RE-ELECTED as Indigo Shire mayor last month, Jenny O’Connor is no stranger to local government and politics having grown up in an influential sphere when she was young. The daughter of a father in the teaching profession and a councillor for many years with a mother who was a social worker, Jenny’s interest in the political and government arena was also influenced by close family friend Pauline Toner, the first female cabinet minister in the Parliament of Victoria and Labor Party member. An understanding of business and the land was gained too as the eldest grandchild of the late Edith and Eric Hoy who were transport operators in the skiing industry in the early 1930s where they ran buses between Wangaratta, Harrietville to Mount Hotham as well as having family in farming. Jenny was born in Wangaratta but raised in Melbourne and her career took many pathways from training as a registered nurse at Melbourne’s Mercy Private Hospital, to becoming a counsellor working in community health. As a single mum, Jenny also helped successfully leverage rights for solo mothers when she travelled to Canberra to meet the Federal Health Minister at the time. “I had grown up believing that politicians are just people and if you want something to happen you go talk to them,” she said. For close to two decades she worked in health areas of drug and alcohol abuse, sexual assault and family violence both in the city and rural regions and returned to the North East 25 years ago. In shifting back to the country, Jenny first lived in Harrietville, establishing a business and managing the Centre Against Sexual Assault in Wangaratta. With a move to Beechworth in 2003 she worked in primary health care at Beechworth Health Services and started running for politics a year later.

In such cases, the best thing is to return them to the nest but if that’s not possible, the parents will look after them on the ground until they are able to y. Their biggest threat is from dogs and cats, so try to keep your pets indoors if you know that a family of raptors is nesting nearby. ◆ GRAVITY FALLS: Creating a water reservoir can help if you haven’t got someone looking after your indoor plants while you’re away.

Watering indoor plants while on holiday

IT’S the end of the year and you’re preparing for a well-earned break, but who’s going to look after the indoor plants while you’re away? A good neighbour QFSIBQT #FMPX BSF TPNF HPPE UJQT UIBU * IBWF DPNF across and one I use, the bathtub tip, with success. #FGPSF ZPV HP BOE HJWF ZP VS JOEPPS QMBOUT B HPPE deep soaking, remember that most indoor plants will survive about a week without water but if you’re planning on going away for longer think about these options: 'JMM B CVDLFU CJO PS CJH QPU XJUI XBUFS BOE QMBDF JU on a tabletop or other elevated area. That’s going to be your water reservoir. Cut several pieces of garden twine to create a wick, pre-soak them then place one end into the water reservoir and stick the other end into the soil of your indoor plant. I’d try and secure the ends of the twine somehow. Make sure that the water reservoir is elevated, so that the water can ďŹ nd its way down with the help of gravity. The garden twine will slowly carry water to your plants. The longer you’re

away, the more water you’ll need. Use your bath and place a towel on the bottom to avoid scratching your bath, place your indoor plants onto the towel and ďŹ ll the bath so that it is just covering the towel and reaches the bottom of the pots. It may help to pull a curtain or blind three quarters of the way down to avoid leaves burning if the tub is close to a window and to reduce evaporation loss. Plant into self-watering pots. Place saucers underneath your plant pots. Most modern pots don’t come with saucers so if this is the case, take a visit to your favourite recycling thrift store and ďŹ nd an old dinner plate to place under your potted plant. Gather all your plants into the same area in a room to increase the humidity and water well. Choose a spot that’s not getting too much direct sunlight, otherwise there’s a risk to burn the leaves. Take care with any of these methods if you’re using them for cacti or succulents as you run the risk of overwatering and killing them.

YOUR HEALTH

Sam Miranda King Valley 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon ONE of the things I most look forward to at this time of year is when my favourite red fruits come into season, like raspberries and cherries. Last year a bower bird got into the vegie patch and polished off my own berries just days before I was going to pick them, so I’m relying on other local growers to have a good harvest as back up. There is something festive and happy about even the look of a glossy red cherry; ripe blackcurrants are like nature’s boiled lollies, and raspberries are truly a gift from the gods. It’s almost unfair that the season for something so good is so short. Thank goodness then that even in the depths of winter we can curl up on the couch with a glass of red and drink in a little of the aroma of some of those most delightful fruits. Sam Miranda’s Mountain Range cabernet sauvignon is made from fruit grown in the cool ripening conditions of the King Valley where the fruit can take its time to ripen and develop its flavours. The dark, purple red liquid sings with spicy, forest fruit

aromas like blackcurrant and woody herbs. It’s rich and savoury, but also with some red currant-like zing adding vibrancy and complexity to the mix, along with some earthy herbal notes. This wine is a versatile drop for those who like a red with dinner and it sits well with barbecued meats and rustic pasta dishes like lasagne. Let’s give thanks this form of fruit is available all year round.

