A touch of ‘black girl magic’ THIS is a story about a girl from Harare, Zimbabwe. A young woman who moved to Australia to study. A talented filmmaker and intern doctor who now calls Wangaratta home. It’s about Chido (pronounced Cheedo) Mwat and how she’s infusing her filmmaking dreams with her own special magic. Chido grew up enjoying warm winters and sunny days in Harare, the capital city of Zimbabwe, before moving to Australia eight years ago to study. In Harare, Chido lived in the suburbs with her parents and three siblings, where she said that backyards were ‘definitely more of a thing in Zimbabwean suburbs, than in Australian suburbs’.

By BELINDA HARRISON “Stereotypically, ‘Africa’ is shown to have huts, but we lived in pretty regular housing,” Chido said. The capital was founded in 1890 and named Fort Salisbury after the UK Prime Minister of the time. In 1982, on Zimbabwe’s second anniversary of independence from the United Kingdom, Salisbury was re-named Harare and took its name from the village near Harare Kopje from the chief whose nickname was ‘he who does not sleep’. Chido’s culture and roots are steeped in her blood and it’s those experiences and memories
which add a touch of ‘black girl magic’ to everything she does. “Black girl magic is hard to define, but I think it comes from the fact that for a long time black women have played significant roles in making things happen despite being put down in mainstream society,” Chido said. “For me, black girl magic is not the same as the strong black woman stereotype; it’s the ability to create and connect despite the odds while experiencing the vulnerability and ‘feels’ along the way. “Examples would be Michelle Obama, Issae Rae, Michaela Cole, Janelle Monae and Moonchild Salley - they do stuff that makes people say ‘wow - yup, a black woman did that’.”

Retained foetal membranes in cattle with Ovens and Kiewa Veterinary Hospital impact by decreasing a cow’s appetite, reducing their milk yield, and reducing their fertility. They can also predispose cows to getting infections of the reproductive tract such as metritis which can cause cows to become very unwell. It is best to have a vet assess cows that have retained membranes as they may be systemically unwell and require removal of the membranes as well as medication. This should not be done until at least four days post-calving. If you are concerned that you have cows showing these clinical signs please contact your local vet.
PET CORNER WANGARATTA RSPCA shelter currently has no pets available for adoption. They can still be contacted on (03) 5722 2874.

To snow or not to snow
DINNER Plain Alpine Village is continuing its winter operations. There are 35kms of cross country ski and snowshoe trails to enjoy and in addition to the natural snowfalls, snowmaking machines are in operation to ensure plenty of fun on the newlyopened 75m tobogganing slope. Accommodation, sled dog tours, rental outlets, restaurants and pubs are also operating and welcoming visitors. As of lat Friday Mt Buffalo had a severe lack of snow and offered little toboganning or cross country skiing - but as conditions can change daily please check on the montain’s website for the latest details. For non-snow activities at Mt Buffalo why not take your walking shoes, hat and sunglasses and look out across the ranges into NSW - which is the closest a lot of us will get for a while. Snow chains are required to be carried and drive carefully as there is black ice on the road early and all day at the Cresta corner. While Falls Creek has suspended its ski lift operations, there is still plenty to see and do in the resort. Dining, cross country skiing and touring, tobogganing, sightseeing

A COW is considered to have retained foetal membranes if the placental membranes have not been expelled within 12 hours of calving. There are many different reasons as to why the membranes do not expel properly and these include; abortion, abnormal gestation length (longer or shorter) especially if calving is induced, twins, difficult calving causing the cow to become weak, hypocalcaemia, fatty liver, selenium/ vitamin E deďŹ ciencies and heat stress. The clinical signs that you may notice if a cow has retained foetal membranes include: a strong rotten smell coming from the cows back end, membranes hanging from the vulva, reduced appetite after calving or a cow that looks unwell after calving. Retained foetal membranes themselves are not the biggest problem, however they can have an economic

La Cantina King Valley 2018 Sangiovese
A COMBINATION of getting older and the current pandemic continues to see me developing a greater appreciation for the old ways. Whereas once I would have been excited by the latest food craze, destination or kitchen gadget, now I’m thrilled by things like home composting, repairing stuff and making my own jam. Trying to get maximum flavour out of nothing but natural ingredients seems to be improving my sense of smell and taste and I’m frightened by the notion a contagious illness could take them away. One of the reasons La Cantina wines is popular is that it has no preservatives added and there are a growing number of consumers who are concerned about such things. I just like the idea that the Corsini family continue to make wine using methods passed down through the generations, deciding long ago not to try and fix something that isn’t broken. The 2018 Sangiovese is a medium bodied red that is designed to drink with food, as most wines should be. Its savoury characteristics
with Anita McPherson
with Naturopaths Belinda McPherson (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) immediately shine through, from its deep, russet ruby colour to its earthy and wild berry aroma. The flavour leans more toward plum fruit and there’s plenty of earthy spice in what is a bitey, dry red. That earthiness pairs well with a wide range of foods, including fatty meats and rich braises. This wine may be vegan friendly, but the unctuous Tuscan beef stew we enjoyed it with, definitely is not.

