Action the adventure

By ANITA McPHERSON LOCAL women are being encouraged to get outside, get active and harness their sense of adventure as part of a weekend of spirited activities tailored especially for women. The Action the Adventure Women’s Adventure Weekend will be held on September 8 and 9 and is a not-for-profit event featuring canoeing, kayaking, rafting, yoga and nature meditation, along with rock climbing, walking, running and cycling. Event convenor Kate Gilson said the idea was to highlight the many adventure options there are available and accessible in North East Victoria, while celebrating wellbeing and connection through a shared adventure. She said she was inspired to create the event as a prelude to the Women’s Adventure film tour being held at the Wangaratta Cinema Centre on September 10.

FEATURE STORY

Your pet’s dental health HOW often do you brush your teeth? Twice a day? What about your dog, how often do they brush their teeth? Or your cat? Unless you have some very impressive animals, (who should deďŹ nitely be social media stars) it’s unlikely you’ll catch your dog or cat maintaining their own pearly whites with a toothbrush. First, the baby teeth! Puppies and kittens have baby or deciduous teeth that come through in the ďŹ rst few weeks of life. These will fall out from 3 months old, and by 6 months most dogs will have all of their permanent, or adult teeth. Important things that your vet will check for is the placement (occlusion) of the teeth. Some dogs and cats with underbites or overbites will have teeth sitting outside of their normal position. If these teeth (baby or adult) are digging into the roof of the mouth, or otherwise impacting other teeth or gums, then they will be painful for you pet and require removal. This is most often seen with canine teeth (the fang like ones). Clipping or cutting these baby teeth is unacceptable, it

with Julia Smith BVSc VETERINARIAN

causes pain and should not be considered. A check up with your vet is required, and a treatment plan involving a tooth extraction under a general anaesthetic may be required. Keeping the adult teeth clean is the next job. Dental dry food, chews, brushing and rinses can all help with your pets oral health, please feel free to check with your vets and vet nurses to find what routine and products work best for you and your pet. Brushing your pet’s teeth is the ‘gold standard’ of care. Daily brushing is most beneficial, three times a week is the suggested minimum frequency for pets with good oral health (more frequently for pets with dental disease). Getting your pet used to brushing early will definitely help, but if you’ve got an older pet, just start slowly and use lots of treats and rewards.

VET CORNER THIS week’s pet of the week at Wangaratta RSPCA is Shiloh, a seven month old male mastiff greyhound cross who is white and tan in colour. To see more animals up for adoption at the Wangaratta RSPCA, visit the shelter in Connell Street or phone (03) 5722 2874.

â—† SENSE OF ADVENTURE: Event convenor Kate Gilson said adventure activities are beneďŹ cial for women’s emotional, physical and mental wellbeing.

Action the adventure

“As I bought my tickets, I thought it would be wonderful to share adventures locally as a good way of not only appreciating the amazing adventures of other women in remote places via the ďŹ lms, but also actioning our own adventure,â€? she said. “I always enjoy sitting watching a ďŹ lm if I have been active in my own endeavours beforehand – and from the initial idea, many local groups and individuals have come on board to share the adventure. “We hope that in addition to enjoying the ďŹ lms we can support women to be adventurous in our beautiful region.â€? Ms Gilson said the program deliberately included a range of women-only events with both “come and tryâ€? opportunities for ďŹ rst-timers and more challenging events for experienced adventurers, like a bushwalk to Mt Cobbler, a well-being and adventure immersion at 15 Mile Creek camp in Greta South, and a Beechworth Chain Gang ladies mountain bike ride. But there are also events open to

everyone which highlight the opportunity for women to participate, like a hike with the Warby Range Bushwalkers. There are also family-friendly activities designed to promote connection and wellbeing between all, such as canoeing at Lake William Hovell in the King Valley, a nature exploration, white water rafting and a barbecue social lunch. Ms Gilson said many women who may be a little hesitant about getting active, or perhaps used to doing things with a partner, need to know there is a great community of women out there enjoying outdoor adventures together. She said getting active was beneďŹ cial for emotional, physical and mental wellbeing. “Since having children it has been more difficult to get out adventuring together (with my husband) so I’ve really enjoyed the company of women friends and other outdoor groups to adventure with,â€? she said. “This event is designed to make women feel welcome and supported as

they try new experiences, and also for outdoors people to relate to adventure in different ways. “I think getting active is universally positive, no matter what the adventure.â€? In addition to highlighting accessible adventure options, Ms Gilson said she also wanted the weekend to contribute something to the well-being of marginalised women. She said through special events and online donations, funds raised will be donated to Yoga For Freedom, a week-long global fundraising movement which runs from September 2 to 9 and aims to protect women and girls and help end the vicious cycle of sex slavery. Women are particularly encouraged to register for the 15 Mile Creek Wellbeing and Adventure Immersion on Sunday, September 9 from 9.30am until 4.30pm, and the series of events at Lake William Hovell in the King Valley which start at 10.30am. Big events taking place at resorts Mt Buller are currently reporting the best August snow cover in 14 years, and this week are hosting the Nationals Snow event on August 28September 1, seeing events contested in both men’s and women’s competitions across four sports; alpine skiing, freestyle skiing, snowboard and cross country skiing. At Mt Buffalo, conditions are great for tobogganing, cross country skiing, snow shoeing or simple snow play. Whatever mountain you’re visiting, keep an eye on snow cams and ski reports, or ask at your local ski hire business or tourism information centre to find out current snow levels, snow chain fitting advice, and weather at resorts around the area.

