FOR the last eight years Helen West has been the carer for her husband John as he experiences advancing dementia. Helen said that before the onset of John’s illness, the Bright couple, who originally met through relatives in Sydney in their youth, ran two thriving farms in Queensland. With cardiovascular dementia brought on by high blood pressure and cholesterol, and exacerbated by a car accident and mini stroke events, John now struggles to recognise the time of day or day of the week. His daily routine encompasses little more than watching television and a regular walk. But all the while, he is under the watchful eye of his wife of 45 years. Helen is one of 773,400 Victorians (13.6 per cent of the state’s population) who care for someone with a disability or long term health condition. And she gets through her daily struggles with the help of friends, support networks and her local community. She said that as well as the importance of family support, simply taking time out to communicate and talk with carers can alleviate feelings of isolation. “We just need for other people to realise that we are in a caring situation,” she said. “They just have to say hi, and ask how we personally are doing today. continued page |

Garden of creative expression
Controlling snails and slugs
Name:
Genevieve Milham
Town:
Stanley
What’s in your garden: MANY different “rooms” connected by curved pathways. An 18m long rose covered pergola folds into an elegant courtyard with a 4m diameter garden seat that is an ode to Antonio Gaudi (Park Guell Barcelona). The elevated north facing terrace is shaded by a long line of London plane trees and overlooks a bocci court. Beyond this the “round lawn” is defined by a high double hedge of cherry laurel. Breaks in the hedge reveal two more smaller rooms: one houses a giant chess board. A huge curved perennial garden (an ensemble of pink/red/black) releases to the red/white and grey of the heart shaped garden. This path winds down to the steps into the swim pond garden where a natural pool is sunk into a lake surrounded by water lilies, irises and reeds. There is more - a private garden for the guest house (Planetrees Lodge), an orchard and a large raised vegetable garden. The plantings include 350 plus exotic trees, 3000 bulbs and hundreds of special shrubs and perennials. “Planetrees” garden is open to the public for the first time this spring together with five other special gardens of Beechworth/ Stanley on the weekend of October 25-26.
DEDICATED: Genevieve Milham tends to her garden.
All proceeds will go to charity. Go to www.beechworthgardener. com or call at Beechworth Information Centre in Ford Street for a map and information about these gardens. What do you enjoy about gardening: The huge pleasure of creative expression and learning that comes with this partnership with nature. Imagining another project. Sharing the pleasure of the outcome with others. Having my calendar tied to the seasons. Favorite plant/spot in your garden: I have many favorite plants and places in my garden, depending on my mood, the time of day and the season. I am always learning something new from my garden.
Water saving/conservation tip: If you are growing non-natives or water needy plants, put in an irrigation system that waters at night. Mulch everything with mushroom mulch, straw/ leaf litter. Your tips to keep gardens in top shape: Don’t let weeds go to seed. Take a walk twice a day and pull out the vigorous ones as you go. Be bold with your ideas - you can always move the plants (and even the trees) if they are not happy. If you are gardening in the low Alpine areas leave your cutting back of perennials until late September when the frosts are unlikely. Spread a liberal layer of mushroom mulch in early spring, mid summer and late autumn. The effect on growth is magic.
SNAILS and slugs are one of the most destructive pests in the garden. They love eating tender green leaves and shoots of plants and especially love newly planted seedlings, which they can completely demolish overnight. Snails and slugs are nocturnal creatures, resting during the day and feasting at night. They are most active after rain or after watering the garden, so put on some boots and stomp on them or collect them and drown them in a bucket of soapy water. Alternatively, feed them to chooks or ducks, who love them. Encourage natural predators like birds, beetles, lizards, frogs and turtles to the garden by installing a permanent water feature like a pond. Ducks are great predators who will actively seek out snails and slugs. Khaki Campbells or Indian Runners are the best carnivores preferring to eat the snails and slugs rather than the garden. Try placing a shallow saucer of beer in the garden at night to attract snails and slugs. They basically get drunk, fall in and drown. Empty and top up every few days. Other traps include grapefruit halves, flower pots, cardboard and anything dark and moist which can be used as a hiding place during the day. Check these often and remove and
WITH DEBBI GIBSON, HORTICULTURALIST
dispose of the nasty critters. Snails and slugs live and lay their eggs in warm, wet, dark places, so remove boards, bricks, and other damp debris on the ground. Water in the early morning rather than in the evening, as a dry garden at night time reduces damage significantly. Physical barriers can be placed around plants to prevent snails and slugs crossing. Crushed eggshells, sandpaper, wood ash, coffee grounds and sea weed form a rough surface which they don’t like to crawl over. While snail bait is an effective method of controlling snails and slugs, it contains chemicals which can be hazardous to children, pets and native wildlife. If using snail bait, choose one labelled pet friendly which contains a deterrent making it not so palatable. Use a few pellets at a time and hide under the foliage of garden plants. Happy gardening.

