Hometown help
By STRUAN JONES
◆ BIG PICTURE: Barbara Talbot in front of the iconic Mount Beauty wall piece in the Hospital entrance the Hospital Op Shop helped to fund. PHOTO: Struan Jones
BARBARA Talbot is someone who knows her community. She knows it because she and her hometown, Mount Beauty, have a shared history, along a similar timeline in fact, having been born in Myrtleford in 1947. The town, nestled in the highest corner of the Kiewa Valley, was originally constructed in 1949 by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SEC) to house workers from the Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme. It grew as she did, and she has a pretty good memory of almost everything that has gone on since. Today locals know Barbara as one of the ladies behind the Mount Beauty Hospital Op Shop, a modest yet productive affair on Tawonga Crescent that has raised more than $190,000 since its opening in May 2014 - something she initiated. The Mount Beauty hospital itself has an interesting history. In the early stages of the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme, the SEC financed the construction of the Tawonga District General Hospital, nine kilometres down the Kiewa Valley Highway from Mount Beauty, with a view to provide medical support for its workers and their families. The hospital was located away from the majority of the patients as the Hospital and Charities Board was not prepared to have it within the SEC-controlled area of Mount Beauty. Construction included the removal and re-erection of the ex-military Bonegilla ward from Wodonga while the necessary works were completed that allowed the hospital to operate as a functional unit. Work was completed and the hospital opened in September 1949.

Bovine Pink Eye BOVINE Pink Eye (Infectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis or IBK) may be caused by a number of viral or bacterial organisms but the primary infectious agent is the bacterium Moraxella bovis which is carried in the nasal and ocular secretions of infected and carrier animals. The bacteria attach to the cornea and conjunctiva of the eye by means of pili (small hair like structures) on their surface and cause damage by secreting toxins and haemolysins which erode the cornea and cause ulceration and severe inflammation. Other factors can also predispose the incidence of IBK including: flies (responsible for physical spread of bacteria from animal to animal); ultraviolet light (inflames the conjunctiva and makes it more amenable to bacterial infection); long dry grass (may cause physical damage to the conjunctiva and also physically spreads bacteria); pigmentation (pink eye is more common in non pigmented eyes); dust (irritates the eyes which increases tear production and assists spread via infected tears); overcrowding (more contact and cross infection); and immune status (debilitated and very young animals appear to be prone to IBK. Immunologically naive animals are extremely prone to IBK. Infection is usually first noted by an increased lacrimation (tear production) leading to inflamed, red conjunctiva. This leads to an opaque “diviet” or ulcer on the cornea which eventually causes the entire eye to go cloudy. The ulcer changes from white to pink to yellow and eventually the whole eye may appear a creamy white with a prominent yellow spot in the center. If the eye gets to this stage, permanent blindness often results. Treatment of IBK depends on the
with Andrew Colson, B.V.Sc (Hons) Veterinarian stage the infection is seen. In the early “watery eye” stage topical antibiotic powders, sprays and ointments often halt the disease immediately. Once the cornea has ulcerated more intensive treatment including eye patches, subconjunctival antibiotic injections and third eyelid flaps are required. If there is severe uveitis (inflammation of the internal vascular part of the eyeball) systemic anti-inflammatories may assist but most of these end stage cases of IBK will never completely resolve to become normal eyes. Recently there has been a vaccination released by Coopers Animal Health called Piliguard. The vaccine is administered subcutaneously (under the skin) and it is reported to considerably reduce the incidence and severity of pink eye in cattle. The vaccine can be administered as early as one week of age and there is no meat or milk withholding period. The vaccination works by stimulating the host (cattle) to produce antibodies to the pili on the bacteria’s outer cell wall. The antibodies are secreted in the animal’s tears and make it more difficult for the bacteria to attach to the conjunctiva. Unlike most other vaccinations in cattle, strong immunity is achieved by the administration of a single vaccination. Follow up boosters are required annually. For more information on IBK diagnosis, treatment and vaccinations contact your local vet or visit www.pinkeye.com.au.

