Ready to Rockabilly
WITH its rounded bonnet, imposing size and curvy 1950s silhouette, Colin Smith’s 1953 Chevrolet Bel Air is an imposing piece of machinery. Originally shipped over from California and purchased by Colin from a seller in Queensland, the vehicle has a handsome bronze and cream exterior - and matching interior - and has drawn admiring glances from many in the time he has had it. “I just like the body style and all the chrome,” Colin said. “It’s an American car, and the Americans really know how to style cars.” A member of the Wangaratta Rod and Custom Club since its beginnings in 1977, Colin said he had owned a number of hot rods over the years, but his Chevy is his current pride and joy.

Glorious spring weather on the mountains DON’T FORGET to enjoy the sunny weather on local mountains as the snow season heads towards its end. Journey up to Falls Creek and check on the on mountain activities and attractions. At Mt Hotham, you can see the action of the Spring Club from September 22-23. The event is open to all ages and both skiers and snowboarders can compete. Action continues at Mt Buller, with the Pond Skim National Championships to draw a crowd this Saturday. The mountain is also hosting an auction of chairs from their iconic Blue Bullet chairlift ahead of the lift’s retirement at the end of the season, and this will also take place on Saturday, wih funds raised going to the MansďŹ eld Hospital Auxiliary. At Mt Buffalo, while snow cover is beginning to thin out, at the
time of going to press there was still snow cover for toboganning and other simple activities. Whatever mountain you’re visiting, keep an eye on snow cams and ski reports, or ask at your local ski hire business or tourism information centre to ďŹ nd out current snow levels, snow chain ďŹ tting advice, and weather at resorts around the area. with Helen van Riet AUSTRALIAN PLANTS SOCIETY (VIC) â—† BRIGHT: Phebalium stenophyllum.
A winner in green and gold THE genus Phebalium consists of 25 species, all but one being endemic to Australia with the majority occurring in the eastern half of the continent. Most are small shrubs with very aromatic foliage and producing clusters of small, star-like owers ranging from cream to bright yellow in Spring. Phebalium are classiďŹ ed in the family Rutaceae. Other better-known members of this plant family include boronia, eriostemon, philotheca, citrus [grapefruit, orange, lemon] and a new genus, leionema. All have ďŹ ve-petalled star-shaped owers. Phebalium species are locally common. The Alpine Phebalium [P. squamulosum] owers in early December in
woodlands and rocky areas below the tree line such as on Mt Buffalo and the Bogong High Plains. There’s a spectacular stand beside the road to the Lake Catani camp site. P. glandulosum [Desert Phebalium] can be occasionally found in desert areas of inland eastern Australia. It is classiďŹ ed as ‘endangered’ in Victoria. Most species are not available in retail nurseries, with the exception of P. squamulosum. Members of the Wangaratta Australian Plants Society grow lesser-known species by sharing of cutting material on propagation days. All are neat shrubs. They are tough and long-lived, reaching between 1 m and 1½ m x 1 m after ďŹ ve years or so. They are happy in half shade or full sun.
A closely related species is Leionema “Green Screenâ€? [ L. elatus X L. lamprophyllum]. It is ideal for a midsized hedge or single specimen. It copes well with shade, frost heat and dryness. It is fast-growing. It bears clusters of white starry owers in Spring, and the foliage is pleasantly aromatic. All Phebalium and Leionema owers are buttery-attracting. Phebalium and Leionema do not have common names. Like many of our great Aussie plants, these genera, like “geraniumâ€?, “daphneâ€? and “nasturtiumâ€? retain Latin names. But don’t let this put you off from planting one or more in your garden. You will be delighted with proliďŹ c clusters of dainty lemon or golden ower heads every Spring.

FEATURE STORY
Cushing’s Syndrome CUSHING’S Syndrome is a group of clinical signs created by the overproduction of cortisol in the body. Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands that is secreted to help animals react in stressful situations. However, chronic high levels of this hormone can have many negative effects on the body. Dogs that are suffering this condition tend to drink a lot of water and therefore urinate a lot. This is often the ďŹ rst sign that an owner will notice. There can subsequently be changes in body shape. Muscle loss and the development of a pot belly due to the redistribution of fat are classic signs that develop over time. Muscle weakness can be a problem as well. Dogs can also develop skin changes like thinning, roughness or the development of black pigmentation of the belly. The onset of this syndrome is insidious and dogs can live with the condition for many years despite it having negative impacts on their health. Diagnosis is based on blood
with Tim Craig BVSc, VETERINARIAN tests that assess the level of cortisol in the bloodstream before and after administration of stimulants or suppressants. Ultrasound of the adrenal glands can also be done to look for an adrenal gland tumour. If a deďŹ nitive diagnosis is made treatment should be considered. Medications are available that suppress the production of cortisol down to normal levels. If an adrenal gland tumour is the cause, surgical removal is usually necessary to correct the disease. With medical management, lifelong medications and monitoring are required to ensure the levels of cortisol remain normal and are not pushed too low or allowed to creep upwards again over time. If your dog has been drinking more water than usual an assessment by your vet for Cushing’s Syndrome (or other possible causes) is recommended.
VET CORNER THIS week’s pet of the week at Wangaratta RSPCA is Carmen, a black, female domestic shorthair cat who is two years old. To see more animals up for adoption at the Wangaratta RSPCA, visit the shelter in Connell Street or phone (03) 5722 2874.

