fever ◆ DANCING UP A STORM: (Left to Right) Dakota Denyer, Amelia Cabalar and Caitlin Lewis.

FROM volunteering as a door person to becoming president for five years, Terri Dillow has come a long way. The current president of the Wangaratta Festival of Dance committee has always been a performer, but not in dance. “I have always loved performing from a young age, but not in dance, in music,” she said. “I competed in the Wangaratta Eisteddfod for 10 years and then had students enter for many years as well. “The love of dance started when

my daughter, Courtney, started in 2000 as a 3 year old and I have always loved watching dance. “My daughter started competing at the WFOD in 2004, and only stopped last year in 2017, which makes her one of the longest running competitors to date.” For Terri, her love of dance comes from watching the children have a great time. “I love the looks on their faces when they get into their costume and the excitement they share, but most of all is watching them shine on stage, doing what they love.”

Terri’s involvement in the Wangaratta Festival of Dance began in 2001, when she asked to volunteer as a door person. Her involvement in with the Wangaratta Eisteddfod Committee for 10 years gave her the knowledge about how committees work. “I was asked to join the committee around 2004 and since then have progressed from being a general committee member, to secretary and then President, which I have been for 5 years,” she said. Tax time tips for small business THE Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is helping small businesses get it right this tax time. Here are some tips to help you prepare. Get your records ready A way to have a stress-free tax time is to keep up-to-date records. Keeping good records will help small businesses to complete and lodge their tax returns, manage cash flow, meet their tax obligations and understand how their business is doing. For more information on what records are needed for tax returns visit ato.gov.au/taxreturnrecords or use the ATO’s record keeping evaluation tool to evaluate how well a small business is keeping business records. Consider small business concessions A range of tax concessions could help at tax time. For example, simplified trading stock rules means if the estimate of the difference between opening and closing trading stock is $5000 or less, the small business doesn’t need to do a stocktake. Small businesses who use simplified depreciation rules can take advantage of the $20,000 instant asset write-off. To be able to write off the business portion in a 2018 tax return the small business has to buy and install assets that cost less than

$20,000 by June 30, 2018. Check out ato.gov.au/concessionsataglance to learn more. Check your deductions Most expenses incurred in running a business can be claimed as a deduction. This includes operating expenses, business travel expenses, home based business costs and costs of employing people. Visit ato.gov.au/businessdeductions to find out more about what can be claimed. Find out if changes apply to you There are a few changes that apply from July 1, for example employers with 20 or more employees are required to start reporting through Single Touch Payroll, unless they or their payroll software provider have been granted a deferral or they have been granted an exemption by the ATO. Also, if a small business is registered for GST and imports low value goods for business use in Australia, they may not need to pay GST. They simply need to tell their supplier that they are registered for GST, and provide them with their ABN. Stay up to date on changes is by subscribing to the ato.gov.au/sbnews. Visit ato.gov.au/sbsupport for an overview of the ATO’s tools, services and assistance.

with MANDI MCDONALD, Gardening Specialist ◆ TIDY UP: Keep your fruit trees and surrounds neat and free of dead wood and debris over winter.

Winter tree maintenance WINTER has arrived and brought the rain all along with it ,which is very welcome. It is time to start maintaining your deciduous fruit and ornamental trees while they are in their dormant state. After a long dry season you may find that some of your trees have dead or diseased branches. It is important to prune these as they will inhibit the trees new growth as it comes back to life in spring. Fruit trees particularly need to be pruned each year to help create a good shape and allow easy access when picking fruit. There are different rules that apply when pruning some types of fruit tree. Some fruit on new wood and others on older wood, so it important to know what applies to the fruit trees you are working with. If you are unsure don’t prune heavily just tidy up damaged or crossing branches and anything growing

towards the centre of the tree. You can always do a light summer prune once the tree has finished fruiting if you feel it is getting too big. Clean up all fallen leaves and branches around your trees as this is where pests and diseases can harbour for the winter. You can spray for leaf curl once the tree is pruned using a copper based spray or lime sulphur. You should spray again in mid winter and again at budswell. Leaf curl is a fungal disease that effects the leaves of peaches and nectarines. Ornamental trees may only need a prune to reduce size and maintain a good shape. A lot of ornamentals don’t need pruning at all if they are growing well. If you are unsure about pruning pop down and see us at the nursery for some advice. Happy gardening.

