Challenge accepted for birdmen

THE English-born poet, John Keats (1795-1821), perhaps summed it up best in his poem On the Grasshopper and the Cricket (later renamed The Poetry of Earth) when he wrote: ‘the poetry of earth is never dead’. He was referring to the way that nature provides a symphony of music which never ceases, regardless of the season. Simply explained; Keats was referring to the summer when the songbirds are silent in the heat, the grasshoppers take over, just as the crickets break the quiet of a winter’s evening when so many others are hidden away. He doesn’t mention spring or autumn, but for those who have spent any time outside in the past few weeks, you’ll be well aware of just how many different songs and symphonies are being trilled in our beautiful North East region at the moment. And the timing couldn’t be better with one of Australia’s biggest citizen science projects - the Aussie Backyard Bird Count - being held this week. For local biologists, Chris Tzaros and Ian Davidson who have been writing a weekly article about a bird species in the Wangaratta Chronicle for the last six months, their ‘counts’ extend outside just this one week in the year and they’re currently in a fierce challenge with each other and another keen ‘twitcher’ to identify and record 100 birds in 100 days. “For the past six months, Ian, myself and Doug Robinson have been having a 100 birds in 100 days challenge, where we’re trying to record 100 species on our respective properties in 100 days,” Chris explained. “We started it when COVID hit and we didn’t really expect to get anywhere near 100 birds,” Ian added. “But in the first 100 days Chris got about 90, Doug around 80 and I came in with just over 70.” When COVID and the lockdowns continued, Chris, Ian and Doug decided to go for another 100 days - which ends at the end of October. “We’ve already got more than last time and we haven’t identified all the same species either,” Ian said. “Chris already has more than 110, Doug has just cracked 100 and I’m in the 80s but I’m coming home with a late charge.

Sneaky snakes WITH the warmer weather and recent rainfall snake bite season has well and truly begun early this year. The speed in which dogs will show clinical signs can vary signiďŹ cantly - some pets may vomit and salivate within a number of hours whilst others can be paralysed and close to death within minutes. It is important to familiarise yourself with signs of snake bite and if you are at all suspicious your pet may have been bitten to contact your vet immediately. Signs to watch for in dogs include vomiting, salivation, trembling, sudden collapse and increased respiratory rate. Animals can progress to show paralysis and severe trouble breathing. Some dogs will have initial symptoms but then appear to recover before suffering major collapse. In cats clinical signs are often seen up to twelve to twenty four hours after exposure. A garden full of wildlife provides a natural beauty to your backyard and what many people don’t realise is that our home is their home as well. Many of our native birds rely on our gardens and parks for their survival. The key to designing a bird-friendly garden is to have plants at different heights to create a multi-layered habitat. Start with ground covers, small and medium-sized shrubs (for density) and, where possible, add trees that will provide year-round food and shelter for many different species. %PO U GPSHFU UP UBLF JOUP BDDPVOU

If you can’t get Indigenous plants, general natives are the next best thing. SpeciďŹ cally, here are the types of plants you should get based on the type of birds you are trying to attract (don’t forget to look for the indigenous versions). Seed-eaters (like ďŹ nches) generally like dense vegetation to nest, forage and shelter in.
Plant grasses next to thick shrubs for an optimal environment. Examples of shrubs and grasses include Tea-tree, Acacia (Wattle), Lomandra, Themeda (Kangaroo grass) and Poa (Tussock grass). Honeyeaters (like spinebills) rely on dense vegetation to nest in, as well as to hide from larger, aggressive or carnivorous birds. However, they feed on the nectar of shrubs and trees, so both types of vegetation need to be accounted for. Examples of small shrubs include: Acacia (Wattle), Leptospermum, Kunzea and Tea-trees.

YOUR HEALTH Stanton and Killeen Moodemere Shiraz 2017
EACH year as daylight savings arrives there are always those who complain about everything from their curtains fading to their circadian rhythm being affected. I’ve never quite understood what the problem is, as while it may feel a little harder to get up the first morning, we’re only talking about an hour and not travelling into another time zone. It’s also only what the clock says, so unless you work to a strict timetable, there’s no reason not to rise and shine when you like, eat when you’re hungry and sleep when tired - regardless of the hour. Maybe I’m being selfish but I simply enjoy the longer days and warmer weather which comes when summer arrives, putting being outdoors and cooking on the barbecue back on the menu. A lamb steak wouldn’t taste nearly as good if cooked outside and I like it with a generous glass of Stanton and Killeen Moodemere Shiraz. The medium bodied red has a deep purple red colour and inviting aromas of red berry, maybe raspberry, with the lift of white pepper spice. It has a rich quality - with quite

a cherry fruit flavour and some vanilla - with a grippy dryness around the mouth from the tannins. Paired with the richness and fattiness of the barbecued lamb flesh it makes a nice yin and yang, although it would also be great with snags and steak. I’m so glad I can crack it open an hour earlier.

