Natural inspiration
By BELINDA HARRISON
GROWING up on her family’s farm in Byawatha gave local artist Lisa Bishop not just a deep love for nature, but inspiration. “My Dad was a shearer and I remember sitting in the wool clippings and trying to draw him in all the positions a shearer gets into and the way the fleece would drape around his feet so beautifully,” she recalled. In her teen years, her drawings took on darker, fantastical elements inspired by heavy metal music with dragons, blood, death and gore taking centre stage. “My Mum hated going into my room when it was covered in all those images,” Lisa admitted with a laugh. Luckily for her mother, Lisa’s paintings eventually became softer and she focused more on the gentler fantasy side, completing several murals in Melbourne with fairies and wonderland themes. “I lived in Melbourne for 10 years, working as a beauty therapist, where I got to be creative,” Lisa said. “I became well-known for my nail art and body painting, and won the Australasian Nail Art competition three years in a row.” When Lisa and husband Steve moved back to the area to start a family, they built their home on Lisa’s parents’ farm near “Rosie,” a Yellow Gum named after Lisa’s grandmother. “It was Nanna’s favourite tree and is well over 100 years old,” she said. “When she passed away, we named it after her.

Cryptorchidism CRYPTORCHIDISM is the incomplete descent of one or both testes into the scrotum. The undescended teste can end up in a variety of locations from the inguinal area outside of the abdomen, right up to just behind the kidney, which is where it started out. For the majority of dogs and cats, the testes should be in the scrotum by two months of age. In some cases it can take longer, but they will rarely descend further after six months of age. Undescended testes are more common in purebred animals and it is thought to be an inherited problem. A unilateral cryptorchid is more common than a bilateral and the right teste is retained twice as often as the left in dogs. Rarely is the retained teste a cause of pain or discomfort, even if it sits in the inguinal canal. There is a chance the spermatic cord of the retained teste can become twisted. This will cause an acute onset of abdominal pain and the affected teste would need to be surgically removed. The main risk of not removing a retained test is the signiďŹ cant possibility it will become neoplastic (cancer).

with Dr Megan Lee, Ovens & Kiewa Veterinary Hospital Removing the retained teste is usually straight forward, if it can be easily located in the inguinal canal outside of the abdomen. Most of the cases we see are like this. It can get a lot more complicated when the teste is inside the abdomen. Sometimes they are easily found, but at other times they are quite tricky to ďŹ nd, and a large incision may need to be made to be able to explore the abdomen from the kidney to the inguinal canal opening. They are often smaller as well, which can make them difficult to locate. As this condition is heritable, it is advised to remove affected males from breeding lines. If you think your pet has an undescended teste they need to be checked by a vet and ideally booked in for surgery to remove the retained testes before it can become cancerous. Ideally, this surgery is done before 12 months of age, but should deďŹ nitely not be left later than four years of age.

â—† INDIGOFERA AUSTRALIS: A little bit of knowledge about the scientiďŹ c names of plants can be a helpful thing. You don’t need to study classical languages or be an expert in plant taxonomy to look for the clues in a name. It can make the whole gardening experience richer, even if you’re not a plant nerd like me.
What’s in a name? Latin and Greek for gardeners - part 1 HAVE you ever pondered the names of plants? Usually we know plants by their common name, although these can be fraught. One plant can have several common names, and one common name can also apply to several different plants. By their very nature, common names are only given to common plants. But common to who, and to where? To be sure we are all talking about the same plant, it’s really useful to know its scientiďŹ c name. Latin became the standard language for naming plants in the eighteenth century. An enthusiastic Swedish naturalist, Carl Linnaeus, introduced a system of ‘binomial nomenclature’ whereby the basic name of a plant has two parts – the generic part and the speciďŹ c part. Thanks to Linnaeus we’ve had a consistent and robust naming
system across the world since the 1750’s. Each plant is known by its genus and species. This is a bit like using a surname and then a ďŹ rst name. For example a peach tree is Prunus persica. Its cousin the almond tree is Prunus dulcis. These names are generally written in Latin, or Latinised words from other languages, particularly Greek. The botanical names of plants can at ďŹ rst seem daunting. They can be long and difficult to pronounce. Often though, they are made up of several smaller parts and if we take the time to break them down, they actually make a lot of sense. The names may relate to a characteristic, colour or country of origin of the plant. For example, northern red oak is Quercus rubra. The genus name Quercus (Latin
for oak) applies to all oak trees and the species name rubra means red. Here’s some common Latin terms used for plant colour: Dark – atra Black – niger White – alba Red – rubra Pink – rosea Blue - caerulea Purple – purpurea Yellow – lutea Green – virida One of our beautiful local pea shrubs is Austral Indigo, or Indigofera australis. The word Indigo is an ancient Greek term for Indian dye, an ancient natural dye for colouring textiles. Fera is Latin for wild (as in feral). The species name australis is another Latin term for southern, referring to its distribution in Australia. So we have a wild Aussie plant which produces dye. I ďŹ nd that fascinating.

