◆ THE SOUND OF MUSIC: David Ashfield has been involved in music all his life. PHOTO: Mel Guy.
By KYLIE WILSON WORKING on everything from musical theatre to teaching and performing, Wangaratta resident David Ashfield’s name is familiar to many in music circles and beyond in the North East. He first picked up the music bug during his childhood in Warracknabeal, when both his father and grandfather played in the local brass band. David soon followed in their footsteps by joining the band, beginning on drums but soon also learning the trombone. “That started my love affair with music,” hesaid. “I haven’t looked back since.” David moved to Wangaratta in 1989, working as a music teacher at Wangaratta High School - a role he would fulfil for the next two decades. From there, his involvement in music has grown exponentially. He began an association with the Wangaratta Music Theatre Company on a production of The Boyfriend and has been a music director - and often a musician - for countless musical theatre productions, getting involved with groups including Wangaratta Players Inc, Wangaratta High School, Galen Catholic College, Benalla Theatre Company and even Shepparton Theatre Arts Group.

Retained deciduous canine teeth in puppies LIKE humans dogs have two sets of teeth in their life. The deciduous teeth (baby teeth) are the first set and fall out to make way for the permanent (adult) teeth. The deciduous teeth begin to fall out at around 3.5-4 months of age and are generally all gone by seven months of age. The front (incisor) teeth are the first to go and loss of teeth progresses towards the back of the mouth. As the adult teeth begin to move upwards they put pressure on the roots of the deciduous teeth causing them to be reabsorbed and the visible part of the tooth to fall out. Sometimes this process fails and the deciduous tooth remains in the position that the adult tooth should be. The result is the adult tooth comes up out of position, often at an awkward angle. This can have consequences for the normal occlusion (bite) and lead to pain or damage to other teeth. Monitoring a pup for normal loss of the deciduous teeth during the
with Tim Craig BVSc, VETERINARIAN
four to seven month of age period is essential. If a deciduous tooth is retained you will see the smaller and pointier deciduous tooth next to the larger and more rounded adult tooth. Generally if both teeth are clearly visible it means the deciduous tooth has failed to fall out. Prompt identification of this is essential so that the deciduous tooth can be removed under anaesthesia. The sooner the retained tooth is taken out the better the chance of the adult tooth coming up in the correct position. Many pups are desexed at around six months of age and this gives vets the opportunity to examine the mouth and remove any retained teeth whilst the pup is already under a planned general anaesthetic.
VET CORNER BOISTEROUS Baxter is hoping to find his family soon, and the energetic puppy would make a loving companion for any family. The bull Arab cross staghound is only seven months old and although boisterous, he is very friendly. ◆ NATURAL WONDER: Spider web on Acacia merinthophora.
Maintaining the web of life GARDENS contain a complex web of life. Gardeners are partners in ensuring the continuing health of their small patch. We manage our plants and delight in the creatures that call it ‘home’. We delight in birdsong, chirruping crickets, maybe piercing cicada songs, the ‘ka-plonk’ of pobblebonks, a tiny spider’s fragile web. There are also unwanted and annoying creatures that invade our gardens. We squash a brood of redbacks found under a garden chair or tip out the saucer of water full of mosquito wrigglers. It is the gardener’s choice which remedy is used to manage garden pests: - chemical spray, toxic bait, exclusion netting or non-toxic means.
Chemicals such as DDT that were lauded in the 1950s as a catch-all solution to unwanted insect pests are now banned as they were toxic to untargeted ‘good’ species, entering the food chain and killing or adversely affecting birds and animals, including humans. Gardeners do need to control pests. Always being mindful of which method causes least harm makes good ecological sense. Tiny creatures, many unseen, inhabit gardens. Little spiders and insects are part of the web of life and food sources for the creatures that give us joy, pollinate the flowers or ‘naturally’ control pests. White oil is a non-toxic spray which has been used for generations.
It is easy to make at home from just two ingredients. It will control aphids, scale, mealy bug, citrus leaf miner and caterpillars on broad-leaved plants. It kills the pests by blocking their breathing pores so that they suffocate. White oil recipe In an electric blender or big glass jar, mix 4 cups vegetable oil [any sort] and 1 cup dishwashing detergent [any sort]. The mixture can be stored for up to 6 months in a cool place. Mixing rate: 1 tablespoon per litre of water. Spray or apply with a paint brush to cover all affected surfaces. White oil is not suitable for use on soft-leaved or hairyleaved plants.