This Day in History, 1880 THE first Rutherglen Show was held, and it rained. The Wangaratta Band was in attendance, and must have felt quite at home - it always rained, they used to say, for the Wangaratta Show and only by moving the date could they escape it. Shows at Rutherglen began in 1878, but it was not until the Rutherglen Agricultural and Horticultural Society was started, with Donald Brown as the secretary, that shows as we know them today, were staged. In spite of the rain for the inaugural Rutherglen Show, it was a great success.
How I keep keep myself well MANY of my clients ask what I do to keep myself healthy, so here it is: When I’m most in balance I like to get up earlier than the kids to do some stretches and then go for a short run - I don’t run far but even a 10-20 minute run makes such a big difference to my day. If I don’t start my day with some exercise at least three times each week I get sluggish and my metabolism decreases. Usually before I go out the door I have a glass of water with lemon juice in it. Lemon juice is a brilliant liver cleanser first thing in the morning and it also helps bile production. Water is super important to me as a ‘kidney lymphatic’ iris constitution - basically that means that I have greenish eyes and that the kidneys are my ‘primary nurture point’. If I don’t have enough water throughout my day or if I don’t wear a hat in the sun I can easily get a headache. My sinuses are another of my ‘nurture points’ so breathing clearly is important to me. If you aren’t sure, a ‘nurture point’ is an area, organ or body system that we need to pay a bit more attention to.
When I first learnt Iridology back in 1995 we called these areas ‘weaknesses’ but my Iridology mentor, Toni Miller, taught me that words can be medicine and using positive words is ever so important. I would much rather have a ‘nurture point’ than a ‘weakness’. Every single one of us has some nurture points; getting to know them and how to care for them is the key. I have a tendency to a fermented gut so starting my day with carbohydrates is the worst way for me. To have sustained energy till lunch time I need protein. My two preferred breakfasts are either an omelette or natural Greek yoghurt with nuts. I don’t need anything else till about midday when I start my day like this and it keeps me regular as well. Just before breakfast I usually have a multi vitamin - my preferred one is ‘Male Essentials’ by Metagenics. It’s a high quality multivitamin and mineral supplement which has the highest quality and best mix of nutrients among many that I have compared and tried. Even though I try to have mostly healthy
food, I still don’t believe that I can get everything I need for my busy life from food. Apple cider vinegar is also a way that I help my gut system keep healthy and my digestion optimum. Try a tablespoon full with water before your main meal. Pre-COVID, there wasn’t a lot of time to think of snacking but if I need something I usually grab a piece of fruit or if I’m tired a square of good quality dark chocolate. A healthy family dinner usually consists of fish and veggies or curry and rice. If it’s a special day we’ll have a cake or treats afterwards. I am definitely not a puritan and live in the real world and though I love keeping healthy and want my kids to do the same we try to have a 80/15/5 rule, which I will cover in a later column. One of the last things I love to do at the end of the night is sit on the couch with a hot cup of herbal tea and a square (or two or three) of dark chocolate. To keep yourself healthy, it’s important to be informed and your eyes and other body parts (eg: tongue) can give you this wonderful information. Have an awesome and healthy day.

“It’s been a real eye-opener that we’ve been able to identify between 70-100 species around Wangaratta in only three months and we haven’t had to travel far to ďŹ nd them; the variety is just fascinating.â€? A self-employed wildlife ecologist and photographer, Chris conducts research and monitoring into native wildlife including threatened species, habitat protection and restoration and community education through his business Birds, Bush and Beyond. “My company name reects the primary nature of my work, which is bird conservation and research, but as an ecologist I also get involved in other projects such as habitat restoration,
reptile and mammal programs,â€? he said. “The work that I do with respect to monitoring bird populations, is a means of documenting the health and condition of our broader environment. “Healthy bird communities usually means a well-functioning and healthy environment, but where our monitoring records that bird communities are highly simpliďŹ ed and even where some species are dropping out of the environment, “it suggests there are factors at play that are reducing the overall quality and condition of the landscape, usually suggesting that our human activities are unsustainable and damaging to the natural environment. “I’ve been interested in birds
since I was a young kid - I remember being fascinated by them and I spent a lot of time in local bushland areas around Bendigo where I grew up observing them and other wildlife in my parents’ garden. Moving to Wangaratta from the hustle and bustle of Melbourne three years ago, Chris said he and his wife wanted some property in the bush to protect as wildlife habitat and make their own contribution to conservation, as well as enjoying the peace and tranquillity of the country. “I left my employment in Melbourne to start my own business as an independent wildlife ecologist and having been involved in a number of conservation projects in the region and across
the border into southern NSW, Wangaratta made sense as a good central location for us, he said. “Our son, Merlin (11), is really into reptiles so the property we purchased on the edge of the Warbies certainly interested him as well. “Ian has been a friend for many years and he was instrumental in our decision to settle here and we collaborate on various monitoring projects, combining our skills and knowledge. If you’d like to start your own backyard bird challenge count against family members or friends it isn’t difficult once you learn the basics and as Ian said, ‘it just takes practice’. “Start with your backyard or a bit of bushland nearby and give
yourself a regular 20 minute block where you can listen and record how many birds you see. “Start off by recording the common species you can identify like magpies and kookaburras and try and remember their calls. “Once you have a library of knowledge, you can add identifying the calls and getting binoculars to your birdwatching kit, but you don’t have to do that right away. “On average, you could expect to see six to 10 birds in that 20 minute period, above 10 is pretty good, 15 is very good and if you get into the 20s, then that’s excellent, my record is 29 which is a huge number. According to Chris and Ian, the most common species in

