Supporting fire victims By NICK SINIS

A DESIRE to do more and help the community is what inspired Jessica Davison to take on the role of bushfire recovery officer through the Red Cross in the devastated areas of Alpine and Towong shires. Ms Davison, who with her partner, is also an active member of Swanpool CFA, said she has a deep connection when it comes to aiding others through fire disaster. “We’ve got a small farm and a vineyard in-between Mansfield and Benalla and we were certainly very well aware of the bushfires over the summer,” she said. “We were impacted by the smoke and at one stage we helped one of our friends evacuate from Germantown, which is just a little further from Bright.” Ms Davison said it was this experience that urged her to take up the role with Red Cross. “It was really just wanting to do a bit more to help the community itself in that recovery phase,” she said.

◆ HELPING OTHERS: Jessica Davison has a strong passion to support others through the recovery process in her role with Red Cross after the severe summer bushfires.

SKIN conditions in pet rats are more common than you think, and they can be very difficult to diagnose and cause pets and owners a lot of frustration. The best thing to do is rule out the most common causes as best you can - an appointment with your veterinarian can assist with this. You should inspect your rat’s skin regularly. Obviously if you see parasites, you’ve found the main cause of your rat’s itching. However, scabs, itching and hair loss alone are non-speciďŹ c signs. If your rat has long, sharp claws, they can cause cuts and scratches to their skin during normal grooming. Michelini Wines 2018 Teroldego IT seems like our local wine producers have had an absolute nightmare of a year. They have always been resilient and used to withstanding everything Mother Nature throws their way, from frost and ďŹ re to droughts and ooding rains, but a pandemic was something no one could have expected. Even now it appears like it’s going to be a long, slow road to recovery rather than a sudden bounce back, which is why we need to do whatever we can to help them. There may have been little or no vintage at all in 2020, but it doesn’t mean there aren’t some great wines out there held in reserve for us to discover. And one of them might just be Michelini Wines Teroldego. This Italian wine variety hails from Trentino but is grown by Michelini in the Alpine Valley. It’s a cracker for red lovers looking for something a little unique which delivers in both style and substance. It has a deep purple and inky red colour and sings with blackberry fruit, both in its heady aroma where there is also a little blackcurrant - and in its absorbing avour. But that avour is also bold,

with Anita McPherson

dry and distinctly savoury, with a wild and earthy quality that suggests dried herbs and perhaps even little almond. Enjoy alone, with a good local vintage cheese or with some a homemade ragu and polenta. We may not be able to tour in the car right now but there is nothing to stop us taking a tour online, where we can join the club and get the good stuff delivered to our front door. Viva Italia at home.

This Day in History, 1856 TRANSPORT by road was such a problem in the early days of the gold rush that alternative methods were seriously considered. One of the most obvious was to use the waterways. The rain that turned the roads to mud made highways of the rivers. It was on this day in 1856 that the Wangaratta-based civil engineer, Francis Ryley, proposed the floating of a company to clear the Ovens River for navigation from Wangaratta to the junction with the Murray, and to build a landing stage for the unloading of cargoes from South Australia.

How stress can cause physical symptoms STRESS is often associated with low mood or bad tempers and irritability, but stress can cause physical symptoms in many people too. Have you ever felt like your heart is beating too fast or had chest pain, only to discover that there is nothing wrong when you have a heart check up? Do you experience a bloated and queasy tummy, even though every gut test says you are ďŹ ne? Are you constantly tired and feeling like your memory is somewhere else

- maybe with the keys you have misplaced? Most people I talk to tend to have a speciďŹ c ‘stress holding pattern’ which will dictate where their body chooses to store stress. Sometimes they don’t even know they are stressed, they just feel a little ‘off balance’. An interesting point to consider if you have experienced any of the above symptoms is that mood receptors are found in every organ of the body (with

the majority being found in the gut). This is why some people experience stress in their tummy, others hold onto stress in their muscles and some of us like to lock it away in our chest. Stress can also down regulate our immune systems making us more prone to infections, cold, bugs and low energy when we are under pressure. Learning about your own stress pattern and creating a plan so you can identify it early can be a great way to deal with your ‘unusual symptoms’.

“I’m one of three Red Cross bushďŹ re recovery officers in Victoria. “My role is to work with the ďŹ re-affected communities in the Alpine and Towong shires to help them as they begin the process of recovery.â€? Ms Davison said the position is about directly assisting individuals and local communities while also providing psychosocial ďŹ rst aid. “The prolonged ďŹ res, evacuations and the scale, speed and physical impact of the ďŹ res left many traumatised at a time when many also had to begin to deal with the loss of homes, livestock, and livelihoods,â€? she said. “By the end of March 2020 when I started in my role, Red Cross along with many local and state government and community agencies were focussed on meeting their immediate needs, then along came COVID-19.

“What struck me most was how well and quickly 20 or more government and community organisations worked to see how we could best assist the ďŹ re affected communities that were now having to also deal with the impact of coronavirus.â€? Ms Davison said since starting her role, she’s been moved by the many conversations she’s had with those affected. “I have talked to people who have been working incredibly long hours to rebuild and re-establish themselves,â€? she said. “I have heard from those who have had to confront a whole series of new challenges. “Damage from landslides in the Towong Shire following heavy rains, people trying to rid the persistent smell of stale smoke from houses, to many of those dealing with the emotional fallout from the event itself.â€?