FEATURE STORY

VET CORNER

Obesity in pets JUST like in the human population, obseity is one of the most common health problems we see in our companion animals. However, despite the large numbers of obese animals in the general population, pet owners are not often aware that their pet has a weight issue. This is due to the fact that many people may have a preconceived idea of what their dog or cat’s breed normally looks like. However, this is frequently a misconception as it does not align to their pet’s ideal body condition. As with humans, there is considerable variation in an animal’s body shape and size, even within the same breed, so it is difficult to list an ideal weight for any individual. Your pet’s optimal body condition is determined by examining the ratio between muscle and fat on their frame. Generally an ideal body condition in dogs and cats includes being able to see their waist, feel their ribs easily with a little bit of fat covering them, with the abdomen tucked up underneath the body and not sagging toward the ground.

by Alistair Chatto, VETERINARIAN Obesity in companion animals is linked to many other diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease and arthritis, so it is important that obese animals have their weight managed. The most common reason for weight gain is due to an excessive energy intake – ie feeding too much! Even very active dogs can become overweight, if their meals are too large. Hence feeding an appropriate portion of a good quality pet food is important for your pets health and wellbeing. Feeding guides on packs of food are a good place to begin, but as stated, they are only a “guide”! If you have an overweight pet with other health issues, determining an appropriate food and portion size can be achieved with consultation with your vet. Remember, if you want to keep track of your animal’s weight, you can pop in to your local vet clinic and use the scales anytime.

PET CORNER THIS week’s pet of the week at Wangaratta RSPCA is Angus, a desexed male kelpie mix with blue and white fur who is one year and 11 months old. To see more animals up for adoption at the Wangaratta RSPCA, visit the shelter in Connell Street or phone (03) 5722 2874.

17 years of dance fever

Ŷ From page 1 Since Terri’s first involvement with the festival, she has watched it grow and change quite a bit. “The festival has always been very popular with local dance school and surrounding areas and the competition was around 4-5 days,” she said. “In 2012 we had record entries of around 1000 and we now have dancers travelling from Melbourne, Bendigo and Sydney. “In the last 4 years we have progressed online entries which has made a huge difference to the running of the event, we can cap numbers for example, and it’s a lot more efficient. “We changed the event to free to the public so anyone in the community can come and watch five full days of dancing for free.” As part of the committee, Terri is always looking of ways the festival can grow. “We are a small committee of eight and we are all volunteers, so we give up our time to run this event over five days,” she said. “We all work well together to provide this event for our local dancers and we have enough support to have a 6th day for 2019. “We have lots of plans to grow as the dance world changes with new styles and ideas. “We are a non for profit organisation and would love to get some more sponsors on board to help with our running costs.” Also among the committed locals keeping the festival running are local women Maryon Vaughan and Sarah Lewis. Sarah’s daughters, Kaitlin and Amber, have performed at the festival and Sarah, who danced jazz, ballet and tap herself as a child, has been involved in the festival since 2000, including stints as the secretary and treasurer. “The atmosphere, and seeing the

the joy the kids get from dancing,” Maryon said. Terri believes the festival is not only beneficial for the dancers; it’s also beneficial for the town. “The festival brings a lot of revenue into our town over the two weekends and I believe we have the best venue in North East Victoria, with many out of town schools stating it’s the best they have been to as everything is there under one roof,” she said. “For local dancers, they have the opportunity to perform at the best place without having to travel anywhere. “This year we celebrated our 20th Birthday of WFOD, which is a massive milestone for a small community group; here’s hoping its still running in another 20 years.”

