FROM small beginnings as a toddler in a dance studio in Myrtleford, Zoe Cavedon has made a splash in the dance industry across the world. She began learning dance at the age of three and said she was always quite an athletic child, embracing the extreme physicality required to be a dancer. “I remember feeling the excitement preparing for performances and knowing that my family and community would be watching,” she said. “Meaningful friendships were formed through sharing the stage with dancers from all over the North East, which I still have to this day. “As I matured, the love for athleticism evolved into a passion of being able to express emotion through movement. “I feel the most present and in the moment when I am dancing.” At 10, she began training with Tim Podesta in Wodonga (now artistic director at Projection Dance Company), and her dance career has grown exponentially from there. “I was exposed to the arts and dance industry, which sparked my ambition to pursue dance professionally through his mentoring,” Zoe said. “The desire to achieve my short and long term goals shaped the path that I chose. “I trained for international ballet competitions, which presented the opportunity to dance in front of the directors of prestigious international ballet schools.

Women at least 12 years from financial equality ECONOMIC equality is unlikely to be achieved until at least 2031 despite women making record progress in the March quarter, according to the latest Financy Women’s Index. The Women’s Index, which measures the economic progress of Australian women on a quarterly basis, rose 1.9 points to 122.7 points in the March quarter, up from a revised 120.8 points in December 2018. The result reflects the fastest pace of women’s quarterly progress in two years, helped by record female full-time employment, workforce participation, improved educational enrolments and earnings growth relative to men as reflected in a record low of the gender pay gap. But when the March result is compared against the aspirational guide on economic equality, the FWX Progress Target of 161.6 points, it shows that women are 34 per cent short or 12 years away from achieving financial equality. “We still have too many Australian women unable to realise their economic potential,” said the founder of the Financy Women’s Index, Bianca HartgeHazelman. “Surprisingly, in a time of rising employment, there are women who are still underpaid and the female underemployment rate is worse than a decade ago.” More women than men are enrolling in tertiary studies to
better their qualifications but the overall gender gap in undergraduate salaries widened in 4.8 per cent in 2018, from 1.8 per cent in 2017. Technical course areas, such as Information Technology, Mining and Engineering, which remain male dominated and generally higher paying, are becoming increasingly sought after by women. The number of women in full-time employment hit a new high of 3.23 million in the March quarter, just as the female underemployment rate declined by 0.2 per cent to 10.5 per cent in January (versus 6.3 per cent for males), from 10.7 per cent in January 2018. However, the level of underemployment is worse today than it was in 2009, when the underemployment rate for women stood at 8.8 per cent compared to 5.2 per cent for men. The number of women occupying ASX 200 board positions rose to 29.7 per cent in February after a dip to 29.6 per cent in January. However, a disappointing end to 2018 appears to have affected the momentum seen earlier in support of gender board diversity. Connie McKeage CEO of Australian listed fintech company OneVue said more needs to be done to support women who want to work, particularly those with children or caring for loved ones.

Hardy cut-leaf daisies
SUMMER is behind us. Nights are lengthening and welcome coolness is heralding the onset of autumn. It’s time to change focus from keeping the garden alive to planning to replace plants that haven’t survived the long, hot summer. Now is an ideal time to note survivors and to plant more of the same to fill empty spaces. The cut-leaf daisy [Brachycome multifida] is ideal. It has many forms. It occurs naturally in grassy understories of woodlands and open forests in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. It often grows in shallow, rocky soils. It is a compact, mounding low-growing plant, which lightly suckers and can form a delightful ground cover. It is ideal for hanging baskets, rockeries, borders and in massed plantings.
Prolific, neat daisy flowers sit on naked stems above the foliage. Flower colour ranges from mauve, to blue, purple, white, pink and lemon. Cultivars include ‘Amethyst’, ‘Breakoday’, ‘Bright Eyes’, ‘White Surprise’, ‘Pilliga Posy’ and ‘Jumbo Tricolour’. B. multifida is one of the easiest plants to propagate from stem cuttings. If cuttings are taken now, they will form roots rapidly, and after potting on for several weeks, new plants will be ready to plant out in May. Select vigorous healthy cutting material. The propagating medium should be an open free-draining mix which retains moisture. Rooted suckers from a parent plant can be directly planted into good garden soil.
B. multifida is a non-fuss plant for sun or part shade. Most soils are suitable. It can survive without additional water, but benefits from a watering in dry weather. B. multifida flowers almost all year, with flushes of flowers in spring and summer. It is moderately frost-tolerant. Delay tidying up the plants until the danger of frost is over. Addition of a slow release fertilizer in spring and autumn will maintain healthy new growth. B. multifida has been well-known in cultivation for many years. A selection from these delightful Aussie originals may be the perfect choice to brighten up your autumn garden.

