Still rockin' on
By SHANE DOUTHIE OLD rockers never die they say, they just tour forever… or they just shake rattle and roll…. or they just play the same songs until they become popular again. The reason most continue to perform, however, is because they are having such a good time. Bruce Gregory can attest to that. He and the bands he has and still plays with have been familiar and popular entertainers around the region for two decades. He was brought up in a musical family and blessed with the rock rebel attitude from a young age - you could say he was always destined to be a rock musician. “My mother, father and brother all played music,” Bruce said. “My parents (Jim and Mary) taught me to play the piano and sing from a very young age (I guess three or four years old) but I wasn’t a very cooperative student so I was sent to other teachers in Wangaratta, but they didn’t have much luck either. “I taught myself guitar at the age of 15 when I was in a boarding house in Melbourne (doing a trade apprenticeship).

Foreign objects and cats CATS are very curious creatures and they particularly like string and wool to play with. This can be a lot of fun for cats and quite safe when supervised. However, when cats take to this play on their own they can often swallow some wool or string which can have severe consequences for them further on in their gastrointestinal tract. The other main thing to worry about with stitching cotton is that it is often attached to a needle and this can follow the cotton down the throat as well. When an animal ingests a long piece of ďŹ bre or material such as string, wool or even such things as socks or tea towels they can become a linear foreign body. Within the stomach they are relatively harmless but as the peristaltic contractions of the intestines pull the string out and through the intestinal tract the linear piece can cause the intestines to bunch up along it. An everyday example to demonstrate this idea is the elastic at the top of a skirt or pair of tracksuit pants that the material gathers along in small pleats.
with Tim Craig BVSc, Veterinarian As the intestine continues to contract the linear material can then begin to saw through the relatively fragile intestinal tissue and a rupture of the bowel may occur. The release of gut contents into the abdominal cavity is obviously a bad thing. Infectious or septic peritonitis will follow and this can be lethal. X-rays can sometimes show the pleated appearance of the gut in these cases and early removal is always best. This is often ďŹ ddly and requires multiple cuts to be made and stitched back closed as small lengths of the material are removed at a time. It is always a good idea to pack away any string, wool and stitching needles in between use. Encouraging cats to play with other items like scratching posts or feather and string toys that are used with human supervision can help prevent an unexpected visit to the vet.

â—† VERSATILE: Our Local Quandong - Santalum murrayanum.
Sandalwood trees
SANDALWOOD (Santalum spicatum) is one of 10 Australian members of the Santalaceae family. Trees are harvested commercially in the goldďŹ elds region of WA. Sandalwood is highly valuable for both its timber and essential oils. Five hundred grams of sandalwood chips costs around $A50; 100 ml of essential oil is around $A400. Sandalwood is used in Hindu, Buddhist and Moslem religious rites throughout Southeast Asia. For an alternative commercial purpose, Australian bush tucker foods have gained popularity in recent decades. Some 40 years ago, the CSIRO began researching S. acuminatum (Quandong) for plantation production. All Santalum species are root parasites, and require specialised conditions. Today there are thriving orchards in Broken Hill, the Flinders Ranges, Eyre Peninsula and the Riverland. Native peach pie and Quandong jam are delicious! The locally common Cherry Ballart (Exocarpos cupressiformis) is parasitic and a member of the Santalaceae family. This bush tucker plant bears delicious small, sweet red ‘cherries’. It is difficult to establish as a garden subject. Although not a candidate for bush tucker, a locally indigenous species – S. murrayanum (Bitter Quandong) is a worthy, unusual and ornamental garden subject.
with Helen van Riet AUSTRALIAN PLANTS SOCIETY (VIC)
It grows across much of dryland southern Australia including the Warby Ranges. It is a long-lived, drought tolerant small tree. It has light green foliage and pendent plum-sized, glossy fruits which ripen to deep red in late winter. Although Aborigines ate the seeds after roasting, the fruit is bitter-tasting. Each fruit contains a large round nut with a pitted shell. S. murrayanum plants and seeds are available commercially. ith care, trees can be grown from seed. Use several seeds as germination may be sporadic. Crack the seeds in a vice, taking care not to damage the kernel. Plant in an open-draining mix and keep moist. Germination may occur from two weeks to about two months. Plant out the seedlings as soon as they are easily handled. Do not damage the tap root. Provide a host plant such as a legume or at ground cover and keep well-watered until established.

