By KYLIE WILSON WHEN most people think of Falls Creek, snowsports is what immediately comes to mind. But the mountain is not only active during the snow season – athletes of all persuasions and levels of skill use the mountain as a base to train at most times of the year, especially in the warmer months. Jo Prothero from Falls Creek Resort Management said that there has been a noticeable shift in recent years towards training at high altitude at local venues like Falls Creek over more expensive international options. “From Tour De France cyclists to Olympic runners and entire AFL teams, our resort is the training destination of choice for these athletes amongst the fittest and best in the world,” Jo said. “Each year we see a huge influx of athletes from amateur up to the ultra-elite, mostly from the end of our snow season through the start of summer. “Straight after the snow season finishes is usually one of our quieter times so it makes a big difference to our local stakeholders having regular visitors in athletes, their trainers and families.“ From world champions to high profile footballers such as the Collingwood and Geelong AFL teams, to local sportspeople and Olympians, the mountain often plays host to a diverse range of athletes.

Financial fitness resolutions GETTING financially fit should be at the top of the list of New Year’s resolutions, according to advice issued today by Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand. Here are their five foolproof tips to get financially fit and on the front foot: Improve your digital presence How long has it been since you’ve updated your website? Added to your LinkedIn profile? Engaged with followers on your business Facebook page? Published a new blog update? Creating a strong digital presence allows you to identify who your online audience is. And with any luck, convert this audience into clients! Having a solid online brand can also help you establish yourself as a subject-matter expert, share insight and expertise via social media, and generate exposure for you and your business. And what better way to kick off 2019 than giving your digital assets a fresh coat of paint. Implement cloud-based accounting technology Shifting your business to the cloud can often boost productivity and significantly trim down your administration time by managing workflow. Not all cloud-based technology services are the same; they may include hardware, software or some combination of the two. However, embracing the cloud will enable you to speed up both internal and external business processes, so that you

and your customers can make real-time decisions. Plan in advance for key financial deadlines Setting timely goals means giving yourself a realistic timeframe to achieve them. You can proactively break down the year into incremental milestones, with goals for each key financial deadline. This can help make your milestones more concrete, helping you create a sense of urgency to simply begin. Connect with colleagues – join a professional network Like any industry, if you want to stay relevant you need to keep up to date with the latest discussions and trends. Regardless of which professional network you join, by making the step to connect with like-minded individuals, you are guaranteed to expand your current professional footprint. Put yourself first - Invest in your professional development Too often gaining that new skill, course, or qualification is the thing you put on the backburner, but take that time to expand your capabilities and broaden your scope.

with Mandi McDonald GARDENING SPECIALIST ◆ EASY FIX: Roll up your used newspapers to create a trap for earwigs so that you can get them away from your plants.

Eradicating earwigs WELL, the rain last week was certainly welcome. Our gardens will benefit from a good soaking to help them get through summer. The rain seems to give the plants so much more than we can achieve with watering. Earwigs seem to be a big problem in the garden at the moment, coming out at night and munching their way though our vegetable patch then hiding away during the heat of the day. They can be a little tricky to eradicate but here are a few tips to help reduce numbers. If you prefer to use organic methods, there a few ways to tempt the earwigs away from your plants. Roll up newspaper and place it near plants that have been chewed.

This gives the earwigs a place to hide. Check the paper each morning and shake any earwigs into a bucket of soapy water. You can also use egg cartons in a similar way. Use two bottoms and stack them together. Earwigs love to hide in this - again you need to check regularly and shake the earwigs into a bucket of soapy water. Another less labour intensive method requires a shallow plastic container with a lid - the ones Chinese food comes in are perfect for this job - a little olive or vegetable oil and some soy sauce. Half fill the container with oil, add in a dash of soy sauce and put the lid on.

No job too big or small. We can handle it. Get

Make one or two small holes in the lid and place near effected plants. Make sure you place the container in shallow hole so the top is level with the ground. Check and refresh about once a week. For chemical control there are two products registered for use in the home garden on edibles, pyrethrum and spinosad. If you use either of these follow label instructions and adhere to withholding periods. You will probably not eradicate earwigs completely from your garden, but by using any of these methods you can certainly reduce numbers and ensure you enjoy vegetables and flowers not covered in holes. Happy gardening.