Available from the cellar door in Oxley or visit www.sammiranda.com.au. Around $20

This Day in History, 1863 REPORTS that Surveyor Darbyshire had discovered lime deposits on Mitchell’s station on the Little River and the discovery of a substance reported to be graphite near Yackandandah. The latter discovery, made by a prospecting party at Kinchington’s Creek was identified as graphite by a member of the party who was a Cumberland man familiar with graphite mining. Later, the ore was suspected of being molybdenum.

with Naturopaths Belinda McPherson and Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) ◆ OIL RIGHT: Over the counter supplements you can purchase in bulk may be low dosage, poor quality and may be off by the time you take them.

Oils ain’t oils, ain’t oils OFTEN we hear clients say that they are taking fish oils for improved brain function (memory, cognition), skin health (eczema, acne, psoriasis), cardiovascular health (BP, healthy cholesterol) or as a part of their pre conception/pregnancy regime. Fish oils are well indicated in these diseases/situations. However, often these clients don’t see an improvement in their symptoms or pathology. Hmmmm, why is that? Well, oils ain’t oils. Over the counter fish oils that you can buy in mega tubs in the supermarket and chemists are often low dose, poor quality and are dispensed in such large containers that they are rancid (gone off, contributing to your inflammation load) by the time you take them. This is not helpful when the aim of fish oils is to reduce inflammation in your body. Practitioner only oils that we use in clinic are tested for their purity, the company checks for things often found in cheaper oils

such as mercury, lead, cadmium and arsenic and other fat-soluble toxins found in our waterways and larger fish species. They also obtain their oil from smaller fish, reducing the toxic load, they are harvested in a sustainable way and in areas of clean waters. Reputable companies also remove any impurities that make their way into our waterways such as pesticides, dioxins, persistent organic pollutants. These pollutants and toxins accumulate in the body, particularly fat stores, and affect its ability to function optimally. When taking fish oils as part of your pre conception or pregnancy regime, these considerations are of the highest priority, as these oils make up the foundations of your baby’s cells, brain cells and DNA make up. So, when considering fish oils please consider if you are contributing or hindering it by using over the counter supplements in particular fish oils. And as always, seek professional advice from your naturopath.

Passion and proactivity From page 1

“I’ve been a candidate in a number of elections, both state and federal for the Indi and Benambra electorates, as I felt there were no strong political voices on important issues particularly climate change and social justice - two areas I’m passionate about,” she said. “There’s insufficient funding for things like schools, roads and hospitals and being a political candidate gave me an opportunity to fight for it. “I knew it was a long shot but it was about getting those issues out into the public arena.” With a passion to drive improvement in communities for their well-being and to prosper, Jenny also sees the need for more women to play a role in rural local government and was first elected in 2012 as an Indigo Shire councillor. “I loved my town of Beechworth, saw so many opportunities for growth in the shire such as tourism and agriculture which I wanted to support and help develop, as well as protecting the heritage of our towns.” Stepping back into the role last month for the

next mayoral year - a position that she previously held for two years from 2016 to 2018 - Jenny said she believes a good councillor engages with communities representing their different points of views and interests. “You’re often representing people in the community who don’t necessarily agree with you on issues so you need to be a good listener, understand their different points of views, represent them fairly and at the same time stand by one’s own values. Jenny thinks the community is well represented by its councillors at Indigo Shire with the council exercising good democracy. “Everyone knows their own patch but every time we speak, we represent people who elected us so we need to represent the whole shire. Jenny said two main things she would like to achieve revolve around climate change and adequate council funding. “With changing climate a genuine threat to our community we are barely equipped to deal with this. “Experiencing major fires and understanding

the science, I have been advocating about climate change since the early 2000s and am really worried about the future for our children. “It’s happening now and our communities are at risk in the fire season. “My job is to work with emergency services to find out what we can do to be ready. “My other role is advocating for proper funding for our small rural shire where we have a very small revenue base and a very large demand on the budget. “Advocacy is about getting the resources to meet the needs of our communities. “We need to gain funding by talking with state and federal politicians. “I want our council to be sustainable into the future financially, economically and socially knowing that our wonderful communities are growing and thriving and that takes investment which is the reason I ran as a candidate in the last state election.” Jenny said rural communities should be great places to live from birth to end of life with that focus needed when making decisions.

Another gold rush with mining jobs VICTORIA’S resources boom is producing a massive rise in local jobs, with the State Government’s support of the minerals exploration sector leading to huge investment by companies in Victoria. The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics ďŹ gures show Victorian mining employment rose 41 per cent last ďŹ nancial year, supporting an average of 16,000 jobs across the state. The data also shows that expenditure in minerals exploration – the precursor to mining development and investment – has grown more than fourfold since the beginning of 2015. The updated Earth Resources Sector Indicators Report proves Victoria’s second gold rush, with production increasing by 16.7 per cent in the 2017-18 ďŹ nancial year alongside a 136 per cent rise in new licences for exploration. The health of the sector has been buoyed by a rising gold price, which broke the $2000 per ounce mark for the ďŹ rst time this year – around 15 per cent higher than this time last year – sparking more investment in exploration. The future of gold in Victoria is bright with

estimates that only half the gold that may exist in the state has been found over the past 170 years, and strong results from Kirkland Lake Gold’s Fosterville Mine sparking international interest in the minerals sector. The Labor Government released the North Central Victorian GoldďŹ elds Ground Release tender last month, opening the potential for more gold exploration to the east and north of Bendigo. The tender will require successful companies to demonstrate that they will engage with traditional owners and local communities, boosting jobs for regional Victorians. An exemption on a royalty for gold production will end on January 1, bringing the state’s gold producers in line with other Victorian resources operators and every other state in Australia. The royalty will only apply to Victoria’s largest gold mines, which have continued to prosper in 2019. Fosterville recorded Australia’s third biggest gold output for the quarter to September, while Stawell Gold Mine returned to production earlier this year.