“I’ve had an interest in hot rods since I was a young fella, he said, adding that while his current car needs little work done, he enjoys pottering around with his cars and doing small bits of maintenance when he can while relaxing in his shed, which he decorates to look like an old school mechanic’s garage. Colin’s Chevy is set to be among the many owned by Wangaratta Rod and Custom Club members at the club’s new event, Wangaratta Rockabilly Rock’n, set to take place next month. Colin said members of the club had decided to put the event together to create a drawcard with wide appeal for the community, and the marriage of older cars and rockabilly music and culture was a natural progression. “Rockabilly is part of the car scene, he said. Colin said that he loved being a part of the club’s tight knit, like minded community.

“It’s just a good feeling to be around all the old cars, and the people that are involved in the old cars, they’re all great people,â€? he said of the group. “It’s a fantastic lifestyle to be involved in,â€? he added, noting that club members are family orientated and community minded. Monica Smith (no relation), from Wodonga, is among those in the region looking forward to the event. A fan of rockabilly and vintage fashion, hair and makeup, she said she ďŹ rst got involved in rockabilly culture as a way to spend more time with her car enthusiast husband, Michael House, who has a 1954 Chevrolet Bel Air coupe. While she wears elements of vintage and rockabilly fashion regularly, she saves much of her dressing up for special occasions and festivals. “I just like the atmosphere,â€? she said of rockabilly events, “and it’s just really cool fashion. “It’s always good fun.â€?
Monica said that she also tries to support Australian small businesses when acquiring her rockabilly outďŹ ts. Wangaratta Rockabilly Rock’n will be held at Wangaratta Racecourse from 2pm on Saturday, October 13, featuring a show and shine, live music, entertainment for children, and a prize for best dressed rockabilly. Entry is $20 per head on the day ($15 per head if purchased before September 21) and those under 16 are admitted free if they are accompanied by an adult. Proceeds from the day will be donated to Northeast Health childrens ward. Broken Creek system worth a fish
A mate?

I am really hoping that the arrival of more stable and warmer weather will see the trout fishing improve as the insect life livens up. Now back to the great report. I know it is a fair way for many to drive, but the Broken Creek system is fishing very well. I have been fishing in between Katamatite and Numurkah at various locations on Broken Creek, Boosey Creek and Nine Mile Creek. Using worms as bait I have caught quite a few European carp which despite being a pest species, are still fun to catch. One trip with my daughter Holly
A neighbour?
delivered the goods. We managed to catch two magnificent yellowbelly in the Boosey Creek near Katamatite. I often practice catch and release when I am fishing however these yellowbelly are stocked into the Broken Creek system so bringing a couple home for a feed seemed like the right thing to do and let me assure you, they were the piscatorial equivalent of chocolate mousse…the best of the best. Be prepared to catch carp in the Broken Creek system, but if you’re really lucky you might just pick up a nice feed of yellowbelly.
9 3 LAST WEEK’S SOLUTION
AS the days get longer and the weather starts to warm up, albeit very slowly, more and more fishing options become available to us and this week I have a great report to share. But before I do that, let’s talk about the trout because September is a very popular month for trout anglers here in North East Victoria. Reports continue to be quite slow right across the board on the trout front with very few decent reports coming in. The general feeling is that the trout fishing is slow with isolated patches of good trout fishing found in both small streams and larger rivers.