FEATURE STORY

Asthma in cats ALTHOUGH not overly common, some cats can develop asthma. Asthma in cats is an acute or chronic airway inflammation usually triggered by allergens. Inhaling allergens causes inflammation which then triggers constriction of airways, causing the cat to show symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, laboured breathing and wheezing. Symptoms can be chronic or episodic. Some common irritants that can cause asthma in cats are exposure to cigarette smoke, dusty cat litter, hair sprays and air fresheners. Outside cats may react to pollens, air pollution and dust.

with Dr A Kelleher, VETERINARIAN If your cat shows any symptoms of asthma a visit to the Vet will help to diagnose the condition. If necessary, blood tests can be performed to rule out other diseases and chest Xrays may be required. Treatment for asthma often commences with oral or injectable cortisone, however if long term treatment for asthma is required, training your cat to inhale asthma preventative medication through a spacer can be an effective way to treat the condition.

One such person is mixed martial arts (MMA) athlete Rob Whittaker, currently the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight champion – who will defend his title at a bout in February next year. He and his MMA teammates from the Gracie Smeaton Grange gym spent time training on the mountain last year, and Rob’s high performance manager, Fabricio Itte, said that it was a positive experience for all involved. “I think the team enjoyed the time there,” he said. “It’s a beautiful area, a beautiful part of the world.” Fabricio said Rob and those who trained on the mountain got a lot out of the high altitude training, which including running, a mountain bike tour, and

more, and they are hoping to return to train more there in the future. Among those who regularly take advantage of high altitude training on the mountain is the Melbourne Track Club. Head coach Nic Bideau regularly oversees club training events on the mountain, including for the club’s younger members. He also regularly trained there himself as a young runner in the early 1980s. He said the regime for those training there including running twice a day – except Sunday – covering around 160km a week, as well as gym visits three times a week. Nic said that he found Falls Creek to be a peaceful and effective training environment, saying club members “can rest and recover from training in a peaceful, serene environment.”

“The altitude helps multiply red blood cells needed for better endurance,” he explained. “The rugged trails improve strength and rhythm. “It’s a great place for cycling long distances for athletes that are injured. “We like that it’s far from other towns.” Rob said the group, which has trained many world class athletes over the years, found high altitude training to be a valuable tool. “We bring younger athletes into the group, and they learn the standards that have been repeated up there for 20 years now,” he said. “Standards and commitment to excellence in the environment there – with few distractions – gives us an edge.”

Plenty of festive fishing tional right across the region. No doubt the rain will slow things down in a few areas for a little while. Try the Broken River, Kiewa River, King River, Buffalo River and Mitta Mitta River. The Murray River and Lake Mulwala should also fish well. The Ovens River from Everton downstream could be hit and miss. As I type, the water has receded substantially in Wangaratta but is still very dirty. How long it will take to clear is anybody’s guess. I cannot guarantee that it will be clear in time, but it might be. The Ovens River was affected the most by last week’s storm in the Tarrawingee/Everton area. fishing for redfin over the festive season. Lakes William Hovell and Buffalo could go either way. They both usually start producing a few redfin about Christmas time however it is not until February or March that they fish their best. Yellowbelly Lake Hume and Lake Nillahcootie are both great places to target yellowbelly. Lake Eildon has also been producing quite a few yellowbelly recently as well. LAST WEEK’S SOLUTION

G’DAY everyone. This is my last fishing report for 2018, and I look forward to returning with more weekly fishing reports from early January 2019. Over the festive season: Trout Downrigging at Lake Dartmouth. The Mitta Mitta River upstream of Eskdale, King River upstream of Lake William Hovell, Ovens River upstream of Bright and the Buckland River will likely be the best places to head. Don’t expect red hot fishing. With warmer summer water temperatures and an increase in anglers the trout may become very wary quite quickly. Murray Cod Before last week’s epic rainfall, the Murray cod fishing was sensa-

