◆ COLOURFUL LIFE: Greg Miles with some of his work at his Wangaratta home. PHOTOS: KYLIE WILSON
By KYLIE WILSON
Watercolour memories
HIS life and career have taken him all across Australia, but the place Greg Miles feels most at home is in his Wangaratta home, creating rich rural landscapes armed with just imagination, ink and watercolour paints. Now, as he approaches his 80th birthday, he is looking back on a life well lived and wants to showcase the fruits of his creative endeavours. “It all comes from the back of my head,” Greg – who grew up in the Mallee and Wimmera - said of his work, adding that his paintings reflect his “love of the Australian landscape, and the way the Aussie character has cluttered it with trucks and tractors, sheds, windmills and tankstands”. “It makes the bush and the country quite unique,” he said. “I’ve spent my life enjoying the outdoors and the bush. “I just paint what I love. “I’ve got lots of ideas in my head.” A self-taught painter, Greg said he has been painting in earnest for about a decade, but he was first influenced in his artistic endeavours by seeing the works of the sons of Albert Namatjira while working as a teacher with Indigenous children in the Northern Territory in the 1960s. He added that he was most influenced by their blending of colours, and followed their work with great interest.

Making new plants from old MY mother was very fond of African violets. She taught me how to make new plants by taking leaf cuttings from favourite colour forms and setting them in a propagating mix of sharp sand. Over time, tiny new plants grew at the base of the leaf cuttings. Mother potted them on and shared her new ‘babies’ with me and gardener friends. Years later, I was reminded of mother’s African violets. A friend demonstrated how to make multiple Grass Trigger Plants [Stylidium graminifolium] from leaf cuttings from a single ‘parent’ plant. This technique does not work for most species, but it certainly works for Goodeniaceae. Members of the Goodeniaceae family include Scaevola [fan flowers],
Lechenaultia, Dampiera and Goodenia species. Goodenia spp. occur naturally throughout Australia. There are over 170 Australian species. Once you have your ‘eye in’, bright yellow Goodenia flowers can often be spotted along roadsides, in bushland, in old cemeteries, in national parks, above the high water mark of farm dams, in dryland and in high rainfall areas. There are Goodenias from tropical NT to cold southern Tasmania. These are true survivors. Each has evolved and adapted over eons of time to changing climatic conditions. Unfortunately, not many varieties are currently available commercially, but those that are make great garden subjects. Research and development for varieties suitable for garden planting is ongoing.

I decided to try my hand at growing Goodenias from leaf cuttings. Last October I took a dozen or so leaf cuttings, dipped each leaf stem tip in ‘Clonex’ gel and set each leaf at an angle in a propagation medium [90 per cent perlite and 10 per cent peat moss]. Roots formed with weeks. About a month later, tiny rosettes of leaves grew into new plants at the base of each leaf cutting. Three months on, I have at least 12 strongly rooted plants ready for transplanting. Perhaps you already grow Leschenaultias, Scaevolas or Goodenias. Are you, like me, curious to discover some amazing regenerative abilities of our native plants? I encourage you to try your hand at growing some new babies with this ‘leaf-cutting technique’.

gap in financial comfort that had been widening.” The financial comfort of renters, while still significantly lower than other tenures, was up 8 per cent to 4.78 out of 10, its highest in four years, reflecting improving rent conditions, while the overall financial comfort of households who own a home mortgagefree fell 3 per cent to 6.27 out of 10, its lowest point since the survey began. The gap in financial comfort between high and average and lower income households also closed, with the overall financial comfort of those earning over $200,000 pa falling sharply by 6 per cent to 6.79, while those earning $75,000$100,000 pa reported their overall financial comfort had increased by 7 per cent to 5.87 and to a lesser extent those under $40,000 pa (up 2 per cent to 4.52). Overall financial comfort up despite asset price falls In the six months to December 2018, the Report’s overall Household Financial Comfort Index increased by 2 per cent to 5.56 out of 10 – higher than the past five surveys and above the historical average of 5.45 out of 10 since the survey began in October 2011. A key factor driving the rise was income gains with a continued strengthening in labour market conditions increasingly flowing through to bigger pay packets.