The role of naturopathy in your health care NATUROPATHY and herbal medicine are like the ‘general practice’ of natural medicine. People can come to see us about absolutely anything, that’s one of my favourite things about my work. Most commonly though it’s because they are tired, worried, not sleeping well, experiencing some hormonal changes or want some support for the health of their kids. All of these things impact negatively on a person’s energy, so it’s probably not surprising that the bulk of my patients are just tired and somewhat anxious. Ultimately, naturopaths are aiming to improve the energy and healing response of the body using herbal and nutritional prescriptions, whilst imple-

menting simple diet and lifestyle adjustments. Naturopathy works really well for woman and family health, and for me, it is all about supporting a person through whatever is leading to deficient energy levels (illness, worry, fear, insomnia etc.). It might be supporting new mothers who are struggling to breastfed or struggling with a colicky baby, or using herbal medicine to manage mastitis and post partum anxiety. It might be meeting a couple before they conceive and working step by step through their anxiety, nutritional deficiency and underlying hormonal imbalance. Often it is about helping to resolve an infection, using herbs to treat and

recover from heavy periods and hormonal imbalance, integrating a better dietary strategy into family life, listening when there is loss, fear or stress. There are so many things that can take our energy away and finding ways to get it back are so very rewarding for me and, I believe a huge part of naturopathic practice. Kids infections respond really well to herbal medicine. I am rediscovering this as my household becomes plagued with all the childhood “itis’s” - conjunctivitis, otitis, vulvinitis, sore tummies. Using herbal medicine with my own kids has made me realize the importance of super simple treatment plans. It just works so well.

CASUAL RELIEF TEACHERS

Brown Brothers Prosecco Spritz

Borinya WCP is a Catholic school in the Diocese of Sandhurst. Located in Wangaratta, Borinya offers young people from 12 to 17 the opportunity to be members of a supportive learning community. Borinya is a transitional school, where these young people are supported to re-engage with learning and the community.

WHILE there is a wine for every occasion, there are times when you need something else to lift your spirits and put you in the right frame of mind. As much as I try to keep the “cocktail cabinet stocked (a shelf in the pantry and not the kind of teak buffet you might see on Mad Men) it is inevitably missing one vital ingredient. Instead there’s a collection of half empty bottles of dubious quality, including dregs of bourbon, duty free tequila from decades past and absinthe that’s a hangover waiting to happen. On the other hand, the gin seems to mysteriously disappear within days of purchase. So I’m delighted by the idea of being able to cut out the middle man and pour a stunning looking cocktail straight from the bottle. Brown Brother’s Prosecco Spritz brings together the variety-of-the-times Prosecco, with a dash of orange and aromatic bitters. It has a brilliant colour – a bright orange amber which looks beautiful poured over a few cubes of ice in a giant, crystal clear wine glass with a slice of orange. The aroma is a little fruity but it’s also distinctly herby, with cassia-like spice. There’s an easy drinking, light sweetness which comes through from the appealing Prosecco base. *U T HSFBU GPS FOKPZJOH PWFS MVODI CVU JT ideal as a pre-dinner welcome drink with universal appeal. Avocado and smashed cucumber salad, mirin and sesame THIS recipe, which serves four, was created by Bill Granger for Australian Avocados. Bill is credited with popularising avocado toast since ďŹ rst putting it on the menu of his Sydney cafĂŠ in 1993, and this year marks the 25th anniversary of that milestone. This recipe is Granger’s go-to ‘bring-a-plate’ at barbeques and he also serves it up with poached or grilled chicken, ďŹ sh, seafood or rice for dinner. More avocado recipes can be found at australianavocados.com.au. Method – Salad Whilst keeping the cucumber in its wrapping, bash it heavily on all sides with a rolling pin. Remove from the plastic and cut roughly into one inch pieces. Tip the cucumber into a large mixing bowl. Halve the avocado and spoon the middle out into the bowl in rough pieces. Add the edamame beans and dress well with the dressing, adding more if needed. Spoon into a large bowl or four smaller individual bowls.

TECH & SCIENCE

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ ROLLIN’ ROLLIN’: The Ljubljana Marshes Wheel is the earliest and largest axle-fitted wheel to date. The aperture is square, which means that the axle spun with the wheel.