Christmas - the crazy time EVERY year we hear and say the same thing: “ I am too busy to do...‌.â€? Why do we put so much pressure on one month of the year? 81 per cent of jobseekers adapt their CV for algorithm screening FOUR in five jobseekers have or plan to adapt their CV and online profiles for initial screening by an algorithm, according to recruiting experts Hays. In an online poll of over 6000 people conducted by the recruiter, 27 per cent indicated they have already adapted their CV and online profiles. Another 54 per cent plan to do so in the coming 12 months. Just 19 per cent have no plans to adapt. “Artificial intelligence (AI) and automated machine learning algorithms are being utilised in every industry, including recruitment, says Nick Deligiannis, managing director of Hays in Australia and New Zealand. “Typically, it is time consuming and repetitive tasks that are being automated. In the case of recruitment, one job ad can elicit hundreds, sometimes thousands, of responses. “Many of these may be inappropriate but all must be screened in order to identify the suitable candidates. “If a recruiter does not advertise, they’ll instead use digital technology and data science to examine large amounts of data to find the most suitable people for a job. “With the aid of AI and algorithms, such time consuming processes now take seconds, allowing recruiters and hiring managers to provide a more personal service and engage with skilled and experienced professionals. So how can you ensure your application makes it past the algorithms and reaches a shortlist? 1. Add keywords: Pepper your CV and online profile with keywords relevant to the

job/s you apply for. If you aren’t sure of suitable keywords, look at job descriptions for your ideal role. Don’t forget keywords for the required soft skills, too. 2. Describe achievements: Use these keywords throughout your CV and online profile to describe your achievements. For example, “I used my communication skills to liaise with colleagues in other departments, then applied my analytical nous to develop business case proposals and tenders accordingly. Make sure you link keywords with proof that you did your previous jobs well. A simple trick is to combine an action verb with a keyword. For example, instead of writing that you “always achieved your target goals, try “I surpassed target goals by 20 per cent in quarter 1 and 18 per cent year-on-year. 3. Use an accepted CV format: Ensure your CV is in the accepted format as an alternative style might not contain the content AI recognises, meaning your application could fail to make the shortlist. 4. Utilise LinkedIn: Create a strong LinkedIn profile. Many people leave the summary field blank, but you should use the full character count to highlight your successes, skills and value. Of course, use appropriate keywords here, too. 5. Avoid unusual job titles: Even if your official job title is a little unconventional, use an industry-standard title in your CV and online profile so it will be recognised by an algorithm. 6. Don’t job-hop: Unless you are a temporary worker, do not change jobs frequently. Hiring managers do value stability and turnover can be factored into the criteria AI screens for.

â—† HI-TECH: AI and algorithms are increasingly being used in job application screening.

TECH & SCIENCE

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ MOSS PIGLET: Tardigrades are one of the hardiest creatures on Earth, and can even survive in the vaccuum space for up to 10 days.

Tardigrades - Earth’s mightiest cute little creature IF our planet ever suffers a world ending cataclysm, chances are one of my favourite animals will survive it. Ever since I first read about tardigrades, I’ve been fascinated by them, and I was very happy to see them featured in one of the more recent Marvel movies - ‘Ant Man and the Wasp’ starring Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly and Michael Douglas. This week I thought I’d take a look at tardigrades and what makes them so special - and perhaps generate a few more fans for these terrific ‘Water Bears’, as they are colloquially known. What do tardigrades look like? Tardigrades are nearly translucent and they average about half a millimetre (500 micrometers) in length, about the size of the period at the end of this sentence. In the right light

you can actually see them with the naked eye. But researchers who work with tardigrades see them as they appear through a dissecting microscope of 20- to 30-power magnification. Tardigrades have five body sections, a well-defined head and four body segments, each of which has a pair of legs fitted with claws. The claws vary in different species from familiarly bearlike to strangely medieval fistfuls of hooked weaponry. The hindmost legs are attached backwards, in a configuration unlike that of any other animal. These legs are used for grasping and slow-motion acrobatics rather than for walking. Tardigrades have been around a very long time “Old” doesn’t really begin to cover it.

Scientists estimate that tardigrades have been around for 600 million years. To put that in perspective: Dinosaurs first appeared about 230 million years ago, which makes T Rex and friends the new kids on the block. They can live pretty much anywhere True to their nicknames, most tardigrades prefer living in the water or on damp places on land in the world’s temperate zones. Dirt, leaf litter, and patches of moss are favourite hangouts. But those are just the tardigrade’s preferred habitat; these tiny animals could easily live in the fires of Mount Doom if they had to. They may be little, but they’re darn near unkillable. They’ve got a superpower What makes tardigrades so tough?