tissues before the left side of the heart, namely the lungs. The increased blood pressure in this area leads to fluid leaking out from the bloodstream into the tissues of the lungs. This situation is called congestion and limits the ability of the blood to absorb oxygen from each breath the animal takes. As a result exercise tolerance can be limited. Coughing can also be a feature as the leaking fluid sits in the airways of the lungs too. Luckily left sided congestive heart disease due to mitral valve leakage is a disease that has been studied extensively, and many medications are available to help dogs suffering this ailment. Unfortunately it cannot be cured, but medications can dramatically improve a pet’s quality of life and extend their life expectancy significantly. If your pet has suddenly had a reduction in their ability to exercise, and especially if they have developed a cough, please see your veterinarian for a checkup.

“This resulted in receiving multiple scholarship offers to ballet schools across America and Europe. “I completed my training in Florida, USA, and was offered my first company contract at the Sarasota Ballet at the age of 17,” Zoe said, adding that during that time, she performed works by artists such as Ashton, Bintley, and Balanchine. “I have now returned home and look to use my experience to date to seek even greater opportunities within the dance and entertainment industry as the Projection Dance Ambassador.” Through all of her career so far, Zoe said her fondest memory has been “the opportunity to work with world acclaimed choreographers, dancers and photographers, whether it was in majestic theatres with grand set

She said it was great to be able to continue her career locally. “It has been exciting to be able to work with the Projection Dance team at this point in my career,” Zoe said. “I am able to use my own experience through Projection Dance to create new opportunities, locally and on a global spectrum.” Projection Dance Company have performances scheduled for Wangaratta and Wodonga later this year. THERE are many different types of heart disease that can affect our pets, but the most common is mitral valve disease in small breed dogs. The mitral valve separates the left atrium from the left ventricle and is designed to prevent the backflow of blood when the heart beats. In normal operation when the heart beats, all the blood is pushed forward to provide oxygenated blood to the body’s tissues. When the mitral valve is not operating properly, most of the blood moves forward, but some is squirted backwards into the atrium. The amount of blood that flows backwards is relative to how leaky the valve has become. In a clinical examination, this blood squirting back through the valve can be heard as an abnormal sound called a heart murmur. In mitral valve disease, this murmur is heard on the left side of the chest. The presence of a murmur suggests some dysfunction in the valve and can be further investigated by chest x-rays and ultrasound of the heart. The big problem with a leaky valve is that the blood that is shot backwards ends up pooling in the

◆ SUPERB SUNSET: If you’re planning on heading to Lake Mulwala fishing late in the day be sure to take a camera as sunset can be a beautiful time to be on the water.
LAST Sunday evening Brett Corker and I fished the Ovens River downstream of Wangaratta where we found the fishing to be very tough. Brett managed to catch one small Murray cod around 30cm long on a spinnerbait and lost one other. I did not get a touch - I caught what is known in fishermen’s terms as a fishing donut - a big fat 0. This pretty much sums up the cod fishing across North East Victoria at the moment. It’s very hit and miss, with Lake Mulwala and the Murray River being the only exception.
The cod fishing has been quite consistent in the Murray River system over the last few weeks and should remain this way for a while yet. I went for a drive to Lake Mulwala on Saturday afternoon with my camera to do some photography, and the number of boats at the Majors Creek boat ramp told a story. It’s a popular place to fish at this time of the year. Last weekend my family and I went to Lake Moodemere where we managed to catch four small carp using worms for bait. We were practicing catch and re-

lease carp fishing - catching them healthy, and release them with substantial neck injuries so that they floated on the surface and presented an irresistible meal to the resident sea eagles and whistling kites. I have heard a few reports and seen some great photos of decent yellowbelly being caught at Lake Eildon over the past couple of weeks. I am unsure what they have been caught on, but they have been caught. I suspect Lake Eildon might be worth a visit if you are looking for somewhere to target some larger yellowbelly at the moment.