Temperatures continue to drop ACTIVITY is building up on local mountains as the cold temperatures of winter continue to set in, and snow begins to fall. While there are few events on the calendar at the moment, a visit to local mountains for snow play, skiing, snowboarding and more is still on the cards (check with your intended destination as to current snow cover and activities). Falls Creek will host the first of the Snow, Trek and Travel Mini Series from 11am, with more information available at Australian Cross Country Skiing 2018 Race Calendar at ww.ausxc.com. This Sunday will also see the Fast and Female event at Lake Mountain, near Marysville, a day of cross country ski instruction for women. You can head to Mt Buller to indulge your inner adventurer, as the

mountain will be hosting the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour this Saturday, showing films shot in some of the most wild and remote parts of the world. More information is available at www.banffaustralia.com.au or the Banff Mountain Film Festival – Australia Facebook page. Mt Hotham is in preparation for their Brand New Day, on Saturday, June 30. Some snow is beginning to fall at Mt Buffalo, see the Parks Victoria snow reports outlining conditions and chain requirements at ski hires in the valley below and also on the Mount Buffalo Ski School facebook page www.facebook.com/mountbuffaloskischool. There is a snow cam located at Dingo Dell with a view of the toboggan run so you can also view the snow conditions your-

self before driving up - see www.mtbuffalocam.com.au Keep an eye on snow cams or ask at your local ski hire business or tourism information centre to find out current snow levels, snow chain fitting advice, and weather at resorts around the area. Starting children on solids ‘Wholefoods for children’ is a naturopathic motto, followed by our mantra of ‘start them on food, not numbers’. This basic principle or naturopathic philosophy of buying, preparing and serving simple healthy food to children as they wean off breastmilk (or formula) seems to be lost in the convenience era of fortified packaged baby foods. Around the world traditional cultures start babies on cooked rice porridges, lightly steamed or pureed vegies and fruits. For iron they add meaty home cooked broths and fresh seasonal

FOOD TALK

WINE TALK

Campbells of Rutherglen 2017 Riesling THE annual Winery Walkabout was held in Rutherglen recently when 20,000 odd punters rolled into town to visit Ňċëǝ ƅƍǝ Ŝëħőëŀǝ that hosted winethemed events. It still hard to believe the festival źǝļŀŇǝŀŇÊļŇëçǝĎħǝƅƍƋƈƼǝ at a time when there wouldn’t have been quite so many venues involved, tickets didn’t have to be booked in advance, and there wasn’t a shuttle bus to move the partying peeps around. In those days transportation came via a friend’s Kombi, we relied ĭħǝĹőàğĎáǝĹċĭħëǝàĭŧëŀǝŇĭǝáÊğğǝċĭĦëǝ and the only real food truck doing good business was Mr Whippy. Over the years wine varieties have also changed and stalwarts have gone in and out of fashion, but a variety like Riesling keeps popping back up and it’s because it deserves to be noticed.