ACCORDING to a recent report by ME Bank, Australia’s financial comfort gap has narrowed for the first time in seven years, with most households feeling better about their finances despite significant falls in residential property and share markets. Income gains, easing living costs, increased cash savings and reduced overspending were key drivers in households’ rising financial comfort, but belt tightening could be a bellwether for slowing economic growth. In the seven years ME has conducted the bi-annual survey, the financial comfort between property owners has diverged from renters. This is the first survey they have seen the comfort between these cohorts closing. Consulting Economist for ME, Jeff Oughton, said “The comfort gap between property owners and renters, as well as between very high income earners and other income brackets, has narrowed. “We’ve seen a correction for wealthier, older propertyowning Australians who’ve been riding the hot property and bull share markets for much of the past seven years, while middle and lower-income households have begun to benefit from an easing in living cost pressures and income gains. “Together the changes have helped to narrow the big

FEATURE STORY
That irritating itch IT’S normal for a dog to itch now and then, but are you finding your pooch is obsessively licking, biting or scratching? Unfortunately, you’re not alone. Itchy skin is one of the most common presentations for a veterinarian, and owners are often surprised to find out that it’s more than just fleas that can cause discomfort in our furry friends. There are three broad reasons for itchy skin; parasites (fleas, mites, ticks), infections (bacterial, fungal) and allergies (food allergies, environmental allergies). Determining the cause of the itch can be quite difficult for your veterinarian, as often there are multiple factors at play. Location and appearance of lesions can be indicative of certain causes. The most commonly affected sites include ears, paws, tail base and belly, with presentations ranging from mild reddening to hair loss, thickened skin, crusting and infected lesions. Your veterinarian can perform a number of tests such as cytology (examination of samples under the microscope) in order to iden-
with Amy Brown VETERINARIAN tify causes such as parasitic and bacterial infections. Sometimes a biopsy of the skin may be taken for further investigation. Identifying allergies can be tricky, but may involve things like dietary trials and testing various allergy reactions on the skin. Often it can be difficult to identify the exact type of allergen, and in these cases you veterinarian may trial anti itch medication to ensure you pooch remains comfortable. For mildly itching dogs, there are several at home remedies that may help them feel more comfortable including bathing in a sensitive or medicated shampoo, feeding low sensitivity diets or adding fish based products to the diet to increase the natural skin barrier. It is important to remember not to wash your pooch too frequently, as this can impair skin function. If you’re concerned your dog is itching more than normal, contact your veterinarian today.

◆ BEAUTIFUL BLEND: One of Greg Miles’ distinctive paintings.
Watercolour memories Ŷ
Continued from page 1
Later on, he was also influenced by the painters of the Heidelberg School, such as Conder, Streeton and McCubbin, described by many as the first Australian impressionists. Following his work in the Northern Territory, he worked on a master’s degree and a doctorate in philosophy, specialising in the philosophy of education. His colourful career has also seen him work as a school principal in Victoria, as well as taking up the “challenging” role of heading up Lifeline in Queensland. Greg said he loved taking up the different challenges that were available to him during his career. “In teaching, you’re a bit of an authority...in this field [at Lifeline], you’re more interested in what people are thinking and feeling,” he said.
praised the richness and diversity of the arts scene in the region, particularly in Wangaratta and Benalla, and said he was a regular at many local exhibitions. “It’s a nice town to be in if you’re interested in art,” he said of Wangaratta. His care and attention do not stop at the paintings, however – he frames each piece with secondhand frames he has purchased from a nearby Salvation Army op shop, which he takes care to refurbish, varnish or even paint to match the painting. Greg will be exhibiting many of his paintings, some of which have been painted in the past three years, in the Bainz Gallery at Wangaratta Library in Docker Street, Wangaratta for the entire month of March. More information on his work is available by contacting him directly on 0427 362125.
While he depicts distinctly Australian bushland in his work, Greg said his paintings do not portray any particular place, but instead are painted from imagination and are often a composite of different places that he has been to. His painting style sees him first draw outlines in a fine ink, before using his watercolours to bring out the richness of the image he is trying to convey. When asked about his preference for watercolours, Greg said he enjoyed working with them because of the challenge of getting the painting and colour blends right the first time, and also because of the “delicate” finish it gives a work of art. “You’ve just got to get it right on the first sweep of the brush,” Greg said. “It’s subtle.” Now retired and a resident of the North East for the past five years, Greg

ing pick back up across North East Victoria. I have been out cod fishing several times over the last week and on every trip I have found the best success at and after sunset using surface lures. Hard body divers and spinnerbaits have been picking up the odd cod, but for the most part all of the excitement has come when switching up to a surface lure. Due to the cool weather last week, I was able to deceitfully convince a few trout to take my artificial dry fly in a tributary of the King River. The trout that I found the week be-
fore that were really slow had started feeding a bit more freely as the water temperatures has dropped. Just dipping my feet into the water was enough for me to realise just how much the water had cooled. My trout were caught on a Royal Stimulator fly in the middle of the day. Finally, I have had a few great reports of yellowbelly being caught in Lake Nillahcootie this week. My dad and his neighbour caught around 30 or so fish one morning last week, all on freshwater shrimp – and all but one of the yellowbelly were undersize and released.