2018 Glenrowan Old Vine Shiraz THEY say the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, yet it seems not all our skills and interests are necessarily passed directly down the line. A couple I know are both adventurers who love nothing more than abseiling and windsurďŹ ng, yet their lookalike teenagers show little interest in the outdoors or sports at all. Another is very musically orientated, yet their offspring show more interest in mathematics and science than they do in a guitar or piano. What they are starting to discover though is that as their children are getting older, those inherited interests are actually starting to show through, albeit in slightly different ways. Simon Killeen is a seventh generation winemaker born and raised in Rutherglen who grew up in the business but could have veered in a totally different direction, until an interest in chemistry drew him back towards winemaking. But he’s doing it his own way, taking pride in being a small winery making special wines and crediting the growers and the quality fruit of their fruit for their contribution to his success. He describes his Glenrowan
with Anita McPherson
Old Vine Shiraz as elegant, and I’m not going to argue about that. It’s certainly aromatic; bright and punchy with peppery spice and plum fruit. There are dark fruits in the avour but this medium bodied wine remains perky and savoury, beautifully balanced with a gentle undercurrent of French oak goodness. Both the winemaker and grower can justiďŹ ably take a bow. And maybe just a nod to their ancestors.

This Day in History 1945 ANOTHER war is over. There has been a public welcome to prisoners of war, in St Patrick's Hall, on the 17th and when a train loaded with over 100 troops liberated from the Japanese passed through the North East on the 19th, crowds gathered at every station. At Wangaratta, the train slowed down and passed through the station at walking pace so that Major W Morrison could be welcomed.
with Naturopaths Belinda McPherson and Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) â—† JUST CHAI IT: Chai tea is great if you are recovering from an infection, have low energy, or are a mother of a newborn.
Chai it out for winter
CHAI is one of my favourite herbal tonics for winter, beneďŹ ting mothers of newborns, those recovering from infection, anyone with low energy and even children. Unfortunately this chai is not synonymous with chai latte from your local cafĂŠ – sorry! From now on, drink chai latte and coffee for fun, but if you want a recovery tonic, an energy tonic or a mood boost for winter then this chai is for you. Chai can be made with black tea as a base, or a caffeine free version from rooibos or dandelion to give a more nourishing effect to the digestion and nervous system. I have been making and drinking a
rooibos/dandi chai for years and have just discovered how fabulous it is for increasing milk supply, iron levels and calming for mothers of small children. It is becoming a frequent yer in my slow cooker for those “really-hard-to-leavethe-house mornings. Both dandelion and rooibos are bitter and cooling, so they calm hot emotions like anger, rage or jealousy (I recently shared a large cup with my three year old after an hour in Centrelink). Newborn mothers and those recovering from illness need warmth so this recipe uses just a little dandelion or rooibos, served with warm spices like ginger and cardamom.
If your appetite is low use more ginger and cardamom. Makes one cup: seeds of three pods cardamom, peeled chunk fresh ginger, peeled and ďŹ nely chopped 1â „4 teaspoon fennel seeds, 1â „2 cup water, 1 teaspoon rooibos or 1â „2 teaspoon dandelion root, 1â „2 cup milk honey to taste. Place all ingredients in a pot with ½ cup of water. Bring to the boil. Simmer and add ½ cup milk and honey. Simmer for 5-10 min. Pour through a tea strainer into a cup and enjoy. Can’t be bothered with all those ingredients? Pop into the clinic and try my Rooibos Chai from our “Picked to a Teaâ€? range.