stomach tube is passed and the stomach flushed and charcoal instilled to bind to any remaining toxin stopping its absorption. In Baysol (usually blue pellets) poisonings a drug called atropine acts as a partial antidote to the poisoning, but the more common metaldehyde (usually green) pellets have no antidote. As always prevention is better than cure. Fencing off any area where pellets are used is a must, as is stopping your pets wandering onto other properties where snail pellets may be used. Other methods of snail prevention can be employed like water or beer traps. There are some “pet safe” branded snail pellets available which are safer, but can still cause toxicity of a different type when ingested in sufficient quantities. “But the issues are very individual for anybody.” Helen said carers themselves should not hesitate to seek help when they are struggling, whether they need counselling or just to share their feelings with a fellow carer. “It’s not a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of strength,” she said. “I personally am very open about it.” Keeping her own body and mind healthy and active are crucial, and Helen enjoys regular sessions at the gym, keeping up her involvement with U3A as well as managing its local website, and keeping in contact with friends and support networks. “Exercise is one of the best things for keeping the brain active,” she said. “The biggest challenge for me personally is that John is aphasic and doesn’t speak very well, so conversationally, there is virtually nothing and I can’t bounce around ideas at home,” she said, noting that speaking to other people regularly is a godsend. One of the groups Helen is involved in is the Wangaratta Dementia Support

Snail pellet toxicity is an easily fatal condition, but when treated promptly most animals can be saved. The pellets activate the nerves in the body leading to muscle tremors that can deteriorate to seizures and convulsions. Dogs often urinate, defecate and drool excessively. The pupils are usually very small (pinpoint). Death can occur rapidly from uncontrolled seizure activity. Treatment is aimed at controlling the seizures or tremors and detoxifying the bait that is still in the stomach/intestines. If a small amount has been ingested vomiting can be triggered to get rid of any surplus in the stomach, but if the dog is convulsing vomiting will only lead to aspiration pneumonia as stomach contents fall into the windpipe. In a less severely affected animal valium may provide enough muscle relaxation to control the symptoms, but in worse cases general anaesthesia is often used. This general anaesthesia may have to be maintained for several days before the body has detoxified the poison. In the anaesthetised patient a

WITH the beginning of spring, many people take the opportunity to get out in the garden and plant new flowers and vegetables. Unfortunately, snails and slugs enjoy the warmer weather too and there has been the eternal battle between these pests and the avid gardener. Unfortunately, the chemical snail and slug pellets that have been developed to kill the pests are indiscriminate in their action and will harm a dog or cat just as much as a slug or snail. Sadly, we see poisonings of dogs and cats with snail and slug baits quite regularly, particularly in the springtime. The pellets are made to be attractive to the pests and often this also makes them attractive to our pets. In a best case scenario we see a dog or cat eat a few pellets from the garden and we can quickly make them vomit them out, but in a worst case scenario a dog chews into a stored box of pellets and eats a large quantity. It only takes a small amount of bait to cause symptoms in small dogs and cats, and the more an animal eats, the longer the symptoms develop.

