By KYLIE WILSON THEY have not yet reached their teenage years, but Cathedral College Wangaratta year six students Will Erickson, Harvey Correll and Jack Weir have come to national attention for an unusual fundraiser they organised and participated in earlier this year. The trio, following in the footsteps of high profile unicyclists/fundraisers like Samuel Johnson and Ed Pratt, decided to use their unicycling skills for a good cause by riding between Myrtleford and Bright last March in a project dubbed ‘Unicycle 4 Sight’. The idea grew from Will and Harvey hanging out together after school and wanting to find a challenge after Harvey got a unicycle. Will soon got one as well, and soon all three were regularly riding and practising their skills.

Finances part of a bigger picture AUSSIE households spend almost as much on recreation as they do on food, and overall satisfaction is judged by more than just ‘hard-edged ďŹ nancials’, recently released Commonwealth Bank data shows. While income, wealth, jobs and housing are important to the average Aussie household, health, work-life balance, education, social connections and civic engagement are also important. People spend 17 per cent of their money on recreation and just over 20 per cent on food, which “underlies the relatively comfortable positionâ€? Aussie households ďŹ nd themselves in, CBA chief economist Michael Blythe said after the release of Commonwealth Bank’s new Household Satisfaction Index (HSI) recently. Since the data collection started in September 2015, the HSI slowly improved up to early 2017, but it’s tracked sideway since, Mr Blythe said. “Australian households tend to be of the ‘glass half-full’ variety when assessing their level of satisfaction,â€? he said. “Areas with low satisfaction scores include civic engagement, environment and education, so policies targeting improvement in those areas would help.â€? Debt high, households adapting Households account for the majority of Australian debt and it’s currently at a record high relative to income and the size of the economy. “It’s also at the top-end of the range on any global comparison,â€? Mr Blythe said.
High debt at a time of weak income growth is a risk to economic activity. But, consumer spending is also a source of stability in the Australian economy, and is one of the least variable components of gross domestic product (GDP) growth, Mr Blythe explained. “A reduction in the household savings rate over the past few years, for example, has allowed consumer spending to defy the weakness in household income growth, he said. According to the data, the average household: t )BT QFPQMF t 5IF AQSPEVDUJWF HSPVQ UIBU drives economic activity and generates income is aged beUXFFO BOE ZFBST t 5IF OVNCFS PG "VTTJFT BHFE over 65 now exceeds those aged less than 18 years. t 5IF BWFSBHF IPVTFIPME IBT income of $90,000 and pays tax PG B ZFBS t 4QFOEJOH FYDMVEJOH SFOU and mortgage payments, is around $57,000 a year.

What’s your favourite festive sound? Christmas songs, festive social gatherings and the excited chatter of children. The pleasure of hearing and taking part in conversations are what many take for granted. It’s time to take action and be part of the conversation this festive season.
with Mandi McDonald ("3%&/*/( 41&$*"-*45 â—† THRIVING: Soil type and acidity, sunshine, position and the characteristics of the plant itself are all things to consider when choosing plants for your garden.
Select right plant, right place 4&-&$5*/( UIF SJHIU QMBOU GPS UIF right location is very important. Given our seasons can be quite harsh, trying to plant something where it’s not used to or happy growing is bound to end in disappointment. 5IFSF BSF NBOZ UIJOHT UP DPOTJEFS when making plant selection. Can the plant tolerate temperatures varying between below zero and BCPWF Does it need sun or shade, well drained or wet soil? Sandy, rocky, clay? Neutral or acidic soil? It may seem overwhelming when put like this but following a few simple rules will ensure more successes than disappointments. Soil type and PH are probably the most important place to start. You can easily test the soil to determine the ph using a fairly inexpensive ph testing kit or come down to the nursery and we can do this for you. Gypsum and compost are certainly beneďŹ cial with clay soils.
Lots of organic matter added to sandy soil will help with water retention and give the soil more ‘body’. If the soil is too alkaline most plants will not thrive as they are unable to photosynthesise (absorb nutrients from the environment and water) and will show yellowing leaves and little growth. Some plants thrive in acidic soils but others will not so it certainly worth getting this tested if you are having problems. Many plants will happily grow in neutral ph soil. Aspect is the next thing to think about. Sun, shade or half and half? A lot of plant tags will say ‘full sun’ - with our very hot summers this does not mean the plant needs to be in sun all day. Five to six hours of full sun is usually sufficient. Shade loving plants can often tolerate some morning sun but need pro-
tection from the hot afternoon sun. 5IFSF BSF B GFX QMBOUT UIBU XJMM happily tolerate quite shady areas. Frost is a factor in our area. 5IFSF BSF QMBOUT UIBU UISJWF JO DPME winters but many can succumb to frosty nights which is a challenge. Some plants are more susceptible when they are young but as they mature will be able to tolerate frost so a few years of covering things from the frost may be required. 5IF PUIFS FYUSFNF PG GSPTU EBNBHF is sunburn. Our summers are certainly tough on the garden and it is important to protect more delicate or young plants from heat scorch. Keeping well watered and mulched will also help. Gardening in our area is certainly a challenge, but if you choose the right plant for the right location, we can all enjoy beautiful and productive gardens. Happy gardening.