LAST WEEK’S SOLUTION
THE weather gods and the fishing gods have joined forces to bring us some much needed reprieve this week. Not only has the weather improved, but the water temperatures have dropped a bit as well which has had a positive effect on the region’s fishing. The rivers have slowly started returning to that beautiful green colour that they are best recognised for as the cooler weather has led to less gum leaves dropping into the water and most likely a rise in dissolved oxygen. This has seen the Murray cod fish-

Easy food prep and the weekly write off a handy family routine EVERY family has at least one night a week that is a write off. I’m not talking about unexpected pear shaped days, but booked in, known evenings that just disappear. For me this is Thursday. I work a late shift at the clinic and arrive home feeling tired and wired, to kids who are a bit tired and wired and launch straight into the post dinner – bath-bed routine. The kids are always a bit late to bed and nine o’clock comes around really quickly. I find I need to potter in the quiet listing to a podcast, music or in silence for an hour or so once the house is resting. In the past most of this time was spent getting day care bags and lunches ready for the next day. This year I don’t need to prep daycare snacks so I’m going to spend the

time setting up our family wholefoods for the week. I enjoy cooking and food prep and it’s an easy pottering way to unclutter my mind, (as long as I have space and quiet to work in). When I was studying naturopathy my share house bench was always a clutter of jars and bowls. Grains soaking, beans and legumes sprouting, tamari seeds in jars, chai water ready on the bench for the morning. In the last few years these practices have become haphazard as I reached for the convenience of tinned beans and didn’t bother to soak grains, pasta dinners are on weekly rotation. We eat well and I’m not worried about it. But I do I love to potter in the kitchen, being creative and innovative and having some time back is like an excit-
ing little bonus to my week. So here is a picture of one hour of kitchen pottering: · LSA ready to whizz · Tamari seeds for quick salty bursts of flavor on toast, vegies or salads · Toasted muesli with buckwheat seeds coconut and oats · Chai water (1 tsp soaked in water overnight and drunk on waking) · Beans soaking to be cooked with mince for taco night and paella. Recipes on website: nenaturalhealthcentre.com/recipes These are all so simple and take little thought or effort, but make the rest of the week run smoother and the weekend tastier and help manage the cravings of salt and sweet that our tired wired post work/day care bodies desperately want.

Rutherglen Estates 2016 Shiraz THE mere mention of the word chilli can make some people break out in a sweat before they’ve even got close to tasting a dish. I’m not sure whether it’s the fear of the heat, the belief it will upset the belly or simply disliking the taste sensation it brings, but it’s probably a combination of them all, or simply a bad experience. Unless you’re competing in some crummy reality television show, eating chilli should never be about how hot you can take it but about balance, appreciating the fruit for its variety of avours, textures and complexities. Using different chilli’s on a pepperoni pizza can add subtle capsicumlike crunch, smoky warmth or peppery kick, but whichever way you choose to go it’s awesome with a glass of Rutherglen Estates Shiraz.

This Shiraz has an intense crimson colour and a punchy aroma of wild fruit and peppery spice. The fruit was specially selected from the lowest yielding vines in the vineyard and the avour is generous and fruity with blackberry and plum. The oaky spice gently enhances rather than overpowers the delicious fruit – which stays with you long after the glass is ďŹ nished. It’s great with salami, but would also suit any kind of roast meats or a beefy barbecue. It’s an example of what balance is all about. Try it - and you might just be blown away (but in a good way).

