FROM the ‘annoying little sister on the sidelines’ to an AFL Women’s (AFLW) champion, Daisy Pearce has come a long way since her Auskick days in Bright. Her list of achievements as a footballer is impressive a 10-time premiership player (seven of those as captain), six-time best and fairest VFL Women’s winner, five-time Darebin best and fairest winner, captain of Darebin in the Victorian Women’s Football League (VWFL) and VFL Women’s (VFLW) from 2008 to 2016, representing Victoria three times at senior and under-19 level, being drafted in the inaugural AFLW season in 2016 by the Melbourne Football Club, where she was also named captain for the 2017 and 2018 seasons and won their best and fairest award both years (Daisy missed the 2019 season due to giving birth to twins Roy and Sylvie in February 2019), dual AFL Women’s All Australian player, captain of the AFL Women’s State of Origin match, where she was adjudged as best afield and now, as returning captain of Melbourne in 2020 after working hard to regain her fitness and hunger to get back to playing professionally. That’s to say nothing of Daisy’s off-field media work as a boundary rider with Channel 7 and SEN covering AFL and AFLW matches, appearing as a panel member of AFL Game Day and hosting her own podcast on SEN since last year. “I’m so thankful for the opportunities I’ve had with Channel 7 and SEN and the support and confidence they’ve thrown behind a raw country girl who just simply loves the game,” she said. Daisy also holds a Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Midwifery from La Trobe University (Bundoora campus) and received La Trobe University’s Young Achiever Award last November. The award is presented to former students who have achieved significant career success within a relatively short period of time, and that couldn’t be truer for Daisy. “I feel like there are many more deserving winners than me but I was truly humbled to be recognised,” Daisy said of the achievement. Her introduction to football was no accident - her father had played and loved football all his life and Daisy’s older brother was also playing when she fell in love with the sport. “Like a lot of country towns, the footy club was pretty much the heartbeat of the community when I was growing up and I loved spending time there...I started playing as soon as I was allowed (which was at age 6),” Daisy said.

Chocolate poisoning in dogs ABOUT this time of year as the shelves in the supermarket begin to ďŹ ll with chocolate Easter eggs we usually begin to see an increase in the number of cases of chocolate toxicity in dogs. Clinical signs range from mild gastroenteritis with vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain to restlessness, hyperexcitability, hyperirritability, increased heart rate possibly with arrhythmias, increased urination, excessive panting and muscular tremors. Severe cases may progress to hyperthermia seizures, coma and even death. So what is it about chocolate and how much does a dog need before you need to rush it to the vets? The toxic drug in chocolate is theobromine which is a component of cocoa beans. This is a Xanthine compound in the same family of caffeine and thophylline. The dose at which you could expect a dog to begin to experience signs of toxicity is about 100mg of theobromine per kilogram bodyweight of the dog. Chocolate varies considerably in its concentration of theobromine with milk chocolate containing about 1.6mg theobromine per gram whereas dark chocolate and cooking chocolate contains up to 14mg theobromine per gram. So how much chocolate does it take to poison my dog? A 165g milk chocolate easter egg contains about 264mg of theobromine

with Andrew Colson, B.V.Sc.(Hons) Veterinarian (enough to poison a 2.5kg dog eg; Chihuahua) where as a 165mg dark chocolate easter egg contains about 2310mg of theobromine (enough to poison a 23kg dog; Kelpie). The average “piece of chocolateâ€? measuring 15mm x 15mm x 10mm weighs about 10 grams (containing about 140mg theobromine) and two pieces of dark chocolate this size would be enough to poison a small dog or puppy. There is not a speciďŹ c antidote to theobromine poisoning but supportive therapy is usually effective. This includes the administration of activated charcoal to inhibit absorption, induction of vomiting if the chocolate was ingested within two hours of presentation, intravenous electrolytes, anticonvulsants and possibly oxygen therapy and control of hyperthermia. The half life of theobromine in a dog is 17.5hours thus the poison is metabolised and excreted with no residual effects if the acute poisoning is survived. The take home message is; no you don’t have to rush to the vets if you drop an M & M on the oor and the dog eats it, but it is probably best not to intentionally give dogs chocolate...ever.