FEATURE STORY
What to expect when your dog is expecting PREPARING for your dog’s impending puppies can be an exciting time. It is helpful to be aware of potential problems and what to expect at each stage. When breeding your dog, take note of the breeding date so that you know when she is likely to whelp (give birth). The gestation (pregnancy) period of dogs is on average 63 days, but can range from 58 to 68 days. After 35 days of pregnancy the mother’s energy requirements will start to increase. The best diet for her is puppy food. This is already balanced and doesn’t require any supplementation. Around 45 days your dog can be examined by a vet and x-rays taken to determine how many puppies to expect. Ultrasound can confirm pregnancy earlier than this but it is more difficult to count puppies this way. During the first stage of labour, uterine contractions begin and your dog will appear restless and may pace, dig, tremble or pant. This lasts 6 to 12 hours and
with By Linda Bradbury, VETERINARIAN ends when the cervix has fully dilated. During the second and third stages of labour the puppies are born. Each puppy is born covered in a membrane which the mother will generally bite or lick away. If she doesn’t do this quickly, you will need to intervene so that the puppy doesn’t suffocate. Use a clean towel to rub away the membranes, especially from the puppy’s nose and mouth. The umbilical cord may be cut with clean scissors and tied in a knot about 2cm from the pup. There is usually one pup born every 45 to 60 minutes, after 1030 minutes of hard straining. Sometimes there may be a break of up to two hours between puppies. Seek veterinary attention if the mother is straining for over an hour without producing a pup, or takes a break for longer than two hours and you know there are more pups inside, or is in severe pain, or gestation goes for longer than 70 days.

◆ PROUD MOMENT: Jack Weir, Harvey Connell and Will Erickson after receiving their Fred Hollows Humanity Award certificates last week.
United on unicycles
It was not long before they began planning the fundraising idea, involving many in the school and local business community, even getting a few unicycling tips from Samuel Johnson himself. They were supported by West End Cycles, as well as their year six classmates who made and wore badges and supported them in other ways, including being their ride support crew and cheering them along. The event itself took them seven hours with about two hours of pitstops along the way, and raised around $5000 for the Fred Hollows Foundation. This money in turn allowed for a cataract surgeon to be trained in Kenya. “We believe people should be able to see,” Will said, while Jack added that he found the work of Fred Hollows and the foundation to be “inspirational”. Their hard work did not go unnoticed, with their teacher, Kerrylee Bonacci, nominating them for a Fred Hollows Humanity Award, for which they received the certificates at a ceremony in Melbourne this month attended by former Victorian Premier John Brumby.
Swenrick build Victoria wide
The awards recognise year six students who follow in the footsteps of Fred Hollows by making a positive difference in their community. Kerrylee said she was very proud of the boys for what they had accomplished. “Personally, I think it is phenomenal that three twelve-year olds could not only have the vision for such a feat, but that they also accomplished this with such passion and commitment, and therefore I had no hesitation in nominating them for the ‘Fred Hollows Humanity Award,’” she said. “We as a school are certainly very proud of their efforts and the way in which they have endeavoured to do good in the world. “The initiative of three boys from Cathedral College in Wangaratta will certainly have a domino effect far beyond their school and their community, when the proceeds of their phenomenal feat go to benefit those overseas. “As a school community we could not be prouder of their efforts.” Kerrylee said the project had a positive impact not only on the boys, but
on the school as a whole. “Whilst it was the initiative of Will, Harvey and Jack, it generated a ripple effect possibly further than the boys had ever envisaged,” she said. “There is always a great sense of hope generated when young people decide to contribute in the ways these boys did. “Their endeavour generated a great feeling of comradery and possibility.” Harvey said that the support received by their community had been “really good”. Jack added that he felt it was important to give back to the community. “If you do one good deed, someone else might continue that deed,” he said. “I’m pretty sure that’s what humanity means.” All three said they were proud to receive their recent award. The boys are keen to keep their good work going, with the three of them hoping to tackle more ambitious fundraising unicycle rides between Mt Buffalo and Bright, or even Wangaratta to Melbourne.