The wheel - the greatest invention since...um... IT’s fair to say that one of mankind’s greatest inventions - that of the humble wheel has been taken for granted. If the average person was asked, it’s a likely bet that they couldn’t begin to explain the origin of the wheel, yet every entrepreneur and their dog is quick to claim that they have created the best invention since this miraculous method of motion. To these trumped up merchants I give a derisive guffaw, and to you, dear reader, I would elucidate some enlightening facts surrounding this feat of engineering. Straight from the cogwheels of the human mind

Most early inventions of humanity could trace their origins to natural phenomenon. The manipulation of fire is traced back to early humans observing lightning strikes, the axe came from natural sharp stones, medicine from consuming natural grown flora, and pitchforks from forked sticks. Even the much later invention of the aeroplane came from observing birds in flight. The wheel, however, is truly set apart from these other inventions, as there are simply no wheels observable in nature - with the loose exception of rounded rocks and logs. Thus, the wheel is consid-

ered a divergence in human invention - from improving upon what nature already provided in a rudimentary form, to actively changing the natural world to better accommodate us. The wheel was late to the party Contrary to popular depictions, the wheel was a relatively late invention. The oldest known example of the wheel dates back to 3500 B.C. during the Bronze Age, and was discovered by archaeologists excavating a site in what was then Mesopotamia (West Asia). By this time, human beings were already planting crops,

herding domesticated animals, had some form of social hierarchy, and had already invented weaving, rope, and boats. One of the reasons why the wheel was invented only at this point in history is due to the fact that metal tools were needed to chisel fine-fitted holes and axles. This leads to the next reason – the wheel was not just a cylinder rolling on its edge. It was a cylinder that was connected to a stable, stationary platform. This wheel-axle concept was a stroke of genius, but making it was a challenge. The ends of the axle, as

well as the holes in the centre of the wheels had to be nearly perfectly smooth and round. The first wheel was laid flat, not on it’s edge Given the sheer complexity of the wheel, axle, platform combination, it’s not really surprising that the first wheel was not used for transport at all, but as a rotating platform for pottery making. The first wheel-as-transport imagery was found in Poland, and the first axle fitted wheel, known as the Ljubljana Marshes Wheel, was dated at 3150 B.C. - several centuries after the potter’s wheel was dated. Someone actually managed to reinvent the wheel

I had to include this last fact for the pure amusement factor. John Keogh, a freelance patent lawyer in Australia, submitted a patent application for a “circular transportation facilitation device” in May 2001, shortly after a new patent system was introduced in Australia. He wanted to prove that the cheap, streamlined system, which allows inventors to draft a patent online without the help of a lawyer, was flawed. His “wheel” was issued a patent. Only an Aussie could perform a feat so simultaneously stupid and clever.

The Bachelor touches down for season six CHANNEL CHAT

THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS:

SHOW: The Bachelor CHANNEL: Ten TIME: 7.30pm Wednesdays and Thursdays

You Can’t Ask That (ABC, 9pm, Wednesdays) Groups of misunderstood or marginalised Australians answer many inappropriate, uncomfortable and often offensive questions some are too afraid to ask, turning the concept of “political correctness gone mad” on its head. Mystery Diners (SBS Food Network, 10.30pm, weeknights) Watch as members of a company place themselves in numerous positions in hospitality establishments including as new staff members and as customers to identify potentially troublesome employees to help businesses.

with Leah Anderson Byrne SEASON six of The Bachelor started off with a bang last Wednesday with former professional Rugby Union player Nick Cummins badgered by 25 beautiful women. The words “let’s go for a yarn” left the honey badger’s mouth numerous times throughout the night, which somehow worked and he whisked away each girl for a chat, watched closely by pos-

sible former flame Cass Wood. Cass recognised the 2018 bachelor as she waited in the car for her turn to ‘meet’ him. According to the small blonde, they went to the same gym, and had been on a couple dates before timing and careers cut it off. Whether this is an advantage or disadvantage is yet to be seen but, as expected, a lot of the women had a lot of opin-

◆ THE BATCH: Rugby Union player Nick Cummins will have to decide which of the 25 women vying for his affection will ‘cop a rose’.

ions about it. Season six has already introduce its two ‘villains’; an unimpressed Vanessa Sunshine and a very confident Bec. Vanessa hopped out of the limousine to state she was ‘not thrilled’ with the bachy’s looks,

and hopes he will be getting rid of his moustache. Bec, on the other hand, didn’t complain about Nick, but that could be because she had spotted Sophie, the girl supposedly dating Bec’s exboyfriend.

The Graham Norton Show (8.30pm, various Win) Adorably funny Graham Norton entertains a range of celebrity guests as they all sit on a couch and drink. Get ready for an abundance of dramatic confrontations, tears and the phrase “I’m here for the right reasons” in the episodes to come - I know I’m excited.

This year’s bachelor may not be the best looking one we’ve had, but he sure is Aussie, and he sure is funny, and that goes a long way in this game.