Bruce is still rockin’ on From page 1
“My brother (Malcolm) was playing guitar in bands so I was influenced greatly by that. Malcolm (Shake) also had a great record collection of Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Free etc that I used to listen to and try to imitate.” Bruce fulfilled a dream when he became a full-time musician from 1998 to 2001 before returning to his trade and he now manages an engineering metals warehouse (Vulcan) in Albury, but music remained his passion, as did performing. He has performed solo and in bands such as Traction, Dark Horse, Gypsy, Sharyn Bilston Trio, Sabotage, Seyms Big, The Sons Of Motherless Goats, The Recycled String Band, Red Cellar Door and also Sly Dog and The Howlers who recently performed at the Vine Hotel at the Winter Blues Extravaganza. Often it is with the same seasoned musicians who share similar taste in music or are just plain friends. “I feel very privileged to have been given
the opportunity to be able to play with a very high standard of musicians,” Bruce said. “I love playing guitar and singing. I enjoy the mateship with other performers and have always found music to provide amazing connections with people that I would not normally get the chance to meet. “Performing also provides a great outlet for any pent up frustrations. “We are good mates outside of the band (Sly Dog and The Howlers) as we have other interests in common such as watching other musicians play and motorcycles.” Sly Dog and The Howlers for instance, who play blues, rock, soul, jazz and some country styled tunes depending on their mood and the vibe of the audience, began as the ‘house band” for the Cumberoona paddle steamer. “I had been working with Chris Seymour (saxophone) for many years in The Sons of Motherless Goats,” said Bruce.. “We had seen Bryan (Rolie) Dwyer and Chris (Christo) Mangan working in other bands and knew they were very skilled
musos so I got in touch with them about doing the Cumberoona gig. “Initially thinking we were just needed for one or two fill-in jobs, it turned into a much bigger project from there. “The skipper and crew of the Cumberoona were very welcoming and made the trips enjoyable.” While Bruce at 60 years of age is happy with his present work/music balance his dream gig would be at one of the amazing festivals that are held in so many places around the world. “I guess I would see something like the Byron Bay Blues Festival as a premium gig for us,” he said. “They have first rate, world class acts there every year. “I guess I’ve just come up with the reason we might not get a gig there… but you can dream!” To experience some ageless rock and blues don’t miss The Sons Of Motherless Goats playing at the SS & A Club Albury on September 7.

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au â—† THREE, TWO, ONE: St Patrick's Primary School foundation students prepare their rockets for lift off.
Houston has lift off at St Pat’s HOUSTON, we have lift off. It was all systems go at St Patrick’s Primary School in Wangaratta last Wednesday when students gathered to witness the launching of rockets they had created in their science classes. Rocket engineers from grades one, two and foundation class waited their turns patiently to test out their brilliant rockets in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the successful lunar landing of the Apollo 11 mission - the theme of this year’s National Science Week. The foundation students had worked closely with science teacher Katie Pallot to create rockets of wonderful different colours that would be propelled into the air (and perhaps even into space) when the students blew air into straws that were placed inside their rockets. Meanwhile, the grade one and two students worked in pairs to create marvellous moonbound bottle-top rockets that would shoot off into the air when they placed effervescent tablets into the water within the rocket’s body - a combination that would create a pressurised chemical reaction, launching the rocket as carbon dioxide gas forced its way out of the bottle top. And last but not least, grade six science leaders Sarah Del Mastro and Amelia Sharp had collaborated with teacher Paul Lynch to craft foam rockets that would be blasted into the air via a pressurised pump of Mr Lynch’s creation. The excitement was palpable as the crowd waited with baited breath to watch the foundation students form a line and ready their rockets. The countdown began - three, two, one...and the students blew into their straws launching their rockets. Onlookers cheered as the rockets launched high into the air and landed safely on the ground, ready to be launched another day.
Next up, the grade one and two students prepared their rockets for launch. They each placed their effervescent tablets into the water within the rocket, gave the rocket a shake, and made a dash to safety as the rockets rumbled within. Nail biting seconds ticked by, as no-one quite knew what to expect next. Would the rockets launch? How high would they go? Another few moments went by and then ‘pow’ the ďŹ rst rocket shot upward with a ďŹ zz and a bang...and then another...and another. Some controlled calamity ensued - for as we all know, science doesn’t always go to plan - and some of the rockets shot off in every direction but up, causing the crowd to burst with laughter and cheers. Then it was time for the big one - the Grade six science leader’s air-pressure propelled foam rocket. Sarah and Amelia used their muscles to pump air into the launch pad, released the valve and ‘woosh’ the rocket ew high and far into the air, completing the series of very successful launch missions. Throughout the week, the students learned a great deal about rockets, the moon landing, and the forces of push and pull - a cornerstone of physics. Congratulations students and teachers, it was a wonderful afternoon of experiments and I feel very lucky to have been invited. Well done.