◆ STAY VIGILANT: There is plenty you can do to take a proactive approach to the health of your reproductive tract.
Taking care down there WE are all aware of the bacterial ecosystem in the gut, but have you ever given a thought for the microbiota found inside the female reproductive tract? There is lots of awareness about the ‘bad dudes’ that hang out here, infection causing agents like candida (thrush), GBS (strep B in pregnancy), STDS like chlamydia and those causing vaginosis/vulvinitis and urinary tract infections like E.coli and staphylococcus etc, even parasites and worms can hang out in the urinary and reproductive tract, causing a great deal of symptoms and distress. Whilst antibiotics are often needed to clear up serious overgrowth of these infections, recurrence is common. A healthy vaginal microbiota is made up of H202 producing lactobacillus (specifically the rhamnosis strain) and needs a good amount of these to pre-
vent the overgrowth of those symptom causing ‘bad dudes’ listed above. Of course you can reintroduce more lactobacillus with commercial or practitioner only probiotics, just as you can use probiotics for symptoms of gut dysfunction, but we feel it is best to do this in conjunction with improving the environment these guys live in first. Creating a healthy space for these H202 loving bacteria to reside is more economical then continuing to kill the bad guys with antibiotics or adding more and more probiotics at this area. How to do this? If you are prone to UTIs, any of the above infections or vulvitis (common in two - four year old girls) these tips may help along with treating the current infection (with antibiotics and replacing the strains of lactobacilis probiotics):
· Reduce spermicide use; · Reduce antibiotic use (work on preventative health or try natural medicines to treat some sinus infections, colds, coughs etc); · Stop using soaps, douching, bubble baths etc; · Stop smoking; · Swap to natural lubricants such as Sylk; · Swap to natural/organic cotton sanitary items such as TOMs, Cottons etc (don’t put chemicals/pestacides in there); · Practice safe sex, esp with new sexual partners; · If prone to recurrent infections, get your partner swabbed/treated too; and · Wear cotton underwear and breathable materials.