BY ROB ALEXANDER, WANGARATTA YELLA GOLD: James Dainton with a lovely fat yellowbelly caught in Lake Eildon last week on a Balista Trigger lure in pink glimmer color. James also reported catching a couple of nice trout on that same lure.
Hume yella, redfin on the bite LAKE Hume continues to fire this week, and should only get better over the next few weeks. With a full week of temperatures forecast to be in the high 20s this week the fishing should go off its nut, not just in Lake Hume, but pretty much everywhere. Anglers targeting yellowbelly in Lake Hume are catching them with the best spots being around rocky outcrops and points. Casting lipless crankbait lures such as the Jackall TN60 around the rocks and bouncing them off the bottom has been one of the most successful techniques. In saying that, anglers trolling diving lures around the timbered areas have been picking up some lovely yellowbelly also.
Redfin have been a welcomed by-catch for many anglers targeting yellowbelly, and anglers that have been targeting redfin have been picking up a few as well, using similar techniques. Bait such as small yabbies and worms have accounted for some nice catches of redfin and yellowbelly this week as well. The odd trout to 60cm is still being caught in Lake Hume as well, mainly by anglers targeting yellowbelly and redfin. Some anglers are targeting redfin and yellowbelly during the day, and then switching to winged lures such as Tassie Devils at sunset and spending the last hour of the day targeting trout by flatline trolling in the open water.
I have heard a few reports of large yellowbelly being caught in Lake Eildon as well using similar techniques. Lake Nillahcootie has seen a few small yellowbelly caught on small yabbies and worms as well as plenty of the dreaded carp. In the streams the trout have been going off tap.....if you can find them. As I have mentioned recently, the trout are there in the streams but they are very patchy. If you find a good patch, they are definitely on the bite at the moment with bladed spinners and small soft plastics being the best lures. With the increase in grasshopper activity over the last week or two the dry fly fishing should start to pick up soon.

THE KITCHEN PHILOSOPHER
Two babies and a wedding
MOVIE
This Is Where I Leave You (M) WHEN their father passes away, four grown siblings, bruised and banged up by their respective adult lives, are forced to return to their childhood home and live under the same roof together for a week, along with their over-sharing mother and an assortment of spouses, exes and might-havebeens.
WELL, it looks like 2015 is set to be a big year for my extended family with two new babies and a wedding on the horizon. In our typical family fashion, we go from nothing to everything happening in one fell swoop. My sister, who is yet to have any grandchildren, will get two in less than two weeks (all being well) and my number two son will finally marry his long term partner. We (the mothers and aunties) have been waiting patiently for all of these events. Not that we haven’t proffered more than a few hints – and the occasional bit of downright harassment – over the past couple of years. The first news was about the babies. We’re not sure whether there was collusion between the two mums-to-be to synchronise the dates but, in any case, it will be nice for the two babies to have a cousin the same age. I’m sure, if their parents and their own cousins were anything to go by, there’ll be much mischief ahead for those two. And the mums and dads will also have a built in data-comparison-source for examining all the minutiae of early parenting; from who’s had the least amount of sleep, to how much projectile poo one baby can emit – and everything in between. I must say, in retrospect, it was very convenient having my own siblings with children roughly the same age. We sought each other for advice, support, hand-me-down clothes and holiday destinations (conveniently one sister lived interstate and near the beach!\). When we all got together it was good times for sure. And, of course, the other big news is the wedding. This will be a first for ‘the grandchildren’ of our family. I guess it’s a sign of the times that there will be three children (including our grandson) but still not a wedding ring in sight – until later in the year, anyway, when number two walks down the aisle.

The Silver Moon: Reflections on Life, Death and Writing by Bryce Courtenay IN these short stories and insights, many written in his final months, Bryce Courtenay reflects on living and dying, and how through determination, respect for others and taking pleasure in small moments of joy, he tried to make the most out of life. He finally popped the question while they were holidaying overseas. After keeping his girl guessing for almost three weeks while travelling through the Baltic states of Europe, he settled on Bath in England as the place it would happen. While I’m very glad he finally got to it I do, rather selfishly, wish he hadn’t chosen Bath because, when I told my friends about the proposal, they all wanted to know where it happened. I wanted to say Paris or Prague or Vienna. But no, I had to say “Bath” to which they – inevitably and without exception – exclaimed “What? In the bath?” and then I had to explain that I meant Bath, England not the bath. Quite inconsiderate of number two who clearly didn’t think about the predicament he was about to place his mother in. Tut tut. Well, anyhoo, suffice to say we’re very chuffed about this turn of events as she is a wonderful girl who shares many of my interests and opinions. Which, of course, makes her doubly wonderful. We were getting a little tetchy as it’s been nine years and we felt it was ‘time’ they got on with it. Of course, my saying that at least once or twice, may well have been a factor in the delay – number two being of somewhat stubborn character (no idea where he gets that from). And so it’s now on with the wedding planning which kicked off last weekend when they visited us and decided to go with a local venue for their big day. We’re very happy about this as it doesn’t get much more local than the building right next door to our house. I can see us all staggering happily home at the end of the evening and it also means no expensive wedding cars as the bride insists she will just hop the fence and foot it into the service. And so bring on 2015. Two gorgeous little babies to add to our family and a beautiful girl to welcome as Mrs number two. I’m sure she’s just gonna love that title.

