Castle on the hill By BELINDA HARRISON A YOUNG boy, set free from his schooling week, rides through town to visit his parents. His legs pump but the hill is too steep, he has to push his bike the rest of the way. At the top he pauses briefly to catch his breath before setting off again. Past the ha-ha wall, beneath the trees, into the asylum he goes. It’s not a scary place, the residents are not intimidating; the female patients fuss and fawn over him, they make him feel welcome and soon his mother - the ward assistant - arrives. For a time, that was Frank Prem’s life, it was normal. He spent his weekends riding ‘up top’ to Mayday Hills Hospital in Beechworth - where his mother worked on the women’s ward and his father in the main kitchen. He was not afraid or even particularly fascinated by the patients - they just became commonplace, familiar, a part of his life. “They came down into the town from up top,” Frank said. “Football was very big in Beechworth and there would always be one or two who came to the local matches, either accompanied by nurses or attending on their own.” Frank’s family arrived at the Bonegilla Migrant Camp from Croatia, via Germany. Frank’s grandfather had a relative in Beechworth and the family stayed with him while Frank’s parents sought work, his father finding a job milling in the bush around Beechworth and later becoming a kitchenhand at Mayday Hills.

Myxomatosis (or Myxo) MYXOMATOSIS (shortened to “myxoâ€?) is a disease that affects rabbits and is caused by the myxoma virus. The virus was introduced into Australia in 1950 in an attempt to control the wild rabbit population. Symptoms of myxo include skin tumours or lumps around the body, conjunctivitis, swelling around the head and genitals, fever, listlessness, decreased appetite, and in some cases blindness. Rabbits can also get secondary infections such as pneumonia and they usually die within 14 days of contracting the disease. Unfortunately there is no treatment for myxo so most rabbits die or have to be euthanised. The disease is spread by direct contact with an affected animal or by being bitten by eas or mosquitoes

with Dr Annette Kelleher, Veterinarian that have fed on an infected rabbit. In other countries rabbits can be vaccinated to prevent myxo but in Australia the vaccine is unavailable because if pet rabbits were vaccinated they could pass on immunity to the wild rabbit population. The best option is to try and prevent a pet rabbit from contracting the disease by protecting them from mosquitoes, eas and contact with wild rabbits. In mosquito season, rabbits can be housed in mosquito proofed cages or be housed indoors. If you suspect your pet rabbit has developed myxo your vet should be consulted.

â—† XMAS ALIVE: Living trees, such as the Norfolk pine, can be a great traditional alternative to plastic, storebought trees, and can live for many years after their ďŹ rst Christmas.

Living Christmas trees IT’S that time of year again when we dust off our Chrissy decorations and put up the old tree. My poor old tree has seen better days and made its way to the tip last year and I am uninspired by the shop bought ones to ďŹ nd a replacement. I remember going camping as kids and we would ďŹ nd a young Eucalyptus sapling that we would decorate with a bit of tinsel and some old baubles that Mum had deemed “worn out enoughâ€? for outside use and we would think that it was the best thing going. One particularly wet Christmas, we awoke to ďŹ nd our ‘tree’ marooned on an island surrounded by fast owing water looking very sad as the tinsel draped forlornly at its feet. Just as well we hadn’t put any presents under it! A few years ago my young nephews visited from Western Australia and I decorated a large potted Juniperus chinensis ‘Spartan’ with tinsel and lights and they loved it more than the inside model. So this year, I might think about a living Christmas tree instead, which can look great dressed up and will live happily in pots for many years. Many of our Aussie natives make a wonderful standin and my favourite would have to be the Woolly Bush (Adenanthos sericeus) for its soft silvery foliage and small red owers.

YOUR HEALTH Brown Brothers Prosecco Mini

WITH another invitation to brunch received there was yet BOPUIFS SFBTPO UP m OE B TVJUBCMF drink to enjoy with the kinds of things you have for breakfast. This time I was also tasked with bringing bread and some kind of juice, and I think I nailed it with an artisanal spelt sourdough and a real juice made from freshly squeezed oranges. It paired well with the eggs, bacon and asparagus the host cooked on the barbecue, all while being surrounded by a gaggle of girls who squeal and squawk and rarely shut up. Such a rare occasion, with everyone at the one place at the one time, was cause for celebration, so opening a bottle of Prosecco seemed only natural. And plonking a couple of packs of minis on the table looked cute and felt appropriate. This fruity drop came to life PODF PQFOFE GSPUIZ BOE m [[Z with a lively aroma of citrus and apple. would be wasted - some enjoying the morning tipple straight from the bottle, some sharing and mixing with orange and others pocketing one for later. But it went beautifully with eggy asparagus and lashings of bacon on sourdough, refreshing what could otherwise have been a fatty fry-up. I think we just invented the Brunchecco.