Ms Davison said even though it was almost six months since the ďŹ res came through, the ongoing recovery process can be a difficult period for communities. “There are many things that can help during this time,â€? she said. “These include connecting (even virtually) with family and friends, reinstating routines for work, rest, mealtimes and exercise, spending time in nature and taking a bit of time to do something for yourself that you enjoy. “Other people I have spoken to have found that the delays they have experienced with rebuilding houses or re-establishing farms and impacted businesses, has given them time to think about how they can do things better this time around.â€? north east regional extra | August 19 - 25, 2020 THIS is part of a regular series featuring recipes that have become popular during the COVID-19 lockdown. This recipe comes from local resident Lena Louis. Lena shares her recipe for quick, simple and easy peanut butter cookies, which are gluten free and dairy free.

Peanut butter cookies THIS is a really easy recipe, and most people would have these ingredients in their pantries. It’s a good one if you’re on a budget. The salt sprinkled on the end really works well with these cookies. Peanut butter cookies Ingredients: 1 cup of peanut butter (smooth or crunchy, whatever you prefer) 1 cup of sugar 1 egg

Method: Mix your ingredients in a bowl and roll them into 12 equal size balls, (make sure you have a little bowl of warm water so the mixture doesn’t stick to your hands). Press them down with a fork and pop them in the oven at 160 degrees and bake until golden brown or for around 15 to 20 minutes. Once they come out of the oven, sprinkle the cookies with some salt and let them cool down before you eat them.

The origins of blacksmithing BLACKSMITHING origins first trace back to 1500 BC when the Hittites discovered the process of forging and tempering iron ore. When the Hittites were scattered in 1200 BC so was their knowledge and understanding of basic iron work. Launching into the Iron Age, a process to produce wrought iron was developed through reducing natural iron ore with heat. This new substance could be used to make simple tools that proved much tougher and sharper than stone. Even with developments in heating iron with the use of charcoal, ancient blacksmithing was quite unpredictable due to their lack of understanding the basic properties of iron. With inconsistencies in heating the iron and thus carbonisation of the iron, early craftsmen found they produced works that varied in quality. Most ancient iron work was either too soft to hold a sharp edge or it became extremely hard but brittle. However, the blacksmith would occasionally and unintentionally produce weapons and tools of steel. These weapons proved harder and tougher than others and because of their unique nature, they were thought to have magical or spiritual powers. Such weapons were named, handed down from generations, and carried an air of mysticism around them. The truth, however, was that these early smiths were stumbling into the science of what we now call metallurgy. Metallurgy is a domain of materials science and engineering that studies the physical and chemical behavior of metallic elements, their inter-metallic compounds, and their mixtures, which are called alloys. Metallurgy encompasses both the science and the technology of metals, and for centuries prior to the industrial revolution, blacksmiths were the pre-eminent fabricators and technologists, producing all manner of useful tools and weapons of war. The reason some blades made by early smiths were harder and sharper than others usually came down to the precise mixture of carbon in the iron that was forged.

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ FORGING AHEAD: The origins of Blacksmithing, just like many crafts and disciplines, was a combination of happy accidents and experimentation.

Perfecting this mixture would be a process that took place over centuries, and many different cultures. Interestingly, an early example of an alloy blade discovered belonged to none other than Egyptian Pharoah Tutankhamun, and the metal it was made of was not from Earth. It had, in fact, been forged from a meteor. After the discovery of King Tut’s dagger, researchers have found that virtually all iron goods produced during the Bronze Age were made from meteors - this is largely because the idea of extracting iron from the ground had not yet been conceived. Around 1800 BC, a people along the Black Sea called the Chalybes wanted to fabricate a metal stronger than bronze something that could be used to make unrivaled weapons. They put iron ores into hearths, hammered them, and fired them for softening. After repeating the process several times, the Chalybes pulled sturdy iron weapons from the forge. What the Chalybes made is called wrought iron, one of a couple major precursors to modern steel. Steel’s other younger sibling, so to speak, is cast iron, which was first made in ancient China. Beginning around 500 BC, Chinese metalworkers built seven-foot-tall fur-

naces to burn larger quantities of iron and wood. The material was smelted into a liquid and poured into carved molds, taking the shape of cooking tools and statues. Neither wrought nor cast iron was quite the perfect mixture, though. The Chalybes’ wrought iron contained only 0.8 percent carbon, so it did not have the tensile strength of steel. Chinese cast iron, with two to four percent carbon, was more brittle than steel. The smiths of the Black Sea eventually began to insert iron bars into piles of white-hot charcoal, which created steelcoated wrought iron. But a society in South Asia had a better idea. India would produce the first true steel. Around 400 BC, Indian metalworkers invented a smelting method that happened to bond the perfect amount of carbon to iron. The key was a clay receptacle for the molten metal - a crucible. The workers put small wrought iron bars and charcoal bits into the crucibles, then sealed the containers and inserted them into a furnace. When they raised the furnace temperature via air blasts from bellows, the wrought iron melted and absorbed the carbon in the charcoal. When the crucibles cooled, ingots of pure steel lay inside. And with that, carbon steel was born.