WINE TALK
nemedia.com.au
FOOD TALK
Pizzini Wines 2017 Riesling JUST as the weather began to turn and the sun decided to make an appearance, so did the new season’s calves begin to arrive. It was somewhere around Father’s Day and the dad looked quite chuffed, watching over the fence as four arrived within hours of each other. It’s always a tense time as you hope for ďŹ ne weather, a smooth landing and that nature won’t throw you a curve ball. Thankfully among the ďŹ rst to arrive safely were those belonging to hand reared mums who despite being ‘stock’ still have a special place in your heart. So it was with some relief that we enjoyed chicken for dinner and opened a bottle of Pizzini Wines Riesling. The pale, gold tinged wine has a lovely and familiar oral bouquet which ring true to the
with Anita McPherson variety – vibrant with citrus blossom, apple and a touch of the tropics. The avour is fresh and zesty with the zing of lime and distinctive grapefruit. It was apparently grown on a north east facing slope leading down to the King River, so maybe it’s the river breeze which adds to its vibrancy. The wine is great foil for the richness of roast chicken breast and its salty skin. Now all we have to do is wait for the remaining calves to be born. When they do arrive, it will be a good reason to open another bottle. Visit the cellar door in the King Valley or go to www.pizzini.com.au.

This Day in History, 1868 ON September 19, 1868, the foundation stone was laid for a new brewery in Wangaratta. The brewery was to be built on a piece of William Clark’s land, overlooking the King River, and it was on this spot the crowd gathered, drawn by the music of Fife and Drum band, to see the chairman of the board and the landlord of the Royal Hotel, Henry Kett, lay the foundation stone.
Mushroom butter chicken kiev THIS recipe, which serves six, was created by Australian Mushrooms ambassador, chef and TV personality Miguel Maestre. Mushrooms are an easy and nutritious way to add avour to your favourite meals and more recipes like this can be found at www.australianmushrooms.com.au. Method In a small food processor, combine all of the mushroom butter ingredients and pulse until they combine into a smooth paste. This is your mushroom butter. Set aside on the bench until step 3. To make the kiev, slice the breast, lengthwise, in two equal sized halves. Using a smaller knife cut a little pocket sideways (trying to not cut through the chicken) as deep as you can into each half. In the pocket, place a large tbsp of the mushroom butter and atten with your hand trying to spread internally as much as possible. Keep the pocket closed using the butter as glue, then season the breast carefully with salt, pepper and paprika. Use the 1,2,3 breading tech-
nique: Plate one with 1 cup of our, plate two with 2 cups of panko and plate three with 3 eggs. Dredge the breast ďŹ rst in the our, shaking off any excess, then dip into the eggs. Drip any excess onto a plate and then dunk the breast into the breadcrumbs, squeezing the panko against the breast and making sure it is fully covered and perfectly coated. In a large frying pan, add enough light olive oil to shallow fry the chicken. Cook in separate batches three at a time, 3 mins per side till golden brown. Allow the chicken to rest on a paper towel for 2 minutes before serving. Serve with a white bean sautĂŠ if desired: SautĂŠ mushrooms and oil for 2-3 minutes. Add 1 tbsp of the mushroom butter. Add the lima and edamame beans, and sautĂŠ for a further minute. Add mustard, cream, 1 tbsp of lemon juice and chopped parsley Stir through until mixed, then serve with the chicken kiev on top.

TECH & SCIENCE
with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ TECHNO-AUTHORITARIANISM: China’s new social credit schemes aim to engineer the behaviour of it’s citizen’s by monitoring almost everything they do and assign an accordant social credit score.
Social credit systems - a tyranny of technology THE dystopian Black Mirror episode ‘Nosedive’ imagines a world in which every citizen is intrinsically linked to their social media accounts, and absolutely everything they do in life is rated on a scale of one to five by every person they encounter, and every person they associate with. Take a selfie in the gym, compliment a waiter who served you, or post a nice message on your social media feed that is designed to engender emotional warmth and positivity, and fellow users may deign to give you a high social score rating. Conversely, if you’re having a bad day and you are rude to someone, or you are spotted eating something unhealthy, or even if you’re just associated with the ‘wrong’ type of people, then your social score will suffer thanks to the judgment of others.
NEW ƉĂƟĞŶƚƐ ǁĞůĐŽŵĞ ŶƟ WRINKLE ŝŶũĞĐƟŽŶƐ
And this system doesn’t simply exist in a bubble, your social score affects every aspect of your life - from the loans you can apply for, to the area in which you can purchase a house. Through the course of the episode, the main character Lacie, a desperate social climber, meets an unfortunate fate as events transpire against her and she is left a social disgrace (at least according to the social credit system that governs the lives of all the characters), ultimately finding herself imprisoned with other ‘degenerates’. Sounds like an Orwellian nightmare, right? Only it isn’t a nightmare. For the citizens of the People’s Republic of China, this ‘social credit system’ is very real, and it’s even worse than the fever dreams of the Black Mirror writers. At least the system in ‘Nose-
dive’ was built around a ‘peer system’ where every member of the public rated everyone else - in a, let’s say, somewhat even handed manner that was marginally shielded from corruption and deceit. Alas, in China, their brand of social credit system, which authorities boast has already blacklisted seven million individuals as ‘untrustworthy’, is heavily intertwined with the Communist Party of China - the ruling government. Various local governments have been running pilot programs at provincial and city levels for some time. Private companies, meanwhile, have also been running parallel social credit schemes, most notably ‘Sesame Credit’ which has been developed by Ant Financial - a subsidiary of Alibaba, which owns one of the largest third-party payment methods used by Chinese citi-
zens for daily transactions. The social credit systems monitor the behaviour of citizens through a variety of technological means - from facial recognition in CCTV footage, to examination of bank records and credit history, to observing online activities and interactions, work history, phone records, consumer records and even friend and familial ties. Basically, you name it, and they are watching it. Big Brother eat your heart out. The systems are purportedly designed to engineer better individual behaviour by assigning China’s 1.4 billion citizens a score, thereby granting a mechanism by which to ‘award the trustworthy’ and ‘punish the disobedient’. And just what behaviour constitutes ‘trustworthiness’ or ‘disobedience’, you may ask? According to police in the