with The Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife ◆ ICONIC: There are more than 800 species of eucalypts in Australia.
Eucalypts (Gum Trees)
EUCALYPTS are a defining feature and dominant tree of Australia. There are more than 800 species which have adapted to nearly every environment. The only landscape they are completely absent from is the high alpine areas, though they are scarce in rainforests and in the arid interior of the continent, except where they find refuge along streams and in isolated ranges. Eucalypts come in a great range of shapes and sizes - from tall trees to small shrubs - and provide food and shelter for many native birds, insects and mammals. A few varieties of gum leaves are the only food eaten by koalas. They also provide hollows for cockatoos, parrots, gliders, possums and other buddies to nest and shelter in. It can take up to 100 years or more for eucalypts to develop tree hollows, so avoid removing any from
your place if you can help it. The eucalypt is extremely adaptable. Within species there can be physical adaptations to factors such as soil aspect and proximity to water. For example, E. pseudoglobulus (Gippsland Bluegum) grows 30-40 metres tall in inland forests and yet it can adapt to exposed coastal cliffs by growing mallee-like (with multiple trunks) and small in height. Eucalypts, evolved to cope with Australia’s climate, have adapted to survive through drought and bushfire. Most eucalypts can regenerate from seed after fire. Many eucalypts have woody capsules that protect the seeds during the fire but which open afterwards, releasing their seeds. To find out more about our native flora and fauna, visit the Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife website and sign up to their newsletter which comes out every two months at https://www.fnpw.org.au/

It wasn’t until the gate separating Mount Beauty and Tawonga South was taken down and the former two-storey SEC administration offices were made available that the hospital was moved to the main population centre at Mount Beauty. The new 18-bed hospital in Mount Beauty retained its ‘Tawonga District General Hospital’ name and was opened in April 1961, including upstairs rooms for the health fund office, a physiotherapist, and a visiting dentist from Bright. The old two story timber building is gone now. It was replaced by the modern hospital that stands today, opened by Alpine Health in November 2001. The history is relevant, because according to Barbara, “we’ve always had a hospital in Beauty, and we’ve always had a hospital auxiliary”.
The auxiliary was normally a lady or a small committee responsible for volunteering their time to raise money for the hospital - a small but crucial role. The hospital fete was an annual affair and a big fundraiser which allowed the hospital to purchase necessary or sundry items not normally funded by governments. Today, Barbara and the Hospital Op shop fulfil that role. It’s in her family too - her mother used to make aprons to sell at hospital fetes. While the fetes still occur - now biannually - they aren’t as big an event as they used to be, so the day-to-day running of the Op Shop plays its part in maintaining health services in the Upper Kiewa Valley. In the hospital next door, there’s a list on the wall that records how the money has been spent, because Barbara believes “it’s important for the public to know”. “We’ve bought lifting equipment for the hospital, temple thermometers, we’ve contributed wherever they need we’re dying to put new televisions into

the hospital as well,” she said. “We fund things that the Department of Health don’t fund, so we go for ‘airy fairy’ things, but if they need an operating chair, which they do at the moment, we’re happy to fund that, because it would take ages to go through all the hoops. “That’ll be $10,000 and we’re happy to do that.” The Op Shop is buoyed by a team of volunteers - more than half of which are former nurses who worked in the hospital - so it’s not a bad place for some casual, off the record medical advice, too. The immaculately maintained and pruned gardens around the hospital are also the generous handiwork of the volunteers. It’s something Barbara and the volunteers take a lot of pride in. “We help out people when we can. We’re here to help people,” she said. “We’re continuing on from the hospital auxiliary ladies and we’re a good part of the community.”community.”