◆ CHECK OUT MY SCHNOZ: It may seem hard to believe, but male proboscis monkeys use their fleshy, pendulous noses to attract mates.
with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au
The fantastic species you can find in Borneo FOR the last couple of weeks I’ve been overseas, visiting family in Sabah, Borneo. I had an absolutely wonderful time experiencing the rich culture of the people there (along with a veritable mountain of food), and I had the privilege of seeing many native species of plants and animals up close. This week, I thought I’d share some fun facts about just a few of those species. Proboscis Monkey The proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus) is one of the most unusual looking monkeys in the world. This reddish-orange monkey is named after its huge pendulous nose. It is also called monyet belanda (Dutch monkey) or orang belanda (Dutchman) in Malay / Indonesian as local people thought this red faced, big nosed, pot bellied monkey resembled the Dutch colonists. The proboscis monkey is only found
on the island of Borneo in South East Asia. It is present in all of the countries that make up Borneo, namely Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia. The proboscis monkey has an orange-brown coat with grey arms, legs and tail. The male is one of the largest monkeys in Asia and typically weighs 16-22 kg but can weigh as much as 30 kg. Females are smaller and typically weigh 7-12 kg. The male has a head to body length of 65-75 cm with females slightly smaller at 55-65 cm. The proboscis monkey’s large nose develops with age. Females have smaller noses whilst the male’s nose can be up to 18 cm in length. Both male and females have large stomachs which look like pot bellies. Orangutan In Malay and Indonesian orang
means “person” and utan is derived from hutan, which means “forest.” Thus, orangutan literally means “person of the forest”. Orangutans’ arms stretch out longer than their bodies - over two metres from fingertip to fingertip - and are used to employ a “hookgrip”. When on the ground, they walk on all fours, using their palms or their fists. When male orangutans reach maturity, they develop large cheek pads, which female orangutans apparently find attractive. When males are fighting, they charge at each other and break branches. If that doesn’t scare one of them away, they grapple and bite each other. For the first four to six years of his/ her life, an infant orangutan holds tight to his/her mother’s body as she moves through the forest in search of fruit. Like humans, orangutans have opposable thumbs. Their big toes are also opposable.
Orangutans have tremendous strength, which enables them to swing from branch to branch and hang upside-down from branches for long periods of time to retrieve fruit and eat young leaves. Rafflesia (Corpse flower) Rafflesia may sound rare to some, but not to the locals of South East Asia. This largest known individual flower of the Earth is found only in Malaysia, Sumatra, Java and Kalimantan of Indonesia, southern Thailand, and southern Philippines. Rafflesia is a parasitic plant without any leaves and hardly any stem. It is just a huge, leathery and speckled five-petaled flower. It smells like a rotting meat, making it known locally as “corpse flower”. The Sun Bear The reclusive sun bear, smallest member of the bear family, lives an insular life in the dense lowland forests of South East Asia.
Found from southern China to eastern India and as far south as Indonesia, sun bears, also called Malayan sun bears, take their name from the bibshaped golden or white patch on their chest, which legend says represents the rising sun. They have a stocky, muscular build, small ears, and a short muzzle, which has earned them the nickname “dog bear”. Their sleek, black coat is short to avoid overheating in the tropical weather but thick and coarse to provide protection from twigs, branches, and rain. Sun bears grow to only about half the size of an American black bear. Males, slightly larger than females, are about five feet in length and weigh up to 150 pounds, a stature which suits their arboreal lifestyle and allows them to move easily through the trees. They have even been observed making sleeping platforms high above the ground out of branches and leaves.
LADIES DAY

THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS:
SHOW: Ms Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries CHANNEL: Seven TIME: Thursday, 8.30pm
Mrs Wilson (Sunday, 9.40pm, ABC) The third and final episode of this true life 1960s spy thriller about a bigamist secret agent with the main character, the spy’s widow, played by her actual granddaughter. Truth is stranger than fiction. Hard Quiz (Wednesday, 8pm, ABC) Still the most consistent laugh machine on air.
with Shane Douthie FOR the many fans of the Phryne Fisher detective series on the ABC, the long wait is over for a ‘sequel’ with Ms Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries to begin this Thursday on Seven. Set in the Swinging Sixties, the promotional blurb included the dreadful tagline “groovy baby” but we can only hope the end production has slightly more maturity in its content. Ms Fisher is the “gorgeously
reckless” Peregrine Fisher, niece of the equally gorgeous and reckless Phryne who has gone missing on a plane flight into the highlands of Papua New Guinea. Typical. Geraldine Hakewill, who was an instant hit in the series Wanted, is perfectly cast and very much destined for bigger things on the small and large screen. Now she seems to be channelling Audrey Hepburn with
Rosehaven (Wednesday, 8.30pm, ABC) Relief from all the over-hyped reality tv led by the never ending My Kitchen Rules. Did we really need another group to come in? Enough is enough. ◆ IN PHRYNE’S FOOTSTEPS: Geraldine Hakewill as the adventuress Peregrine Fisher.
a little Mrs Peel from The (real) Avengers thrown in. Peregrine follows in her aunt’s footsteps, becomes a fearless investigator, supported by a coterie of remarkable women, members of The Adventuresses’ Club, reflecting very much
the current positive message of powerful, independent women. This support group includes Birdie (Catherine McClements), the ‘M’ of The Adventuresses’ Club, described as sexy, aspirational and a shrewd strategist and an ex-member of
WW2 Special Forces. Peregrine’s co-protagonist is Detective James Steed (another salute to The Avengers’ John Steed?), “a competent detective in the midst of a lazy police force”, he seems likely to become the unrequited love
of the series as well as the allimportant conduit to crime. A strong cast, infinite plot possibilities and ‘fab’ costumes and classic cars, the potential is enormous for this period detective piece but don’t expect too many challenging twists.