Summertime and shady places MY youngest son asked me this morning “Mum, if you could be a tree, what tree would you be? I paused for a moment and thought about the unlimited number of options before deciding I’d like to be a River Red Gum - starting off as a miniscule seed and growing over centuries into a large majestic old dame with branches arching out across an ever-changing landscape below. I asked him what tree he would choose to be and he replied “... I’d like to be a sucker. I thought that was apt. He was probably thinking about the suckering trees in our garden they seem to get it easy compared to their mother tree that does the bulk of the nurturing in terms of drawing up moisture and nutrients from the earth. His curious question got me thinking, though, about the importance of trees, particularly at this time of year. Our block was quite bare when we moved in just over a decade ago.

It had only recently been converted from a grazing paddock with no trees into a housing estate. Fortunately, the previous owners had planted a few maples in the front yard. These have now stretched skyward to around 10 metres, with my more recent plantings about half that height. The summer shade they cast is invaluable. Of course they provide gorgeous colour in the autumn too. My latest addition for summer shade is an ornamental pear tree, Cleveland Select, which should grow to about 10-12 metres high by ďŹ ve to six metres wide. In our district we are blessed with some magniďŹ cent shade trees, many of which are in council parks and gardens. The King George V gardens in Wangaratta are well known for their stately plane trees. As well as plane trees, oaks, elms and ash dominate our local

streetscapes and are much sought after when parking. There are also many native street trees such as the Queensland Brush Box, Silky Oak and Bottlebrush. In terms of the home garden, smaller trees are probably a more sensible choice, unless you have a large block. Some good options are ornamental pears, crab apples, crepe myrtles and the forest pansy. There are also some lovely small forms of natives such as corymbias, angophoras and eucalypts. Your local nursery should be able to give you advice on trees suitable for your patch. There is a popular Chinese proverb which says: “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now. Better still, work out what type of tree is right for your place and plant it out after our intense summer heat has passed. You will be rewarded for years to come.

Childhood exposure to antibiotics, improving the side effects ANTIBIOTICS can be lifesaving and when prescribed appropriately is deďŹ nitely an important part of medicine. However, we know that antibiotics are over prescribed in Australia, perhaps given for a viral infection, when a disease would have healed on its own anyway given enough time, or when other treatment options could have been tried ďŹ rst. More than 25 per cent of Australian infants have been prescribed antibiotics in their ďŹ rst year of life. This early exposure can have lifelong whole-body effects including increased chance of developing food allergies and gut related symptoms. Optimising maternal and infant health is especially important when CSection, formula feeding or antibiotics are unavoidable and important choic-

“The boys I went to school with loved their footy and I was always joining in with them at school so couldn’t see why I shouldn’t be allowed to play with them on the weekend. “My teammates and the whole club were always very welcoming, despite me being the ďŹ rst and only girl in the team.â€? Even though Daisy’s work commitments (and that of her partner, Ben O’Neill) see her living in Melbourne, she hasn’t lost her love for Bright and the North East, returning to the area as often as time permits between her work and footy commitments. “I love going home; it’s made me pretty unadventurous on the travel front because every time I get a spare weekend or weeks off, it’s hard to go past Bright as the place I want to spend it,â€? Daisy said. “There’s always something to do no matter the time of year. “I have so many good memories of

my time growing up there, the best parts were deďŹ nitely the sense of community, knowing everyone and being allowed freedom to explore the rivers and bike tracks because of how safe we felt. “I loved being so close to the mountains and the endless amount of adventures we could go on. “Whenever I go back, the ďŹ rst thing I do is go for a swim in the river - I have a tradition that no matter what time of the year it is, I have to go for a swim. “The Buckland River is always a couple of degrees warmer so even though it’s still very cold in the winter months, I try to go there, otherwise there are heaps of good spots along the Ovens River when it’s a bit warmer. “With the recent bushďŹ re devastation, I hope to make a few more trips this year and to help encourage people to keep visiting the area as tourism is such an important part of the local economy.â€? GONE FISHING

TECH & SCIENCE

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ UNITS OF SOCIETY: The branching philosophies of individualism and collectivism have developed throughout history and continue to evolve today. Pressures such as geography, resources, conict and religion have formed our cultures’ understanding, appreciation, and practical application of these concepts. ◆ WHAT A BEAUTY: Collissa Saritschniy with a 90cm Murray cod caught in the lower Ovens River on a Jackall Pompadour during the week.