◆ CATCHING CARP: Will Peasley with one of the carp he caught at the Winton Wetlands’ carp muster on Sunday morning.
THERE was a good turnout to the Winton Wetlands’ carp muster on Sunday morning. Not a large number of fish were caught however there were a few, with the largest one being 69cm long and 4.4kg, landed by Adam Valentine. Yellowbelly reports continue to come in thick and fast at the moment with lakes Hume, Nillahcootie and Eildon all producing either good fish, or good numbers of fish. Cliff Karnatz is one of the many anglers enjoying the fantastic yellowbelly fishing on offer at Lake Hume at the moment, catching decent size fish on a consistent basis.
Check out Cliff’s YouTube channel simply titled ‘Cliff Karnatz’ to see some of the monsters that he and his friends have been catching. With the large popular lakes fishing so well at the moment, don’t overlook the smaller waterways. Lake Sambell in Beechworth, Allan’s Flat Waterhole near Yackandandah, Lake King in Rutherglen and Lake Anderson in Chiltern have all been producing very good yellowbelly fishing lately as well. The trout streams enjoyed the recent flush of fresh water following last week’s rain and thunderstorms, but have since receded to their low levels. The trout became quite active im-
mediately after the rainfall. It has not been a great spring for trout fishing in the streams however there have been pockets of good fishing around. I had a great fly fishing session in a tributary of the Ovens River last week, however the water is noticeably warmer and I suspect that it will only be a matter of time before the water is too warm and the trout feeding slows right down. Just as the trout fishing starts to slow down, the Murray cod season is almost upon us. Now is the time to start getting you Murray cod gear organised because cod opening is only a little over one week away.

◆ LITTLE CHANGES: Use multigrain or wholemeal bread in place of white bread to kickstart your healthy eating regime.
The key to dietary change DIETARY changes are some of the hardest habits to break. Commonly, we see clients change everything in their diet and lifestyle only to find after a few weeks it all becomes too hard and they revert back to old habits. Try making sustainable lifelong changes to your diet through swapping commonly consumed foods, below are some examples. White bread: try multigrain or whole meal breads. White bread is laden with refined carbohydrates that if not burnt up store as fat in our bodies. This high glycemic index food burns up quickly in our body resulting in a spike in blood sugar leaving you looking for more to eat and on a roller coaster of ups and downs of energy and moods. Sandwich meats: deli meats such as
salami, devon etc are highly processed with chemicals and preservatives. Try poached chicken fillets, tuna, salmon, prawns, tofu, left over meats. This will give you a great protein source at lunch, keeping you feeling fuller for longer, increasing concentration and energy as well. Low fat products: low fat products have been stripped of nutritional value and then synthetically replaced those vitamins and minerals. Fat soluble vitamins such as Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Vitamin A and Omega 3’s all need healthy dietary fats to aid in absorption. Healthy fats include coconut oil, olive oil, avocado, nuts, seeds, cold water fish, rice bran oil. Fat soluble vitamins are important for bone health, immune function, antioxidant status and reducing inflammation.
Energy drinks/ soft drinks: Reports of toxicity from energy drink consumption are increasing, particularly among adolescents. Side effects from drinking energy drinks may include palpitations, agitation, tremor and gastrointestinal upset. A recent study from the Medical Journal of Australia showed twenty-one subjects had signs of serious cardiac or neurological toxicity, including hallucinations, seizures, arrhythmias or cardiac ischaemia (reduced blood flow to an organ). At least 128 subjects required hospitalization. For yummy flavoured water try unflavoured mineral water or soda water with little dash of fruit juice, a squeeze of lemon or lime or cut up pieces of mandarins, oranges, cherries and berries in your water bottle.