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ LAZY HARRY: ‘They’ say necessity is the mother of invention. ‘They’ underestimate the power of laziness.
◆ STREAM SUCCESS: A nicely coloured brown trout caught last week on a Strike Tiger nymph soft plastic in ‘Blue Bottle’ colour.
Fishing remains patchy TOPSY turvy weather has led to topsy turvy fishing across North East Victoria over the last week. I have had some great reports mixed in with the many poor reports that I have received. The Murray cod fishing seems to be the most inconsistent. A lot of people seem to be experiencing fishless outings when targeting Murray cod, and I myself am not exempt, experiencing several fishless trips is recent weeks. Then on Friday evening, Brett Corker went bait fishing in the Ovens River in Wangaratta and landed 11 cod, made up of both Murray cod and trout cod. All of Brett’s cod were caught on cheese. The very next night Brett went out with surface lures and did not catch any fish. On a more positive note, the redfin have really started to bite in local waterways. This is a great time of the year to fish for redfin. The two main lakes on the King and Ovens catchments are Lake William Hovell and Lake Buffalo respectively. I am unsure of whether the roads are open to either of those lakes with the current fires
with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA so make sure you check before you head off. Alternatively, Lake Sambell and Lake Kerford, both in Beechworth, have good numbers of redfin, and so does Lake Hume. For those willing to travel a little bit further, Waranga Basin is also a great redfin lake. I have not had any trout fishing reports other than my own. I fished a small tributary of the Kiewa River for a little while during the week and caught a couple of small brown trout. The water was very low, but cooler than I expected. Sadly many of the local trout streams have been burnt out to some degree. Hopefully we do not get too much rain too quickly on the burnt out areas or we may end up with major streamside destruction.
The virtue of laziness
WHEN I began writing these articles, I did so at home using my installed version of Microsoft Word. This meant I then had to save the article to a USB stick, remember to bring it to work, save the document into our network drive, copy the text into the Indesign document for the Regional Extra, and then layout and design the page containing my article. There were just too many monotonous steps, I told myself. I began using Google Docs, enabling me to save my document in the cloud and have immediate access to it at work. No more USB stick and having to remember to bring it to work. Afterall, remembering inane things is tedious and annoying, and requires faculties better spent contemplating science fiction or epic fantasy through one medium or another. Yes that’s right, I literally live in a fantasy world, but it’s okay - they know me here. The use of cloud based documents was an improvement, but there was still a lot of redundant repetition involved in the whole process. I’ll save the rest of this story for another time, but suffice to say that - aside from the actual writing of this article each week - I’ve managed to whittle the rest of the process down to the pressing of two buttons on a keyboard. And that second button press still irks me. Such is the vice and virtue of an epically lazy person - we’re always looking for the shortest distance between two points. Common wisdom tells us that laziness is a barrier to success, and this is true, for the most part. Left to their own devices, a lazy person takes doing nothing to a whole new level (and it certainly landed me in hot water more times than I’m proud to admit). But something interesting happens when you apply an absolute deadline to an absolute loafer - a kind of immovable object/unstoppable force reaction. The deadline can’t be delayed or ignored, yet it’s the imperative of the indolent to procrastinate as long as is feasible, and exert as little energy as possible. And therein lies the mother of invention. You might be surprised to learn that Charles Darwin was incredibly lazy.
His teachers and parents suffered greatly in their efforts to teach him grammar and math at school as he often fell asleep in the middle of the lesson. In college, he spent a great deal of his time in pubs. Even when he got into science, he didn’t rush things and spent years writing his work. Many other great people were said to be incredibly lazy including Einstein, Newton, Picasso, Mendeleev and others. Nevertheless, they managed to achieve unbelievable success and become well-known all over the world. And there are a few simple reasons for this: Lazy people are very creative When it comes to organising work, no one beats a lazy person. They don’t waste time on unnecessary things and get straight to the point. A lazy employee will always find a way to automate and optimise all the repetitive processes in their jobs, as there is nothing more annoying for a lazy person than regular monotonous work. They are entrepreneurial Often lazy people are very enterprising and look at things in terms of the big picture. They have many ideas and projects as their minds are not filled with excessive thoughts and responsibilities. It is important for them that the work process is not boring and there are guaranteed results at the end. They appreciate the importance of R&R Lazy people understand that the most important thing is to know when to relax, as the more energy people expend, the less they have of it to fulfil big plans. They utilise technology You know that thing that combines several things into one thing, and then completes all of the things 10 times faster? You may not, but chances are the lazy person is all over it like a rash and is already trying to cook up new ways to be lazy. So if you’re a bit lazy, don’t beat yourself up about it. Instead, try playing to your strengths, and recognise that almost every invention and innovation ever devised was dreamt up in a bid to avoid doing something.