WINE TALK
IN MY KITCHEN
Auldstone Cellars
2014 Riesling Around $19 WHENEVER you watch one of those shows where amateur cooks battle it out to see whose cuisine reigns supreme, they always talk about letting the ingredients speak for themselves. That’s all well and good, but so far no one has ever won Masterchef by shucking some oysters and serving them up with a wedge of lemon. Instead it’s all about cold smoking, tempering, 63 degree eggs and dry ice, and making a plate look more like a sculpture than something you want to tuck into. I might have a chance of winning if I could just create my own “signature dinner party combo, which involves the best oysters you can find and more wine than you can poke a stick at. Having nursed a sack full of the glorious things all the way back from Coffin Bay, I wasn’t about to do any more with them but open them and scoff them while they were still breathing.
WITH ANITA McPHERSON A wave of lemon over the top is okay, but a glass of Riesling by the side is even better. Auldstone Cellars 2014 Riesling has quite a heady perfume with some fresh citrus and a garland of spring blossoms. It has a mouth filling and juicy texture, with flavors of apple and apricot, some lime acidity and a light touch of honey which lingers into the next glass. The warmth complements instead of competes with the fleshy oysters, making it a deliciously creamy combo. One taste and I wouldn’t just win - they’d have to give me my own show. Available from local stockists or visit www.auldstone.com.au.

Caramelised spiced walnuts
THIS DAY IN HISTORY ONE of the worst late frosts ever seen in the North East occurred on the morning of October 22, 1929. Brown’s vineyard in Milawa was particularly hard hit, with all the new shoots burnt from the vines. Swan Bros’ big orchard, St Leonards, was decimated by the frost, while vineyards around Barnawartha, Gooramadda, and Rutherglen were all badly hit. The orchards along the foothills of the Warby Range were spared the severe damage of other districts.
Combine the icing sugar, salt and cayenne pepper. Toss the dry nuts through this mixture. Heat the vegetable oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat and shallow-fry the nuts gently in two batches until golden and crisp turning them over with a slotted spoon as they fry. Do not walk away from the stove as the nuts will burn quickly. The nuts can be stored in an airtight container for up to one week.

THIS is the time of year that I start to think about the food for Christmas, all the things that need to be made early. If you are going to have the family over, or guests pop in then this is great to have on hand. People always love some homemade goodies. They are also a great pressie for the kids to give to their teacher when school finishes as a thank you present. Just pop some in a cellophane bag and tie it up with some pretty ribbon. Method Pre heat the oven to 110 degrees. In a saucepan cover the walnuts with water, bring to a simmer and cook over a medium heat for five minutes until the nuts begin to soften. Drain, transfer to a baking tray and bake for 5 minutes so they caramelise evenly.

Strong earnings and employment for postgraduates
A
ccording to Graduate Careers Australia’s (GCA) newly released Postgraduate Destinations 2013 report, 92.4 per cent of new postgraduates were in some form of employment shortly after completing their degrees. The report is based on GCA’s 2013 Australian Graduate Survey (AGS). Almost one in 10 (9.7 per cent) were working on a part-time basis while continuing to seek full-time employment with 82.7 per cent in full-time employment, adding to the total of 92.4 per cent. A further 7.5 per cent of recent postgraduates were without work and seeking a full-time position at the time of the AGS. This figure is up slightly from 6.3 per cent in 2012 and 6.6 per cent in 2011 but notably higher than 3.6 per cent in 2006. Postgraduate studies continue to play an important role in the education and training of Australians. Between 1999 and 2012, the number of people completing postgraduate awards increased by 124 per cent. In 2012, more than a third of completing domestic higher education students had studied at a postgraduate level. GCA Executive Director, Dr Noel Edge, said “Postgraduate study meets a variety of student needs, from updating old skills and re-skilling to adding vocational qualifications to a generalist degree in order to stand out from the increasing number of bachelor degree graduates in the Australian workforce. The median reported salary for all
postgraduates was $79,000 ($85,000 for males and $72,000 for females). Differences in salaries for males and females at this high level of aggregation are generally a result of factors such as differing field of education enrolment patterns, and differing types of employer and occupation. In the wider Australian workforce, Australian Bureau of Statistics data gathered at around the same time as the AGS was conducted suggest that postgraduates had an unemployment rate of between 2.6 and 3.5 per cent, compared to 7.8 per cent for those with no postsecondary qualifications and 5.7 per cent for the entire workforce. Why go gluten free?
And how are your shares looking?
GLUTEN is a protein found in some grains such as wheat, rye, barley and oats. People who are diagnosed with Celiac disease (gluten allergy) must avoid gluten in their diet to avoid damage to their gut lining. Consuming gluten in this case results in immediate immune reactions that affects the body and reduces vitamin and mineral absorption. Even the smallest amount of gluten can lead to osteoporosis, fertility issues, seizures, iron deficiency and mood changes. The only way to diagnose celiac disease is a blood test followed by a biopsy of the small intestine. Gluten sensitivity is very common and very different to celiac disease. Both of these should be diagnosed by your health care professional not just assumed that gluten containing grains are the culprit for your symptoms. Gluten sensitivity can be detected via intolerance screening. Intolerance symptoms are delayed and often hard to identify as the client is often left critiquing and stressing over what they ate when and in what combination. We often see our clients