Simão and Co 2018 King Valley Sauvignon Blanc IT can be amazing how different your favourite indulgences can be when treated a slightly different way by the person who created it. Like sourdough bread, for example, which although made from the same basic ingredients varies wildly depending on the starter, the hands of the baker and the oven they use. In the same way, when it comes to making a great dish, if you have quality ingredients, the skill is in handling them with restraint to ensure their best qualities shine. Seventh generation winemaker Simon Killeen is passionate about making wine unique to the region from which it comes, and that reflects the quality and character of the fruit from which it’s made. He’s proud that his Sauvignon Blanc, made from fruit sourced from a King Valley grower, often makes people who would normally write off the variety,
with Anita McPherson stop and think again. The wine is one of the reasons he made the top 12 in the 2019 Young Guns of Wine - the only winemaker from the North East to reach the top 50. This lightly straw coloured wine is not like the widely available Sauvignon Blancs from the land of the long white cloud most people may be familiar with. It’s fresh and vibrant, leaning more to the aroma and flavour spectrum of quince and lime. There’s bitey citrus, maybe even green apple and a little grapefruit, in that crisp, but then lingering finish. It’s a Sauvignon Blanc that gives you more to think about - and might just convert those sceptics. Find out more at www. simaoandco.com.au.

This Day in History, 1931 JUNE 20, 1931 was a great day for Yackandandah, as its recently completed Bush Nursing Hospital was opened. The ceremony was performed by Sir James Barrett, the Hon Secretary of the Central Council of the Victorian Bush Nursing Association. Sir James lavished praise on the building, which had cost 3000 pounds, and declared it to be the finest of its type he had seen, topping even facilities in the United States or Canada.
with Naturopaths Belinda McPherson and Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) ◆ DRINK UP: Hydration continues to be important during winter.
Beating the winter blues
THE winter blues normally hits you when it’s been cold and miserable for a while and you have the overwhelming feeling of being cold to the bone, tired, you have no motivation and you just can’t seem to get it together. At this point you realise your body isn’t working at its best; your bowels have slowed down, you are bloated and your exercise routine consists of walking to the car to go to work, or finding the remote for the television. You avoid social gatherings and you just can’t manage to stay on task. For most people the winter blues can hit after a cold, you get sick and then three weeks later you realise that you are still tired, headachy, moody and struggling to get out of bed. Most of us experience a mild drop in mood and feeling like we can’t be bothered at this time of year, but for some the depression type symptoms are debilitating.

yoga classes. Movement increase circulation of fluids. Circulation of fluids= delivery of nutrients and improved moods. 4. Make the most of indoor time: Clean out cupboards, stock the freezer with bone broths, smoothie packs, casseroles and make ahead meals. Ensure you are utilising your herbs and spices to boost your immunity and improve circulation. Or start a hobby, painting, crafts, reading etc. 5. Herbal medicine: Help boost immunity, improve recovery and resistance to winter bugs as well as improving energy and mood. So if you have or are suffering from a drop in mood or motivation/energy through winter, give your local naturopath a call and they can help you have the energy you need to get the best out of our beautiful region this winter.
Naturopaths’ top 5 tips to reduce winter blues: 1. Take a mini break: A weekend or even better a week away in sunshine gives you that boost of Vitamin D your body is looking for. Even a daily brisk walk at lunch time will boost your moods; improve energy and your productivity in the afternoon. 2. Hydrate: What do fluids do when they get cold? They slow down their movement and get thick. So keep your warm decaffeinated herbal teas, soups, broths and warm water with lemon or lime in it up. This will help reduce blocked glands and reduce aches, pains and headaches. Aim for a minimum of 1 litre of decaffeinated fluid a day. See our website for recipes or our herbal tea range. 3. Exercise: Keep moving! Hire a treadmill for the winter, get some workout DVDs or YouTube Pilates/

but said one of his favourite places to take students to perform is the Great Hall in Parliament House in Canberra, because of its “grandeur” and “fantastic acoustics”. “I love seeing the students meet the challenge”, he said of teaching and watching his students blossom through learning music and participating in music theatre. “Just being able to work with talented students has been a joy,” he said. “Music has been a passion all my life, and being able to share that with students is something I find rewarding.” David said he was also proud of the countless students that have been through his classes and gone on to forge careers in various musical genres as live performers. He has also played with several local big bands, including the High Society Jazz Orchestra and
Riverina Jazz Orchestra, and has also been an integral part of the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues, having been the director of the Reid Street stage program for around 17 years. David said that while the live music scene had diminished a lot in the past few years, he took solace in the resurgence of festival based performance opportunities for artists springing up across the region. While David will scale down his teaching duties in the years to come, he is not resting on his laurels - he is set to be the music director and drummer for Wangaratta Players Inc’s upcoming concert, A Night Of Stars, that will be performed in September as part of celebrations to mark the 10th birthday of the opening of Wangaratta Performing Arts and Convention Centre.