with ANITA McPHERSON Campbells of Rutherglen has also been there since the very beginning and their Riesling is a classic. It’s made from fruit which was picked in mid-February and apparently early in the morning to keep the fruit as cold as possible. It has a lightly green hue and a fresh aroma, vibrant with lemon ÊħçǝÿļÊāļÊħŇǝŝĎŇċǝżǝĭļÊğŀǁ The freshness can also be apĹļëáĎÊŇëçǝ Ďħǝ Ňċëǝ żǝÊŜĭőļǝ ŝċĎáċǝ ċÊŀǝ more of that citrus and quince fruit, but lingers and changes developing honey-like overtones on the way to a crisply acidic finish. It’s lovely on its own but also pairs well with seafood, or something like a spicy chicken stir fry. There are good reasons why some wine, and it seems wineries, really go the distance. Upskilling can be a two way street WHOSE responsibility is upskilling? Ask employers and they suggest employees but ask professionals and many say the organisation they work for should be accountable. That is one key ďŹ nding from research carried out by recruiting experts Hays amongst 1253 professionals and 951 employers. A massive 96 per cent of the professionals surveyed consider upskilling as ‘important’ or ‘very important’, 84 per cent would not consider a role that lacked skills development and 47 per cent wouldn’t join an organisation that didn’t offer formal training opportunities. For some, not receiving time off to attend seminars or conferences (34 per cent), a lack of coaching (27 per cent) or mentorships (24 per cent) and not providing time off for university or TAFE studies (18 per cent) are deal breakers. Interestingly, 64 per cent said they were more likely to join and stay with an organisation that uses the latest technology. the time, suggests the half-life of learned skills is falling rapidly while the longer working life of people means “the concept of career is being shaken to its core. “In the past, employee learning was to gain skills for a career; now, the career itself is a journey of learning, the report authors said. But the question remains: Who should be responsible for keeping people upskilled? Individuals or employers? “Given that the Fourth Industrial Revolution is reshaping how every industry and profession operates via digital transformation and technologies such as AI, the answer is probably a combination of employers hiring in active learners with a demonstrated history of upskilling, while also training up their existing employees, Nick said. London School of Economics Professor Lynda Gratton suggests in the book, the 100-Year Life, Living and Working in the Age of Longevity, that government should also play a role by “schooling people throughout their lives but employers must drive skill building at work and help employees understand their options to skill up no matter their age or career stage.

The human heart is a complicated thing THE parts of the human heart can be broken down into four chambers, muscular walls, vessels, and a conductive system. The two upper chambers are called the atria, with lower parts called ventricles. These all work together to make up the vital function of your heart. Everybody knows that the human heart is the essential organ in our bodies. But few people know all its parts and their essential functions. Broadly speaking, the human heart has one function: to pump blood through the circulatory system all throughout the body, thus supplying both nutrients and oxygen to the body’s tissues while also removing all the wastes, including carbon dioxide. Here is the full list of all the parts of the human heart and their essential functions: The Aorta: this is the largest artery in the human body. Arteries are tubular branching elastic-walled muscle vessels that carry blood all the way from the heart through the body. The main function of the aorta is to take oxygenated blood all the way from the left ventricle to the rest of the body. The Pulmonary Artery: this artery is responsible for carrying deoxygenated blood all the way from the right ventricle to the lungs. Oxygenated blood: the word “oxygenated simply means that it carries oxygen. So, oxygenated blood is the blood that carries oxygen. Deoxygenated blood: the word

TECH & SCIENCE with Chris Febvre, GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ A WHOLE LOT OF HEART: The human heart is an organ that pumps blood throughout the body via the circulatory system, supplying oxygen and nutrients to the tissues and removing carbon dioxide and other wastes. “deoxygenated simply means that it carries very little or no oxygen. So, deoxygenated blood is the blood that carries either very little or no oxygen. The Right Atrium: this part of the human body is tasked with receiving deoxygenated blood from the rest of the body. The Pulmonary Vein: Veins are the tubular branching vessels that carry blood all the way from the capillaries and take it to the heard. The function of the pulmonary vein is to take oxygenated blood all the way from the lungs to the left atrium. The Left Ventricle: A ventricle is any of the cavities of a bodily part or organ. This ventricle, in particular, is the

chamber of the heart that gets blood from a corresponding atrium. The left ventricle is from where the blood is forced into the different arteries. The essential function that the left ventricle carries out is pumping oxygenated blood into the aorta. The Right Ventricle: the right ventricle is tasked with pumping deoxygenated blood into the pulmonary artery. The Coronary Vessels: these vessels supply the myocardium (the heart muscle) with the necessary supply of blood. There is a main left coronary that goes into the circumex artery, supplying blood to the left atrium. There is a right coronary vessel that goes into the right marginal