This Day in History, 1866 THE foundation stone of the Rutherglen Town Hall was laid on this day by the Mayor, Thomas Nott. Pioneer settler Lindsay Brown of Gooramadda handed the silver trowel to Cr. Nott for the official laying of the stone. Perhaps the most remembered words from that occasion were spoken by Lindsay Brown. In his speech, he predicted that more wealth would be won from the first few inches of the ground than from lower down. It was good advice. The deeply buried gold was not to be the mainstay of the Rutherglen of the future. The settlers turned to the more accessible grape vine, and the rest, as they say, is history.

with Naturopaths Belinda McPherson and Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) â—† LETTUCE EAT: As the weather warms up, we should start to eat fresh salads and fruit to help our body detox after winter. PHOTO: Shutterstock

Winter is over and spring has sprung IDEALLY our food should now transition from warm (temperature and spices) slow cooked meats and pulses to soft green salads mixed through proteins with bright coloured fruits and vegetables. Why do we do this?? This is a natural and simple way to begin a cleanse or detox, to shed some of those extra kilograms we “found during winter and prepare our body for a new year. What many people don’t realise is that our modern, convenient world is toxic. From plastic eating/drinking containers, pesticide laden foods, increased indoors/screen time,

stress and pharmaceuticals (including those prescribed incorrectly or over the counter). Then there are the naturally occurring toxins that accumulate in our body when all systems aren’t working well (constipation, poor gut function, skin issues etc). When you add all these up there is a huge pressure on our body to be constantly detoxing and working through toxins in our body. So sometimes it needs a hand. The best way to detox: 1. Frank and the Castle on the hill Ŷ

From page 1

It was Frank’s mother who first worked at Mayday and “in part she was taught her English by the inmates of the institution”, Frank said. “She knew German and Croatian, but not English - there were a few people from very different backgrounds who helped each other, but it was a largely untrained workforce. “Mum worked on the nursing side as a ward assistant and they more or less ran the day to day of the wards back then.” Frank’s older sister eventually worked in the office at the institution as well, and as Frank grew, he was determined not to do the same thing. He believed he was meant for ‘something with more glamourous potential’ than remaining in a small town and work-

ing where the rest of his family, and half the town, did. “I swore they’d never get me, but I was wrong,” Frank laughed. “My first jobs were anything but (psychiatric work), I didn’t consider going into the institution, because I felt it was a dead end, in the sense that that’s what the kids in the town did, like their parents did, and I always felt I needed to get away from the little town if I could. “My first job was at the ANZ bank in Wangaratta and then I went to work at Brucks, but the factory work nearly killed me with the morning, afternoon and night shift changes each week. “I had a wife and small child at home so I decided to approach Mayday Hills to become a cleaner. “Coincidentally, they hap-

pened to be building the new acute psychiatry unit on site - the Kerferd unit - but were looking to expand their trained nursing workforce and they said ‘well we can’t give you a job as a cleaner, but would you consider being a student nurse’? “I said yes, please, not that I had any idea what that meant at the time.” Frank had started writing poetry in secondary school, turning in a poem rather than an essay at one stage. “The teacher and the other kids thought it was pretty good, which made me feel that I was doing something special,” he said. It was also something Frank enjoyed doing, and he continued to write into adulthood where he used his poetry as a way of trying to make sense of

what he saw when he began working as a psychiatric nurse. “Some things you can’t make sense of, they just are, but I still wrote about them,” he said. While at a writing retreat almost 40 years later, Frank decided it was time to get serious and start publishing the pieces as a collection. He now has three free-verse poetry books available - the first, Small Town Kid, reflects on Frank’s childhood in the 1960s and 1970s with the freedoms afforded to the times. Frank’s second book has a more serious undertone weaved within the prose and beauty of his poetry. “My second book, Devil in the Wind, is my account of the Black Saturday fires which ravaged Marysville. GONE FISHING

TECH & SCIENCE

◆ BEAUTIFUL BROWN: This nice small stream brown trout was caught on a Strike Tiger nymph softy plastic last week. Once the hot weather arrives the trout fishing may slow down in the smaller streams.