David has been involved in many shows he has enjoyed - from Grease to Hairspray - but said his favourite show that he has played on has probably been West Side Story, due to the challenging complexity of the music, but he also had a soft spot for Hairspray’s “great songs”. He has worked as a music teacher at Galen Catholic College for about 12 years and said he had found his long career in teaching very fulfilling. When it comes to community theatre he loves seeing actors and musicians alike work off one another, as well as enjoying working alongside other like-minded musicians. In his time as a music teacher he has been able to take bands to perform far and wide, including in Tasmania, Queensland and Sydney,

SNOW PLAY
◆ OUT ON THE SLOPES: Chairlifts were busy at Falls Creek prior to last week’s rain, which washed away a significant amount of snow. Everyone is hoping this week delivers expected more natural and manmade snow. PHOTO: Nathan Fenton
More snow to lift options at resorts
AFTER one of the best season openings in decades, last week’s rainfall diminished snow cover and reduced skiing and boarding options at all alpine resorts. More snow is forecast this week however, and resorts are hopeful of expanding the limited on snow opportunities that existed at Falls Creek, Mt Hotham and Mt Buller at the start of this week. While there are few official events happening at local mountains this week, there are plenty of activities on all mountains to welcome snow enthusiasts. There are also plenty of fun events planned for late June onwards at the North East’s resorts, and the Snow, Trek and Travel Mini Series will take place this Sunday. At Mt Hotham, the Brand New Day, aimed at beginner skiers and snowboarders, is scheduled will take place this Saturday.
June 22 will also see the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour at Mt Buller. Mt Buffalo is hoping to have snow play, tobogganing and cross country skiing available depending on snow coverage - with the Dingo Dell Café and Visitor Information Centre open to visitors, and to find out up to date information see ski.com. au or talk to your local ski hire business.

TECH & SCIENCE
with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ BOTS ON THE MIND: Could DNA based nanobots be the answer to treating a range of mental health disorders?
Mind-controlled, drug dispensing DNA nanobots ISRAELI designed mind-controlled drug-dispensing DNA nanobots could be a key treatment for people suffering from schizophrenia, ADHD, and many other mental health issues. While currently being tested on cockroaches, the bots show impressive results, and could target the symptoms of a given disorder more effectively, and with far fewer side effects, than drugs absorbed into the bloodstream. Researchers worked on this concept by creating DNA-based nanobots and injecting them into a cockroach’s brain. Then they taught an algorithm the difference between a human brain at rest and an active brain performing a simple task, like arithmetic. Once the two were combined, the nanobots were able to release drugs into the cockroach’s brain when a nearby person’s brain was active. Effectively, with further development, this means a patient could be administered drug treatment before the onset of
a violent schizophrenic episode. It could even be a great boon for the treatment of depression, and other difficult to treat mental illnesses. To work, the team at the Interdisciplinary Center, in Herzliya, and Bar Ilan University, in Ramat Gan, envisage a miniaturised EEG device worn in the ear that can monitor brain activity and trigger the nanobots inside a person’s body when required. “Our working prototype highlights the potential of such a technology in managing disorders to which no effective treatment exists,” the researchers explain in their paper, “and could inspire advanced modes of control over biological molecules in the body even outside therapeutic contexts.” Yet they caution that this prototype is still just a “demonstration and proof of concept”. Other researchers want to use technology to help diagnose those disorders by analyzing speech.
It’s possible that patients of the future could be diagnosed with the assistance of artificial intelligence and treated with drug-dispensing nanobots that live in their brains - with a doctor’s help, of course. While I personally find the concept of DNA nanobots to be extremely exciting, and Israel has again demonstrated they are quite the powerhouse when it comes to scientific research and development, it’s also heartening to see this technology being harnessed to treat such conditions. Historically speaking, mental illness has often been overlooked or demonised, and it’s been wonderful to see the recent awareness campaigns for all manner of mental health issues. And this is just the latest effort to use the brain to control tech. Companies are also working on mind-controlled drones and computer chips made out of brain cells that could be used in future devices. More on those subjects soon.