This Day in History, 1915 A SPECTACULAR overnight fire destroyed Zwar Bros tannery at Beechworth. The factory was one of the largest of its kind in Australia and working to capacity meeting domestic demand and fulfilling military contracts overseas. Rather than rebuild in Melbourne, A M Zwar decided to build again in Beechworth, displaying the same commitment to the town in the 20th century that G B Kerferd had shown in the 19th. The factory was rebuilt, bigger and better than ever. In the 1920s it installed electric generating capacity, and was able to supply Beechworth with power until the SEC took over the service in the 1940s.
with Naturopaths Belinda McPherson and Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) ◆ PAIN: Certain lifestyle habits can help alleviate period pain.
Six simple tips for reducing period pain PERIOD pain is caused by the muscles in the uterus contracting. This group of muscles is extraordinarily strong and also flexible, but can be prone to cramping, congestion and spasm when out of balance. Diet, herbs and supplements can work wonders, but these lifestyle tips are something we talk about with all our women who present with hormonal issues. If the pain is debilitating or severe, by all means try these, but we definitely recommend that you see a doctor or gynaecologist to get a diagnosis and a naturopath, doctor and or gynaecologist (or ideally all three!) for a specific treatment plan. 1. Sanitary products: Organic cotton pads and tampons reduce the chemical toxicity and inflammatory load to the uterine area. For some women this can

FOR the first time, the number of commercials for pre-prepared meal delivery services appears to have eclipsed the number spruiking life and funeral insurances on the telly. While trapped at home one day, I couldn’t believe there was a market for not only having meals delivered, but boxes of ingredients and recipes “so you can spend time on more important things.” Forgive me, but feeding yourself and your family is maybe the most important thing you can do, and spending time together planning, shopping, preparing and eating, are actually a lot of fun. Let’s stop making a chore of what should be a simple pleasure, like sitting down to dinner with family and a bottle of Brown Brothers 1889 Tempranillo. The range is named after the year John Francis Brown made his first vintage at the Milawa family winery in the King Valley. This variety is one of my current favourites and the Brown Brothers version does not disappoint; the purple-red, medium bodied wine alive with cherry fruit and spice aroma. That vivid aroma begs you to

Lisa’s art driven by natural inspiration Ŝ
From page 1
“I love the strength and majestic beauty of its branches and the shade it provides is brilliant in the scorching summers.â€? “Rosieâ€? and farm life in general have inuenced Lisa’s art for many years. “When we ďŹ rst moved back, my brother gave me an old wooden chair and I painted a bright little farm scene on it,â€? she said. “I tried a few welcome signs and did up other old bits of furniture and whatever else I could slap paint on.â€? That led to Lisa having a stall at the Oxley Bush Market and her new business venture really took off with people ordering chairs which Lisa painted their own farms and houses on. “It’s an individual piece of artwork that they can display as well as use practically in their homes, or take it with them when they’ve
moved away from that place that they loved so much, she explained. In addition to local homes, Lisa’s paintings take pride of place in houses in New Zealand, England, Germany, Singapore and the Netherlands. Her murals can also be found in a number of businesses including the Milawa Hotel, Milawa Mustards, a childcare centre and an olive farm. It was the knowledge of these artworks which prompted another local – interior designer Kate Nottingham of City to Country Design – to contact Lisa to paint the enchanted forest theme she envisaged for the entrance to the kids’ area in the re-design of the Wangaratta High Country Library. “The goal was to create something beautiful that attracted not only the kids but the parents too, Kate said. “I absolutely love the playfulness
of Lisa’s art and the intricate details that overlay her bold colours. “I thought she was the perfect artist for this job. Lisa admitted that the biggest challenge for her with the mural at the library has been the height factor. “I hate heights, but luckily I have a very tall Dad and he helped out a lot, doing the base coat for me on day one. I don’t know what I would have done without him, she said. “I am very honoured to work with Kate’s vision and colour pallet. “It’s something different for me as I’m used to big bright colours but the library is much softer native bush tones. But Kate’s belief in me and my work really helps. As does the belief from Lisa’s family; husband Steve is her biggest supporter and has backed her every step of the way. “We are an awesome team, she said.