This Day in History, 1981 FLOODS swept Wangaratta, causing residents in low lying areas to move out. The floods were not as disruptive to the city as the floods of ‘74, being more on the scale of the ‘75 floods. However, the rain kept falling and the threat of more flooding was constant. It was said to be Wangaratta’s wettest winter for over 100 years.
◆ HIGH IN IRON: Fruits and vegetables high in iron include green beans, dried fruits, dark leafy greens, podded peas, asparagus, button mushrooms, acorn squash, leeks, dried coconut and raspberries. PHOTO: Shutterstock
Naturopathic approach to low iron
IF you’re dragging your body around, breathless with simple exercise, have brittle hair and nails, pale complexion and poor memory, you may have iron deficiency. A common and simple blood test is the best way to decide if your body has enough iron and this can be ordered by your GP or your naturopath. Many people find out they are iron deficient when they go to the blood bank to donate blood and are not allowed to because their iron levels are too low. Often the symptoms of fatigue or breathlessness, heavy menstrual bleeding or frequent infections will alert the practitioner to authorise a simple pathology test to check iron levels. Correcting iron levels can have a profound effect on how energetic a person feels both mentally and physically. When getting iron through your
daily diet, the best sources are easily digestible red meat, shellfish such as mussels and oysters, dark leafy green vegetables and salads. This is usually enough for a healthy person to meet the body’s needs. If the body has been less than well with illness, infection, heavy menstrual bleeding, dieting, increased stress demands, old age, poor digestion, vegetarians, children with numerous infections, heavy exercise demands or prolonged fatigue, the food sources of iron may not be enough to meet the need of the body. Over the counter iron supplements are a big trap for customers who are iron deficient. Products marketed as iron supplements often have very small amounts of poorly absorbable iron which is well under the amount needed to correct a deficiency and leave you with terrible constipation.
As naturopaths, we are aware of these and avoid them at all costs. At our clinic, we use a range of doses depending on how deficient a patient may be. We often prescribe iron with herbs that help to build the blood. We also spend a lot of time talking to you about how to increase absorption of iron through increasing iron-rich foods and removing foods which impact on iron absorption, or at least having these away from iron therapy. Your iron levels should always be re-assessed within six weeks to three months after starting iron supplementation to assess the success of the treatment as iron excess can be very harmful to your health. So if you need help with your iron, diet or energy, then book in for an appointment with us. We would love to help you get back on track and on top of your game.

Earlier this year, Chido moved to Wangaratta where she works as an intern doctor at Northeast Health Wangaratta; a position which is, at times, a challenging one. “There’s a lot of learning on the job and administration work but it’s very rewarding being able to help the community around me and I really enjoy the culture of my workplace as it’s a small close-knit hospital and I feel supported,” Chido said. But medicine is not her only passion: she has a love of film and has dreamed of being a film director since she was 14 years old. “As a teenager, instead of being out and about during my weekends I’d be at home
watching Conan O’Brien, Jay Leno and Saturday Night Live with my cat and thinking - ‘wow this is something I’d like to do’,” Chido said. “The economic situation for the film industry in Zimbabwe is very challenging - it’s been hard to get ‘on the map’ when compared to other African countries like South Africa and Nigeria. “But people work hard to make dreams a reality and there are quite a few independent content creators and recently we had the first Zimbabwean-made film premiere on Netflix so that’s been really inspiring.” Alongside her studies at high school and university, and prompted by the fact that there were hardly any roles for black women in the media, Chido be-

gan writing her own material for sketch and improvisation comedy, stand-up cabaret, storytelling and web content. “I found myself in a position where I wanted to make my own material for the screen but it’s been a tricky and slow process trying to fit in learning filmmaking with my studies,” she said. Last year, Chido took part in a series of smartphone filmmaking workshops by Cinespace - an organisation who help multicultural creatives bring their voices to the screen. She received ongoing mentorship and made her debut short film - a satirical piece about the impact of racial stereotypes in the media called ‘For Becky’ - in the recent SmartFone Flickfest. “I admire Taika Waititi (‘Jojo
Rabbit’, ‘What We Do in the Shadows’) as I love how his films have quirky elements,” Chiido said. “Seeing what he has created has encouraged me not to shy away from my own quirks. “I’m also a big fan of Jordan Peele (‘Key and Peele’, ‘Get Out’) and admire his ability to make comedy, horror and thrillers and that encourages me to pursue other genres of writing, not just limiting myself to comedy.” Chido will certainly have her work cut out for her over the next few years - hoping to move into General Practice and combine her medical training and her media knowledge to produce health promotional messages and projects. “I also want to make films on a bigger scale to reach broader

audiences through Netflix or Stan or even go on tour with live shows,” she said. “I like to create work that connects audiences and for me that was the biggest appeal to being a creative and creating work; being able to offer peo-
ple a break from reality and offer the chance to become part of a community. “I usually say that my work brings the inner workings of mind centre-stage, fused with fantastical elements, and a touch of black girl magic.”