GONE FISHING

TECH & SCIENCE

YOU ARE HERE*

◆ NICE CATCH: Jake Hamilton with his magnificent Trout Cod caught on a surface lure last weekend.

*(approximately)** **(you might be elsewhere)

Plentiful fishing over Christmas Well folks this is my final fishing report for 2019, so based on current conditions and recent activity here is a bit of a fishing forecast for the Christmas/New Year period. The Murray cod fishing should be great just about everywhere. If there is a waterway with cod in it, they will likely be on the bite for most of the time. They may switch on and off a little bit with changes to weather conditions but on the whole they should be on the chew. Mitta Mitta River, Kiewa River, Ovens River, Buffalo River, King River, Broken River, Murray River, Lake Mulwala etc… These waterways all hodd decent number of Murray cod and this is the best time of the year to catch them. Anglers wanting to target trout should head high. Lowland streams are too warm now. You may get one or two but on the whole the water has warmed and the trout have slowed. Upper reaches of the Ovens River upstream of Bright, the Buckland River, and the upper Buffalo River upstream of Abbeyards are all worth fishing. The upper reaches of the King River around Pineapple Flat will also be worth a try although it may be quite busy up there

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ DON’T PANIC: Our solar system is located is located around 25,000 light years away from the centre of the Milky Way,

Our super, spirally Milky Way with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA over the holiday period. If you’re wanting to target yellowbelly, Lakes Hume, Elidon and Nillahcootie are the places to go. I have had similar reports from all three lakes this last week and that has been that the yellowbelly have been biting, but they’re not in schools and have not been caught in great numbers. If you’re after redfin, I caught 2 small ones at Lake Hume just casting lures from the bank during the week. Lake Hume will be worth a try, so too will lake Sambell in Beechworth. I predicat that Lake Buffalo and Lake William Hovell will fish quite slow for redfin for a while yet. I would like to thank you all for the wonderful support that you have given me, and this column all year, and would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Our Sun and all the planets around it are part of a galaxy known as the Milky Way Galaxy. A galaxy is a large group of stars, gas, and dust bound together by gravity and they come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The Milky Way is a large barred spiral galaxy - all the stars we can see with the naked eye in the night sky are in our own Milky Way Galaxy. Our galaxy is called the Milky Way because it appears as a milky band of light in the sky when you see it in a really dark area. It is very difficult to count the number of stars in the Milky Way from our position inside the galaxy. NASA’s best estimates tell us that the Milky Way is made up of approximately 100 billion stars. These stars form a large disk whose diameter is about 100,000 light years. Our Solar System is about 25,000 light years away from the center of our galaxy - which means we live in the ‘suburbs’ of our galaxy. Just as the Earth goes around the Sun, the Sun goes around the center of the Milky Way. It takes 250 million years for our Sun and the solar system to go all the way around the center of the Milky Way. We can only take pictures of the Milky Way from inside the galaxy, which means we don’t have an image of the Milky Way as a whole. Why do we think it is a barred spiral galaxy, then? There are several clues. The first clue to the shape of the Milky Way comes from the bright band of stars that stretches across the sky. This band of stars can be seen with the naked eye

in places with dark night skies. That band comes from seeing the disk of stars that forms the Milky Way from inside the disk, and tells us that our galaxy is basically flat. Several different telescopes, both on the ground and in space, have taken images of the disk of the Milky Way by taking a series of pictures in different directions - a bit like taking a panoramic picture with your camera or phone. The concentration of stars in a band adds to the evidence that the Milky Way is a spiral galaxy. If we lived in an elliptical galaxy, we would see the stars of our galaxy spread out all around the sky, not in a single band. Another clue comes when astronomers map young, bright stars and clouds of ionized hydrogen in the Milky Way’s disk. These clouds, called ‘Hii regions’, are ionized by young, hot stars and are basically free protons and electrons. These are both important marker of spiral arms in other spiral galaxies we see, so mapping them in our own galaxy can give a clue about the spiral nature of the Milky Way. There are bright enough that we can see them through the disk of our galaxy, except where the region at the center of our galaxy gets in the way. There has been some debate over the years as to whether the Milky Way has two spiral arms or four but the latest data shows that it has four arms. Additional clues to the spiral nature of the Milky Way come from a variety of other properties. Astronomers measure the amount of dust in the Milky Way and the dominant colors of the light we see, and they match those we find in other typical spiral galaxies. All of this adds up to give us a picture of the Milky Way, even though we can’t get outside to see the whole thing.