Trout, yellowbelly are getting active I HAVE not had as many fishing reports coming in from any lakes over the last week, possibly due to the constant wind which we have been experiencing. What I have seen over the last two weeks though is my social media news feeds being filled with photos of yellowbelly. I do not know where most of them have been caught, but what I do know is that right now, anywhere that has yellowbelly in it is worth wetting a line. Mid November is prime yellowbelly time. Whether it’s Lake Hume or an irrigation channel it does not matter - if it has yellowbelly in it, now is a great time to fish it. I went bait fishing with worms in the lower Ovens River on the weekend. It was absolutely amazing. In just a few hours I caught several small Murray cod, two trout cod and two Macquarie perch. All of the fish that I caught were protected by various laws such as closed season, size limits and totally protected species - so all fish were released unharmed. It is fantastic to see the lower

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF LIFE: It’s often stated that DNA was first discovered by American biologist James Watson and English physicist Francis Crick in the 1950’s, but this is not quite accurate. Rather, DNA was first identified in the late 1860s by Swiss chemist Friedrich Miescher. Then, in the decades following Miescher’s discovery, other scientists--notably, Phoebus Levene and Erwin Chargaff--carried out a series of research efforts that revealed additional details about the DNA molecule, including its primary chemical components and the ways in which they joined with one another.

Interesting facts about DNA with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA Ovens River in such great condition with such healthy numbers of native fish. When my great uncles were alive they told me what it “use to be like” and the current state of the river is beginning to resemble their amazing recollections. My mate Strawbs and I had an amazing day trout fishing in a tributary of the Ovens River last Thursday. We caught half a dozen small trout, had a few big trout follow our lures and shared a great few hours fighting blackberry bushes together. The trout streams are still in great shape however this won’t last and with hot weather at our doorstep I suspect that the trout fishing will slow down in many small streams soon.

DNA or deoxyribonucleic acid is a long molecule that contains our unique genetic code. DNA is a bit like a recipe book that instructs nature how to build all living organisms on Earth. This week, I thought we’d take a look at some interesting facts about DNA. 1. Even though it codes for all the information that makes up an organism, DNA is built using only four building blocks - the nucleotides adenine, guanine, thymine, and cytosine. 2. Every human being shares 99 per cent of their DNA with every other human. 3. If you put all the DNA molecules in your body end to end, the DNA would reach from the Earth to the Sun and back over 600 times (100 trillion times six feet divided by 92 million miles). 4. A parent and child share 99.5 per cent of the same DNA. 5. You have 98 per cent of your DNA in common with a chimpanzee. 6. If you could type 60 words per minute, eight hours a day, it would take approximately 50 years to type the human genome. 7. DNA is a fragile molecule. About a thousand times a day, something happens to it to cause errors. This could include errors during transcription, damage from ultraviolet light, or any of a host of other activities. There are many repair mechanisms, but some damage isn’t repaired - this means you carry mutations. Some of the mutations cause no harm, a few are helpful, while others can cause diseases, such as cancer.

8. A new technology called CRISPR could allow us to edit genomes, which might lead us to the cure of such mutations as cancer, Alzheimer’s and, theoretically, any disease with a genetic component. 9. Scientists at Cambridge University believe humans have DNA in common with the mud worm and that it is the closest invertebrate genetic relative to us. 10. In other words, you have more in common, genetically speaking, with a mud worm than you do with a spider or octopus or cockroach. 11. Humans and cabbage share about 40-50% common DNA. 12. Friedrich Miescher discovered DNA in 1869, although scientists did not understand DNA was the genetic material in cells until 1943. Prior to that time, it was widely believed that proteins stored genetic information. 13. The human genome is made of 3.2 billion bases of DNA but other organisms have different genome sizes. DNA has a unique ‘double helix’ shape, like a twisted ladder. This double helix structure was first discovered by Francis Crick and James Watson with the help of Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins. 14. DNA is a two-stranded molecule - each strand is composed of long sequences of the four bases, A, C, G and T. The bases on one strand of the DNA molecule pair together with complementary bases on the opposite strand of DNA to form the ‘rungs’ of the DNA ‘ladder’.