This Day in History, 1864 THE Endeavour, one of the first riverboats to be built in Wahgunyah, was launched on November 21, 1864. It was broken up and replaced, in the 1870s, by a larger vessel built at Mannum.
Sweet potato hummus IF you’re looking for something to different to entertain your festive season guests, why not try this recipe by Acre Eatery. More recipes like this one, which serves 4-8 people, are available on australiansweetpotatoes.com.au. Method PREHEAT oven to 170°c. Bake the sweet potatoes in the skins loose on the middle oven rack or in a baking dish for 45 minutes to an hour. You should be able to gently squeeze them when they’re done. While the sweet potatoes are cooling, toss all of the other in-
gredients into a food processor (if you’re sensitive to spice, you may want to save the spices for last and add to taste). Pulse for 30 seconds until almost smooth. Once the sweet potatoes have cooled enough to handle, use a knife or your fingers to peel the skin off. Add the sweet potatoes to the food processor. Blend well. Add a little more extra virgin olive oil if too thick and then check seasoning. Serve with sprinkled sesame seeds and sweet potato crisps or lavosh.

AT the risk of sounding like a scrooge, it seems to me that Christmas might come but once a year, but it seems to run for months. It began with decorations on shop shelves in October, plum puddings in supermarkets in November and jingle bells featuring on nearly every television ad break. Then there were programs suggesting what we could serve up on Christmas Day, before the horses had bolted from the gates on Cup Day. It’s no wonder the season can leave many of us feeling a perpetual sense of panic, like the clock is ticking and we’ll never catch up. I’m not the least bit prepared but I know Rosé is likely to be on the table and in the odd gift bag because it’s so well suited to seasonal fare. How to make reverse mentoring work
ORGANISATIONS are turning to younger members of the workforce to mentor more senior colleagues, but it takes training, a safe environment and an openness to new insights to make this relationship work, says recruiting experts Hays. “In the last decade or so, the traditional image of the mentor has been radically turned on its head, says Nick Deligiannis, managing director of Hays in Australia and New Zealand. “In the corporate world, many organisations are encouraging reverse mentoring, where senior-level executives are coached by millennials and young recruits. “This helps foster diversity, skills development, the idea of lifelong learning and an inclusive culture. TECH & SCIENCE
with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ SURREAL: The state of the art 3D printed, fully functional office building in Dubai took a total of 17 days to print at a cost of $140,00 U.S.
3D printed homes - the future of construction I IMAGINE that one day, you might be be able to order food online and, instead of it being delivered to your doorstep, it’ll instead come via your home’s food printer. Your computer will download the requisite molecular structure blueprints for, say, a Big Mac, a KFC Zinger burger, or your favourite Chinese food, print it out and then proceed to cook it. And if the progress being made into molecular printing is any indication - with designer medicines tailor made specifically for your individual physiology coming ever closer - the food you print might very well be customisable to perfection for your individual tastes. While such things are for the more distant future, and might
forever remain in the realm of science fiction, there is no question the 3D printing industry is building an ever more solid foundation for itself. This time, that foundation comes in the form of 3D printed houses. Multiple companies around the world have invested in extremely affordable house construction by way of 3D printing, with the hope of a significant paradigm shift in house construction and architecture - disciplines which haven’t altered significantly since their standardisation during the middle ages. And with some 3D printed house examples costing as little as $4000 U.S with a construction time as little as 24-48 hours around the clock, com-
panies like Texas based Icon are betting on that shift coming soon. Given the low cost of construction, ICON is uniquely placed to aid in solving the global housing crisis, and its partnership with charity organisation New Story aims to do just that. “We’re in the middle of a global housing crisis and making old approaches a little better is not solving the problem. We couldn’t be happier with the team of global investors who are supporting ICON in our belief that the homebuilding industry needs a complete paradigm shift,” stated Jason Ballard, co-founder, and CEO of ICON. Of course, ICON isn’t the only company developing
these technologies. Earlier this year, WASP, the Italian manufacturer behind DeltaWASP 3D printers, unveiled the Crane WASP construction system which is currently being used to print sustainable houses in an Italian village. Prior to this, Aectual, the Dutch design and construction company behind Schiphol Airport’s 3D printed floors, received a capital injection of $1.8 million from three investors for green, sustainable building projects. And in July of this year, a family in Nantes, France made headlines by being the first family to move into a 3D printed home, while in 2016 in Dubai, construction was completed on a 3D printed
office block that looks like something out of an awesome science fiction movie. How are 3d printed homes built? In most cases, 3D printed homes are constructed the same way any 3D printed object is - just on a larger scale. The process is known as additive manufacturing and is basically described as adding thin layer upon thin layer of material, whether the material is plastic, metal, concrete, or more natural materials like wood or bamboo. Machinery is programmed with the plans of the building, and it begins dispensing materials along the defined blueprint and, unlike human workers, can continue working until construction is complete.
But are they safe? Of course, the big question is - are 3D printed structures safe, durable, and comfortably habitable? “3D printing buildings is an interesting emerging technology but is, unfortunately, years if not decades away from being viable,” Carrier Johnson + CULTURE Digital practice manager Casey Mahon told Bisnow.com. “There are a lot of building codes, life safety and constructability issues that still need to be resolved before people actually can inhabit a 3D-printed structure.” As ever, legality and regulation turn the hose of overzealous enthusiasm, so don’t start packing your belongings to move into one of these technological marvels just yet.