artery, supplying blood to the right atrium and the right ventricle. The Arteries: the arteries are tasked with carrying blood away from the heart. These blood vessels are muscular tubes. The aorta is the largest artery. Each and every artery is lined with three layers of sooth tissue. The three layers are the intima, which is the inner layer whose tissue is called endothelium; then, there the media, which is a muscle layer whose role is to allow the human heart to deal with high pressures; ďŹ nally, there is the adventitia, which connects the arteries to tissue. The Veins: the veins are tasked with carrying blood toward the heart. The Tricuspid Valve: this is the

vale that is located between the right ventricle and the right atrium. Most people are born with a tricuspid valve, which is the valve with three cusps located between the aorta and the left ventricle. The Vena Cava: this is the largest vein in the human body (vena is Latin for vein). Its essential function is to carry blood from all around the body all the way to the heart. There is a superior vena cava and an inferior vena cava. The superior vena cava is tasked with carrying blood to the upper body: neck, head, and both upper limbs back to the heart. What the inferior vena cava does is carrying blood back from the lower parts of the body back to the heart.

"Giving significant donations can often become possible for people at specific times in their life, such as retirement, or the sale of a business or major assets. As part of a broader financial planning approach, giving to charity, or setting up a sub fund with a community foundation allows clients to fulfill a desire to give back while also providing taxation benefits." - P. Ahne, Accountant, Myrtleford.

Gifts to Australian registered charities with Deductible gift recipient status (DGR item 1 or 2) allow a donor to claim back the value of that gift on their annual tax return thus reducing or minimizing their tax. Tax deductible donations are also seen by some donors as an incentive that allows them to give more than they normally would.

“With a tax deduction I can essentially give twice as much because I can give the gift and claim it back the following year – Community Foundation donor.

Other donors use philanthropic giving as part of a broader strategy to assist with minimising capital gains and business taxes.

Satire meets song in Stories From Norway Channel Chat SHOW: Stories From Norway: The Musical! CHANNEL: SBS Viceland TIME: Wednesdays, 8.30pm with FREYJA POSTLETHWAITE WHAT does the fox say? What’s the deal with Stonehenge? These are among many questions that have plagued my mind since they were first put to me in the form of song by Norwegian comedy duo, Ylvis. The musical numbers were nothing short of ridiculous and continue to be referenced regularly in my friendship circles and by my family members. There is little doubt, then, that ‘Stories From Norway: The Musical!’ will be similarly

outlandish, nonsensical and fun. What is more promising still is that these important stories will be told again how Ylvis storytell best – through the magic of music. This series explores different aspects of life and historic events in Norway, from the 1995 Andoya Missile Crisis to the theft of Edvard Munch’s ‘Scream’ from the National Gallery during the Lillehammer Olympic Winter Games in 1994. While many of the topics chosen for coverage in the show don’t seem to be of comic persuasion, brothers Vegard and Bård Ylvisåker certainly know how to inject humour into their stories. ‘Stories From Norway: The Musical!’ is at the very least entertaining and is definitely worth a watch, even if it’s different from your usual viewing preferences. I’m yet to go back and watch the episodes I’ve missed on SBS On Demand, but I’m sure there will be a few more iconic lines added to the realm of “What does the fox say?” after I do.

THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS: Mystery Diners (SBS Food Network, 10.30pm, weeknights) Watch as members of a company place themselves in numerous positions in hospitality establishments including as new staff members and as customers to identify potentially troublesome employees to help businesses. If You Are The One (SBS Viceland, 6pm, weeknights) One man, 24 women deciding if he’s good enough. If you think Australian dating shows are bizarre, watch this and then make up your mind. Travel Man (SBS Viceland, 8.05pm, Monday) Let Richard Ayoade and his famous friends take you through a number of beautiful and exciting locations across the globe.

◆ SING ALONG: Vegard (left) and Bård Ylvisåker serve up plenty of laughs in this musical.