Some large Murray cod

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA to the lower Ovens River. From what I can gather, the Broken River downstream of Benalla and the Bundalong area are the two most consistent areas to ďŹ sh for Murray cod at the moment with a steady stream of reports coming in from both of those places, with the larger ďŹ sh being caught at Bundalong. I have had a couple of reports of redďŹ n being caught at Lake William Hovell, with most ďŹ sh being too small to keep. I also had a report of a couple of redďŹ n being caught at Lake Sambell in Beechworth this week. I would like to see a decent ush of water push through the Ovens River system at the moment, and wash out some of the dark, tannin stained water.

LIVING as we do today, it’s difficult to imagine the mindset of past civilisations. We can examine the remnants of ancient cities, translate ancient texts, piece things together, and draw certain conclusions, but it’s very difficult for us not to place our particularly modern lenses over these things and, consequently, develop a skewed view of just what the average person living in those times might have thought and believed. One pertinent example of this is the very concept of the ‘individual’ in the socio-political sense of the word. Put simply, classical liberal individualism did not exist in the ancient world. Since the 16th century and the advent of the nation-state, people in the West have come to understand ‘society’ to mean an association of individuals but for the ancient Romans and Greeks society consisted of a collection of extended families. The heads of the families, including family-based clans and tribes, held all the power and made all of the decisions. Only the heads of families could become citizens in the polis. Nor did antiquity hold the notion that the powers of the government were limited by the rights of individuals - even for family heads. Citizens belonged to the city, body and soul - women, children, slaves and non-citizens held no rights and lived only at the pleasure of the family head. Even today, individualism, and its branching political manifestations, are

still very much a Western peculiarity, with perhaps the most faithful and hardline adherence to the principles of individualism being the US. It may be of interest to know, for example, that one very cornerstone principle of individualism - freedom of expression - is not explicitly protected by the Australian Constitution (although our government has signed international treaties granting us such protection). Meanwhile, most countries in Asia, including Japan, Korea and China, as well as countries in South and Central America, and Africa, are considered to be collectivist. So what are the key deďŹ ning differences between collectivism and individualism? Collectivism typically stresses the importance of the community, while individualism is focused on the rights and concerns of each person. Where unity and selessness are valued traits in collectivist cultures, independence and personal identity are highly stressed in individualistic cultures. These cultural differences are pervasive and can inuence many aspects of how society functions. How people shop, dress, learn and conduct business can all be inuenced by whether they are from a collectivist or individualist culture. For example, workers who live in a collectivist culture might strive to sacriďŹ ce their own happiness for the greater good of the group. 2QH YRXFKHU SHU WUDQVDFWLRQ IRU RQH SHUVRQ

I HAVE had about as much success Murray cod ďŹ shing lately as I would expect to have eating soup with chopsticks. With the exception of a fat Murray cod that I caught while ďŹ shing for redďŹ n at Lake Buffalo recently my cod ďŹ shing has been frustratingly slow. The cod ďŹ shing across North East Victoria has been slow for a lot of people recently, not just me. Some people are catching cod in some areas, and some are experiencing good numbers of ďŹ sh, but for most of us it has been slow. There’s even been a handful of stand out catches of Murray cod this week. Sandy Hector caught a 100cm Murray cod last week on an 85mm JD Superbug. Collissa Saritschniy caught a 90cm Murray cod in the lower Ovens River on a Jackall Pompadour. Brendan Woodman caught a 67cm Murray cod last week on a number 2 stumpjumper also in the lower Ovens River. I, on the other hand, have caught and releasd three turtles in my last two ďŹ shing trips

Those from individualistic cultures, on the other hand, may feel that their own well-being and goals carry greater weight. This might lead one to erroneous conclusion that individualist nations tend to be less trusting of others, while collectivist nations are generally more welcoming, however, research conducted in Japan counters this idea. For the individualist, ‘every man is an island’, as the saying goes, and so when they encounter another island, they view them much the same as they do themselves, while collectivist cultures tend to form tight knit groups, tend not to stray outside of those groups, and can view others as ‘outsiders’. And if you are wondering why such disparate socio-political philosophies have formed across quite clearly deďŹ ned geographical lines, the answer lies with religion. It was a combination of the early Christian church’s strong discouragement intrafamilial marriage which forced people to move beyond the limits of their close knit tribes, and form new family units each generation, as well as the development of later monastic teachings and the Reformation that solidiďŹ ed the notion of the autonomy of the individual under God. Meanwhile, the values of the people of a country like Japan have been heavily shaped by the competing inuences of Shintoism and Buddhism, and the collectivist values, which prioritise the group over the individual.