Little wonders or children of the corn? CHANNEL CHAT SHOW: Child Genius CHANNEL: SBS TIME: Final, 7.30pm tonight, Wednesday
with Shane Douthie EXPLOITING young children for television ratings is as old as Keith Smith’s Pocket Money Riddle Round Up back in the 1960s or Young Talent Time the following decade. Often it’s about seeing kids more adorable, talented and freakier than our own although most parents (but not all) would soon say they still love their own creation than the rising ‘stars’ on the screen.
The new IQ game show on SBS Child Genius has all the normal twists as any other reality competition show. Varying characters, personalities and abilities each reacting differently to the alien environment and responding in different ways to the pressure. Of course there are the parents and if there is one thing lacking there, like the children, it’s normality.
Child Genius has brought together children from across the country in a contest to find Australia’s brightest child. Presented in association with Australian Mensa and presided over by quizmaster, Dr Susan Carland, Child Genius tests out these budding Einsteins in maths, general knowledge, memory and language. From the mini science buff to the musical prodigy; the ultimate dictionary-reading wordsmith and even a couple of kids whose parents had no idea how clever they were until they sat the Child Genius IQ test. To watch some of these kids perform is startling. In the memory test they each had two hours to remember the order of a deck of 52
THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS: Classic Countdown (ABC, midnight, Thursdays) If your kids are just getting home from the disco, get them to see what real music is about. Rick Stein (SBS, 6pm) Most of these are reruns but Rick’s friendly, honest, simple approach to cooking is refreshing when most modern cooking shows feature recipes a Child Genius wouldn’t understand. The Project (Win, 6.30pm weeknights and Sunday) As commercial news gets more like breakfast television, The Project delivers the right mix of news topics and in the right manner.
◆ QUIZ KIDS: The brightest young minds in Australia go head to head to sort out the winners from the losers, no participation ribbons here.
playing cards and then step out under the spotlight in front of the audience (their parents and the other families) and say them in order. Astonishingly several did a clean sweep, reciting every card in correct order. The spelling test included words I had never heard of and don’t get me started on the anagrams.
Of course there can only be one winner and each night one of the little angels has been booted off which can result in some gut-wrenching scenes but also some moments that restore your faith in children and their parents.
If you missed the series you can probably still see it on SBS Demand or what not and I would suggest sitting down and watching it with your own children. Then you can ask them, what’s wrong with you?