accomodation in star rated hotels, purchasing property, going on holiday, using public transport, and even enrolling their children in private schools (yes, the punishment is intergenerational). Undoubtedly, oppressive techno-authoritarianism on the scale of 1.4 billion individual scores is manifestly unworkable, but that is not stopping the Chinese government from forging ahead as it seeks to have a ‘fully operational Death Star’...I mean…’social credit system’ in place nationwide by 2020. Already, there are reports of false accusation and misinformation resulting in the punishment of innocents. For my part, I can’t imagine a worse abuse of technological advancement. Welcome to the Age of Information’s special brand of tyranny.
city of Suzhou, their top rated, (and thereby most trusted citizen) was awarded a score of 134 out of 200 after completing 500 hours of volunteer work and donating a litre of blood - admittedly quite virtuous acts. But it’s behaviour that constitutes ‘disobedience’ and its associated punishments that are of most pertinent concern. According to a lawyer in Beijing, Li Jingling, the pilot schemes had primarily been targeting two main groups; those who disobey court orders or fail to pay debts, and those who pose a threat to the Party’s rule - political dissidents, protestors, petitioners and their families. You knew that was coming, didn’t you? These purveyors of social disorder can expect to, and already have, suffered such punishment as being refused

A heightened version of WAG life CHANNEL CHAT
THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS:
SHOW: Playing for Keeps CHANNEL: WIN TIME: 8.30pm Wednesday
The Innocents (Netflix, streaming): Guy Pearce never disappoints; this supernatural love story about a shapeshifting teenager is his intriguing new vehicle. The Bureau of Magical Things (Eleven, 10.30am, Sunday): New Aussie kids series, from the creator of H2O: Just Add Water, about a girl who is thrust into a world of fairies, elves and spells.
with SIMONE KERWIN IT’S doubtful that the lifestyles of football WAGs (wives and girlfriends) are really as glamorous as we’re led to believe. Though their roles are often romanticised, we tend to forget that these women who project Instagram-worthy perfection in public are often no different to the rest of us. Of course, there are always those drawn to footy’s fame
and big dollars like moths to a flame, and new WIN series Playing for Keeps, which kicks off tonight, plays up the potential for a seedy Mean Girls-like underworld of WAG behaviour. With soapie stars Madeleine West and Olympia Valance, and Annie Maynard (recently seen in Upper Middle Bogan) in key roles, the series follows the path blazed by early 2000s show Footballers Wives, which
Schitt’s Creek (ABC Comedy, 9.10pm, Monday): When a wealthy couple find themselves broke, their only remaining asset is a town they once purchased as a joke. ◆ OFF-FIELD DRAMA: WAGs of the fictional Southern Jets AFL team are the focus of new WIN series Playing for Keeps.
centred on the female partners of fictional English soccer players. In Playing for Keeps, a young country girl (Cece Peters) relocates to the city after
her boyfriend is recruited by AFL club Southern Jets. She is a fish out of water in her new world, but is taught the ways of the WAG by the coach’s wife (West) and other
world-weary types, and also becomes privy to their secrets – which may include covering up a murder. Surprisingly for a sportsmad nation, series and films set around footy clubs have never been that successful
here - perhaps because the real thing always offers more drama. But this will be worth an initial look, if only as guilty pleasure viewing – and to realise how lucky we are not to be in the AFL fishbowl.