Chris said. “I’d like to see Regent Honeyeaters more often, like I once did, as they’re critically endangered,â€? Yellowbelly biting at Lake Nillahcootie WIDESPREAD rain late last week has kept many anglers away from high and often flooding rivers and seen them focus on lakes. As mentioned in last week’s report, springs floods are excellent for the long term health of the rivers. This week we have a stand out fishery, and that is Lake Nillahcootie. The fishing is red hot over there at the moment. Last Monday evening, just fishing from the bank using worms for bait I managed to catch three carp, three yellowbelly and three Murray cod. Between 4pm and 6.30pm I caught the three carp, and in the hour between 6.30pm and 7.30pm I caught everything else. The fishing was just nuts! The biggest yellowbelly was 32cm, and the biggest cod was 57cm which was released as per the current closed season regulations. I went back over on Wednesday afternoon, this time fishing from my kayak where I managed to catch three yellowbelly. All fish were trolled on a Tubby Native Minnow and the biggest was 32cm. My Dad Terry Alexander went over there with Shane Orr on Thursday and they caught quite a few yellowbelly and carp, all caught using worms as bait with the biggest yellowbelly being 47cm. On Friday afternoon I went to Lake Moodemere where I found the fishing was very slow. I fished from 3pm to 6pm before getting washed out. In those three hours I never had a single bite.

The inventions of a revolution
◆ NICE CATCH: Wangaratta angler Terry Alexander with a lovely Lake Nillahcootie yellowbelly caught on worms last Thursday morning and destined for the filleting knife.
I have had reports of a few carp and a couple of yellowbelly being caught there though. While it might be easy for me to say that the fish weren’t biting, if it wasn’t for the carp I would have caught nothing at Lake Nillahcootie in that same time frame as the fish didn’t come on the bite until after 6.30pm over there. So perhaps Lake Moodemere is worth another try, but later in the evening.
THE Industrial Revolution marked a period of development in the latter half of the 18th century that transformed largely rural, agrarian societies in Europe and America into industrialized, urban ones. Goods that had once been painstakingly crafted by hand started to be produced in mass quantities by machines in factories, thanks to the introduction of new machines and techniques in textiles, iron making and other industries. This week, I thought we’d take a look at some of the machines invented during this period that changed the course of history. The Watt Steam Engine When James Watt created the first reliable steam engine in 1775 his invention would literally change the world. His innovation blew the older less efficient models, like the Newcomen engine, out of the water. James’ innovation of adding a separate condenser significantly improved steam engine efficiency, especially latent heat losses. His new engine would prove very popular and would wind up installed in mines and factories across the world. It was hands down, one of the
greatest inventions of the Industrial Revolution. The Bessemer process The Bessemer Process was the world’s first inexpensive process for mass production of steel from molten pig iron. This would also prove to be one of the greatest inventions of the Industrial Revolution. It is noted for its removal of impurities from the iron via oxidation as air is blown through the molten metal. Oxidation also helps raise the temperature of the iron mass to keep it molten for longer. The process is named after its inventor Henry Bessemer who patented the technique in 1856. The ability to mass-produce highquality steel and iron allowed a literal boom in the use of them in many other aspects of the revolution. Portland Cement Joseph Aspdin was a bricklayer turned builder who, in 1824, devised and patented a chemical process for making Portland Cement. This one invention from the Industrial Revolution has been one of the most important of all time for the construction industry. His process involved sintering a mixture of clay and limestone to around 1400-degrees Celcius.

This then needed to be ground into a fine powder only to be later mixed with sand and gravel to make concrete. The first modern battery Although there is evidence of early batteries from the Parthian Empire around 2000 years ago, the first true modern electric battery was invented in 1800. This world-first was the brainchild of one Alessandro Volta with the development of his voltaic pile. Mass production of the world’s first battery began in 1802 by William Cruickshank. Volta’s invention sparked a great amount of scientific excitement around the world which would lead to the eventual development of the field of electrochemistry. Telegraph communications The internet of it’s age, the Telegraph was one other of the greatest inventions of the Industrial Revolution. Created in the early 1800s it changed communication forever. Thanks to this technology, nearinstant communication became possible initially across the country and eventually across the globe. This enabled people to stay in contact and become aware of wider geopolitical events much more easily.