believing they are doing the “right thing” and remove wheat/gluten from their diet. However, these gluten containing foods are often replaced with food containing higher amounts of sugar and refined carbohydrates through the multimillion dollar industry of gluten free snack foods. When something is removed from foods manufacturers replace it with something else, normally equally or more detrimental to our health. This leads us back to the philosophy of consuming meat, veg, fruit and whole grains. In both celiacs and gluten intolerance gut
repair work is vital in repairing damaging and reducing the severity of the immune response and replenishing lost vital vitamins and nutrients. Naturopaths safely and efficiently identify intolerances, remove them, give you alternatives to the food and repair the gut. The majority of our clients report a vast improvement in energy, sleep, reduced body aches and pains, improved moods, less opportunistic infections such as candida, tinea etc. So take the guess work out of your digestive symptoms and seek help from your health care professional today.
I’M glad I do not depend too much on dividend and investment income, as I think over the past couple of weeks the movement on the stock exchange would be driving you up the wall. Assistant governor of the Reserve Bank, Guy Debelle, is reported as saying that the Reserve Bank is concerned there could be a “relatively violent” selloff in financial markets, as investors are unprepared for this after such an unnaturally long period of stability. In an address to a Citibank Investment conference last week he said “Financial markets have been quiet, maybe too quiet, for much of the year”. He was speaking after a month in which the Australian share market lost a whopping eight per cent, before a bit of a recovery late last week. We have been hearing for some time now the Chinese economy may not be as strong as was predicted and with tensions increasing in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, these will all have a bearing on financial markets. Mr DeBelle said “Volatility has been low for a long period of time in the face of a number of events which individually would normally be associated with high volatility, let alone all of them happening at the same time”. He said increased forward guidance from central banks was responsible for the stability, saying that while banks like his own were being more talkative there was no reason for investors to believe them. Look at the history and you will see “plenty of examples” where central banks have got it wrong. So are the investors too late, or should they be joining the market’s spring sell-down which could see them make a great mistake? There could be some risks in staying put
By KEN CLARKE, WANGARATTA CERTIFIED PRACTICING ACCOUNTANT
kenclarke11@bigpond.com as structural changes in the market since the 2008-2009 global financial crisis could turn a routine correction into something more violent. Just looking at iron ore prices, they have slumped more than 40 per cent since the start of the year and it is anticipated they will not climb back above $US100 a tonne in 2015, although they are looking to be higher than they are at present – a far cry from the $US140 a tonne being paid in December 2013. Marubeni minerals and metals executive officer, Shinji Kawai, said last week that iron ore prices were poised to rise in 2015, believing “today’s market is almost bottom”. I suppose we will have to wait and see where BHP and Rio Tinto think the iron ore sales are going to go. Balance sheet downsizing has been a crucial part of repairing economies post the global financial crisis and banks have been warning that lower balance sheets creates problems of its own and the Murray inquiry said there could be problems if enough investors look to sell at the same time. It could be there will simply not be enough market-maker liquidity to handle the rush. So, I think we may see a lot of uncertainty in our markets over the next few weeks. If you are thinking of changing your share portfolio then get to your stockbroker sooner rather than later and get his advice. And remember their advice is still only advice, the decision is yours.
