covering the entrance with leaves, branches and pebbles. The egg will hatch, and the larvae will then burrow inside the cockroaches body, devouring it’s internal organs before forming a cocoon inside the cockroach’s body. Once the larvae has matured into an adult wasp, it will then burst through the cockroach’s carapace, leave the burrow, and the whole, horrid cycle begins. So not only does the emerald wasp zombify cockroaches, it’s hatches like a xenomorph straight out of the Alien ďŹ lms wonderful. Now, who’s up for a nice nature walk?

Ready, steady, drama! MasterChef’s 10th season CHANNEL CHAT

THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS:

SHOW: MasterChef CHANNEL: Ten TIME: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday.

You Can’t Ask That: Survivors of sexual assault. (ABC, 9pm, Wednesday) The series returns with a bang, such a thought-provoking watch that really makes you think about other people’s persepctives and experiences.

with Leah Anderson Byrne NOW in its 10th season, MasterChef Australia promised a “season full of surprises, where contestants will be tested by the biggest international and local culinary legends and challenged to create delicious and beautiful home-cooked meals set to ensure a truly exceptional series.” Whether this promise was fulfilled, is up to you. Having watched the series for many years, and bopping away to Katy Perry’s ‘Hot n

Cold’, I’ve come to enjoy the intensity and drama and emotional aspect of the show. This said, however, my inclination to watch this season, and the last season, was not very strong due to the dramatics taking over the focus on the food, which is a hard thing to justify for a cooking show. The excitement of the show, though, easily entertains all ages; everyone loves food, everyone loves watching com-

◆ TERRIFIC TRIO: MasterChef judges Gary Mehigan, Matt Preston and George Calombaris take on season 10.

petition and everyone loves hearing Matt Preston say palate 30 times in each episode. Getting to watch aspiring chefs and cooks blossom and learn and potentially win is also a great aspect of the show. Viewers become a part of their culinary journey and can salivate as they watch the

dishes they creative in each episode. Personally, cooking under pressure would result in a lot of mess and a not-so-edible outcome, but competing between friends and family in a more relaxed event, could be a fun way to get the ball rolling at a gettogether.

Skippy the Bush Kangaroo (Nine, 3am, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday) What a classic! And about as aussie as you can get. Put aside any worries you have about the kangaroo’s in reality, because this little guy is about as cute as they get! HerStory (ABC, 8.50pm, Thursday) A discussion involving indigenous women.