WINE TALK

FOOD TALK
Pizzini Wines 2016 Pietra Rossa Sangiovese THERE is something about the stillness of autumn, along with the cool nights and sunny days, which makes it many people’s favourite season. Perhaps it’s also the spectacular colours too seeing beautiful trees almost express a sigh of relief after the heat, their leaves turning an array of reds and golds before falling gently to the ground. While smoke from ďŹ res in the south east of the state still hangs in the air, it’s a reminder to remember those who have been impacted, and not to take for granted that it wasn’t us this time. We also begin the transition from light, refreshing meals to more warm and hearty fare, and that’s where Sangiovese comes into its own as a versatile table wine. Pizzini Wines Pietra Rossa Sangiovese has a deep red colour with a slight glow of amber
with Anita McPherson and an aroma reminiscent of the end of season raspberries. The avour leans more towards cherries and there is a richness and juiciness in the way it feels in the mouth which is really worth taking time to enjoy. Then there is a savoury quality; it’s there in the aroma and in the taste, which adds a little woody spice and gentle earthiness to the mix. Perfect with pizza, pasta and red meats, this is a wine for autumn but truth is it belongs on the table all year around, especially when friends and family come over for dinner. TECH & SCIENCE
with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ HAVE YOU HEARD THE WORD: Langauges have evolved throughout human history in much the same way species evolved via the mechanisms of mutation and natural selection.
Linguistics and Etymology: A history of language ALL social animals communicate with one another, from ants to bees, to dolphins and dogs, but only one extant species has developed languages beyond a few prearranged signals - human beings. Our ability to speak even differs in a physical way to how it evolved in other animals. It comes from a cortical speech centre which does not respond instinctively, but organises sound and meaning on a rational basis. This section of the brain is unique to the homo genus. Precisely when and how we first developed language is impossible to say, but it’s generally assumed that its evolution must have been a very long process, with its earliest manifestation predating homosapiens. Our ancestors were probably speaking a million years ago, but with a slower delivery,
a smaller vocabulary and above all a simpler grammar than we are accustomed to. Origins of languages While the origin of language as a whole may forever remain obscure, the origin of particular languages has been a particular fascination of multiple disciplines of study for the past several centuries. There are around 5000 languages spoken in the world today, with a full third of those being virtually unique to Africa. Scholars, however, typically group them into close to 20 families. These groups are linked together by shared words, sounds or grammatical construction, with the theory being that each group of languages has descended from one common ancestor (in a avery similar fashion to
biological evolution), in some cases as recently as 3000 years ago. Groupings and common ancestry The most widespread group of languages today is the IndoEuropean, spoken by half the world’s population. This entire group, ranging from Hindi and Persian to Norwegian and English, is believed to descend from the language of a tribe of nomads roaming the plains of eastern Europe and western Asia (in modern terms centring on the Ukraine) as recently as about 3000 BC From around 2000 BC people speaking Indo-European languages began to spread throughout Europe, eventually reaching the Atlantic coast. They also penetrated far into Asia - occupying the Iranian plateau and India. Another very important
group in the early history of west Asia and still of high significance today were the peoples who speak Semitic languages. Semitic languages, much like Indo-European, were also believed to have been derived from a single group of nomadic group, possibly in southern Arabia. By about 3000 BC, Semitic languages were spoken over a large tract of desert territory from south Arabia to the north of Syria. Several Semitic peoples play a prominent part in the early civilisation of the region, from the Babylonians and Assyrians to the Hebrews and Phoenicians. One particular Semitic language, Aramaic, became the first example of a lingua franca (a common second language among disparate peoples) of the Middle East.
Trading more than words Over the course of history languages continually infiltrate each other, as words are spread by conquest, empire, trade, religion, and technology. A good surviving example of this process is the line in western Europe dividing the Romance languages (those deriving from a ‘Roman’ example) from the Germanic tongues. The Romance family includes Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Romanian (the result of a successful Roman campaign in the 2nd century AD). The Germanic group is English, Dutch, Flemish, German, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish and Icelandic. This linguistic division exactly reflects the influence of the Roman empire. Italy, France and the peninsula of Spain were sufficiently

stable regions in the Roman world to retain the influence of Latin after the collapse of the empire. The Germanic areas east and north of the Rhine were never fully brought under Roman control (the exact linguistic dividing line survives in modern Belgium, with its population speaking French in the south and Flemish in the north). Meanwhile, England was safely within the empire for three centuries. But the Romanized Celts were not strong enough to resist the invading German tribes - the Angles and the Saxons. Their languages prevailed in the form of Anglo-Saxon. Modern English occupies a middle position within the western European family of languages, with its vocabulary approximately half Germanic and half Romance in origin.

FORGET Richmond versus Carlton or Geelong versus Collingwood; one of the most anticipated clashes in the opening week of the AFL will be tonight at 9pm when Channel Seven’s The Front Bar goes head to head with Nine’s The Footy Show. While The Front Bar returns with the settled line-up of Mick Molloy, Sam Pang and Andy Maher, its rival and for-
mer dominating force in this genre is still trying to find its relevance. The former established list and foundation players of The Footy Show, Eddie McGuire and Sam Newman, appear to have been sidelined as bit players who will no longer appear weekly but now in a number of ‘Footy Show specials’ throughout the season, “capturing the big moments that

could not make today’s Regional Extra. What I can tell you is that The Footy Show has dropped so low in ratings you would get a bigger audience at a
Suns and Freo clash in Adelaide than watch this show, unless there are truly major changes. For me, the show hasn’t been the same since Trevor
Marmalade was delisted. For tonight, we will be watching the proven, consistent and often joyful Front Bar and check out the Footy Show during the ad breaks.