One word: cryptobiosis. Translated literally, cryptobiosis means “hidden life,” and that’s exactly what it is: a form of suspended animation in which organisms can go on living even as they look dead. Cryptobiosis is the secret to Sea Monkeys; it’s also the reason tardigrades can survive pretty much anything. So when times get tough, tardigrades play dead. Tardigrades are primarily aquatic creatures and require a thin layer of water to do pretty much anything, including eating, reproducing, or moving around. Without water, they’re about as lively as a beached dolphin. When they find themselves in a location without water, they hunch up into little dried husks and more or less shut down, losing all but around three percent of their body’s water and slowing their metabolism down

to an astonishing 0.01 percent of their normal speed. In this state, the tardigrade just persists, doing nothing, until it’s inundated with water again. When that happens, the creature pops back to life like a re-wetted sponge and continues onward as if nothing had happened. They don’t fuss about the air conditioning Tardigrades can withstand temperatures that would easily fry or freeze a human being. Scientists have exposed them to heat over 148°C and cold below 1° Kelvin - or -278°C - a temperature at which most substances go bananas. Liquids turn to solids and gases turn to liquids, but the hardy tardigrade just keeps on truckin’. They can even live in the vacuum of space Without the aid of a pres-

surized suit, humans can survive just a few minutes in the vacuum of space. Tardigrades can make it for 10 days. In 2007, scientists discovered that these microscopic critters can survive an extended stay in the cold, irradiated vacuum of outer space. A European team of researchers sent a group of living tardigrades to orbit the earth on the outside of a FOTON-M3 rocket for ten days. When the water bears returned to Earth, the scientists discovered that 68 percent lived through the ordeal. But the hazards of space go beyond mere skull-crushing pressure; there’s also UV radiation. Humans can withstand about 500 roentgens, or units, of ionizing radiation, but it takes more than 100 times that much to kill a tardigrade.

New era for groundbreaking character CHANNEL CHAT

THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS:

SHOW: Murphy Brown CHANEL: 10 TIME: Monday, 8.30pm

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (Netflix, streaming) I’m never too old to enjoy a good cartoon, and this fun reboot of one of my childhood favourites is thoroughly enjoyable. Schitt’s Creek (ABC Comedy/iView or Netflix) This quirky sitcom about a rich family losing everything and having to move to a small town really grows on you.

with Kylie Wilson WHILE I was not quite old enough during its original run to truly appreciate the complicated and headstrong feminist character of journalist Murphy Brown (Candice Bergen), I always found it enjoyable to watch. During its original run, it did a lot to break down societal stigmas and bring controversial issues to light, particularly when Murphy became a sin-

gle mother to son Avery and became the target of moral outrage from the US vice president of the time, Dan Quayle. And the rise of Trump and the phrase “fake news” makes it as good a time as ever to bring the character back. In the reboot, Murphy emerges from retirement eager to be a voice for facts and reason in a 24 hour, social media drenched news cycle,

Doctor Who (currently ABC iView) While there will be no new episodes for some time (bar the special that will air in the New Year), I have been thoroughly enjoying the adventures of the Thirteenth Doctor, and you can relive the most recent episodes on iView.

◆ ANCHOR: Candice Bergen reprises her popular character Murphy Brown in the era of “fake news”, in the recently rebooted sitcom of the same name.

joined by her old team members, lifestyle reporter Corky Sherwood (Faith Ford), investigative journalist Frank Fontana (Joe Regalbuto) and her former news producer Miles Silverberg (Grant Shaud). While trying to get her new show up and running, she is

also dealing with the fact Avery (Jake McDorman), who has also become a journalist and works as the “token liberal” at a conservative rival network, has been given a new show in the same timeslot. Dealing with everything from ageism to Twitter wars –

it doesn’t take long for social media newbie Murphy to start a Twitter feud with Donald Trump – it also examines the role journalists should play in a rapidly evolving media landscape. The show is not afraid to

take aim at the current White House, and while the comedy is sometimes a little heavy handed – including one weird but mildly amusing high profile cameo in the first episode – it is a fun watch for nostalgic and new viewers alike.