“Whatever crazy thing I come up with he ďŹ nds a way to make it all happen and sorts out the practical side of things. “He is the one that suggested I open my little shop in Chiltern which has been the best move I ever made.â€? Daughters Grace, 19, and Violet, 17, also inspire Lisa. “I see their different stages in life come out in my work constantly,â€? she said. “Grace is a barber by trade but also draws fantastically and has a keen eye for detail, while Violet, who is hoping to one day become a paramedic, works in the shop and has her own style and clientele.â€? Lisa holds painting workshops at her shop/studio in Chiltern and said she loved teaching people to “not stress about a blank canvas and splash a bit of paint around for the fun of it. It’s all about the fun for meâ€?.

A few trout caught SPRING is well and truly here, and my nose seems to be running harder that the King River at Whitfield. With the flowers and pollens that the spring sunshine brings comes an increase in insect life, which in turn brings upon better trout fishing. I took some annual leave last week and spent a lot of time trout fishing across North East Victoria - I call it trout fishing reconnaissance. My observations are that trout numbers are not nearly as great as they once were, however there are trout around if you are willing to persevere and look around. Some streams had trout in some areas and not others, and some streams seem to simply just have no trout. My tip is to look for a trout stream with decent habitat - a gravel bottom instead of silt, deep pools with plenty of trees along the banks, particularly anything flowering that looks like a hay fever suffers worst nightmare. Of the bigger rivers, I continue to get pretty good reports from the Ovens River upstream of Bright.

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA As with last week, nothing fancy, but most people seem to be catching one or two trout. I have had a similar report of two trout being caught in the King River just below Lake William Hovell, once again not great numbers. And, over on the Kiewa River it has been the same story, a couple of trout being caught here and there but no big numbers. If you’re willing to travel there are still quite a few massive rainbow trout to 4kg being caught in the Goulburn River around Thornton as a result of Victorian Fisheries recently stocking the ex-brood trout into the river for trout opening. I have not received any reports of yellowbelly from the known hot spots yet, but I am sure they will begin to trickle in really soon.
Anti-solar panels could be the answer to the sun problem THE age old problem with solar power generation is that it requires the sun to work. Or does it? A team of scientists and engineers out of Stanford University, California seem to think that the sun is overrated and have created a working prototype of the first anti-solar power device which harvests energy from the cold night sky. By harnessing the temperature difference between Earth and outer space, the prototype of the device produced enough electricity at night to power a small light emitting diode. Okay, so it might not be quite ready to revolutionise our means of energy production, but as a proof of concept, it’s exactly the kind of counter intuitive idea that’s right up my alley. A larger version of this nighttime generator could someday light rooms,
charge phones or power other electronics in remote or low-resource areas that lack electricity at night when solar panels don’t work. The core of the new night-light is a thermoelectric generator - a solid state device that converts heat flux (temperature differences) directly into electrical energy through a phenomenon called the Seebeck effect. The top side of the generator is attached to an aluminium plate sealed beneath a transparent cover and surrounded with insulation to keep heat out. This plate stays cooler than the ambient surroundings by shedding any heat it absorbs as infrared radiation. Meanwhile, the bottom of the generator is attached to an exposed aluminium plate that is continually warmed by ambient air. At night, when not baking under the
sun, the top plate can get a couple of degrees Celsius cooler than the bottom of the generator. Engineer Wei Li of Stanford University and colleagues tested a 20 centimetre prototype of the device on a clear December night in Stanford, California. The generator produced up to about 25 milliwatts of power per square meter of device — enough to light a small LED bulb. The team estimates that further design improvements, like better insulation around the cool top plate, could boost production up to at least 0.5 watts per square meter. It will be interesting to see if this technology can be improved upon by increasing the temperature disparity between the top and bottom plates, and what the practical applications could be developed as a result.
